Satisfying binge-watched drama
Story: Top notch! fast paced, ruthless, dark revenge drama. Satisfying yet realistic. I haven't found another revenge drama as amazing as this drama after I finished Nirvana in Fire. The difference between them is the MC's characteristic, Mei Changsu is super smart strategist with outstanding supporters who are loyal and protective to him, and he also had politic background because he was military official before he was betrayed. But Zang Hai is a commoner, although his father is also palace official, he is only third rank with no supporter at all. That makes this drama more realistic than NIF. Zang Hai's plan not always successfully done, he is sometimes has to depend on his luck. Every character in this drama is morally grey, not even one can be trusted. There are a lot of plot twist and never-ending mystery until the end. I just can't get enough when watching this drama.Acting: Xiao Zhan acting is the core and the strength of this drama. He has huge improvement in his acting, he infused a soul to Zang Hai hence made audience felt this character's emotions. The most dynamic I love is Zang Hai with his master Gao Ming. All the villains gave an outstanding performance, I love and hate them all. Although the romance only a side trope, it is still sweet to see Zang Hai little happiness. This drama indeed is a Male MC-centric drama because it's the first time I found in c-drama which has no side character PoV at all.
Production: This drama production is breathtakingly beautiful. The director is meticulously craft every scene, the music, the architecture, the art, all are representing Chinese culture in depth aesthetic. Btw, this is like the first costume drama which I didn't see any guzheng, pipa, flute and Chinese chess in most scenes.
Overall: I will re-watch this drama, the most satisfying drama after many years.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!
I found the finale quite frustrating. The narrative held strong until the death of the marquis, but then the subsequent installments steadily grew tiresome. It felt as if the ending was expedited, and the scriptwriter just cobbled together whatever ideas they had. Still, Xiao Zhan's performance was so outstanding that I'm bumping my rating to 6.5 stars. Was this review helpful to you?
Suffers from Poor Writing/Script
From the Plot description I was expecting something similar to Nirvana in Fire. While it started promising, what develops is largely disappointing and unsatisfying.
MC apparently trained for 10 years, (yes not completed), still, a WHOLE decade under SEVERAL "Masters".
You would think in all that time, they would be setting up networks, collecting information, and preparing and planning ahead.
Nope.
For someone who is built up to be an intelligent and meticulous strategist who has the support of "Masters" in their craft.
Zang Hai is consistently under prepared, consistently underestimates his opponents. Consistently is bailed out by other people. He does not seem to plan out anything meticulously, and it is more like MC's winging it as he goes. And is surprised when someone pulls one over him. LOL.
A naive, ignorant, uninformed, arrogant, righteous without power MC who shows flashes of brilliance.
Writers really let this one down.

Every Episode is a hit!
C-dramas often have a pattern: a strong start, a shaky middle, and then a rushed ending that tries to tie everything up. But this drama breaks that mold completely. From the very first episode to the last, there’s a clear structure, consistent pacing, and unwavering quality. I watched it as it aired, and not once did I feel like dropping it or even hesitating to hit “next episode.” It held my attention from start to finish.
The protagonists were compelling and easy to root for—but what truly stood out were the villains. All three were incredibly well-written, layered, and deeply impactful. They weren’t just obstacles for the leads—they were characters with motives, emotions, and presence. Honestly, they might be some of the best antagonists I’ve ever seen in a C-drama.
There was a moment when the Marquis tried to manipulate Zang Hai, and I genuinely felt like I was being manipulated through the screen. That’s how powerful and immersive the writing was. He was absolutely despicable, yet somehow the story made me pity him at times. That’s the hallmark of great storytelling.
This drama flows like a river through a valley—rapid, full of twists and sharp turns, never predictable. And when it finally reaches the end, there’s a sense of calm and closure. But even then, there are hints—like hidden undercurrents beneath still water—that suggest more could be lurking below the surface. I can't help but wonder if a Season 2 might be coming. The story certainly left doors open, and if you know anything about rivers, you know stillness doesn’t always mean safety. That said, even if it ends here—and I’d honestly be more than satisfied if it does—this was an excellent conclusion. Yes, there are a few things I would’ve liked to see fleshed out—lingering questions, small moments—but that’s life. As viewers, we don’t need every detail handed to us. In fact, sometimes overly conclusive endings make it feel like the characters simply vanish once the credits roll.
But an ending like this—hopeful, slightly open, but grounded—gives the sense that the characters are still out there somewhere, living on. And that, in its own way, is more comforting and real than tying everything up with a neat little bow.

literally the mask man is just like too op and also can easily rule over the country.
3 powerful man want to change the world but the producer want to send message out " poor keep poor and don't rise" " all die"
what we learn from this drama? nothing beside entertainment

MASTERPIECE WITH A EMOTIONAL + HIT ENDING!
As a fan of Xiao Zhan, I can be biased, but man, can you criticize anything in it? You have to admit it; his visual, his acting, the co-stars, the story, and the revenge being my thing - I loved the storytelling. There was not a single boring episode! No unnecessary banter or dialogue! Every episode is an emotional rollercoaster! The series, being a fictional drama, is a historical documentary, so it's not inherently designed to be informative about ancient history in retrospect. While it uses historical settings and characters, its primary focus is on storytelling. That's why it's even more entertaining!
For those who enjoy historical-revenge-sub-romance plots, this is it for you.

Raised the bar for Revenge Dramas
I watched this on an impulse and didn't have any expectations but since the introduction offered a such compelling scene with the ghost zombie-like soldiers, I chose to stay and watch for more. Thankfully, it offered more flesh and the story with the ML's family was pretty done well. The death of ML's family was really done well, not that I liked it but it was compelling enough to keep on watching and anticipating to the revenge. For the actual plot and writing, it is generally good for me. Some ppl complain on plot holes but I followed the events just well particularly on the earlier episodes when the drama was still focusing on the 1st enemy (MPJ) which was basically the foundation of the whole revenge. I literally cried for Ping Jin's death even though he was an enemy who was personally present during the family's death. I also hate him to the core and I felt for the ML when he discovered his skinned parents. But I think one good thing about Legend of Zang Hai is that especially for Ping Jin, it gives depth to an enemy's character. They have done bad things in the past and still harbor bad intentions up to the present, but they are still humans who have heart. Did he deserve to die? Yes. But as a watcher I was rlly touched during that iconic moment. That's why I rlly appreciated LOZH for presenting an almost perfect dynamics between someone who soughts revenge (Zang Hai) and someone being plotted a revenge on (3 enemies, but Ping Jin was the most worthy enemy portrayed in the drama).
Anyways, plottwists and the mystery keeps a lot of fans guessing even near the end which is a sign a lot of the watchers are rlly entertained and hooked on the drama, including me.
For the romance, it is a subplot so there are times when the ML's buddies/masters and enemies have more screen time than the FL but I don't rlly have an issue with that. Despite the limited screen time tgt, the FL and ML still had chemistry for me. This chemistry kind of lied down starting ep 31 onwards (because they were already tgt, no more angst and playing around catching feelings lmao) but eitherway it was forgivable for me as mainly I'm in it for the revenge.
There are still details or events which weren't explained or clarified quite clearly, atleast for me and that's on me to catch up and work on my comprehension LMAO, sooo for many fans those were just pretty understandable and honestly all discussions about it just shows ppl are intrigued on the plot.
Aside from Ping Jin's death, I was also emotional on Gao Ming shifu's death lyk that scene when he waved turning back from Zang Hai, that is emotional and sad. His character was one of the entertaining and interesting ones and like the ML I also trusted him.
For the music, I didn't care much and it wasn't also fascinating, atleast for me, but the OSTs suited the scenes they were played on just well which is good enough.
Overall, it's not perfect but for me who's quite very very picky in dramas, it's rlly a good revenge drama. This is officially the cdrama that made me appreciate Xiao Zhan as an actor (I rlly didn't like The Untamed despite being a Yibo fan), but thanks to LOZH I finally finished a XZ drama. I'd say he rlly suited the character and yeah he is famous but I also think he rlly committed to the character and he played Zang Hai well.
That's all! Happy cultivating cdrama fans and everyone!!! <33333

So so
"Legend of Zang Hai" is a drama I personally found very boring. The story starts with a strong setup, where the main lead, after just two episodes, is trained by his father’s companion to take revenge for his father’s death. From that point on, the entire plot revolves solely around this revenge angle. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t branch out much from this single goal. As a result, it feels repetitive and predictable. There is a slight romantic subplot, but it is not developed enough to make the drama emotionally engaging or captivating for me.Although the cast is talented and the acting is decent, the overall story lacks depth and variety. The characters don’t go through much growth, and the emotional arcs are not very satisfying. The pace of the drama is also quite slow, which made it difficult for me to stay invested.
I usually enjoy Chinese historical dramas a lot, especially when they include a blend of emotions and twists. What I personally look for in such stories is a mix of revenge, jealousy, love, a bit of light-hearted comedy, and some action or fighting sequences. Unfortunately, "Legend of Zang Hai" focuses too heavily on revenge and forgets to balance the story with other elements.
To sum up, I was quite disappointed with this drama. It had potential in the beginning, but the lack of diversity in the storyline and weak romantic development made it hard for me to enjoy. If someone is looking for a drama full of emotion, suspense, and varied storytelling, I wouldn’t recommend this one.

Surprisingly overrated
As much as I love Zhan Xiao as a lead actor, the plot is so convoluted that it never quite hits the mark. Oftentimes, the rationale behind certain decisions and actions is so weak that they have to dedicate an equal amount of screen time explaining how each "clever scheme" is supposed to work in order for us to understand the significance of these events. This has nothing to do with the audience being lazy and needing to be spoonfed, as some reviewers might suggest, but is a sign that the storyline could have been better executed.I must admit, the first few episodes really piqued my interest, but it loses momentum shortly after. Overall, the show isn't terrible, but the amount of people hyping it up as a 10/10 is ridiculous.

a fun watch if you can suspend disbelief
It definitely has some plot holes and a fair amount of convenient main character plot armour, but the vibe, tension and pacing of the show is good, so I didn't feel like the flaws seriously detracted from my overall enjoymentThe ending of the mystery of the Gui Seal is kind of questionable in my opinion, and I wasn't really sold on the justification for why the third enemy did Evil Things, but again it wasn't enough to seriously hinder my enjoyment.
also the music ate, especially the ending

A must watch revengeful drama
To begin with, I have been following every news about this drama. I know what the plot should be based on the synopsis. I was intrigued as someone who loves to watch heavily revengeful characters (I also love to read wattpad, novel and manhwa about this kind of genre—but I am most obsessed with manhwa with pro-antagonist evil revengeful villainess like—Roxana characters right now 😅). So, I had to expect a lot for this drama. The excitement was overwhelming, and to my expectations the drama didn’t failed me! Legend of ZangHai delivered every plot insanely with meticulous execution. The cinematography is a visual feast. And I like how historic it feels.XiaoZhan—as ZangHai (Zhinu) character is not extraordinary as you think. He is normal with intelligence as his weapon to overshadow his powerful enemies. You would think it is impossible for him to fully execute his revenge especially since his foes are martial arts masters and he’s at a disadvantage. That tension just adds to the thrill!
My mind is focused to the plot while my eyes is glued with ZangHai handsomeness (I am multitasker 🤣)
To continue, Xiao Zhan’s ability to balance Zang Hai’s sharp intellect with heartfelt empathy ensures the character feels human, not just a vehicle for the plot. His commanding screen presence, refined through years of stage and screen work, shines in both grand political moments and quieter, introspective scenes, making him the emotional core of the series.
I don’t want to say more since I will be overly spoiling the drama. 😭

The most compact drama in term of plot I have watched in recent years.
[P.S. I am sharing the comment I wrote here 20 days ago. This contains a bit of explanation of revenge drama MC personality so thought of sharing it in the review section just so that more people could understand Zhang Hai]I just finished this drama today. I finished episode 1 to 35 long ago; just kept putting off the last 5 episodes because I didn't want it to end. This is the most compact drama of 40 episodes I have ever watched, literally no unnecessary fillers ; even the romance felt so complete and touching despite being a subplot which was better than many romance focused dramas. I will just write a review about some things I really liked about this drama.
Firstly, There are many hit dramas but beautiful plot delivery is rare. This drama really nailed this point. Its like one inch more or less would have led it astray. They presented the characterization of every character in every stage of plot beautifully. For example, when main lead Zhang Hai first comes to the capital before he finishes his training and his schemes at the beginning are shown a bit green as it should be along with the nervousness of a young man also hatred/anger that he finds difficult to hide from others' gazes. But with every small step forward towards his goal we see him become a seasoned tactician.
Secondly, there was some tiny elements of lucky-break / gary stu conveniences which was interlaced with the plot so well that it didn't feel abnormal or weird, it just gave the feeling that if it was a novel I would say " in a story there are some coincidences/ circumstances needed to make the story smooth flowing" . In a word, it felt just normal.
Third point and the most important one, as the male lead of a revenge story Zhang Hai was set as an upright man from start to end which is also rare. Because, revenge dramas/novels main characters find it difficult to maintain their bottom completely or not hurting/using the innocent for their own purpose. Throughout the whole plot Zhang Hai's father Kuai Duo's shadow was always there to show that Zhang Hai was influenced by his father's principles for example the carriage flashback scene why his father always walked..so no matter how difficult it was Zhang Hai never bend his moral bottom line although it made his revenge path much harder. So, despite being a revenge drama character, Zhang Hai never came off as a hypocrite or annoying rather positive and upright despite the darkness and gloom of revenge which I found remarkable. Zhang Hai was made a complex but extremely likeable character. We know In some revenge drama/novels if MC was set as upright it might look naive or holy father; In some story characters are shown as upright with principles but then the plot will show that MC has involved/implicated people unrelated to his conspiracies because he was helpless, no choice blah blah... in a word hypocrite. But this drama successfully avoided all this and made the character Zhang Hai brilliant.
All in all, kudos to the actors, directors, production team for delivering a drama of such high quality
