worth the watch, but beware of the 2nd couple

Before reading, the reason why I dropped the drama: the 2nd cp started to take up too much time and the plot kinda spiraled from there. I was also studying for exams at the time so I decided to drop because it wasn't keeping that grip on me anymore. That being said, the following are my rambly thoughts (90% positive) while I was actively watching!

its a VERY serviceable romance drama (really reminds me of it happened one summer with piper and brendan).
i think its actually sooooo good for multiple reasons
esther is sooo cute as yu meiren <3 she’s so adorable and not annoying.. she walks the thin wire between over the top dramatic and so true and genuine in her character !! like i LOVE her character cause she’s so pretty and can be a little airheaded and dumb BUT she also has a phd in ornithology and she’s a woman in stem!! and knows she can be smart and dumb !! someone who can do both i love her

you dont think esther and zbb can have any chemistry but you would be dead wrong.. the way they shot this drama and the details they show the ML and FL falling for each other (the FL getting slow-mos of the ML being attractive and hot, and the ML reaching out instinctively when he thought the FL fell.. and trying to play that off… man and then him waking up earlier than her and still holding her hand in the cave… and pretending to be asleep and continuing to hold her hand) THE DETAILS ARE WHAT GETS TO ME and like when meiren was pretending to be someone else with the bucket on her head and zbb’s like…. shy (?) smiles where hes like just SOOOOO in love with her quirkyness and even tho shes not wearing make up (one of her insecurities) he doesnt mind and his gaze is so 宠溺 its making me melt like his smiles are so…

zbb’s voice is so good. like its so deep and has the right amount of grain + rasp without it sounding like he needs to drink some water and it feels so comfortingly deep + cozy + safe -> 安全感max like

like its such a serviceable drama and i think its on par with you are my hero (for me its better but idt mom would like it) because i just love how yu meiren is smart but unapologetically dumb and a little brainless (exactly how i want to be) and is also at the same time so charming without being annoying !!!!!! so good

also looking at some of the kisses and behind the scenes videos…. about to be in for a spicy ride (also the kiss poses are so awkward poor zbb lmao)

but yeah you never wouldve thought that i would like a esther yu drama and with zbb like (i think wang hedi and ysx have more chemistry irl but zbb as zhuang yu is soooo charismatic and fits with yu meiren so well)

the actors make their characters feel real and the plot + writing makes the characters come alive and it feels so real…..

cons: there is a little bullying in the beginning (the guy thinking she’s stupid, standing her up, being a dick) but i think the redemption in the latter half is gonna make up for it so i think its okay rn (but that is also why i like it… but some ppl might not like the uh. asshole ML).

watch for good looking leads

Vin Zhang is the only good thing in the show. i like esther yu in other shows, not here. improbable plot.
great production and the discussion on finding a solution to malaria is great, i like the research aspect of it, also that the professions of the leads are different--FL is also an ornithologist but chooses to pursue being an influencer, but the ugly duckling/stunning beauty difference is never apparent.
also the SML and SFL individual are fine but their story takes too much of screentime unnecessarily.

The Side/Second Love Story Is Atrocious

I would give this show more stars except I find the side story for the second couple so horribly awful.
I find the kind of lies and manipulation going on there appalling, and not at all funny or cute. It doesn't make sense either. I find it kind of mind boggling that the writers and producers went forward with this. I think the couple could be quite cute together if it weren't for this messed up storyline.
I have an extension on my browser that lets me speed up videos, so I'm using it to speed through the scenes with the second leads. But this storyline is honestly making it hard for me to continue watching the rest of the series, as it's taking away from my enjoyment of the main storyline.

I don't love the "white lies" told in the main storyline, but at least they're not on quite the same level as the stupid, appalling, and horrible lies the CEO is telling in the side storyline, and the reasoning behind them does make some sort of sense. I find the chemistry between the main couple enjoyable. While I'm not a fan of the cutesy, babyish ways of the female lead I don't find it annoying either, and it makes sense for the storyline. When the ML assumes she's stupid because of the way she looks and behaves she decides to double down on that impression, hiding her true intelligence from him. Slowly the ML seems to realize there's more to her than his snap judgment initially led him to believe.

For me the best thing about this show though is the scenery. It's so absolutely beautiful. The way this has been filmed is really great too. Visually this series is very soothing and peaceful to watch.

Light and refreshing!

I’ve been putting this drama on hold for sooo long, and I regret not watching it earlier *sigh*. It’s something light and refreshing to watch, not much villains, also funny especially at the forest and dinner with Wei Shan’s parents after Zhuang Yu just came back from overseas, that scenes cracked me up. I couldn’t think of any other actress to play Yu Wei Shan because this role was perfectly suited for Eshter Yu. Any funny, cute and quirky characters really suited Eshter Yu, just like in the LBFAD and Moonlight drama. Not to mention Zhang Vin character were he was initially upright but consistently sided with the FL's antiques lol.

However, I agree with other people saying the second lead couple screen time was too much to the point the story seemed dragging to me. The drama could have made it a 26-30 episodes. Anyway, the drama was decently good, funny, the FL was truly a drama queen, loved her for that.

typical love story

Almost nothing special about the show. Typical FL have a crush on ML when she was in school then met ML again etc. etc.

Female lead character is meh.. nothing out of the box. ZBB acting is good and nice to look at.. but character is also meh. I am not sure if Yu Shuxin's role here is supposed to be exaggerating but it seems very "loud". their chemistry is much better off screens as compared to the drama. Both of them also shine better in other drama.

However, this show is still very light and fluffy and have abit of humour elements in it. Both them also have a fair bit of lovey moments and development is also ok. Would still recommend to watch to kill time.

FL&ML love story is so adorable so heartfelt and so lovey dovey. My teeth ache becoz it too sweet I simply cannot 'tahan'. I totally can relate and find myself smilling shyly in between their cute scene. Then best romance scene form Zhang Bibin so far. I personaly think, his acting skill is much² better here than Here We Meet Again.

However SML &SFLM story was taking so much airing time and make the whole series felt draggy. Im not rooting for them at all and keep on skipping their scene.

Balance between every choices.

I like the drama it really makes me happy and cry, I totally relate with the feeling of being alone and having to go through the pain. Showing strength to others and being able to see the world that you can do it, but damn there’s always part of itself where you’re not able to control. I think this is my 3rd dramas I watch that Esther is the main role, I don’t know why some people don’t like her, where she only acting and bring lives the character. She is very sweet always, clever yet smart. I really really like her.

A Romance of the Little Forest : Between Blossoms and Silence

🌾 If you ask what makes a drama linger in your heart, A Romance of the Little Forest is a perfect answer. From the moment I pressed play, A Romance of the Little Forest felt like a breath of fresh countryside air. The green woods, the gentle chirp of birds, the trickle of stream water — everything about the setting made me exhale and relax. The drama isn’t flashy; instead, it invites you to pause, look around, and let love grow slowly.

🌸 The story centers on Zhuang Yu, a botanist who is a cool, focused person, deeply absorbed in his research, indifferent to fame, social life, or love. Years ago, he unintentionally broke the heart of Yu Meiren, a cheerful, warm girl from the countryside who secretly admired him. Over time, Meiren evolves: she earns a doctorate in ornithology, then chooses to become a fashion blogger to escape the pressure of scientific research. Fate brings them together again in a village called Qingshui, where Zhuang Yu goes for fieldwork and unwittingly stays at Meiren’s family bed-and-breakfast.

🌿From its soothing rural backdrop to the slow-burn romance between a passionate botanist and a vibrant fashion blogger, it’s one of those modern dramas that doesn’t just entertain — it heals.

I feel like I found a little sanctuary watching this. Especially on days when the world outside felt noisy, Meiren’s laughter in the forest, Zhuang Yu quietly tending to his plants, resonated with me.

The title “Little Forest” makes sense: the forest isn’t huge, grandiose, or mythical. It is small, intimate, and personal. It becomes the space where two people carry their pasts in their pockets and decide maybe to leave them behind together.

🌼 And I rarely focus on OSTs, but 好像都一样 (All Seems The Same) touched something deep within me—it makes my heart quietly smile.

🍃 Additionally, there are some less perfect aspects. The secondary plotlines: Some of the screen time goes to supporting couples or side stories, which I found less engaging, because I was mostly invested in Meiren & Zhuang Yu. I saw other viewers share similar feelings. And, if you prefer big declarations, you may feel the romance here is subtle. For me, that’s part of its charm — but it might not be for everyone.

☀️ A Romance of the Little Forest is like a soft-sunlit afternoon walk in a green wood. It’s about quiet growth, warm company, and the kind of love that doesn’t need grand gestures — just presence, kindness, and patience. If you’re in the mood for something healing, then this drama is worth your time.

Bubbly romance

"Romance of the Little Forest" is a delightful escape that has truly won my heart, earning a solid 9/10 in my book. From the very first episode, I was captivated by its charming blend of romance, humor, and warmth. The story follows the journey of the female lead, a bubbly and determined fashion blogger, and the male lead, a reserved and brilliant botanist. Their contrasting personalities make for an engaging and heartwarming love story that unfolds beautifully over time.

The chemistry between the main leads is absolutely enchanting. Their interactions feel natural and genuine, filled with moments that made me smile, laugh, and swoon. Watching their relationship evolve from misunderstanding to mutual admiration and love was an absolute treat. The scenic beauty and the soft, romantic atmosphere of the drama create the perfect backdrop for their love story, making it even more immersive and comforting.

The performances of the main leads were spot on. The female lead's vibrant and playful personality brought so much life to the drama, while the male lead's quiet charm and emotional depth made him incredibly endearing. Their journey of growth, support, and understanding felt authentic and relatable.

However, one aspect that slightly dampened my enjoyment was the excessive screen time given to the second lead couple. Their storyline felt dragged out and lacked the chemistry and appeal that made the main romance so compelling. At times, their scenes felt like an unnecessary distraction that took away from the heart of the drama. I found myself wishing those moments were spent further exploring the main couple's journey instead.

Despite this minor drawback, "Romance of the Little Forest" remains a comforting and enjoyable drama that I find myself returning to whenever I need a dose of romance and positivity. It's a beautifully crafted love story with endearing characters, lovely cinematography, and an uplifting message about love and self-discovery.

A beautiful and realistic portrayal of life

This is one of the rarest dramas that got me hooked from beginning to end. It is well written and the acting is top notch.
FL and ML - I love watching Esther Yu in all of her modern dramas that I have seen. In this drama, her characters were similar to my own and her struggles with the treatment she received growing up due to her and other people perception of what “beauty” is has made her who she was as an adult. She worked hard to obtain her scholastic achievement to perhaps make up for her perceived lack of beauty (as is in my case). She was doubtful of the intentions of the ML and couldn’t face the world without having her makeup on. Ditto! However, she’s very brave and kind hearted and was able to fall back on her intelligence to bounce back after a break up! I can totally relate to all her experiences in life.
ML - it’s the first time I have seen Vin Zhang as a male lead. Oh my… his good look and acting was one of the best. I found myself smiling every time I watched him and Esther doing their antics as a couple. Some people commented that there were not enough kissing scenes between them. That’s true however the subtle changes in his behaviour towards female lead and his facial expressions truly showed how much he cared for her. When they finally did kiss, it was sizzling hot!
Best scene - when the ML described what beauty is in relation to what he has seen in Yu Mei Ren. WOW!!! The script was written by someone who understands what true beauty is! So deep… and I’m impressed and inspired.
Not so good - too much focus on the second couple. I found myself skipping most of their scenes. However there was something to learn from what they have faced as a couple. In addition, I found the part where the ML simply left the country without telling the FL was infuriating. Yes, they had not declared their relationship, but surely there was enough feelings to merit better communication to stop any misunderstanding!
I highly recommend you watch this drama for its beautiful script and acting by the main couple who I think are suited for each other 🙂 I love the songs too even though I don’t speak the language.
If you have any recommendations on something similar to A romance in the little forest, please let me know. Thanks.
