Held my interest ... until it didn't

Reading some of the other reviews made me realize I pretty much guessed how this one ended up... bummer because it started out so well. I just skipped to the end and it confirmed that I was right to do that.
I realized the only character I really liked was Pingjin Ho, his was captivating and the actor who played the role had an astounding screen presence.
Watch it I guess if you have time to kill.

Legendary Start, Let Down Gently ? C-Drama Rookie’s Honest Review

This is my first historical C-drama, & probably my 4th or 5th attempt at C-dramas overall. I’ve been watching dramas for nearly a decade, usually leaning toward Korean & Japanese dramas or movies. I’ve had countless recommendations—both online & from friends—to try C-dramas, but other than RESET, none really grabbed me. Legend of Zang Hai changed that after a long drought, though only until around Episode 27–32.

➥ PROS: I loved the beginning—it pulled me into a world of mystery surrounding the Gui Seal & Zang Hai’s personal mission of revenge. Watching him grow, outsmart enemies through intelligence, & form alliances under his mentor's guidance was fascinating. This buildup held strong until about Ep 31–32, as the mystery deepened around both the artifact & the true villains. I especially enjoyed the Ep 20–30 stretch with key battles. The suspense, clever characters, & the beautifully crafted world—scenic shots, costumes, direction, & music—all worked well.

➥ CONS: This might be personal, but I prefer fast-paced stories—ones that barely give you time to breathe. In that regard, this one moved painfully slow. I even paused midway to check out other dramas. That said, the pacing wasn’t a dealbreaker.

The bigger issues were (1) the romance subplot, (2) the predictable mystery antagonist, & (3) the main character acting against his established traits.

(1) Romance: Even as a subplot, it felt unnecessary & a bit forced. For political revenge stories, I prefer a romance-free arc—it just dilutes the intensity. The early banter was fine, but by the Ep 20s it got awkward enough for me to skip ahead. I liked the FL’s fighter persona & wish she’d stayed an ally—or let romance blossom after the mission. I get that it was meant to show a softer side of the ML, but it didn’t quite land for me.

(2) Mysterious Antagonist: Firstly, for me it was quite predictable early on who this person would be—so it lost points there. Secondly when the reveal was done—it is such a tried/tested formula that it did not leave me shocked/surprised—rather disappointed that for such a good drama build-up, the writers chose the usual path.

(3) ML Defying His Personality: The romance arc mainly caused this shift. He was advised (though not firmly) not to let anyone sway him. Yet he does—more than once. Despite having capable allies, he trusts the FL, reveals his identity, & even believes her mother—the Queen—who was a key suspect. If you’re on a mission this critical, shouldn’t doubt come before trust? This inconsistency, after so much character development, was hard to overlook.

➥ Overall Recommendation to Watch: MAYBE Since this is my first historical C-drama, maybe I’m being too harsh. I liked the lead actor, the performances overall, & the cinematography. But the slow pace & glaring issues dulled the impact for me. So—I wouldn’t recommend it if you share similar preferences. But if you’re into historical/political C-dramas & are okay with the slow burn & romance subplot, this might still work for you.

As I always say, drama time is precious—so choose wisely. I have shared my POV—but do read different rated reviews to see if this is your cup of tea or not—as this is an investment of 40 long episodes, so make it worth your while. Cheers!

Intriguing All the Way to the End!

Legend of Zang Hai is one of those dramas that keeps you engaged with confident storytelling, good pacing and nice visuals. I didn’t emotionally bond with the characters in quite the same way as I have with some other C-dramas, but that didn’t take away from how much I thoroughly enjoyed this series. And let’s be honest - sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and appreciate the craft.

At first glance, the premise appears to follow a typical revenge arc. But it quickly reveals itself to be something far more layered: a narrative about political manoeuvring, strategy, and the complex web of interpersonal relationships that underpin Zang Hai’s world.

The writing is tight. Every character action, motivation, and consequence is anchored in a solid backstory and emotional logic. That should be a given in any script but we know it’s not always the case in C-dramaland! I feel the writers treated the material, and the characters, with the respect these deserve.

Plot-wise, the twists are clever and the reveals well-timed, keeping viewers engaged to the end. There is a nice resolution in the end.

The casting is solid. Xiao Zhan is compelling in the lead role. This is my first time seeing his work, and I found his portrayal of Zang Hai to be measured, layered, and full of subtle angst. A complex role, well executed. I did feel a subtle lack of chemistry between the ML and FL. However, given that romance is not a central pillar of the plot, it’s not a deal breaker for me.

What moved me was the relationship between Zang Hai and Master Gao Ming. It is heart-warming, well-explored and for the most part, sincere. A gentle light in the otherwise cold and difficult world of Zang Hai.

In short: this is a series worth your time. If you're after something engaging, visually polished, and grounded in good writing, Legend of Zang Hai delivers. Hope you enjoyed it too. :)

In the end, it was an interesting drama, but one I will not carry with me among the best.

At last, I have finished it.
I must admit that I delayed a little during the final episodes, yet I do not regret choosing this drama.

Indeed, it is a difficult choice to make. Chinese productions are so numerous and diverse that it is truly impossible to give proper attention to, or fully appreciate, the majority of them.

Perhaps it would be a bit easier if I were to focus on a specific genre—but that is not the case. I enjoy them all, except for comedy. Therefore, if the plot is good, that is enough for me. In fact, I am currently watching an excellent crime drama, *The Perfect Suspect* (2025, Chinese), though unfortunately it seems to be rather underappreciated.

Now, let us talk about *Legend of Zang Hai*.

At first, the drama struck me as intense, vibrant, and full of great expectations—be it for the cast, the script, the direction, or the grand scale of production.

There were memorable moments, filled with suspense and mystery. The construction of the plot, paired with strong villains portrayed with outstanding performances, was truly remarkable.

The decision to focus on vengeance and keep the romance minimal seemed to me quite tasteful. Although I appreciated Xiao Zhan's performance, I could not bring myself to feel truly captivated by his character, Zang Hai. His younger version was brilliant, but the adult man, though attractive, lacked charm.

Zhang Jing Yi, as Princess An Tu, delivered a solid performance, yet her character promised much and contributed little—both as an individual and as a romantic partner.

It might have been better had the character been male, or not existed at all. She was, in truth, irrelevant.

On the other hand, when well executed, a revenge arc is very compelling. However, once numerous innocent lives begin to be taken without reason, the thrill becomes bitter, or loses most of its appeal.

The mysterious object of desire, the Gui Seal, proved ineffective, unremarkable, and far below the expectations it set at the beginning. Truly a disappointment—poorly explored, left unresolved, it appeared and vanished without offering any substantial contribution to the plot.

In the end, it was an interesting drama, but one I will not carry with me among the best.

My apologies to the fans.

Good plot, but could have been less episodes

Overall, this was totally worth the watch.

XZ delivers an amazing performance - probably one of his best - worth it just for his performance.
My only issue here is the usual, having an actor who is in their 30's play a character who is only 20yrs old - its pretty obvious he isn't 20 anymore (which is not a bad thing) - so those places where it falters are the places where he is supposed to come across as this youngin' and it just doesnt work - cause, its obvious he isn't anymore. But, you can let it slide, cause the rest of his character is great.
This story is VERY slowed paced - so be prepared, it DRAGS. Honestly, it could have been at least 10 episodes shorter.
The story is interesting and the thing that really keeps you watching is trying to figure out who the masked man is/3rd enemy.
The Marquis villain - mostly done well. I kept not being sure if he was truly bad or not. And the whole parents clothes/skin in the basement made no sense and wasn't really explained why he had them. it just felt kind of inconsistent with his character - so could have seen the eunach villain doing this.
The Eunuch villain - creepy as F*CK!
Minister Zhao - also creepy - but it's the dead eyes that just gave me the heebie-jeebies.
FL - really just a supporting character and mostly a plot ploy as a romantic interest for the ML. She wasn't bad - but it was an odd character. She is super-helpful at times and I did like that she was a smart, fierce woman - but they tempered it too much with her just being a brat (although this does go away after a bit, which I was happy with because I was starting to not like her at all).
Goa Ming - he was wonderful and this relationship was so sweet, which made the end so much sadder.
The boyhood friends - such a great addition. I loved the found family aspect of all of this.

I totally didn't why he didn't her make fake bronze fish?

Costuming was beautiful - simple, but spot on - I loved it.
Cinematography was pretty good as well.

Not sure who was in charge of wigs - but ZX's wig just bugged me the whole time - too clean around the edges and it was obvious it was a wig - minor annoyance, but still bugged - lol!

Story line

this drama truly shines in its pacing, world-building, and emotional depth, but one thing keeps nagging at me: why was romance even necessary? the story already stands strong on its own, and honestly, removing the romance could have elevated the entire narrative. zang hai was a man shaped entirely by revenge, someone who lived and breathed for a single purpose, yet the script keeps inserting romantic distractions that weaken the sharpness of his journey. ten years is a long time to cultivate hatred and strategy, but somehow he still becomes careless in several key moments, which makes his character feel inconsistent.

i also feel that zang hai should have taken much longer to learn about the complexities between men and women, because those emotional entanglements clearly slowed down his pursuit of vengeance. xiang an tu, on the other hand, is portrayed as deeply vengeful yet hopelessly romantic at the same time, and her presence constantly disrupts zang hai’s path. her obsession adds tension, yes, but it also reveals how easily the story allows personal feelings to interfere with major plotlines.

another detail that confused me was zang hai’s declaration that he wanted to bury his parents properly, only for him to later choose to burn them. the contradiction feels jarring and almost illogical, especially coming from someone whose entire motivation revolves around honoring his parents’ memory. decisions like this make the narrative feel uneven, as if the emotional logic of the characters doesn’t always align with their stated intentions.

yet, strangely enough, once i got past episode 38, everything began to settle into place. the emotional beats finally connected, and i realized how carefully the entire story had actually been crafted. all the flaws, contradictions, and imperfections contribute to a larger emotional tapestry that hits surprisingly hard. despite my frustrations, i ended up feeling genuinely moved. the drama, with all its complexity and contradictions, is still beautifully designed and deeply touching in its own way.

It needs Season 2!

It made me feel like I'm part of a game instead of watching a drama. It felt like an immersive experience instead of passively watching! That's why I understand the mixed reviews at the same time the hype.

First, it's not the typical idol drama-its appeal is not for the hype it's more of a cinematic experience-and as for me I find myself asking questions along with the characters! That is why it does not appeal to everyone. There may be scenes that may seem boring, dragging but honestly it comes with the plot. I think it was intentionally made the viewer be attached and painstakingly be a part of the main character's journey.

The cast were amazing - they all shined in their own respective roles gave justice to them and more!

Xiao Zhan's chemistry with all the other main characters were amazing! The scenes were gripping and the mystery of these characters is what make this whole drama interesting. I always also look forward to all the other story and scenes with other characters. They all have interesting stories and the actors for the roles were also amazing!

Special mention!!
Duke Ping Jin and his son's character development what a well written character!

Scene stealer!!
Xiang An Tu! Zhang Jingyi was always so beautiful and great actress for me but seemed always with the same characters in her dramas BUT here, her character was the icebreaker! I was surprised of her versatility as an actress It didn't occur to me this type of character may suit her too love her and love how they wrote her character and her scenes are a scene stealer what a treat! She should not be underestimated!

What then stood out?
It's different from your usual male-centric idea of a male. Zang Hai is flawed, unsure, and calculating. He just makes use of what he has even without having that usual characteristic of male leads. He was not the typical high-ranking General, the glorified warrior, No outstanding fabled / mysterious martial artist. He was just an ordinary person that led an extraordinary life achieved with a journey filled with diligence, perseverance and the refusal to give up.

Zang Hai's grit led to his glory.

My only comment is the lack of chemistry of Main character-Zang Hai and the so called Master Gao Ming I don't know they supposedly have a tight bond/father-son bond but for me I find their scenes lacking/a bit boring-maybe due to lack of chemistry or what I tend to fast forward or play it at a higher speed when it's their scenes! haha

WHY SEASON 2?

The story has a lot of unfinished stories for me, needs more exploration, background and with that it has a lot of potential! A movie spinoff would also be ok considering the success it achieved- just anything that would give a background of the whole story! It's deep and wide and very interesting! It has a different point of view of fantasy - not straightforward that is why it does appeal to a lot of people especially for the impatient ones! hahahaha

Hero with no gong fu skills

The drama is well scripted and pretty well edited. I struggled to watch the remaining episodes. Some characters appeared entered into grey areas in the concluding efforts. The characters The revelation of the 3rd mastermind was indeed a surprise. It was unusual to see the female lead pursue the male lead romantically. It was comical to see her frustrations at his rejections. Her fervent efforts to rescue him on numerous occasions was her show of love. He was always a step ahead of his enemies and he always found solutions to defeat them despite lacking martial skills. I was confused at his first teacher choosing to commit suicide after he completed teaching the male lead. I finally understood the reasons later in the series. His 2 teachers were honourable people. It is good that this drama has a fairly large cast, to make the series interesting.

I really don't enjoy the CGI quality in this series. It really looks inferior.

Thrilling and Suspense

I love the plot of this drama. Each episodes are nerve-wrecking and you cannot guessed what will happen next. This is my first drama of Xiao Zhan and he deserved all the hype. I like when the character is smart but with reasonable explanations. Other drama potrays smart FL and ML by just by the script in their head but zanghai is different, his action is what makes him smart. Also I love the chemistry between Zanghai and the Marquis even though they're enemy

My March Recommendation Drama

Watched this for my Recommendation Challenge from 𝑭𝒖𝒌𝒂𝒊. Let’s talk movie…

The story centers on Zhi Nu (ZN), the son of the Imperial Astronomer of the Da Yong Kingdom. His life is shattered in a single night when his entire family is massacred by Marquis Ping Jin—because his father possessed something the Marquis was searching for from the Dongxia Kingdom. ZN is the only one who survives.

Rescued by a loyal friend of his father, he’s taken to a remote village and placed under the guidance of two masters. For ten years, he trains, not for glory—but for revenge.

Ten years later, he returns to the capital under a new identity: Zang Hai (ZH), now a master of architecture, Feng Shui and political strategy.

ZH’s main goal is to infiltrate the inner circle of his enemies—especially Marquis Ping Jin—and bring those responsible for his family’s massacre to justice. But soon, he discovers that the Marquis was not acting alone. There are two more people involved, making a total of three targets for his revenge.

Relying on his intellect rather than brute force, ZH carefully navigates the dangerous world of the imperial court, eventually rising to become the new Imperial Astronomer. Along the way, he uncovers the identities of the other culprits—except for the final one, who remains hidden in the shadows.

As ZH climbs higher, his personal vengeance begins to collide with something greater. When corrupt officials threaten to drag the nation into war, he faces a choice:
Continue down the path of hatred…
Or protect the people—and the kingdom his father once served.

Fortunately, ZH is no longer alone. Along his journey, he finds people he can trust—his allies, friends, his new “family”—who support him both emotionally and strategically. They help him carry the weight, soften his heart, remind him what it means to live beyond vengeance.

But just when everything seems to fall into place, betrayal strikes from an unexpected place.

So, how will it all end?
Will ZH finally achieve his revenge?
Or will the cost—of blood, of trust, of self—be too great to bear?

That's pretty much the story without giving anymore spoilers.

What I like:
+ Xiao Zhan as usual not disappointed
+ Quite interesting story & amazing transformation, from ZH who only care about revenge, and in the end he found his ‘people / family’
+ How ZH differentiate between his vengeance and innocent people, especially with Zhuang Zhi Xing. I really happy they have genuine friendship & respect.

What I don’t like:
- There’re times when this can be quite brutal. Like how the way ZH hardened his heart for An Tu. It really ache my heart when I watched it...

Overall this really a good drama to be watched.

Palace intrigues, Zang Hai's revenge, power struggles, diabolical plots, convoluted mysteries that we always manage to unravel... it's all very well done. It's a joy to watch each episode. It's a long and beautiful play about the corruption of power and revenge. The plot keeps us in suspense, wondering what schemes Zang Hai has been plotting right under our noses without us noticing, and suddenly he extricates himself from the trap he has fallen into, that mischievous little raccoon. I think it's brilliant that the main character doesn't know how to fight with weapons, but with his mind, his rhetoric, and his knowledge of the mysteries of power. Following him has been fascinating.

The music in this series is simply wonderful. It varies greatly, doesn't repeat itself too much, and adds so much to the atmosphere and elegant grace of the staging. The musical composition is exemplary, making you feel respected, with the main theme returning tirelessly without becoming boring. The sets and costumes are equally impressive. It's incredibly beautiful. A feast for the eyes and ears. Episode 27, the putsch episode with percussion and soldiers' choirs throughout, was masterful.

There are sword fights in the rain, of course. How could there not be ?

All this is very good, but... what a beautiful couple Zang Hai and Zhuang Zixing make. They gaze at each other intently and tenderly, take hot baths together (‘It's not a coincidence. You came here for me, didn't you ?’), and meet secretly at night. Just like Princess Antu and her good childhood friend, Eight. Very very close friends and affectionate, of course. No double meanings, naturally. What do you think... *turns the table upside down* Stop the queerbaiting ! you're not Disney, are you ? Kiss each other, for God's sake ! I've put incense everywhere, sorry.

Intelligence and smart wit in taking revenge. Xiao Zhan was phenomenal

The Legend of Zang Hai is a costume drama that involves intelligence and manipulation on the part of Zang Hai/Zhi Nu to solve the murders of his family members.

Xiao Zhan did a phenomenal job portraying these two characters, demonstrating good wit, intelligence, and a high EQ. The other leads also did a good job, especially Huang Jue. His character was eventually betrayed by Zhi Nu, his most trusted confidant.

The entire ensemble cast did a good job. Master Gao Ming betrayed Zhi Nu, but eventually sacrificed his life to save Zhi Nu from Zhao Bing Wen (who rescued Zang Hai and raised him with the help of others), but was killed by Zang Hai's smartness.

Very minimal romance between Xiao Zhan's character and Zhang Jing Yi's character.

Synopsis: Zang Hai was originally the son of the Imperial Astronomer. However, when he was young, he witnessed the murder of his entire family. Deciding on the path of revenge, Zang Hai withdrew from the scene temporarily and began training himself by learning construction and the art of war. Ten years later, he returned to the capital as an unrecognizable figure and became, through mentoring, the adviser to his enemy, Duke Ping Jin. From the Lord's manor to the court, from an ordinary advisor to becoming the chief minister of the imperial cabinet, Zang Hai struggled in the face of treacherous political plots and battles, finally getting a chance to kill his enemy. However, he soon discovered that not everything was as it appeared and that he had just scratched the surface of something much bigger. Facing an unknown road ahead, Zang Hai teamed up with his beloved friends to overcome and uncover the conspiracy, defending their country.
