.

This was fun but it started dragging towards the end after the Marquis died! Fast forwarded towards the end, the writing couldn’t have been better there!
Acting by the ML, Marquis and Shifu was amazing. The initial half was too gory and the ML relied heavily on luck instead of brains there. Towards the middle, it was really amazing with the ML actually using his brain for revenge. But the last 6-7 episodes introduced too many characters and plot twists, some of which were really contrived that it got hard to watch. Over all good, but could have been amazing with better writing. The FL had amazing fighting scenes but otherwise didn’t much care for her.

A Majestic and Gripping Journey

As an avid fan of intelligent, intricately woven revenge dramas like Nirvana in Fire and Joy of Life, I’m always on the lookout for something that can match their depth and storytelling brilliance. After Blossoms last year, I had been eagerly waiting for a drama that could fill that void. Being a long-time admirer of Xiao Zhan, this particular series had been on my radar from the moment the first teaser dropped. The posters, the tone, the ensemble cast—all pointed towards something promising. And now that I’ve watched it, I would say, It was a nice drama but had potential to be so much more.

THE GOOD

This drama completely pulled me in. It strikes a perfect balance between clever storytelling and emotional depth. What really stood out was the focus on the Imperial Astronomical Bureau—a refreshing and mysterious setting I’ve rarely seen explored in historical dramas. The revenge arc is so well done—full of twists, secrets, and suspense that keeps you guessing. I actually liked that the romance was understated; it felt real and added depth without taking over the plot.

Xiao Zhan as Zang Hai is the heart of the show. His journey is powerful, and his performance—especially in Episode 7—is just incredible. You don’t see the actor, you see the character living and breathing. Other characters like the Marquis of Pingjiyin and Cao were also memorable, each growing in unexpected ways. Even the antagonists are written smartly, which makes every confrontation feel intense and earned. The visuals are stunning—some scenes are just pure art—and the pacing never drags. Every episode has purpose

THE NOT SO GOOD PART

The cracks begin to show in the final six episodes. Up until then, the story had introduced us to a sharp, calculated protagonist who felt fully in control—but in the end, that consistency faltered. I was expecting a climax that would be grand, impactful, and emotionally resonant. Instead, what we got felt underwhelming and overly dragged out.

The pacing slowed, the editing lost its tightness, and the once-intelligent plotting gave way to convenient resolutions and reliance on external help or luck—something that didn’t align with Zang Hai’s character as established. It’s not a bad ending, just not the kind of finale that leaves you awestruck or satisfied. When you set the bar so high, the landing needs to match—and here, it didn’t quite stick.

### Final Thoughts

While the ending didn’t quite hit the high notes and dragged a little, the journey was still gripping and emotionally satisfying. Xiao Zhan truly carried the show—his performance as Zang Hai was powerful, nuanced, and one of the biggest highlights. It’s not a flawless drama, but if you’re into well-crafted revenge stories with heart and style, it’s definitely worth the watch.

A brilliant and outstanding masterpiece!!

Legend of Zang Hai is an outstanding, well crafted, well written, and perfectly executed dramaa, imho.
It revolves around Zhi Nu, who sets off on a revenge path to avenge the massacre of his family, and unearths many secrets related to the Gui seal.
Xiao Zhan as Zhi Nu/Zang Hai is excellent and outstanding in his performance. The way he portrays emotions with his eyes, switches moods and carries himself as Zang Hai, who has only revenge as his goal, is exceptional!! I can never again imagine anyone as Zang Hai.
Zhang Jingyi, Zhou Qi, Huang Jue and all others were fantastic in their performances.
The plot, pacing, screenplay, twists and turns, suspense, everything is well written and well presented too.
Though there are some flaws, I really loved this drama.!!A must watch and highly recommended this drama!!!

Great, Until

Really compelling and well done. Great acting, engaging and fun. Xaio Zhan is so good. acting a dry role like that can't be easy and he killed it. It landed a bit flat in the end, but still def worth the watch. Seems to have lost the plot in the last couple episodes. They felt tacked on, it may have been lost in the edit...

Revenge Served Cod (With a Side of Chaos)

If you like your dramas intense, your protagonists brooding, and your palace politics bloodier than a Game of Thrones family reunion, then Legend of Zanghai might just be your next obsession. This isn't your average historical drama—it's a strategic revenge thriller with enough plot twists to give a Rubik’s Cube a complex.

THE PREMISE: One Night. One Secret. One Very Angry Protagonist.

Our tortured hero, Zanghai, had a bad night ten years ago. You know the kind: your father gets murdered, your entire household wiped out, and the cryptic dying message involves a secret worth killing for. Instead of curling into a ball of trauma (relatable), Zanghai does what every self-respecting avenger does—he disappears, trains for a decade, and returns with smoldering eyes and a singular goal: REVENGE.

But this isn’t your garden-variety slash-and-burn revenge. Oh no. Zanghai infiltrates the imperial court with the grace of a chess grandmaster and the emotional turmoil of a K-drama second lead. Each enemy, a piece to be moved. Each move, a step closer to vengeance.

ACT ONE: Rough Edges and Risky Moves

Patience Is a Virtue—Zanghai’s Still Working on It

While the drama kicks off with enough tension to snap a sword, the first half sees Zanghai... struggling. Yes, he's intelligent, calculating, and trained for a decade, but he’s also, well, kind of rash. Many of his early victories come courtesy of the people around him—loyal friends, mentors, and the occasional mysterious benefactor. You get the sense that he’s brilliant, but not quite ready. Think Batman in year one of crime-fighting—minus the cape, but plus a lot of emotionally suppressed trauma.

Support Cast to the Rescue

Thank heavens for his backup crew, who regularly pull Zanghai out of self-dug pits of impulsive decisions. The pacing here is fast, perhaps too fast for his character arc to feel fully earned—but hey, when the emperor’s watching and heads are literally on the line, who has time for personal growth?

ACT TWO: The Mastermind Emerges

Now We’re Cooking with Poison

It’s in the final five episodes where Zanghai truly becomes the cold-blooded tactician we signed up for. Here, he isn’t leaning on others—he’s outsmarting his enemies with moves so subtle, Sun Tzu would pause and clap slowly. Watching him bring each of the three villains to their knees (strategically, not literally... although occasionally literally) is immensely satisfying.

Villains That Make You Boo Out Loud

Let’s give credit where it’s due: the villains? Excellent. Slimy, power-hungry, and impossible to ignore. Each has a distinct flavor of evil, making their downfall that much sweeter. You don’t just want Zanghai to win—you want him to annihilate them.

Mysterious Masked Men and Final Enemy

Who’s the Third Enemy? Who’s the Masked Benefactor? Who Knows!

The show knows how to hook you with its mystery subplot. Is the mysterious third enemy who we think it is? Is the masked benefactor really as benevolent as they seem? There’s something deliciously addictive about these question marks—like sprinkling chili flakes on an already spicy plot. It keeps you watching, guessing, and occasionally yelling at the screen.

Romance? Meh. Revenge? Chef’s Kiss.

Sparks? More Like Static.

There is a romance subplot, but let’s be real: it’s more placeholder than plot driver. The chemistry between Zanghai and the female lead barely simmers, let alone sizzles. Thankfully, the drama knows better than to shove love into a story that’s clearly about vengeance, not Valentine’s.

A Good Guy with a Knife (And a Moral Compass)

Zanghai isn’t written to be cruel or bloodthirsty. He’s not out to burn the world—just his enemies. That said, this inherent goodness makes his revenge slightly less delicious than it could have been. He’s strategic, yes, but not cunning in that edge-of-your-seat, "Oh no he DIDN’T" kind of way. You’re rooting for him, but you’re also occasionally wishing he’d lean a little further into the dark side.

FINAL VERDICT: A Sharp-Edged Revenge Tale with Emotional Teeth

Legend of Zanghai is a strong contender in the revenge drama genre. It may not be perfect—especially in pacing and emotional chemistry—but it delivers where it counts. Zanghai’s journey from haunted survivor to imperial puppet master is as satisfying as it is intense.

For those who love layered plots, moral ambiguity, and a healthy dose of palace intrigue, this drama deserves a spot on your watchlist. Just don’t expect roses and love confessions. Expect betrayal, blood, and brilliance.

The art of deception

I rarely write reviews, but the recent dramas I’ve watched have made my hands itch to write something (LOL).

Starting with the villains’ past experiences, the phrase “how will you live without hatred?” becomes the basis of the story, especially since they need power to get whatever they want. The story then unfolds, revealing that the ghost seal that is able to gather a large army becomes a tool for power struggles, massacres, and revenge. Here, we are introduced to the main character (ML) as a revenge seeker, utilizing his knowledge of astronomy, geometry, and more. His battle of wits and calmness when facing his enemies really amazed me; I wondered how he managed to control his hatred. This aspect is evident in the first half of the story and kept me interested. The second half of the show introduces a new phrase: “The most powerful trick is to deceive people by telling the truth. Mix one lie with nine truths.” This applies to the masked benefactor, who plays the mastermind behind ML’s misery.

The actors are great, and the CGI and directing are precise. So, if you like mind game revenge tropes, this drama is highly recommended for you. For me, it scores 8.5, because this show is really entertaining to pass the time.

When Vengeance Ends, What’s Left of the Man?

What I loved most about Legend of Zang Hai is that it wasn’t just another monotonous revenge plot.

This story gives us a human Zang Hai—not someone blindly driven by vengeance, but a man shaped by grief, burdened with purpose, and slowly learning to question everything he was told. As he forges genuine connections with others, he begins to hesitate... and that hesitation makes him real.

When he discovers that the very person guiding his revenge—the man he believed saved him—was, in truth, his greatest enemy all along, it’s not just betrayal. It’s a reckoning. The realization that his purpose, his mission, his very identity… was never his to begin with.

That kind of loss cuts deeper than anger. It shakes trust. It shakes self.

Favorite Scene:

The moment Zang Hai defeats Zhuang Lu Yin stays with me. He’s walking through falling snow, the world around him quiet and still. It’s beautiful, but heart-wrenching. He should feel victorious—he finally got justice—but instead, he feels hollow. That contrast made it unforgettable.

What I Loved:
- The happy ending :) I’ve had enough of bad or open endings.
- The cinematography—gorgeous. The battle scene synced with the drums and music? Absolute chef’s kiss.
- The background score heightens tension and emotion in every scene.
- The cast’s performance is phenomenal. Xiao Zhan (Zang Hai) and Huang Jue (Zhuang Lu Yin) were standouts—especially Xiao Zhan. Zang Hai’s internal struggle was portrayed through sheer expression, with barely any lines. Incredible.

Could It Be Better?
- The ending felt rushed. It probably needed more episodes—especially to flesh out the emperor’s death and Prince Yong Rong helping Zang Hai. Damn the 40-episode limit.
- The CGI in the later episodes set in Dongxia was rough. I’ve watched a lot of dramas, so fake-looking views really stand out to me.

Xiao Zhan's Mission Impossible

This costume drama has the feel of a Mission Impossible story. I love the suspense and tension that unfolds with each episode. The acting is superb along with the costuming (with the exception of one actor's over collagenated lips which were a distraction). Currently on episode 36 so I will update when I finish watching the series.

The best revenge drama of 2025

I was waiting for this since last year and needless to say, Xiao Zhan didn't disappoint. From the very first episode, I was hooked... so much that I completed it in 2 days, that's how amazing and fantastic this is. The way Zang Hai meticulously carried out the revenge one by one, it was so SATISFYING to watch. Every character was flawless in acting. The villains are flawless too. This is also one of those C-dramas with ABSOLUTELY NO UGLY CAST. It was hands down a brilliant masterpiece. Nothing short was expected from Xiao Zhan anyway. Anyone who has watched this, has cheered for Zang Hai throughout the drama I know. It quickly caught the viewer's attention. And the romance part was so satisfying too. They actually let the characters build real connection before jumping into romance. It was by far the most genuine romance I have seen, with minimum skinship and maximum affection for each other. Highly recommended if you like thrillers with romance sprinkles.

Great until the halfway point

Pros:
1) Zang hai and his elaborate revenge planning abilities
2) loved the complexity of the marquis (officially one of my favourite antagonists of all time I swear he and that entire house is so well written and executed)
3) Gauo Mein. Just him and his entire arc
4) the whole toumbs and elaborate mechanisms of the sets
5) the only genuine plot twist I felt was the astronomer being one of caos men
6) the acting of the whole cast was wonderful

Cons:
1) compared to the marquis the other two felt very one dimensional and had had cartoon villain vibes.
2) left with more questions than answers like: why skin kai do and his wife? And why the prince who I forgot the name of existing we saw like three episodes of him and he randomly helps out in the end? Then some random takes the throne? How are hundreds of people dying on the street with the whole kill caos foster son arc and not a single minister noticing? What happened to antus elaborate network after she lost the zhen tower? Like the people still listen to you?
4) the second the masked dude mentioned the three people that were zang hais enemies and only name dropped two I could tell he was the third. Cause if you know the two are connected then you can fish out the third because obviously they have shared history. If you truly wanted to help your student then you'd pull through.
5) the princess becoming a background character in the second arc
6) zang hais his buddy deserves more screen time
7) the emperor is dumb as hell... Like seriously what did you think was gonna happen bro?
8) my biggest complaint is it just got so disoriented towards the end
