Bonded In Purpose
Imagine yourself as woman, if you will, having your cousin pawned to the sworn enemy of your family who has made it clear far and wide that they are out for vengeance into a marriage alliance. She’s in love with someone and they want to get married. You want her to be happy with the man she loves, so you arrange for her and he live to escape the marriage so you can take her place. You dress in wedding clothes and take off to meet him. But, from the moment you meet him, he is rude, degrading and even physically threatening. Staying leaves you vulnerable to harm, leaving means your entire family will be wiped out.
From your childhood to present age you have sat at the feet of your grandfather and learning subjects normally reserved for men. You are a quick thinker, intelligent and good at looking past outward appearances into the heart of people, and are skilled in communication. You take nothing at face value and dig deep to learn the truth.
Eventually, you are able to gain this man’s trust and you develop a strong bond that cannot be shaken, because you both want the same thing. No matter who, or what comes your way you remain steadfast in your commitment to each other and your shared goal.
This is what this drama is about.
It shows how some people placed in places of leadership should not be leaders, how some who manipulate and contort the needs of the people entrusted to them are exploited and endangered in order to increase their power. How some blame everyone else for their ruthlessness and greed on everyone and their obsessions for their own failures. How lies you create can twist you into believing they are true. And, how putting the wellbeing of others above yours is how you make a real impact.
Every single cast member, the scriptwriter, the production, scenery, props, editing, location and music all combine into an epic and spectacular production.
This drama is a must watch. Liu Yuning and Song Zuer shine brilliantly in their individual roles and especially together. The chemistry between them that pulls their roles together is beautifully developed. They both deserve accolades for their stellar performances.

Solid original story and characters, butchered by a terrible scriptwriting. Actors did well
If you decide to watch this drama, know it will hook you (as it hooked me) with a dark and serious note of political turmoil, introducing the reasons of a deep clash and hatred between two clans, once united in a common vision and a great project of canal constructions. Unfortunatelly, just after the initial interesting 5-6 eps, it will turn into a fluffy romance & beating around the bush.C-drama scriptwriters regularly have the following problem: they can't decide a genre in which their story should be set, they can't accept a simple fact that if you open a serious plot, you must keep going with that premise, you can't suddenly turn it into an idol-drama. Personally, I don't disdain a fluffy romance either, if it is true to itself. If I am not in a mood to watch fluffy stuff, I'll pass, if I am, I'll watch it. But what I find unacceptable is the betrayal of the initial expectation the author(s) of the story created. Because it means the author(s) is manipulating me (=the audience) and challenges my intelligence.
Actually, this or these poor screen adaptor(s) challenged my intelligence even in those initial episodes, when the FL tried to impede the main male antagonist (Liu Yan) to flood the downstream of a canal by... burning the sulfur bags hidden in a granary (!) and destined to blow up a dam on the canal. In real life, by burning sulfur in that granary, a supposedly smart FL, would a) provoke explosive reaction and kill herself and b) intoxicate the whole city to the death with sulfur dioxide (SO2), probably causing a greater damage than the bad guy's flooding. I've thought, ok, it's a C-drama, no big deal...
But later another "granary plot" didn't make any sense and it regarded the main female antagonist, Su E Huang, who was able to take out of the Wei's granary a resistent wheat seed sent from the FL's clan, cook it and send it back, in order to force the ML to choose between his (Qiao) wife and his (Wei) cousin, who was supposed to preside over the granary. At this point, I've decided to check if these things happened in the original novel, just to know who to blame for the nonsense which started to accumulate, the author of the novel or the screenwriter, discovering nothing nonsensical or illogical happened in the novel.
The novel isn't great in its narrative but it is well structured in plots, actions and political intrigues. If the screenwriter sticked to it, she (they) would have done far better job. Instead, she (they) felt smarter, maybe even a better artist, able to re-write a perfectly logical and rational story and turn it into an idol-drama. Unfortunately, in this remake process, logic went to the drain. Differently from the drama, the novel MADE SENSE ALL THE TIME, its characters and their decisions, plots and motivations were realistic, both on the protagonists' and the antagonists' side. It makes sense and doesn't offend your basic knowledge and intelligence. I wonder if this dumb scriptwriter ever attended an elementary school? If she did, she would have heard of communicating vessels principle: you can't raise the level of the marsh by draining the connected river downstream...
Really, the amount of nonsense is not limited to the actions, the screen adaptation totally unnecessary exaggerated and/or twisted practically all original characters, making them nonsensical as well, Manman, the FL is this supersmart and superskilled woman (who would have blowned up herself in reality in the first eps, as I've explained above), Daqiao is a woman comitted just to one man to the point no other relation matters any more for her, and all the male characters are basically dumbed down.
Last but not least, the drama adaptation failed to maintain the atmosphere, the geist of its time, in many episodes. On the positive side, the chemistry between actors is ok, the artistic department also greatly did its job, horrible wigs aside. The direction was also fine until the last 5 eps, incredibly rushed, disorganised and incomplete.
So, unless you are able to completely switch off your brain, I wouldn't recommend you to watch this drama

MUST WATCH!!
TPoB is now added to my short list of all-time-favorite series/drama. I’ve waited everyday for episode release, and it’s all worth it. No filler episodes or boring scenes(or maybe there is- the villain screen time haha). I laughed, cried, and giggled with them. I love everything here- the cast, the costumes, the acting, and the music. The chemistry between the main characters is top tier. It’s like they are not acting at all because it feels so real. LIU YUNING, THE MAN YOU ARE!! SO HANDSOME <33. FL is also so pretty!! I love TPoB to the point that I’m now reading the novel. This drama is lighter than the novel but it’s good! I am 100% sure that I will rewatch this again and again.NOW GO AND WATCH THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY!!

I fell for the plot faster than Wei Shao folded for Man Man
Wei Shao barks more than he chews, and let’s be honest — he lives for the drama. From the second he laid eyes on Man Man, he was done. Like, done-done. Sure, he kept mumbling about sending her home, but his soul had already packed up and moved in with her. That man folded faster than an origami swan. The show did a good job in giving the historical context. You could see he was completely bewitched by her, yet despite the evident attraction, he married her reluctantly, carrying grief, resentment, and about a decade’s worth of emotional repression.
Her beauty may have caught him, but what kept him was everything else — her wit, her love for the people, her strategic mind, the way she saw him when everyone else just needed him. Somewhere along the way, she became his safe place. She was the only person who didn’t drain him. She gave, too. So seeing him pretend not to be absolutely over the moon for every one of her attention, just to be caught red-handed in front of the mirror trying on the things she made for him... Sir. Please. You’re not fooling anyone.
He fell first, but she fell harder. Watching Man Man trying — softly, cleverly, and very strategically — to close that distance between them, while he remained blissfully unaware, was comedy gold. She was dropping hints, putting in real effort, and he was just standing there clueless. I was like ‘Sir? Read the room???’
What makes them work is their tacit understanding. Their non verbal communication is second to none. Qiao Man doesn’t just love him — she understands him. Knows when to hold back, when to act, when to push. And Wei Shao? For all his stubbornness, will stand up for her in a room full of knives.
Also, shoutout to the writers for not diluting her agency the second she got married. From day one, she was offering real solutions, negotiating for Yangzhou and playing the political game like she’d been doing it all her life.
And the chemistry? Even when they’re at odds, you can feel the tension simmering under every line. It’s sweet, it’s funny, it’s occasionally unhinged—and it works.
Oh—and their attendants? Agents of chaos. Meddling, noisy, hilarious. Every one of them is a supporting character worth their own spinoff.
Now, I have to scream about Liu Duan Duan as Wei Yan, Wei Shao’s cousin. My beloved second prince from Joy of Life is back, and he is acting with so much panache, it’s actually illegal. Every time he’s on screen, I’m either cracking up, side-eyeing everyone else, or just thrilled. He plays it with such flair — sharp, layered, funny without ever being cartoonish. He’s that last dash of spice that turns a great drama into a masterpiece. I’m obsessed. More of him in everything, please.
However, what's a complete miss is the duo of A’Fan and Bi Zhi. The second they show up, the energy in the room just evaporates. Like—who told the writers this subplot was giving? They walk in, and I’m suddenly hit with an overwhelming urge to do chores I’ve been putting off for weeks. Fold laundry. Stare into space. Literally anything else. It’s not even dislike — it’s that specific kind of boredom where you know you’re supposed to care, but your brain is just buffering like, “No thanks, I’ll pass.”

Absolutely recommend this drama. its a 10 for me.
I decided to watch this because of all the controversy surrounding it. I have watched other dramas from Lui Yining but only one of Song Er. I thought these two were absolutely brilliant in their roles. Manman the strong intelligent woman who held the world in her heart, and Wei Shao a very fierce dark general, on the one hand, but we see his pain that causes him to be he way he is. We see how he grows out of the darkness and into the light. The four generals and he advisor were just terrific. I was captivated by the way the darker moments were transformed into a
lighter comedy moment. The transition was so smooth and natural it was a joy to watch. Manman 's maids were also very good, they helped guide her through the harsher moments.
For once the dialogue was not stupid but intelligently written. I thought the pace was good and held you, wanting and waiting for the next episode.
I had only intended to watch the first episode just to get a taste of what the drama would be like, unfortunately, or not, i didn't stop at one episode, but went on to watch all 9 that had been aired, i just couldn't stop. Then i joined the rest of the watchers waiting for the next episode. I had intended to stop at one and then wait until it was fully aired. But i failed. However i really enjoyed the chatter with others doing the same. That chat became part of the fun, reading the comments and replies, reading how others were feeling about the drama. Little links to behind the scenes stuff. I have really enjoyed the whole experience.
Would i. recommend this drama ABSOLUTELY if it is your interest.

Prisoner of Beauty – aka My Unexpected Drama Snack
So picture this: me, lying in a C-drama drought so dry even the sand was crying, and suddenly Prisoner of Beauty strolls in looking like a visual feast. Much appreciated, truly.Let’s start with the aesthetics—because they were lovely. The costumes and overall color palette were so pleasing to the eye. Special shoutout to the FL’s wardrobe and styling; she looked consistently beautiful, and the details were just chef’s kiss.
The ML also had his share of great styling moments. His war armor, especially the one with gold accents, was such a standout look. Paired with the long ponytail, it gave a strong, composed presence that really fit the character well. Very visually well done without being over the top.
Plot-wise, it’s the trusty ol’ enemies-to-lovers trope in a historical setting we all know like the back of our skip button. Predictable? Yup. Boring? Not really. I wasn't on the edge of my seat, but I was comfortably lounging on it. And when the story leaned into politics and scheming? That was my cue to skim like a pro. I’m a certified skipper™ and proud—life’s too short for royal strategy meetings.
Now, the main couple. Their chemistry was cozy—like warm tea, not fireball shots. But give it time. By episode 30-something I was fully sold, cheering like a stage mom. And bless this drama for skipping those dramatic breakups. I did not come here for manufactured heartbreak. I came for soft stares, quiet loyalty, and cuddly vibes.
Side characters? Oh, I loved them. I feared for them. I mourned them. Why must every kind and likable person be marked for death? Give them plot armor, I beg! But while they lived, they were lovely. That being said, the number of the side characters that survived is higher than I anticipated, so it's a good thing.
And the villains… listen. They were more “ew, go away” than “ooh, scary.” Not the type you love to hate. More like the type you fast-forward through while rolling your eyes.
All in all, Prisoner of Beauty gave me what I needed—comfort, pretty aesthetics, a slow-burn romance, and an ending that tied things up without leaving me screaming into the void. Solid 9/10. Would rewatch selected scenes while eating snacks.

The drama that sets the bar - Power. Passion. Perfection
If you are contemplating about watching this drama? JUST DO IT NOW!I read the novel before so I just randomly picked up this drama. At that time, it was still airing and I never dive into ongoing dramas since I am too impatient to wait, but the moment I watched the first episode, I knew I am in for this drama deep!
Script wise, they changed a lot in the novel which was tastefully done because the major plots of the novel was woven beautifully in the drama. I appreciated the characters more in the drama, specially Wei Shao since he was straight up red flag in the novel. Here, he was a whole green forest - especially towards the end. I appreciate how the enemies to lovers trope was created here. It took a while for them to really fall for one another - which again is believable considering that they were REALLY enemies. The tension started out so good and maintained until the drama finished. It is also commendable that misunderstandings in this drama was not stretched out because they communicated with one another. Another win for all of us who is sooo done with dramas that would take forever to resolve conflict which could have been mended with a simple conversation. No dull moments for this one, too. I was hooked in all the 36 episodes. Even the side characters were well thought of and not thrown in the drama just purely for comedic relief because even they had compelling stories, too. The drama also had an ounce of comedy.
Acting wise, as for the leads - 100/10! The moment they eyes met in that *iconic scene* of first time seeing one another, I was drawn into their characters right away. The actors, Liu Yuning and Song Zuer were AMAZING! I do not think its too much of a stretch to say that they are one of the BEST leads to have acted together. Yes! They carried the acting department EQUALLY! They personified the characters, Wei Shao and Manman, so well that I FELT EVERY EMOTION that the characters were feeling and felt like I have journeyed with them with what they were going through - whether it be happiness, anger, jealousy, tension, etc. The way they could invoke emotions and feelings from their eyes alone is a testament of their acting skills. Their chemistry together is also one for the books. I think thats the reason why their intimate scenes together is THEE BEST I have seen in ALL OF CDRAMA LAND - not joking! EXPLOSIVE!
As for the characters, as what I have mentioned, they tweaked the novel to serve the viewers the drama - and it served well! I just want to point out that Manman was exceptionally written in this drama. I also love that they preserved the contrast in the novel of an emotionally stormy husband paired with his calm, soothing, intelligent wife because it formed part of the couple's journey in growing together, in accepting each other's flaws which eventually led to love and forgiveness. Manman was smart and strong - not physically. I love that they showed the viewers that women can manifest strength not on the basis of physical combat or martial arts but in exuding feminine grace. She was of a typical ancient wife (emphasis on ancient) - she prepared meals for her husband, sewn him clothes and shoes, took care of her husband and his family, the mansion, and on top of that she loved "girlie" things and liked to look pretty - which I again appreciate because other dramas tend to look down on these aspects. But in this, I appreciate how they made me realize that these were all strengths of an ancient women. All those seemingly domestic tasks were as needed relative to Wei Shao fighting in a war or going about his tasks as the Lord of Wei. But most of all, she has always been composed and smart. Hence, she could devise a plan and strategize at par with the males (again in context of the ancient setting) which eventually helped in attaining glory for them. As for the male lead, Wei Shao, I appreciate how the drama made him feel truly human—you can genuinely understand the pain and sacrifices that shaped him. His initial anger feels completely justified. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear why he struggled with anger toward the Qiaos for a full 14 years. His doubts were also entirely understandable and never misplaced.
Its also been a long time since I religiously watched an ongoing drama and became obsessed with it. I can confidently say this will set the standard for future dramas with this trope—and it will not be easy to match. As a sucker of romantic period/costume/historical fiction dramas, this one has all the elements that make you drawn to it. I thoroughly enjoyed it that I can say that this will stay on my top lists of best CDramas of all time - at this point, I think even the BEST.
Just like the name implies, I was so hooked on this drama, I might as well be another Prisoner of Beauty. ❤️💯

Amazing plot with amazing acting
My first impression before starting on this drama was that this must have been one of those arranged marriages with a quiet despondent young master who only marry after being forced by the family.I never expected to see an ML who is so ruthless, fierce and full of hatred lord of the clan as portrayed in Episode 1. He didnt even bat an eye to refuse the marriage ordered by the martriach of the family, my fav Lady Xu. It took a battle for him to finally agree to the marriage, and it was only done for his pride and not because he bowed to the family’s wish. He is resolute, he is strict, but has a soft, kind nature that he didnt like to show much outwardly. He held back this nature because he didn't want his hatred and grudge towards the Qiao clan to dissipate hence failing to avenge his grandfather, father and brother’s death due to Qiao’s inaction in a battle 14years prior. I’d say the ML is actually the one who went through a full-fledged character development, from a ruthless, blood-thirsty, power hungry, vengeful warlord into someone filled with love and cherishes a woman born into the enemy’s clan.
Meanwhile, Qiao Man the FL has become one of my favourite FL of all time, despite me always leaning towards physcially strong with martial ability FL all this while. Although the FL here was physically weak and possess no martial prowess at all, I think she still stands with the badass of all badasses FL out there. Her intelligence and strategical prowess is top notch, and she is able to tactically curb any hurdle that came her way with ease, without needing much saving from ML. Her mental strength is even sounder than ML itself. While ML was almost swayed by the silent enemy, it had not been the same with FL. FL is someone who is extremely eloquent with amazing debate ability and extremely calm and coherent composure. She didnt need to raise her voice or snap at people to gain the upper hand. Her arguments are flawlessly calm which can stun even the fiercest lord. She knows when to advance and when to retreat like a true born strategist. I like her character on screen better as she is more fluid and scheming than the book FL. The book FL is just a flat, straight arrow with vision only to capture ML’s heart enough so he would extinguish the hatred towards her clan, nothing more nothing less. There was not much strategizing by her in the book. On a side note, the actress is dang good at crying! All the heaving and sniffling and hiccupping, i’ve never seen a crying scene as convincing as hers! It’s so close to reality. Kudos to song zu er!
I really love the 2nd ML Wei Yan portrayed by Liu Duan Duan. I have seen him in Joy of Life as the Third Prince and The Rebel Princess as General Song. I can see that he has the tendency to adopt weird characters with rather heretic nature. In TPoB he plays the cousin of ML who lusts after FL. Although he was infatuated with her, he knows he cannot move beyond his imagination. He still holds the brotherhood with ML quite dearly, and when he could no longer contain the situation, he immediately retreats to his paternal family to mend his broken heart. All three characters I have seen him play have a certain eerie demeanour with sinister look, as if he had something evil brewing behind the scene. Theyre really interesting characters which add darkish colours to each show. On a side note, the 2D portrait drawn by Wei Yan was the first portrait that i saw bore exact resemblance to the actual person. In other shows I always wonder how the hell do they find people with portrait that looks nothing like the person they were drawn after. 😂
I am happy to say that this is the first tv show that I watch on streaming platform which I never use the fast forward button. Every scene is worth watching and I have no interest at all to skip. I especially love the side couple Wei Liang-Xiao Tao who became most anticipated than even the main couple. Their antics are amusing yet fiery. Usually with goofy side couples like this one i’d just abuse the FF button and skip them all, but not on this show. Unbelievably the FF button stays pristine all throughout the show. What a feat on my part!
If xiao tao-wei liang won my vote as my favourite couple, the four Wei generals - Wei Liang, Wei Qu, Wei Xiao, Wei Dou - won my vote for most favourite side characters. Unexpectedly, they became the source of comic relief for this show in contrast to the fierce and ruthless look they pose in the first 2 episodes. Wei Xiao had been hell bent on killing FL in the first few episodes, eager to shoot her dead with his deadly arrow but at the end he was the one entrusted to escort and protect her to Boya to get reinforcement for ML’s troops. Such an irony and a full swing turn of event indeed.
Another thing that I love about this show is that all misunderstandings or conflicts are resolved in a timely manner with no excessive over-reaction involved. The plot is even more engaging than the actual novel it was after. Events in the book are mostly flat and non-dramatic (other than battle scenes) compared to the adaptation, which is why i totally love the TV FL compared to the book FL. Although I usually dislike adaptations that don't adhere to the novel’s plot, it is not the case for this show. I truly think the adaptation is even better than the novel. Although the novel is filled with spicy, dark and lustful side of the ML, I actually liked the innocence of the couple on screen more. They definitely hired the right people for this production.
The only thing dragging down my rating is the songs. They're not too catchy and memorable. I only have plans to add 1 of the songs into my playlist, the rest are really just so-so.
