Enemies to lovers! Best drama in this trope for 2025 so far
Enemies to lovers genre is my favourite, this is how I stumbled upon this best new drama 2025. The moment I watched the first episode I was hooked and binged watched till 20th episode.I'm enthralled by this drama's undeniable captivating, engaging and intriguing story line. I'm thoroughly impressed by main actors' flawless and impeccable acting. I have always loved SZE's dramas, but in this drama my respect for her has sky rocketed. She has portrayed her character perfectly. Furthermore, I have watched some amazing dramas of LYN, but in this drama his acting has gotten better phenomenally. It's like this role was especially made for him. I adore their love and hate relationship.
I'm particularly impressed that the fl, QM is not at all a beauty in distress but instead an incredibly smart, wise, quick witted, sharp tongued, courageous, refined, elegant, poised and well educated diplomat who knows how to wade smoothly through political and personal trials and challenges while always keeping the safety, happiness and prosperity of the general people at the top of her priorities. She is prudent and resourceful, only plots and plans when required to protect her husband, family or country and for the people she cares about but knows when to give way and listen to advice. I'm surprised at her resilience even when she is treated unfairly she thinks logically not always emotionally to counter the challenges. She never takes any injustice lying down even when in disadvantageous position. Putting political life aside, she never slacks off in her duties to her family, her husband and her in laws. When realising where her heart lies, she is not afraid to wear it on her sleeves and even bravely pursue a person who she knows is wary of her for fair reasons and reluctant to accept her heart.
The ml is playing his role incredibly well too. WS is undefeated charming hero with years of expertise, wisdom and knowledge of how to run a country and conquer territories. He is smart, clever, brave, patriarchal, responsible leader and has flail piety yet he lacks emotional intelligence and deeper understanding of people's heart. He is plagued by revenge and blood thirst is embedded in him due to events that took in past. However, he is principled enough to learn to become more open minded, forgiving and soft hearted. He tries to learn to let go of grudges for greater good's sake and for his grand mother's sake. He wins every territory with his smart wits and courage but in contrast its super cute when he is unable to win against his wife's arguments, antics and runs away everytime. Its very satisfying how this tsundere man starts off completely rejecting her and insulting her due to his grudges and prejudice against the fl and her clan but slowly he sees and acknowledges all the great things about her. He learns to acknowledge her righteous heart and meticulous care for him and starts to give her benefit of a doubt in most perilous situations caused by outsiders or insiders intentionally or unintentionally. Understandably, he struggled to accept her heart and admit his own due to many personal and political reasons. His originally cold and hard heart melted in to warm, benevolent and magnanimous one influenced by fl who always flows like water.
The story is working very closely around "enemies to lovers" genre, both main leads were antagonistic initially due to significant conflicts imposed on them from past generations' problems and then developed a romantic relationship as they navigated their differences, insecurities and misconceptions. They found their shared goal, sometimes they were forced to cooperate with each other which led them to interact with each other then form trust and as they interacted, eventually they learned to overcome internal and external obstacles, which in turn led them to form deeper emotional connections and romantic feelings. I particularly love this trope because its known for its tension and attraction, we can see that the ml and fl are constantly battling their feelings and the external pressures against their relationship.
Unique to this story, every time the couple faced challenge/misunderstandings/unexpected trials they grew closer. Fortunately, both main leads had the decency to reflect on their mistakes, apologize wholeheartedly and mend their old ways to become a devoted, honest and sincere couple. Through arduous journey together, both learned that they have to act as one, be transparent to each other and be each others' confidant and protector to defeat the odds.
Side characters are doing excellent work in performing their roles to the highest of standards. They are very dynamic and have smooth chemistry with each other and the main characters. My personal favourites are the generals and the advisor. Its incredibly hilarious how ml casually decides to visit advisor's wife whenever he is trying to avoid his wife. Then comes the WLx XT couple who played vital part in bringing the main couple together. They are very cute and funny, there is never a dull moment with them around. WY's character development is beautifully executed, his character is very intriguing and amusing too. He starts off with very bad reputation and scheming behaviour and makes many mistakes. However, unlike the villains who arrogantly continued making wicked and selfish decisions, WY turned the tide by having remorse, correcting himself, valuing his family's love, sincerity and care for him then returning it ten fold with his talent, loyalty, courageous and selfless acts.
Overall I'm absolutely in love with this master piece. The OSTs, cinematography, settings and historical clothes are magnificent. I highly recommend this drama, every second of it is worth the watch. It has become one of my all time favourite dramas. I'm glad the main leads have got the ending they hard-earned. ☆*: .。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆

Love & Hate. Trust & Betrayal. A hopeless romantic drama with a dash of politics.
The core of this drama is the love story between the leads, with a bit of a mix of Beauty and the Beast + Romeo and Juliet vibes. The drama is about the female lead, who is sent to form a marriage alliance with the male lead’s family, in order to stop the feud between them. However, the male lead, a General and Lord of his clan, is reluctant to accept her, as he still harbours resentment towards her family. From distrust and hate, the leads slowly build trust and fall in love, while working together towards their common goal - to help their people live a peaceful life. The best thing about this drama is that it made me FEEL. The characters were written so well, they all felt like real people. I laughed with them, I cried with them and worried for them. The angst hit hard, the romance was sweetness overload and the emotional moments landed at the perfect timing. It is indeed rare to find a drama that pulls you in so deeply, that you connect with so much emotionally, and this one totally did.
POSITIVE:
- Smart & strong female lead. She used her brain to fight war and I loved it.
- Red to green flag male lead. He was a layered character. Started off as a red flag and kind of a jerk towards everyone. But knowing what he has experienced, it all made sense. Falling for his wife softened him - towards her and his people. But at the same time, as a Lord and General, he was still badass, smart, firm and masculine.
- Rom-com vibes. Unexpectedly, the middle of the drama was non-stop laughter and cute romantic scenes. I’m usually all for angst but I absolutely loved this part as it truly built up the characters and love story.
- Comedy was gold. There were so many ridiculously funny and very entertaining scenes that made me smile all day. It’s been a long time since a drama made me laugh this much.
- Emotional rollercoaster. The heartwarming romance made me smile all day, while the heartbreaking moments made me cry buckets of tears.
- Slow burn romance that burned HARD. The romantic tension between the leads was the driving force of this drama and their enemies to lovers arc was brilliantly written.
- Hot kisses. Only 2-3 scenes but they totally broke the scale in terms of heat.
- Support cast was great. I’m looking at the four generals, especially dear Wei Liang, who was the heart of this drama and made me giggle like crazy.
- Villains. What I liked about this drama is that all villains felt human. Their actions made sense, their evil deeds made sense. In fact, if the script was flipped at the start, I could see some of them being the heroes. The villains weren’t villains for the sake of it but because their life circumstances and past pain had shaped them to be this way.
- Cinematography, OST, costumes - everything was done really well.
NEGATIVE:
There were little bits that bugged me. I wasn’t a fan of the second male lead but I did grow fond of him later. The political and war side towards the end felt a bit rushed. I wouldn’t have minded if the drama had 2 more episodes to extend the story. I’m guessing they didn’t have that much budget for a huge war scene in the finale episode, but the villain just standing there doing nothing was kind of lame. But still, none of these things were a huge overkill because the core of the drama was always romance, not politics or war.
OVERALL:
This is one of the best 2025 cdramas for me. It has everything, from well developed characters, brilliantly crafted romance, to a perfect blend of suspense, tragedy, angst and comedy. If you are here for logic, politics and war, you will most likely be disappointed. But if you want a brilliantly crafted love story, packed with a rollercoaster of emotions and an adorable support cast of generals, PLUS you are a hopeless romantic at heart, I highly, highly, highly recommend this drama.
FAVOURITE QUOTE:
“You see me as a jewel but you treat all others as ants” by the female lead
“If I succeed, it is my fortune. If I fail it is my fate. Even if I die, I’ll have no regrets.” by the villain

Bow down for love.
I finally finished it. I ended up taking a lot of time pausing and trying to make this drama last longer. I was reluctant to say goodbye.Song Zuer captivates with a natural charm that blends playfulness, wit, and vibrant energy. Xiao Qiao, in contrast, embodies quiet strength and intelligence. She faces adversity with deliberate care and unwavering courage, always thinking ahead. Her deep understanding of Wei Shao guides her every move, and she stands by his side as an equal—never idle, never reckless.
Rather than allowing him to face danger alone, she shares the burden, fiercely protecting him, herself, and those she loves. She gently challenges him to see the Qiaos in a different light—an idea he struggles to accept at first. Yet she holds no resentment. Aware of the wounds he carries, she responds with patience and empathy, slowly helping him release the past and find peace—to truly bury the hatchet.
Liu Yuning’s Wei Shao commands attention without a word—his presence alone shifts the air. With sharp features and a cool, unreadable expression, he doesn’t chase the spotlight; he is the spotlight. He’s not the man you run to, but the one you instinctively follow—back straight, breath held. Yet beneath the warlord’s cold exterior lies a flicker of warmth. When he breaks down before Xiao Qiao, the depth of his love, pride, and pain bleeds through every glance.
Liu Yuning delivers a performance both fierce and tender, capturing a rare duality—dominant yet vulnerable, righteous yet enigmatic. His understated intensity, commanding voice, and raw martial edge give him a wolf-like energy that’s magnetic and nearly impossible to imitate.
These two demeanors create this electric “wolf and fox” dynamic. Both characters are written to extremes, and these two actors push those extremes in a way that makes their chemistry almost untouchable. Their on-screen connection feels fated.
The Wei brothers were an absolute delight to watch, each bringing unique personalities that lit up every scene. They truly embodied the Wei clan’s reputation for strength and spirit.
At first, I wasn’t particularly fond of Wei Yan, but over time, he grew on me. His personal journey—coming to terms with his past and striving to become better—added depth to his character. He played a key role in strengthening the bond between the wolf and the fox, acting as a catalyst for their relationship. Over time, he proved himself to be a sharp-witted companion and a dependable ally during the final conflict. I gained a newfound respect for him; he’s undeniably flawed, but he owns those flaws and integrates them into who he is.
Of course, can’t leave out Wei Liang and Xiao Tao, who were an absolutely charming pair. Their relationship started off with playful bickering, which quickly became their unique love language. As the story progressed, that lighthearted banter blossomed into one of the most heartwarming romances in the entire drama.
What made their dynamic so endearing was how effortlessly they matched each other's energy. By the end, they had become a couple you couldn’t help but root for—sweet, sincere, and impossible not to smile at.
The women of the Wei family—Wei Shao’s mother and grandmother—were standouts during the final conflict. Both displayed remarkable strength and resilience. While Wei Shao’s mother initially clashed with the main couple, she eventually transformed into one of their strongest allies. She is not an amazing character, but she changed for the better.
In contrast, his grandmother was a steady force from the beginning. She was the voice of reason and the key figure without whom the relationship might never have been possible. Wise and composed, she never boasted about her insights, yet she approached every serious matter with gravity. Most importantly, she supported Xiao Qiao from the very start, despite her ties to the rival clan.
I found the power struggle within the Qiao family interesting, particularly between the leader and Xiao Qiao's father, who was one of my favorite characters. He reminded me in some ways of Wei Shao's grandmother.
Da Qiao and Bi Zhi’s story is parallel to that of Xiao Qiao and Wei Shao. I really enjoyed their dynamic, although some of Bi Zhi’s choices sometimes felt off to me. Da Qiao was almost always supportive of him. While Bi Zhi might have become a general, deep down he was just trying to give the woman he loved a peaceful life. They were also one of the couples that demonstrated the most mutual understanding and care for each other.
As for the villains, they were strong but came off as a little too easy to win against at times.
The story’s pacing is sharp and well-balanced, with both narrative arcs—political drama and romance—equally engaging and never overshadowing one another.
The plot unfolds in the aftermath of a devastating betrayal between two once-allied clans. Wei Shao, who witnessed the tragic loss of his loved ones at a young age, harbors deep hatred toward the Qiao clan. However, fate takes an unexpected turn when he finds himself falling for Xiao Qiao, a member of the Qiao family. She enters the Wei clan through a political marriage intended to halt an impending revenge plot and initiate peace talks.
The heart of the story lies in their romance. What begins as mutual hostility and manipulation gradually transforms into a deep bond rooted in trust and empathy. Their growing connection becomes a challenge for the main antagonists, as Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao develop an unwavering understanding of each other. Remarkably, they never blame one another for the actions of their families. Wei Shao is able to see Xiao Qiao as an individual, separate from the clan he despises, choosing not to project his anger onto her. In turn, Xiao Qiao respects his role as a leader and forgives the difficult decisions he must make under the weight of his responsibilities.
The romance in this story blossoms at a gentle, unhurried pace, skillfully weaving together light-hearted humor, tender exchanges, and a powerful, slow-burning chemistry that draws you in. It’s not a tale driven by a consistent trope of a relentlessly toxic or overbearing male lead. If you’re looking for a drama built around emotional manipulation or cold indifference disguised as passion, this is not it.
At its heart, it is Wei Shao’s deeply personal and emotional journey. He begins as a proud, battle-hardened leader, defined by his authority, sharp instincts, and the weight of past grievances. But as the story unfolds, we witness the transformation of a man long guarded by resentment and power. Slowly, he begins to dismantle the emotional walls he has spent years building.
This isn’t just a love story—it’s a quiet surrender. Wei Shao doesn’t simply fall in love; he bows to it. Not in defeat, but in reverence. He lays down the armor forged from pain and pride and kneels at the altar of love—not out of weakness, but out of strength and trust. In Xiao Qiao, he finds not just a partner but a safe haven, someone worthy of seeing his vulnerability. And in doing so, he chooses tenderness over vengeance, devotion over pride. His submission to love becomes the most courageous act of all.
Now, about the visuals—I absolutely loved the artistic direction they took with the drama. The color palette and gradients used in the sets and costumes, especially the wedding attire, were stunning. The title card shots for each state were also beautifully done, showing just how much attention to detail went into maintaining visual consistency throughout. It was a visually captivating experience with fantastic cinematography. While there weren't many large battle scenes, that didn’t matter much, as they were never the central focus of the story.
I also really enjoyed the background music during the emotional scenes—it added a lot of depth. The opening theme, sung by Liu Yuning, was excellent, and overall, the entire soundtrack was well-chosen and perfectly fitting.
Overall, this was one of the most put-together and well-written dramas of this year so far. I know it has its flaws, but it is a story I enjoyed, with moments that vary from touching to laughter-inducing. It's a drama that I could easily see myself rewatching in the future.
"Dripping water wears through stone; with a beauty by my side, sorrow and hatred dissolve.
With gentle affection and tender grace, even a noble man bends his will for true love."

"The Prisoner of Beauty" is my Roman Empire!"
The Prisoner of Beauty" is my Roman Empire! I thought "Eternal Love" was my most rewatched C-drama (9 times and counting) & then "My Journey to you" & "General's Lady (6 times each), but nope… "Prisoner of Beauty" said, “Hold my fan.” This one snatched the crown, burned the palace, and declared itself emperor of my "Imma watching it till i learn by heart even the ending credits" list!I'm already on my 4th rewatch in less than 15 days and still fully unhinged. At this point, the play button is filing a restraining order.
The couple’s chemistry? It’s chemistrying harder than Marie Curie in a radioactive lab with no gloves. 🧪 Someone call the drama hazmat team — I’m melting. Their dynamic is enemies-to-lovers-to-obsession-to-I’d-burn-the-empire-for-you. Their eye contact alone has more tension than the entire Ming dynasty!
Song Zu Er as The female lead? STUNNING. She was smart, strong, graceful, and gave regal savage energy. She matched his fire beat for beat — no wallflower, no pushover, just pure elegance with a blade behind her smile.
Together, they were a power couple for the ages — like Mr. & Mrs. Smith if it were set in a palace with revenge plots, stolen glances, and OSTs that end lives.
And Liu Yuning as the male lead??
PLEASE. He didn’t just raise the bar — he burned it, buried it under dramatic OSTs, and then whispered devastating lines in that deep voice while it rained on my standards’ funeral. 😭
He’s 6'3" of brooding stares, lethal elegance, and poetry in motion. His acting? Criminally underrated. His voice? Illegal in at least 7 provinces. His presence? Main character energy so intense, it bends gravity. Every scene he’s in feels like a historical thirst trap wrapped in silk and trauma!
And listen — I don’t know who keeps calling this tall, tragic, sharp-jawed king “ugly,” but I hope your pillow is always warm, your rice undercooked, your earphones tangled, your stream stuck at 99%, and your fave drama ends on a cliffhanger that never resolves!
Not everyone needs to look like a cookie-cutter, AI-generated, flower-boy idol with 17 filters. By international standards, he’s a fine, handsome man — tall, expressive, with charisma that eats the camera alive. And the voice? That’s not just a voice. That’s a weapon of mass seduction. He’s got that "You’ll think about me even in your next life" energy. If that’s “ugly,” then I don’t want “pretty.” I want epic. Tragic. Dangerous.
If anyone calls him “ugly” again, I will Liam Neeson them — I have a very particular set of skills. 😤
I will find you. And I will educate you. With a playlist. And screenshots. And 30-minute character arcs broken down with timestamps.
Now go sit in the corner and think about your life while I rewatch The Prisoner of Beauty for the 5th time and cry into my fan.
If Eternal Love was my comfort drama over the years… then Prisoner of Beauty is my emotional support fever dream.
I’m not watching anymore — I’m studying. Writing a thesis. Citing sources. Defending a dissertation in front of a panel of palace eunuchs while Liu Yuning sings in the background and I spiral! ♥

Best dramas I’ve seen in a long time
This drama is one of those rare gems that completely pulls you in from the very first episode and doesn’t let go. I genuinely loved everything about it: the plot, the pacing, the emotional tension, and especially the two leads. This is the kind of drama that makes you fall in love with storytelling all over again. There's no filler, no unnecessary scenes, no dragging episodes. Every moment has weight, and everything ties together in the most satisfying way. The story flows beautifully from start to finish, and I never once felt bored or confused. It’s full of heart, intrigue, and just the right amount of drama. You know how sometimes dramas throw in misunderstandings just to stretch the conflict? This doesn't do that. When misunderstandings happen, they’re handled thoughtfully and resolved in such sweet, believable ways. It makes the emotional payoff so much more real.
And let’s talk about character development—because wow. The growth of both leads is written with such care. You get to see them struggle, reflect, change, and become better versions of themselves, all without losing who they truly are. Their relationship evolves slowly but naturally, and it’s so satisfying to watch. It never feels forced or rushed, just perfectly timed and deeply emotional.
For the acting, I honestly don’t even know where to begin because everyone delivered. But let me scream about Liu Yuning and Song Zuer for a second—they were phenomenal. I mean it. Their chemistry is unreal. You feel everything between them—the tension, the longing, the heartbreak, the quiet affection. Liu Yuning brought such depth and quiet strength to his character, and Song Zuer balanced it out with vulnerability, charm, and fierce determination. I really, really hope they get cast together again, maybe even in a film. They’ve got that once-in-a-generation dynamic.
Another thing I loved: the aesthetic of the drama. The cinematography was gorgeous, the soundtrack was perfectly matched, and everything felt polished without being overdone.
This is easily one of the best dramas I’ve seen in a long time—and one I’ll absolutely rewatch.

This is how you do the perfect enemies to lover trope
I waited for this for more than a year, and finally we get this drama, and it didn't disappoint. This is just an almost perfect story of the enemies-to-lovers trope, and they nailed it. As a huge admirer of LYN, I feel immense pride in him once more, as he flawlessly embodied his role. ZZR also did an impressive job, and she was beautiful, and I applaud her acting here. They both perfectly delivered their characters, so I almost cry at how outstanding it is.
The other characters also needs to be applauded. It's like Journey to Love Again, where you love all the side characters.
I think we all agreed that this has the best intimate relationship ever. This demonstrates the physical affection between a husband and wife who love each other. It's not awkward or displeasing to the eyes. It's just two people who wanted to be in each other's arms. Love love this.
Overall, this is a wonderful show. It's fun, touching, romantic... it has everything.
This will be my favorite drama this year.

Drama top tier enemy to lovers trope❤️✨
The important thing for a drama, especially if it is about enemies to lovers, is a ✨C H E M I S T R Y✨. So I was looking forward about relationship between Wei Shao and Xiao Qiao aka Liu Yuning and Song Zuer when I first watched. And. I Am. Not. Disappointed. When Weishao opened the curtain to see Manman, it was...damn. The Shot, the eyes, the expression. Time becomes to stop. The chemistry was there. And as the episodes went by, it exploded🔥🔥🔥 This drama perfectly captures the essence of the enemy to lovers trope in a heartfelt and emotional way. What truly won me over was how Wei Shao slowly opened his heart. From someone who seemed to despise Xiao Qiao, he transformed into someone who loved her with all his heart. His emotional transition felt deep and sincere. Every moment between them carried meaning, and their on-screen chemistry was incredibly strong.
Aside from the powerful chemistry, the drama is also supported by great story, beautiful cinematography, full of plans dialogue, and an outstanding presence from the cast. It all comes together into a love story that’s not just romantic, but deeply touching.
If you’re a fan of intense love stories filled with emotional tension and a satisfying conclusion, Prisoner of Beauty is a must-watch. Personally, I give it a perfect 10 out of 10!

Utterly brilliant from start to finish
Wow!From start to finish this is a brilliant drama. The main characters have so much chemistry (even when she does want to stab him in the eye with a chopstick) and their support teams are fabulous with plenty of amusing moments to further elevate this story. Fabulous costumes, fight scenes and attention to detail round off this production.
Not gonna lie, there is plenty of blood and drama with believable bad guys and the odd death thrown in..
Had me hooked very quickly and binge watched the whole thing as I just couldn’t put it down.
Will definitely watch this again.

The best historical Cdramas so far for me
If you want a show with the perfect balance between romance, soft comedy and political plot : you should totally go for it.I've seen some people talk about the romance of The Prisoner of Beauty, but I feel like the political plot is really underrated by most people. I'm really hard to please in historical dramas because I love politic plots but I also need very-well written characters and relationships (not necessarily romance, but romantic relationships are the most common). Most historical dramas I've watched always had the same problems to me : either they had an interesting romance but not enough politics, or there were enough politics, but the romance and/or characters were not well written.
Well, let me tell you : the prisoner of beauty is the exception! I found it was very, very well balanced. I saw some people saying it was more romance than politics but I found the politic plot almost always there. The power struggles between the families, and even the "enemy bond" the Qiao and Wei have is politic. Every plot around the canals in the cities is political. There were some parts more romance-focused and some more family-centered, but I wouldn't say the drama was mostly romance. I felt like it was the perfect 50-50 between politicals struggles, and romance/familial struggles.
I absolutely loved Wei Shao's and Xiao Qiao's bond. How they distrust each other at first, and Xiao Qiao manipulates him, how he separates her from the other Qiaos from the start, how he protects her in front of his family but does not trust her at all, into how they slowly discover what is hidden between each other's mask and struggle between their feelings and their filial duties. The chemistry was amazing, and some dialogues struck me as peak enemies-to-lovers dialogues. One, specifically : when Xiao Qiao is accused of cooking the grains to fool the people, and Wei Shao defend her by saying "I would trust you if you told me she tried to poison my whole family, but I would never trust you if you told me she tried to harm the people." This was such a powerful dialogue to me; he was willing to defend a woman he thought capable of killing his family.
However, what I loved more than anything else was the flawless characters' writing. I am a sucker for complex and coherent characters, and I definitely did not expect this drama to serve this. Romance dramas, and especially enemies-to-lovers one, tend to give big character developpments to their character, sometimes too big to be realistic. By that, I mean cold and cruel characters becoming too kind and soft; or characters changing too much or too suddenly just to serve a plot device. Which is okay, as long as it's enjoyable.
But this drama does not do that. Like, ever. Every character's writing is so deep and coherent I was surprised.
I am going to start with the most obvious one : Wei Shao. He doesn't have that switch male leads often have in romance dramas, from "cruel and cold" to "silly and lovestruck". He keeps the same qualities and defaults from the beggining to the end, but some are developed while some are tamed. His hatred is slowly tamed, and his kindness, noticeable since the beggining with how he did not want Xiao Qiao to struggle too much in his family even when he disliked her and didn't trust her, takes more and more place and makes him warmer. But those traits did not appear suddenly, they were there since the beggining. Wei Shao has always cared most about the people, and he stays this way until the end. Even when he has to chose between defending Panyin or Yunjun, he stays loyal to his values. He choses to defend the people instead of his family. That is a very coherent and well-written decision, especially when you notice the parallel between Xiao Qiao's grandfather who had to go through the same dilemma. Having to chose between his family and the people made him understood why the Qiao betrayed his family 15 years ago. That was a beautiful way to end this arc.
Liu Yan and Yu Lou are very good exemple of how coherent and deep the writing was. If you think about it, they repeat the same errors again and again until it kills them, and I find that to be a very realistic writing. As Wei Shao told her, Yu Lou fails to notice other people's love for her right until the end. Even when she is warned about it, she doesn't notice and change, because humans don't change that easily. Liu Yan, on the other hand, only knows how to be obsessive. His "love" for Xiao Qiao was an obsession, and that almost killed him in the beggining. Did he learn his lesson? No, he reproduced the same kind of obsession for Yu Lou and died because of that in the end. I found his character development very interesting because I did not expect him to become the biggest villain of the show. Him killing his parents and little brother shocked me to the core, but then, when you think about it : that, too, was there since the beggining. As Xiao Qiao told him in the beggining : I know you treat me as a jewel, but the problem is you don't care about other people. And that's how he acts for the whole drama. He's blinded by what he wants (first Xiao Qiao, then power, then Yu Lou), and never cares about anyone or anything else. His unability to change is what kills him in the end.
Wei Yan's writing also surprised me. I thought I would despise him; he turned out to be the most lovable character of the show (to me). While he is described as a shameless man, he actually respects boundaries. He has never tried anything toward Xiao Qiao, and is even willing to leave his grandmother just to not bring shame to his cousin and cousin-in-law. Watching him yearning for a home and family and recognition was so interesting. He could have made the "wrong" choices so many times but never did. I saw people say that his love for Xiao Qiao was some misplaced lust; I disagree on that. I think he said it himself to her when he's suspected to have an affair with the Yu girl. While his grandmother and Wei Shao suspected him to have done something wrong but were still willing to protect him, she was the first to not assume he did something wrong. Which was new for him. He said it later to Wei Shao : he doesn't want his family to forgive him for his wrongdoings, and he resented them for that. Instead of doing that, Xiao Qiao has always assumed the best of him and tried to prove he was not guilty. I understand why he would fall for her after that.
Xiao Qiao's writing was also very coherent, though I don't have much to say about it because I feel like the show has said enough. This quote sums it up : "Water only flaws gently when the path is smooth. Block it with wind or earth, and all you'll do is stir up towering waves". One thing I loved is how her pretending to be all-weak-and-gentle at the beggining while scheming for her family in secret actually blew up against her in the end. She had to apologize for that and I think that was fair. Wei Shao was not perfect but he, at least, never tried to deceive her. She had no choice but to do so, but she could've come clean later and still didn't. I liked that the writers didn't brush it off easily.
I could go on and on about each character, because every single one of them was written with care. Qiao Fan and Bi Zhi, for exemple, are also very coherent in their decisions and actions. Wei Shao's mother, too; she changes, but stays a quite selfish character till the end (the only reason she didn't flee Yunjun at the end is because she wanted to be appreciated by Lady Xu).
At the end of the day, I feel like a drama that stays true to their characters writing all along and ends its plot with a beautiful parallel (Wei Shao having to choose between people dear to him and the people, like the Qiaos 15 years before) deserves a 10/10. I know it's very different from the novel, but I feel like every change only made the drama better.

The prisoner of beauty - explosive chemistry and the best love story
Moony💕✨Yet another drama in my plan to watch lists that I wasn't anticipating at all. I added this drama solely for fun without being aware of the plot. Later Liu Yuning's drama TSOPG aired and I really enjoyed his acting there. This was the main reason I gave The prisoner of beauty a try and didn't regret it at all. It was way beyond my expectations.
The story starts with the alliance between the Qiao and Wei clan that turned into hatred. To get revenge for the old grudges, the ruler of the Wei clan - Wei Shao decides to take down the Qiao family. Helpless, Qiaos seek peace through a marriage alliance. Can this marriage resolve the 14 years of hatred and bring a lasting peace?
When I first started the drama, I had no high expectations but, from the first episodes, I already knew it was a promising one. The story follows a love story more than a political story which made it way easier for me to follow with the storyline. The story includes tropes like enemies to lovers and arranged marriage. I enjoy both of these tropes so you can already guess that I was hooked. The tension and chemistry between the lead couple was insane. From their first meeting, you could see that spark- the chemistry! But, it’s not solely romance, it’s also the characters and the plot that moved me. This drama avoids common clichés and misunderstandings that often can be seen in other dramas with similar plotline. Characters are intelligent, calculative, emotionally strong and also receive massive character development.
I want to start off the base of review from the development of romance. As I latterly said, I like the fact that it’s more about a love story because, besides being easy to catch up with the plot, I think it made a strong base for the drama as well. At first, the couple didn’t trust each other. They had hidden motives and were very calculative towards each other. In my opinion, following with how they developed trust and started believing each other eliminated future threats. You could see a clear, step- by-step growths in their relationship. As they got closer, they started understanding each other more and more which helped them to overcome any misunderstandings.
The first contributor of the relationship was Qiao Man. She is a pretty smart and lovable character. Even though she was spoiled on her own home, she endured all the hardships for her family and country. Manman is a really caring person and a true beauty! She is patient and is really thoughtful. This is the reason why Wei Shao loves her so much and is willing to open his heart and show his vulnerable moments only to her. Even though Wei Shao is hard to understand, Manman didn’t walk away and changed him a lot. As a wife, she is thoughtful about her husband, but, as a woman, she had to the fate of two clans in her hands. She is brave, even with little troops, she supported him during the war by chasing the enemy away.
Wei Shao on the other hand is cold on the outside and kind on the inside type of character. Once he starts to care about someone, he fully accepts and protects them at all costs. He is not good with words but tries his best to express it through actions. His love language is acts of service for sure. Because of Manman, he started opening up and improved his relationship with his mother. His character arc was also really noticeable. His target was to obtain Yanzhou and start a war which could have harmed the lives of innocent people. After the change, he was willing to get rid of past grudges and seek peace.
I also want to mention our shippers also known as cupids. They added so much fun to the drama. I always enjoyed the scenes with them. Especially, when they give advice to Wei Shao about how to communicate with his wife. Those scenes never made me fail to laugh. They added a hint of comedy and laughter to the drama
Villains like Lady Yu lou and Liu Yan were pretty relatable characters. Both have suffered a lot growing up. One was only special because of a fake birthmark on the forehead and the other one was solely an option to be crowned but never the choice. As much as I pity them, I can't forgive their evildoings. Having struggled in life doesn't mean you need to do foolish and brutal things. Lady Yu Lou has always wanted to be loved but in her mind she wasn't. She was loved and cared for all the time but it was herself who caused the death of the people who cared for her. When she realized it all, it was too late.
The ending, in my opinion was really satisfactory. Unfortunately, we lost our favorite character - Wei Liang on the way. Despite that, I was happy that they were still spiritually together. Our main couple got the sweetest ending possible. The special moments they had with their daughter, Feifei melt my heart because of how adorable they were. At the last minute of the drama I loved what Manman said "He is willing to be my prisoner and I'm willing to be his". It showed that after so much they went through they became closer and stayed truthful and loyal to one another. Most importantly, people of the Central plains were finally in peace, no more wars or famine. It was such a beautiful journey that will never be forgotten!!
Finally, I want to talk about the acting and cinematography in this drama. I have previously watched one of the recent dramas of Song Zuer. I was once again impressed by her acting. You could read the emotions from her eyes. This was the same for Liu Yu Ning. Perhaps, this is the reason why they had so much chemistry together.
The scenes were taken from really good angles making it a really pleasing experience. The editing was not the best but it didn't ruin the drama for me. I was obsessed with the song in the intro, so I made sure to not skip it and enjoy the masterpiece. Overall, this drama was driven by a quite nice plot, acting and music. It's infinite out of ten for me. Sadly, I'll have to say goodbye to this drama and end this review here...

Silk Robes & Side-Eyes: A Sweet Escape with “Prisoner of Beauty”
Watching Prisoner of Beauty felt like getting wrapped in a velvet blanket while two ridiculously good-looking people argued like an old married couple. 😂Song Zu’er? Total gem 💎—graceful, sharp, and that face could lead armies or end wars. The way she glares at Liu Yuning every time he roasts the poor Scholar? Comedy gold 🤣. Her expressions deserve their own drama: fiery when mad 😤, cool when scheming 🧠, soft when in love 💕, and adorably guilty when apologising 🥺. It’s like an emoji keyboard came to life—with actual acting skills. Unlike most cookie-cutter FLs, she brings layers, not just eyeliner. Queen behavior. 👑
Liu Yuning—ugh yes please! 😍 The man is walking eye candy with a dash of brooding mystery and unexpected softness. That towering presence, those intense gazes, and his deep voice? Instant heart flutter 🫠. Plus, his fashion and armor game? On point. Whether he’s in battle robes or sulking in a corner, he serves main character energy with a side of “I’ll protect you but won’t talk about my feelings” charm 🖤🗡️. Love his style, love his vibe—10/10 would stare respectfully (and maybe a little disrespectfully) every episode. 😏🔥 He comes in all broody and battle-ready 🗡️, but surprise! He’s got deadpan sass and “emotionally constipated but trying” energy that grows on you like a reluctant houseplant. 🌱 Their chemistry? It’s giving enemies-to-lovers with a side of slow-burn eye contact and unspoken feelings longer than ancient scrolls 📜.
And here’s the best part—no unnecessary breakups, no stupid misunderstandings! 🙌 Yes, they bicker (and thank goodness, because the banter is gold), but they hash it out like mature, emotionally literate grownups. What a concept! 😂 It’s so refreshing to see leads who argue with logic, then move on with their lives together. Love them for it!
The four Wei generals and the advisor? Absolute comedy squad 🤣. Every time they showed up, it was like a mini sitcom in ancient robes. Whether they were panicking, plotting, or just being lovable idiots, they had me cackling 😂. And the advisor? The one brain cell holding them together—barely. It felt like watching a group project where only one guy read the instructions 🧠📜. Their loyalty was top-tier, but their chaos? Unmatched. I’d watch a spin-off of just them arguing over who gets the last dumpling 🥟.
The only tearjerker? Sweet, chubby General Wei Liang 😭💔. That man was a cinnamon roll in armor. His loyalty, his adorable crush, his pure friendship with the leads… I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. And his love story? Utterly precious and hilarious—like watching a puppy try to flirt 🐶💘.
The OST is like background fairy dust—gentle piano, wistful strings, and perfectly timed romantic tunes when someone almost says "I like you" but ends up staring instead 😳. And the cinematography? Stunning. Golden sunlight, flowing robes, petals flying like someone paid extra for wind effects 🍃. Every frame could hang in a museum, honestly.
Plot-wise, it’s not here to hurt you or melt your brain. No power-hungry schemes with a hundred backstabs—just heartfelt growth, palace whispers, clever plotting, and romantic tension so thick it could be sliced with a decorative hairpin. 🥢
Verdict? 10/10 for comfort, chemistry, visual snacks, and healthy communication. A drama that made my heart full, eyes happy, and left me whispering “just one more episode” at 2am like a liar. 😅📺💖

A Smart, Slow-Burn Romance That Warms the Heart
A delightful enemies-to-lovers gem with all the right tropes done right. The female lead is sharp, strategic, and absolutely lovable. The male lead? Damaged, brooding, but oh-so-worth-it. Their arranged marriage slowly blossoms into a deep, mutual bond full of trust, loyalty, and sizzling chemistry. She falls first, but he definitely falls harder.Expect cozy vibes despite some emotional twists—there are deaths and wounds, but ultimately a heartfelt HEA. Misunderstandings are resolved fast (finally, drama with good communication!), and they move together like a true power couple. The OST adds just the right emotional weight.
It’s a slow burn, but never dull, with a rich connection and genuine warmth throughout. Bonus points for the absence of heavy politics—just pure, emotional storytelling focusing on the main couple. Our leads are challenged at every turn, but love wins. 🥰
A magnificent couple 10/10 ❤️ I definitely recommend this drama !
