William retains the same commanding presence and military discipline that made the character famous in 2016.

Welcome to M9 Saga
Okay, so August has been a pretty hectic month for me, with assignments and tutor classes piling up on top of one another. It's even harder for me to leave spare time for watching dramas (I've been attempting to binge "Ray of Light" too, but not completed yet). After one backlash after another, Youku finally shows its trump card by airing "Mystic Nine", one of my most awaited shows. Apparently, "Mystic Nine" is a spin-off or side story from the main lore, "The Lost Tomb", as it focuses on the story of Wu Xie's grandfather Wu Laogou and his friends as they traverse into supernatural edifices and tackle so-called mystical rituals, and ultimately strengthen their friendship bond over time. After "Archives: The Nanyang Mystery", I grow even more curious of how "Mystic Nine" is going to play out. Turns out I've trusted the right crew all along. By the way, "Mystic Nine" and "Archives: The Nanyang Mystery" have a gap between 20-something years and both are staged in Chinese Republican era during the world revolution ("Mystic Nine" marks my second consecutive republican drama that I complete wholeheartedly and thank God I dropped the wacky "Overdo" without being overdone). With all those above being said, let's rock on the review...In 1930s Changsha, the Mystic Nine, an alliance of nine powerful families, is led by military commander Zhang Qishan. Alongside his closest ally, the resilient Wu Laogou and the other members of the Mystic Nine, Qishan is tasked with protecting Changsha from both supernatural threats and political conspiracies. Their greatest challenge begins when Unit 401, a mysterious Zhang Family military unit, suddenly appears in a hospital before disappearing without a trace. Qishan, Laogou, Huo Xiangu, and Qi Tiezui enter the legendary Otherworld Tower to find them. Built by the ancient sorcerer Yin Changsheng, the tower is filled with deadly mechanisms, illusions, monsters, and psychological traps designed to distort memories and perceptions of time. Deep within it, they discover Star-Moon Dust, a poisonous substance capable of causing hallucinations and erasing memories. They also uncover its connection to the Life-Swapping Herb, the Mutation Pill, and the monstrous Zhai Niang Niang. The situation becomes even more dangerous when they discover that a group of Japanese soldiers has secretly occupied the tower. Led by Yoshiyuki Hatoyama, they have mastered Yin Changsheng's techniques and intend to obtain Star-Moon Dust and a Zhai Niang Niang as weapons against China. Laogou is abducted because of his unique ability to tame creatures but eventually escapes at the cost of his memories. As the Mystic Nine races to rescue Laogou and Unit 401, they uncover the tragic history of the Otherworld Patriarch and his follower Hua Zi, whose final message reveals the key to escaping Star-Moon Dust's influence. After surviving the tower and defeating the Japanese scheme, the Mystic Nine finally returns to Changsha. However, their victory is short-lived. The Ministry of War launches a secret campaign to eliminate the Mystic Nine, with Huo Wenhai carrying out the plan. With political turmoil spreading and World War II approaching, Zhang Qishan must make an impossible choice: sacrifice his personal loyalties or risk the destruction of the Mystic Nine and the people of Changsha. The battle for the Otherworld Tower may be over—but the survival of the Mystic Nine has only just begun.
TBH, I really love "Mystic Nine" script and I have to appreciate Kennedy Xu for bringing us another grand masterpiece in "The Lost Tomb" lore. Previously, a user shared that Kennedy Xu had completed the script for 7 years, before modifying it to enhance the essence of the story and make the characters feel more alive. Turns out, this method truly works and I'm hooked up from the get-go. Kennedy Xu is also notorious for creating plot holes and suspension of disbelief - but don't worry, we're going to get a thorough elaboration of the entire event near the end of the drama. Meanwhile, you'll have to deal with a ton of jumpscares during the Otherworld Tower's scene as those hallucinations may feel realistic to you. The script also amalgamates a portion of thriller mystery, horror, and humor into a perfect combination. I also like the main characters' bromance - all of their scenes feel emotional and gut-wrenching to me, especially the reunion of Qishan and Laogou. I also like Qishan's lackey Xiaoyu and Xiaojin's banter with Tiezui. No matter how intelligent and logical they are, they can never defeat Tiezui's endless hypothetic yapping. In spite of appearing as cameos, most Mystic Nine members create a strong impression for me, and their contrasting personalities bring out the essential key to understanding them better. I'm also surprised at the use of Japanese language as it's a Chinese drama (we are clearly aware of that). As an amateur Japanese language's learner, I really like the dubbing of the Japanese and can comprehend one or two things from the overall sentences spoken. Moreover, the dubbing and lip movement sync a lot that I can't find any flaws regarding dubbing issue (which occur in most dramas, especially low-budget ones). Nevertheless, I'm still a bit of bothered by the Xiangxi accent of their Mandarin when they're in the auction gala of Xinyue Restaurant. Overall, the production crew has done their best to make "Mystic Nine" alive and Youku definitely isn't the laughingstock anymore. One more thing, someone once mentioned that Zhang Family should open a harem for pretty boys - I agree a lot with his/her opinion because the Zhang Family are eye-candies and extremely good-looking to the point I need Shrimpie as my psycho boyfriend (if you've seen Archive, you'll know what I mean).
Aside from the cohesive script, "Mystic Nine" also relies heavily on the superb acting by the whole cast, thereby inducing a lot of emotionally heart-wrenching moments and humorous jokes simultaneously. Some of the former actors come back and reprise their respective roles, including William Chan, Hanson Ying, and Hu Yunhao. This is my first time watching William Chan and I have to say he's an excellent actor - you can feel his turbulence of emotions through his gaze, body language, and micro expressions, especially when he is forced to either eradicate or spare Mystic Nine's member. His masculine build also fits Qishan's description as a military commander and he's definitely a strong fighter on top of that. For Joseph Zeng, I don't connect to him on the first few episodes due to the indoctrination of his image as an innocent cute little golden retriever in my mind. I can't quite imagine him as a cunning yet street-smart tomb raider at the first place, but his performance improves after several episodes and thank God he does. "Mystic Nine" marks Joseph's third drama of the year, after "Veil of Shadows" and "The Legend of Rosy Clouds", where both of his characters are awfully written. Sebrina Chen also does well as the sole female in Mystic Nine, and she's got that badass headstrong girl's aura in herself. Meanwhile, I also want to commend the whole assemble of casts for giving "Mystic Nine" long-lasting impression in every watcher's mind.
I have literally no impression of its OSTs, as they are rarely used in the drama (I can't make baseless assumption, can I?). On the other hand, sets, backgrounds, costumes play pivotal roles in helping the watchers to contemplate the events occurred in this drama. Moreover, watchers can take a glimpse on republican era's civilization and how social hierarchy works in that epoch.
Overall, it's a wonderful experience and I have no regret wasting my time for nearly-an-hour episode because every detail and fact is worth it. For "The Lost Tomb" franchise's hardcore fan, "Mystic Nine" isn't to be missed as we can take a peek at Wu Xie's grandfather's backstory, which serves as the prelude for Wu Family's tomb raiding occupation. As you know that "The Lost Tomb" emphasizes the main branch of the Zhang Family, "Mystic Nine" takes a drastic turn by explaining more about its side branch (Qishan's original root). We also get to know Laogou and Xiangu's budding romance here (FYI, Xiangu can be considered as Huo Ling's mother and Huo Xiuxiu's grandmother). Great watch!
I know that for some orginal watchers of the tomb series there might be some disagreement with the casting but personally I think they did well. I have not watched all of the tomb series yet and still might but i loved the plot to one and twists it had.I have not read the novels but this was entertaining in my opinion. I liked the acting , it made me very much emotional at some points and laugh. For some this might not be a favourite of the Lost Tomb series but this was one of the good ones for me.
I don't want to write to much to spoil anything but I hope people give this series a chance.

One of the Best Watch This Year
As Changsha is embroiled in turmoil because of both internal & external forces, the Mystic Nine reunite for a final battle!!Ardent fans of “The Lost Tomb Series” have regularly heard of the Mystic Nine clan. The only glitch being that out of the nine clans, only Huo, Xie, Zhang and Wu exist in the current timeline. This show answers the question of what happened to the remaining clans and why they aren’t mentioned anymore. The events follow the storyline from the 2016 version, albeit except for William Chen, the cast was overhauled, and we have a new ensemble taking over their roles. The story focuses on the Japanese invasion of Changsha while the Chinese military command tries to get rid of the Mystic Nine. Zhang Qishan is faced with the difficult choice of rescuing his unit members while protecting the Mystic Nine clan. There are no two ways to deal with this problem, so he is forced to use underhanded techniques his own people.

A Mystery That Completely Pulled Me In
I came to Mystic Nine after watching Archives: The Nanyang Mystery, and as much as I enjoyed Archives, this one completely blew me away. I’m still very new to the whole Tomb Raiders universe, but this drama made me so much more intrigued by it. I expected something good because of the cast, but I genuinely did not expect to love it this much.One of the biggest things that stood out to me was how focused the story was. Maybe because I kept comparing it to Archives, I really appreciated that Mystic Nine centered almost entirely around one main mystery instead of constantly jumping between different storylines. For this kind of drama, 30 episodes felt like the perfect length. It gave the story enough time to build the mystery and world without dragging too much, and for the most part, the pacing kept me completely engaged.
The mystery itself was probably my favorite part. This is definitely a drama where you need to actually pay attention while watching. I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to understand, but you do need your brain to be present. You have to think, analyze things, and remember details because the show keeps making you question what is real, what is happening, and why. The payoff was absolutely worth it because by the end, everything came together in a way that made total sense.
And that final plot twist? I did NOT see it coming.
The whole temple storyline was easily the highlight of the drama for me. The reveal that there were never actually thousands of towers, that it was all the same place being repeated again and again while everyone kept forgetting, was so well done. I genuinely never considered that possibility, but the moment it was revealed, everything suddenly clicked. It wasn’t a twist added just for shock value. It actually explained what had been happening all along, which made it even more satisfying. I also loved the final idea that what seemed like magic was never really magic at all, but an illusion. That gave the whole mystery such a satisfying finish.
I also wouldn’t really call the drama scary. It has creepy moments, strange monsters, gruesome mutations, and some unsettling imagery, but nothing that felt too heavy or genuinely frightening. For me, the main appeal was the sense of mystery and adventure rather than horror.
Another huge reason this drama worked so well was the casting. William Chan was honestly perfect as the Master of the Nine Clans. He had exactly the kind of serious, commanding, mysterious aura the role needed, and I especially loved the rare moments where he would break out of that stiff personality and smile or show a softer side. He fit the role so naturally that I honestly can’t imagine anyone else playing him. I haven’t watched the older Mystic Nine, but he made me curious enough to consider it.
I’ll admit that I originally started the drama because of Joseph Zeng, and he absolutely delivered. I loved his character, his wit, and especially his development throughout the story. He added so much energy to the drama, and his chemistry with William Chan was one of the best parts of the show. Their dynamic developed so well, going from hostility and mistrust to genuine understanding and friendship. I especially liked how Lao Gu eventually came to understand the Master’s personality and the reasons behind his actions.
The supporting cast also added a lot. 8th Master was such a fun character and brought some much-needed humor into the story, while the Master’s guards were also great. In general, the chemistry between the characters was one of the drama’s strongest qualities. Everyone bounced off each other so naturally, and those relationships made the show even more entertaining.
Episode 29 was a complete roller coaster. Even while watching it, I had a feeling there was no way the drama would actually end like that, and I liked how the story ultimately used its own mystery to resolve everything. The ending was still bittersweet, though, because just when the different clans had finally become allies and everyone had reached a better understanding, they had to separate again.
The drama wasn’t perfect. The auction storyline was definitely too long for me. It did not need five episodes and honestly could have been wrapped up much faster. There were also a few slower moments here and there, but none of that ruined the overall experience for me.
Visually, the drama was also really strong. The cinematography, costumes, historical setting, world-building, monsters, and overall atmosphere were all very well done. The OST was nice too, and the production helped make the world feel immersive.
Overall, Mystic Nine was just incredibly entertaining. It doesn’t feel like a drama that relies only on romance or emotional attachment to keep you watching. Its biggest strength is how well it pulls you into its mystery, world, characters, and atmosphere. It keeps you curious, gives you plenty to think about, and then rewards you with an ending that actually ties everything together.
I genuinely feel like I could watch ten seasons of this cast and these characters. The chemistry, the mystery, the writing, and the world completely worked for me.
Definitely one of my favorite dramas of the year, and one I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy, mystery, adventure, and a little bit of horror.

Life for people, Life for country
I really rarely write a review for a show but if the show give me something so valuable or so memorable , I'll definitely write one.As I'm not very like the acting of William, I didn't have a high expectation for this show, and decide to watch because of some of drama I watched have a link (same writer) with other dramas that I have already watched.
As I watch, the genre is very rich, not only it have adventure but also action, brotherhood, nationalism, a little bit of horor and thriller, so I'm hook with this show. And all the actors and actresses in this drama have a good acting skill, it thrilling me.
There is a moments that gave me very deep impresion is when the higher up must to up root the gang, the whole gang or the mystic nine. And the response of all the leader of mystic nine is what gave me a slap.
Why?
Although the government, or may be the era it self make you 'must died' , and although you make a contribution to the country very significantly but you and your whole gang or rather the name of the gang must disappear from Changsa, but the 9 leaders still love his country, defend the country with what they have.
So that's right, how disappointed your feel toward your government but the country itself didn't wrong, don't give up your nationality, because it very worth to dedicate your skill, your professional to the country.

This was fantastic. I think the way they brought everything together in the last 10 episodes was genius. The ending was so clever, and definitely left it open to a sequel so they should you know...get on that lol.Special shout out to Joseph Zeng. The entire cast did great, had perfect arcs, amazing chemistry. The bromance was chef's kiss. Joseph Zeng's performance was incredibly special for me. The emotional range that he possessed in this drama was on a another level. If he wasn't making me laugh he was making me cry. They put him through it in this drama and met every challenge to perfection. He's such a great actor, and I really need to watch more of his stuff I was very impressed.
No negatives, not even a nitpick, my fave Cdrama of the year by far. Watch it, but watch it with an open mind, and patience is my advice.

Too Gimicky
So far, this series seems to aim to be cute. It doesn't take itself seriously or cohere as a story. I'll give it some time. The acting is performative and leaves a lot to be desired. Too much male posturing and displays of virility in the first episode.The kidnapped female is too coy and coquettish. Historia con buen suspenso e intriga
Este drama está lleno de aventuras, suspenso, intriga y misterio, habían momentos que se tornaba un poco lentos, pero se compensaba porque después pasaban miles de cosas emocionantes y te atrapaban enseguida sin soltarte, también hubo muchas situaciones que daban muchísimo miedo, o no sé si seré la cobarde, pero si me asusté en varias ocasiones y eso un punto positivo 😅 los personajes eran interesantes, aunque en los personal no pude tener una conexión profunda con ellos, (excepto con el octavo señor con el que sentía un instinto protector y con el que me podía sentir identificada en varias ocasiones) pero me agradaban bastante y los admiraba porque eran muy inteligentes, valientes y fuertes; llevaban muy bien la historia y aunque cada uno tenía su personalidad bien marcada y eran extremadamente poderosos, tenían su matices y debilidades, lo cuál los hacía humanos y es algo que se aprecia bastante.Aunque técnicamente es una historia independiente, me parece que algunas cosas las hubiera apreciado mejor si hubiera visto el drama anterior, pero son detalles pequeños, igualmente se puede disfrutar completamente si solo se ve este drama; el final fue un poco confuso por un momento, pero con él, pudieron hacer un giro de trama interesante, así que estuvo bien.
Siento que es un drama muy bueno, con escenarios increíbles, historias emocionantes y personajes diversos y atractivos; así que la recomiendo a todos aquellos que quieran ver una historia atrapante de comienzo a fin.
