Didn't expect to love but I'm obsessed
I just finished watching the Chinese drama Legend of Zang Hai and honestly, I didn’t expect to like it this much. I started it right after binge-watching The Untamed, and since Xiao Zhan is in this one too, I thought, why not give it a try? Turned out to be a great decision.Of course, I watched it mainly for Xiao Zhan, but his acting really blew me away. I didn’t expect to love the character of Zang Hai this much. He’s smart, strategic, and has such a calm yet powerful presence. I was genuinely impressed with how well Xiao Zhan brought Zang Hai to life.
Zhang Jing Yi also stars as Antu, Zang Hai’s partner. At first, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about her in this role because I absolutely adored her in Lighter and Princess, and now I can’t help but call him “princess” every time she appears on screen. Funny enough, she still kind of plays a “princess” here too, but in a cool way, she runs an entertainment venue and is super skilled in martial arts. Unexpectedly badass.
What I love most about this drama is the storyline. It’s centered on revenge, which is a pretty common theme, but the way they executed it made it feel fresh. The early episodes where Zang Hai was buried alive were so intense and well-done, especially the part where he managed to escape. That scene had me holding my breath.
Zang Hai isn’t good at martial arts, but he wins with his brain. He always has a clever plan, always one step ahead of his enemies. It made every episode feel like a chess game, and I was always curious what move he’d make next.
One of the most emotional parts for me was Zang Hai’s relationship with Zhuang Luyin. Zhuang Luyin was supposed to be his enemy, but Zang Hai managed to gain his full trust, almost like a father and son bond. So when Zhuang Luyin died, it really hit hard. It was sad knowing we wouldn’t get more of their scenes together.
There were a few things I felt a bit iffy about though. In the beginning, I liked the subtle romance vibe between Zang Hai and Antu, but later on, it started to feel a bit... complicated. Also, Zang Hai’s mentor, Gao Ming, I loved him so much. I was really hoping he’d be there till the end. Their conversations were always deep and touching, and it broke my heart when he died. I’m still not over it.
Thanks to this drama, I’m now even more obsessed with Xiao Zhan and definitely planning to check out more of his works. Legend of Zang Hai is seriously one of the best, even though I’m still low-key grieving over Shifu Gao Ming.

Legend of Zang Hai
I have watched the drama up to episode 32, and the storyline remains compelling. Zang Hai's unwavering commitment, driven by vengeance, has moulded him into a cold and emotionally detached individual, resisting any unwelcome advances from either gender. However, despite his resolve, he has deviated from his original path and become entangled with Antu. He unquestioningly believes Antu's mother's story, which undermines this part of the narrative. Was this review helpful to you?
Overly Complicated Plot & Unconvincing Romance...
In other dramas the ML Xiao Zhan is usually the prettiest person in the show but he looked terrible throughout the series. The styling of this period didn't suit him. His hair was more bouffant than the other characters, his face looked flat and too wide (poor make-up, lighting and camera angles), and his costumes didn't do him any favours. All of this distracted from the story-telling which was over complicated even with the few interesting twists.Although the FL tried hard to be engaging and winning, their romance was very unconvincing. Xiao Zhan and Zhang Jing Yi had zero chemistry as friends, let along, as lovers. The actors and story might've fared better if the lead characters had remained as friends.
I won't be rewatching.

Frenemies and enemies
The phenomenal cast, production staff and OST brought to life a drama filled with political intrigue, corruption and the young man seeking revenge for his family. These all intertwine in a marvelous pattern of alliances and rippling effects that keeps the viewer on edge of seat with anticipation to see who really did what and when. Hints are given throughout, but there are many unexpected friendships and power grabs as revenge is sought by many sources. The lengths some will go to achieve their goals are shocking and unexpected. The amount of punishment some are willing to take to defy death to keep them from their objectives makes us shake our heads and sigh in relief when they actually survive. The fact that a happy ending might result from all this chaos keeps you wondering to last episode can they really accomplish it? It is well worth the watch and certain to leave an impression. For those that appreciate revenge and plots with a hint of romance…this is a must watch. Was this review helpful to you?

10 years training or 10 hours training?
I think that when you set up a ten-year training arc for the ML with the sole purpose of revenge, it’s understandable that viewers would expect the ML to be intelligent, patient, and that his schemes would be well thought out.But that’s not what we see in this c-drama. Up until episode 20, the ML constantly finds himself in situations where he only survives by sheer luck, or he makes up some elaborate lie on the spot and, somehow, the seasoned schemers around him actually believe it. He relies on several people, including the FL, to get out of trouble—completely contradicting his supposed personal vendetta.
As for the romance, I still can’t imagine why the FL fell in love with him. In my opinion, he’s pathetic from start to finish, and she, as the master of Zhen Tower, must have met far more impressive men than this pedantic ML, who acts purely on impulse and ruins the lives of countless people around him simply because he’s incapable of being patient and waiting for opportunities where others wouldn’t get hurt.
When he stole the Gui Seal from the emperor—that was another unbelievable moment, hahahah. Your father died for this, and you just destroyed all his efforts?
This rating on MDL is so unfair. Coroner’s Diary is a masterpiece and only has an 8.7, while this awful series sits at 8.6. How did that even happen?

Lasting, reverberating, intriguing, scheming
This drama is one you won't easily forget. It follows the life story of Zhinu( Zang Hai) who lost his family tragically. Because of this, his aim to take revenge on those who made him suffer the loss of his family goes beyond everything you can imagine. His cleverness, and self dedication, his scheming spider webs of exposing his opponents get to the viewer.
The story has everything, tension, excitement, intrigue, tragic events, scheming, excitement, friendship, loyalty, love.
As of now it is one of my favorite dramas.

Great until the halfway point
Pros:1) Zang hai and his elaborate revenge planning abilities
2) loved the complexity of the marquis (officially one of my favourite antagonists of all time I swear he and that entire house is so well written and executed)
3) Gauo Mein. Just him and his entire arc
4) the whole toumbs and elaborate mechanisms of the sets
5) the only genuine plot twist I felt was the astronomer being one of caos men
6) the acting of the whole cast was wonderful
Cons:
1) compared to the marquis the other two felt very one dimensional and had had cartoon villain vibes.
2) left with more questions than answers like: why skin kai do and his wife? And why the prince who I forgot the name of existing we saw like three episodes of him and he randomly helps out in the end? Then some random takes the throne? How are hundreds of people dying on the street with the whole kill caos foster son arc and not a single minister noticing? What happened to antus elaborate network after she lost the zhen tower? Like the people still listen to you?
4) the second the masked dude mentioned the three people that were zang hais enemies and only name dropped two I could tell he was the third. Cause if you know the two are connected then you can fish out the third because obviously they have shared history. If you truly wanted to help your student then you'd pull through.
5) the princess becoming a background character in the second arc
6) zang hais his buddy deserves more screen time
7) the emperor is dumb as hell... Like seriously what did you think was gonna happen bro?
8) my biggest complaint is it just got so disoriented towards the end

Intriguing All the Way to the End!
Legend of Zang Hai is one of those dramas that keeps you engaged with confident storytelling, good pacing and nice visuals. I didn’t emotionally bond with the characters in quite the same way as I have with some other C-dramas, but that didn’t take away from how much I thoroughly enjoyed this series. And let’s be honest - sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and appreciate the craft. At first glance, the premise appears to follow a typical revenge arc. But it quickly reveals itself to be something far more layered: a narrative about political manoeuvring, strategy, and the complex web of interpersonal relationships that underpin Zang Hai’s world.
The writing is tight. Every character action, motivation, and consequence is anchored in a solid backstory and emotional logic. That should be a given in any script but we know it’s not always the case in C-dramaland! I feel the writers treated the material, and the characters, with the respect these deserve.
Plot-wise, the twists are clever and the reveals well-timed, keeping viewers engaged to the end. There is a nice resolution in the end.
The casting is solid. Xiao Zhan is compelling in the lead role. This is my first time seeing his work, and I found his portrayal of Zang Hai to be measured, layered, and full of subtle angst. A complex role, well executed. I did feel a subtle lack of chemistry between the ML and FL. However, given that romance is not a central pillar of the plot, it’s not a deal breaker for me.
What moved me was the relationship between Zang Hai and Master Gao Ming. It is heart-warming, well-explored and for the most part, sincere. A gentle light in the otherwise cold and difficult world of Zang Hai.
In short: this is a series worth your time. If you're after something engaging, visually polished, and grounded in good writing, Legend of Zang Hai delivers. Hope you enjoyed it too. :)

In the end, it was an interesting drama, but one I will not carry with me among the best.
At last, I have finished it.I must admit that I delayed a little during the final episodes, yet I do not regret choosing this drama.
Indeed, it is a difficult choice to make. Chinese productions are so numerous and diverse that it is truly impossible to give proper attention to, or fully appreciate, the majority of them.
Perhaps it would be a bit easier if I were to focus on a specific genre—but that is not the case. I enjoy them all, except for comedy. Therefore, if the plot is good, that is enough for me. In fact, I am currently watching an excellent crime drama, *The Perfect Suspect* (2025, Chinese), though unfortunately it seems to be rather underappreciated.
Now, let us talk about *Legend of Zang Hai*.
At first, the drama struck me as intense, vibrant, and full of great expectations—be it for the cast, the script, the direction, or the grand scale of production.
There were memorable moments, filled with suspense and mystery. The construction of the plot, paired with strong villains portrayed with outstanding performances, was truly remarkable.
The decision to focus on vengeance and keep the romance minimal seemed to me quite tasteful. Although I appreciated Xiao Zhan's performance, I could not bring myself to feel truly captivated by his character, Zang Hai. His younger version was brilliant, but the adult man, though attractive, lacked charm.
Zhang Jing Yi, as Princess An Tu, delivered a solid performance, yet her character promised much and contributed little—both as an individual and as a romantic partner.
It might have been better had the character been male, or not existed at all. She was, in truth, irrelevant.
On the other hand, when well executed, a revenge arc is very compelling. However, once numerous innocent lives begin to be taken without reason, the thrill becomes bitter, or loses most of its appeal.
The mysterious object of desire, the Gui Seal, proved ineffective, unremarkable, and far below the expectations it set at the beginning. Truly a disappointment—poorly explored, left unresolved, it appeared and vanished without offering any substantial contribution to the plot.
In the end, it was an interesting drama, but one I will not carry with me among the best.
My apologies to the fans.

AN ABSOLUTE CINEMA LIKE NO OTHER.
Let me keep it short and sweet.Legend of Zang Hai is an absolute GEM. I haven't watched such a show in a while. The story was so good and new. It had me hooked at every point. Each episode ended with something or the other and I could not stop myself from watching it furthur.
LEGEND OF ZANG HAI HAS A VERY UNIQUE STORY THAN ALL THE OTHER DRAMAS.
YOU MUST MUST MUST GIVE IT A WATCH.
YOU WOULD NEVER EVER REGRET IT.
I PROMISE.
SHOUT OUT TO THE CAST. THEY ALL DID AN AMAZING JOB!

Good plot, but could have been less episodes
Overall, this was totally worth the watch.XZ delivers an amazing performance - probably one of his best - worth it just for his performance.
My only issue here is the usual, having an actor who is in their 30's play a character who is only 20yrs old - its pretty obvious he isn't 20 anymore (which is not a bad thing) - so those places where it falters are the places where he is supposed to come across as this youngin' and it just doesnt work - cause, its obvious he isn't anymore. But, you can let it slide, cause the rest of his character is great.
This story is VERY slowed paced - so be prepared, it DRAGS. Honestly, it could have been at least 10 episodes shorter.
The story is interesting and the thing that really keeps you watching is trying to figure out who the masked man is/3rd enemy.
The Marquis villain - mostly done well. I kept not being sure if he was truly bad or not. And the whole parents clothes/skin in the basement made no sense and wasn't really explained why he had them. it just felt kind of inconsistent with his character - so could have seen the eunach villain doing this.
The Eunuch villain - creepy as F*CK!
Minister Zhao - also creepy - but it's the dead eyes that just gave me the heebie-jeebies.
FL - really just a supporting character and mostly a plot ploy as a romantic interest for the ML. She wasn't bad - but it was an odd character. She is super-helpful at times and I did like that she was a smart, fierce woman - but they tempered it too much with her just being a brat (although this does go away after a bit, which I was happy with because I was starting to not like her at all).
Goa Ming - he was wonderful and this relationship was so sweet, which made the end so much sadder.
The boyhood friends - such a great addition. I loved the found family aspect of all of this.
I totally didn't why he didn't her make fake bronze fish?
Costuming was beautiful - simple, but spot on - I loved it.
Cinematography was pretty good as well.
Not sure who was in charge of wigs - but ZX's wig just bugged me the whole time - too clean around the edges and it was obvious it was a wig - minor annoyance, but still bugged - lol!
