Story line
this drama truly shines in its pacing, world-building, and emotional depth, but one thing keeps nagging at me: why was romance even necessary? the story already stands strong on its own, and honestly, removing the romance could have elevated the entire narrative. zang hai was a man shaped entirely by revenge, someone who lived and breathed for a single purpose, yet the script keeps inserting romantic distractions that weaken the sharpness of his journey. ten years is a long time to cultivate hatred and strategy, but somehow he still becomes careless in several key moments, which makes his character feel inconsistent.i also feel that zang hai should have taken much longer to learn about the complexities between men and women, because those emotional entanglements clearly slowed down his pursuit of vengeance. xiang an tu, on the other hand, is portrayed as deeply vengeful yet hopelessly romantic at the same time, and her presence constantly disrupts zang hai’s path. her obsession adds tension, yes, but it also reveals how easily the story allows personal feelings to interfere with major plotlines.
another detail that confused me was zang hai’s declaration that he wanted to bury his parents properly, only for him to later choose to burn them. the contradiction feels jarring and almost illogical, especially coming from someone whose entire motivation revolves around honoring his parents’ memory. decisions like this make the narrative feel uneven, as if the emotional logic of the characters doesn’t always align with their stated intentions.
yet, strangely enough, once i got past episode 38, everything began to settle into place. the emotional beats finally connected, and i realized how carefully the entire story had actually been crafted. all the flaws, contradictions, and imperfections contribute to a larger emotional tapestry that hits surprisingly hard. despite my frustrations, i ended up feeling genuinely moved. the drama, with all its complexity and contradictions, is still beautifully designed and deeply touching in its own way.

On the edge of my seat every two episodes.
While I have my own critique about the decisions of the last round of, probably ten last episodes, when it comes to the script's timeline, I have to say that last scene saved it with the meaning of a great journey. Sometimes stories are for the characters themselves, and Zang Hai's journey deserved that change of pacing in his own life.A taste of happiness, and melancholy, an usual feeling in cdramas, that I personally vibe with.
A series that had me on the edge of my seat every two episodes, it's not something that usually happens.
There's a scene of more or less ten minutes that barely had spoken words, with Zang Hai planning and plotting, focused in the Gui Seal, as a prior action scene. And I was thinking, if this series was a western production, instead of ten minutes, that scene would have lasted barely five seconds. So I can't stop thinking about how chinese series really put emphasis on the art, all that craft would've gone to waste in tv series that have no idea how to write nor to respect an audience. So I hope chinese productions always keep their craft chinese, and focused on the art of making, and always keep the craft above hegemonic hypes. Culture is beautiful when it's not invisible.
The cast, the craft, the direction, wonderful.

It needs Season 2!
It made me feel like I'm part of a game instead of watching a drama. It felt like an immersive experience instead of passively watching! That's why I understand the mixed reviews at the same time the hype.First, it's not the typical idol drama-its appeal is not for the hype it's more of a cinematic experience-and as for me I find myself asking questions along with the characters! That is why it does not appeal to everyone. There may be scenes that may seem boring, dragging but honestly it comes with the plot. I think it was intentionally made the viewer be attached and painstakingly be a part of the main character's journey.
The cast were amazing - they all shined in their own respective roles gave justice to them and more!
Xiao Zhan's chemistry with all the other main characters were amazing! The scenes were gripping and the mystery of these characters is what make this whole drama interesting. I always also look forward to all the other story and scenes with other characters. They all have interesting stories and the actors for the roles were also amazing!
Special mention!!
Duke Ping Jin and his son's character development what a well written character!
Scene stealer!!
Xiang An Tu! Zhang Jingyi was always so beautiful and great actress for me but seemed always with the same characters in her dramas BUT here, her character was the icebreaker! I was surprised of her versatility as an actress It didn't occur to me this type of character may suit her too love her and love how they wrote her character and her scenes are a scene stealer what a treat! She should not be underestimated!
What then stood out?
It's different from your usual male-centric idea of a male. Zang Hai is flawed, unsure, and calculating. He just makes use of what he has even without having that usual characteristic of male leads. He was not the typical high-ranking General, the glorified warrior, No outstanding fabled / mysterious martial artist. He was just an ordinary person that led an extraordinary life achieved with a journey filled with diligence, perseverance and the refusal to give up.
Zang Hai's grit led to his glory.
My only comment is the lack of chemistry of Main character-Zang Hai and the so called Master Gao Ming I don't know they supposedly have a tight bond/father-son bond but for me I find their scenes lacking/a bit boring-maybe due to lack of chemistry or what I tend to fast forward or play it at a higher speed when it's their scenes! haha
WHY SEASON 2?
The story has a lot of unfinished stories for me, needs more exploration, background and with that it has a lot of potential! A movie spinoff would also be ok considering the success it achieved- just anything that would give a background of the whole story! It's deep and wide and very interesting! It has a different point of view of fantasy - not straightforward that is why it does appeal to a lot of people especially for the impatient ones! hahahaha

Hero with no gong fu skills
The drama is well scripted and pretty well edited. I struggled to watch the remaining episodes. Some characters appeared entered into grey areas in the concluding efforts. The characters The revelation of the 3rd mastermind was indeed a surprise. It was unusual to see the female lead pursue the male lead romantically. It was comical to see her frustrations at his rejections. Her fervent efforts to rescue him on numerous occasions was her show of love. He was always a step ahead of his enemies and he always found solutions to defeat them despite lacking martial skills. I was confused at his first teacher choosing to commit suicide after he completed teaching the male lead. I finally understood the reasons later in the series. His 2 teachers were honourable people. It is good that this drama has a fairly large cast, to make the series interesting.I really don't enjoy the CGI quality in this series. It really looks inferior.

Thrilling and Suspense
I love the plot of this drama. Each episodes are nerve-wrecking and you cannot guessed what will happen next. This is my first drama of Xiao Zhan and he deserved all the hype. I like when the character is smart but with reasonable explanations. Other drama potrays smart FL and ML by just by the script in their head but zanghai is different, his action is what makes him smart. Also I love the chemistry between Zanghai and the Marquis even though they're enemyWas this review helpful to you?

My March Recommendation Drama
Watched this for my Recommendation Challenge from 𝑭𝒖𝒌𝒂𝒊. Let’s talk movie…The story centers on Zhi Nu (ZN), the son of the Imperial Astronomer of the Da Yong Kingdom. His life is shattered in a single night when his entire family is massacred by Marquis Ping Jin—because his father possessed something the Marquis was searching for from the Dongxia Kingdom. ZN is the only one who survives.
Rescued by a loyal friend of his father, he’s taken to a remote village and placed under the guidance of two masters. For ten years, he trains, not for glory—but for revenge.
Ten years later, he returns to the capital under a new identity: Zang Hai (ZH), now a master of architecture, Feng Shui and political strategy.
ZH’s main goal is to infiltrate the inner circle of his enemies—especially Marquis Ping Jin—and bring those responsible for his family’s massacre to justice. But soon, he discovers that the Marquis was not acting alone. There are two more people involved, making a total of three targets for his revenge.
Relying on his intellect rather than brute force, ZH carefully navigates the dangerous world of the imperial court, eventually rising to become the new Imperial Astronomer. Along the way, he uncovers the identities of the other culprits—except for the final one, who remains hidden in the shadows.
As ZH climbs higher, his personal vengeance begins to collide with something greater. When corrupt officials threaten to drag the nation into war, he faces a choice:
Continue down the path of hatred…
Or protect the people—and the kingdom his father once served.
Fortunately, ZH is no longer alone. Along his journey, he finds people he can trust—his allies, friends, his new “family”—who support him both emotionally and strategically. They help him carry the weight, soften his heart, remind him what it means to live beyond vengeance.
But just when everything seems to fall into place, betrayal strikes from an unexpected place.
So, how will it all end?
Will ZH finally achieve his revenge?
Or will the cost—of blood, of trust, of self—be too great to bear?
That's pretty much the story without giving anymore spoilers.
What I like:
+ Xiao Zhan as usual not disappointed
+ Quite interesting story & amazing transformation, from ZH who only care about revenge, and in the end he found his ‘people / family’
+ How ZH differentiate between his vengeance and innocent people, especially with Zhuang Zhi Xing. I really happy they have genuine friendship & respect.
What I don’t like:
- There’re times when this can be quite brutal. Like how the way ZH hardened his heart for An Tu. It really ache my heart when I watched it...
Overall this really a good drama to be watched.

Game of Deception: Revenge fueled by layers of lies and manipulation | Socially undertrained ML
"One does not need to be evil to invite disaster." - Zang HaiI don't think I can begin this review without first addressing a major frustration—one that, unfortunately, hampered what was almost a flawless watching experience.
While the story's introduction effectively establishes the central mysteries, tragedies, and conflicts, the decision to deprive the male lead (Zang Hai) of essential social intelligence is a major flaw. Whether this was a choice made to facilitate a romance or to keep his moral conscience intact, it remains a significant hindrance to his revenge. His journey would have been far smoother and more efficient had his brilliance been paired with social awareness and keen perception required to navigate his surroundings and read the people around him.
What frustrated me most was how his lack of social intelligence repeatedly put him in danger. It reached a point where I started thinking, "He really was released into the public prematurely." It makes me question what he actually learned under Master Gao Ming. I was under the impression he’d been taught skepticism and social awareness, so why does it seem like he learned nothing about it beforehand?
It’s absurd how easily he was taken advantage of the moment he entered the capital. I understand he lacks knowledge of this new environment, but I find it hard to believe he failed to notice the red flags—especially since he’d been preparing for this return for years. Seeing him get tricked so quickly made me want to slap some sense into him. He should have been extra cautious because he cannot afford to fail! He was raised in the capital during his preteens and spent years with Master Gao Ming, who frequently took him to town to study social dynamics. I assumed he’d at least be able to see through basic schemes, but he clearly couldn't. I know he wasn't specifically trained to handle the deceptions of women, but it’s still unbelievable that he let his guard down the very moment he encountered one. He should have been much more guarded.
He was a promising, intelligent young man, so his development came as no surprise. Furthermore, he had excellent mentors who guided him until he mastered his craft. However, it was evident that he lacked basic street-smarts, which is disappointing considering he was mentored by the shrewd master, Gao Ming.
While he can devise brilliant plans, he often fails to consider the watchful eyes of his enemies. This oversight puts him at extreme risk and frequently jeopardizes his missions. It is frustrating to see him in constant danger due to lack of foresight and contingency planning. It makes me wonder: shouldn't he have anticipated this? Did his training with Gao Ming teach him nothing?, or has it all been for naught?
He was trained in craftsmanship, architecture, engineering, geomancy, and astronomy, but he was never properly trained in reading people’s hearts and minds. He tends to underestimate his enemies, which has led to the deaths of many who trusted him. Trusting him is a double-edged sword: people want victory, so they follow him because he seems capable, but they never expect that they will eventually have to sacrifice their own lives just so he can survive. In fact, the only reason he is still alive is because of the people who risk everything for him—and obviously, because he is the Male Lead. If he weren't, I bet he would have died less than 6 months after arriving in the capital.
He was so careless that even Zhuang Zhixing, whom he treated like a foolish hedonist, was perceptive enough to blow his cover! Honestly, if the plot wasn't written specifically to protect him, this drama would have ended before it even reached the halfway point.
I was frustrated at first, but I’ve since accepted the show's explanation that Master Liuchu’s training was incomplete, which explains the inadequacies and loopholes in his plans. Despite this, it remains my major grievance with the story. If only he had emerged from his years of training fully equipped with practical knowledge and situational awareness, he wouldn't have been nearly as disappointing as he appeared in the story. Maybe it’s just me and my lofty expectations, but it really soured my view of his character. Since I expected him to be fully prepared for his grand quest for revenge.
One of the most commendable aspects of this story is how closely the plot events are intertwined. Every subplot is well-written and executed seamlessly. Although I had a hunch about the final villain’s identity, the revelation was still incredibly satisfying. It was impressive to see how he masterfully orchestrated the scheme from the start, manipulating everyone until the very end. It was a thrilling ride that built genuine excitement for the climax and denouement of the story.
I really appreciate that they didn't take a supernatural route with the Ghost Soldiers towards the end. Instead, they kept the explanation logical, using science and hallucinogenic chemicals. This keeps the story grounded in reality and avoids deviating into a fictional universe. It strongly reminded me of the world-building in The Lost Tomb.
I was initially conflicted about the lead couple's chemistry, given their rocky first encounter and the risk of her becoming a distraction to his revenge—especially since he never learned how to resist women's seductive charms. However, the more they interact, the more their natural chemistry becomes undeniable. The deep devotion between Xiang Antu and Zanghai is admirable. Even though their bond was forged in deceit, seeing them genuinely fall for one another makes their relationship feel far more authentic and compelling.
Lastly, the fight scene between Zhuang Luyin and Zhuang Zhixing in episode 28 was truly my favorite. It certainly wasn't the most amazing fight in the show, but it was definitely the most heart-wrenching scene in the drama. I was totally sold on how affectionate and loving Zhuang Luyin is as a father. He may be a horrendous person, but he is surely a great father. The way he guided Zhuang Zhixing to stab him while recalling their bonding moments—starting from his childhood—really hit a soft spot in me.
"There's no need to show hatred on your face. Keep it in your heart as your heart is yours alone, unseen by others." - Zang Hai
Story - 9.0, The plot was compact with a great succession of events that moved the story forward naturally. It would have been perfect if the male lead (ML) had been better prepared, considering he spent the last decade cultivating his talents for the sole purpose of revenge. His inability to sense or predict people's real intentions was a significant letdown given his preparations
Acting/Cast - 10, The cast was excellent, especially Xiao Zhan, whose facial expressions were spectacular. I wish Zhang Jingyi had more screen time and stronger dialogue because her character occasionally felt a bit bratty, which was off-putting. However, her impressive fight scenes and adaptability redeemed her. Without those strengths, my rating wouldn't be this high.
Music - 10, Each song expresses great sorrow and delivers pensive emotions that fit and elevate the show's overall theme. As a ballad lover, I really enjoy them—especially during scenes depicting intense grief and suffering.
Rewatch Value - 8.0, I enjoyed the overall story, but the issues with the ML are hard to overlook. Whenever I think of the show, those specific scenes come to mind, significantly dragging down my rating for this section.
Overall - 9.0, Based on my viewing experience, the show was enjoyable but far from 'stress-free.' The male lead's recurring incompetence was truly frustrating; he only survived because of the formidable plot armor that protected him until the end. Lol.

Palace intrigues, Zang Hai's revenge, power struggles, diabolical plots, convoluted mysteries that we always manage to unravel... it's all very well done. It's a joy to watch each episode. It's a long and beautiful play about the corruption of power and revenge. The plot keeps us in suspense, wondering what schemes Zang Hai has been plotting right under our noses without us noticing, and suddenly he extricates himself from the trap he has fallen into, that mischievous little raccoon. I think it's brilliant that the main character doesn't know how to fight with weapons, but with his mind, his rhetoric, and his knowledge of the mysteries of power. Following him has been fascinating. The music in this series is simply wonderful. It varies greatly, doesn't repeat itself too much, and adds so much to the atmosphere and elegant grace of the staging. The musical composition is exemplary, making you feel respected, with the main theme returning tirelessly without becoming boring. The sets and costumes are equally impressive. It's incredibly beautiful. A feast for the eyes and ears. Episode 27, the putsch episode with percussion and soldiers' choirs throughout, was masterful.
There are sword fights in the rain, of course. How could there not be ?
All this is very good, but... what a beautiful couple Zang Hai and Zhuang Zixing make. They gaze at each other intently and tenderly, take hot baths together (‘It's not a coincidence. You came here for me, didn't you ?’), and meet secretly at night. Just like Princess Antu and her good childhood friend, Eight. Very very close friends and affectionate, of course. No double meanings, naturally. What do you think... *turns the table upside down* Stop the queerbaiting ! you're not Disney, are you ? Kiss each other, for God's sake ! I've put incense everywhere, sorry.

Intelligence and smart wit in taking revenge. Xiao Zhan was phenomenal
The Legend of Zang Hai is a costume drama that involves intelligence and manipulation on the part of Zang Hai/Zhi Nu to solve the murders of his family members.Xiao Zhan did a phenomenal job portraying these two characters, demonstrating good wit, intelligence, and a high EQ. The other leads also did a good job, especially Huang Jue. His character was eventually betrayed by Zhi Nu, his most trusted confidant.
The entire ensemble cast did a good job. Master Gao Ming betrayed Zhi Nu, but eventually sacrificed his life to save Zhi Nu from Zhao Bing Wen (who rescued Zang Hai and raised him with the help of others), but was killed by Zang Hai's smartness.
Very minimal romance between Xiao Zhan's character and Zhang Jing Yi's character.
Synopsis: Zang Hai was originally the son of the Imperial Astronomer. However, when he was young, he witnessed the murder of his entire family. Deciding on the path of revenge, Zang Hai withdrew from the scene temporarily and began training himself by learning construction and the art of war. Ten years later, he returned to the capital as an unrecognizable figure and became, through mentoring, the adviser to his enemy, Duke Ping Jin. From the Lord's manor to the court, from an ordinary advisor to becoming the chief minister of the imperial cabinet, Zang Hai struggled in the face of treacherous political plots and battles, finally getting a chance to kill his enemy. However, he soon discovered that not everything was as it appeared and that he had just scratched the surface of something much bigger. Facing an unknown road ahead, Zang Hai teamed up with his beloved friends to overcome and uncover the conspiracy, defending their country.

Zang Hai has brains, luck and nine extra lives
I haven’t felt this kind of adrenaline from a Chinese drama since "The Story of Kunning Palace", and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for it. This drama is messy, exhilarating, occasionally nonsensical, and somehow exactly the kind of chaos that reminds me why I still bother pressing play on long-format C‑dramas. It’s the rare show where the cracks don’t kill the experience—they just give you more to yell at while you’re glued to the screen.Let’s start with Zhang Hai himself. For the first ten episodes, he’s the kind of protagonist who makes you sit up straighter: sharp, calculating, trauma-forged, and always three steps ahead. Then the writing decides to test my blood pressure by making him reckless, cocky, and occasionally stupid in ways that contradict his entire survival blueprint. The bathhouse incident? The premature identity reveal? The seal fiasco? All objectively idiotic. And yet—yet—I couldn’t look away. His hubris is maddening, but it’s also part of the thrill. You watch him unravel and think, “Sir, please stop sabotaging yourself,” while simultaneously enjoying every second of the unraveling.
Acting-wise, Xiao Zhan fits this role like he’s been waiting for it. I haven’t seen him since "Douluo Continent", and the growth is obvious—he carries Zhang Hai’s contradictions with a grounded intensity that makes even the dumbest plot turns feel momentarily plausible. Zhang Jing Yi, fresh in my mind from "Blossoms in Adversity", plays a more subdued character here, and she calibrates accordingly. She doesn’t command the narrative the way she did in her previous drama, but she anchors her scenes with a quiet steadiness that works for the role she’s given.
As for the villain—he’s one of those antagonists who doesn’t read as a villain at all, which is either brilliant casting or a narrative accident. Like the morally righteous antagonist in "Legend of Zhuohua", he believes in his own virtue so completely that you almost want to believe him too. It’s unsettling, but in a way that adds texture rather than confusion.
The plot? Equal parts gripping and contrived. I guessed the benefactor and the big villain early, but the show still managed to make the reveal satisfying. Predictable doesn’t mean boring when the execution keeps you leaning forward. And yes, some deaths feel unnecessary, some sacrifices feel misallocated, and some characters deserved better—but the emotional stakes stayed high enough that I cared, even when I disagreed.
In the end, The Legend of Zhang Hai is the kind of drama that frustrates you, fascinates you, and refuses to let you disengage. It’s flawed, absolutely. But it’s alive. And for the first time in a long while, I found myself excited—genuinely excited—to keep watching.

A Chess Game Played in Blood!
"Legend of Zang Hai" is a masterfully crafted labyrinth of vengeance. It replaces the chaotic horror of fantasy witha calculated ascent from the shadows into the suffocating precision of court politics.. Watching this series feels like walking on a blade’s edge; one moment you are mesmerized by the sheer elegance of the protagonist's mind, and the next, you are frozen by the cruelty of his reality. It captures a world where a smile is more dangerous than a sword. The scarce glimpses of genuine connection are deeply touching, yet they stand powerless against the relentless, devouring tide of ambition and betrayal.Acting/ Cast
The main leads, portrayed by Xiao Zhan and Zhang Jingyi, deliver performances that are a masterclass in silence and very convincing.
Xiao Zhan (Zang Hai) We see a man shaped by trauma, embodying the notion that to defeat a monster, one must become a shadow. What truly sets this performance apart is his voice. It adds a completely different flavor to the character—a haunting gravitas. Through his delivery, low and steady yet dripping with suppressed rage, he perfectly conveys the suffocating weight of loss and the burning, cold fire of a lifelong grudge.
The drama excels in portraying the early enemies—characters of pure, unhinged madness whose insanity made you shiver with genuine fear. However, the final antagonist pales in comparison. After facing such "monsters," the ultimate reveal felt lightweight and lacked the menacing aura of the earlier threats.
Moreover, while the leads were perfect, some casting choices defied logic. Zhou Qi simply lacked the grit and weight required for a commander. His appearance was too soft and youthful to lead an army, making his unearned authority feel comical rather than commanding.
Story
The story begins with a brutal purge, setting the stage for a meticulous game of revenge. "Legend of Zang Hai" stands out as one of the most intricate historical dramas, offering a richly textured narrative of strategy and intrigue.
However, the conclusion leaves a bitter aftertaste. It wasn't that the ending was rushed, but rather poorly executed. By trying so hard to hide the final villain to create a twist, the writers neglected to give them a believable buildup. Furthermore, the final act suffers from "Death for the sake of Death." Some characters seemed to meet their end not because the plot required it, but simply to force a tragic atmosphere. These deaths felt unnecessary and hollow, stripping the finale of the emotional impact it should have had.
Conclusion
This drama is a profound and intense viewing experience. Its complex themes and slow-burn tension will captivate you, especially the mesmerizing vocal performance of the lead. However, be prepared for a resolution that doesn’t quite match the brilliance of the start.
If you are ready for a journey that challenges your mind—even if the destination is slightly disappointing—"Legend of Zang Hai" is a ride worth taking.

This drama really hook me up
This drama captivated me from the beginning, even though it's only 8 episodes, I can definitely say that this is Xiao Zhan's best drama, the plot is absolutely perfect. The anti-hero character as the main character, totally my cup of tea, Xiao Zhan's acting is excellent in this drama, and Zhang Jingyi is very beautiful. I've been thinking about this drama all day, what will happen next, this is so crazy.
