We stan for a power couple!

This was a good watch.
Gotta say, I'm always weary of 40 ep dramas, since  usually there is a whole load of dragging,  annoying second leads, misunderstandings and break-ups involved with a bunch of filler scenes.
While all of the above mentioned was still present in this one, it was done in a more bearable way. The premise of the story is interesting, a seemingly simple amnesia trope with a twist.
The leads are evenly matched and their  multidimensional characters are written quite well.

It's my first time seeing the actor who plays the ML and I really loved how he captured his character. I got to see how his walls gradually crumbled against his ''wife'', and I cracked up how his web of lies always backfired almost instantly haha it's a perfect illustration of ''killing with kindness''  loool.  He portrayed a cold and calculating persona very well , and eventually became completely disarmed by the FL. His comedic timing was great, I found him hilarious on numerous occasions.

It's also my first drama seeing the actress that plays the FL, and I really loved her. Her character is a very smart, strong woman who can be utterly devoted and strives to be her partner's equal in every way. She is no damsel in distress for sure. I like that she made the ML work for his redeeming, because while I understand his motives for deceiving her, it was still very wrong of him to do so, and I appreciate that the FL  recognised that and was not so forgiving. However, I am not a fan of her stabbing him, I don't think that was necessary, it must be a new trend in dramas where FLs stab their ML...

Once we get over this arc, their real relationship starts, and they're goals. We stan for a power couple !!
Also,  can I just say the FL is a queen for establishing boundaries with her mother in law, that was amazing!!

All in all, beautiful directing, smart dialogues, hilarious comedic reliefs,  amazing costumes and strong, intelligent leads, as well as great supporting characters ( the ML and his bestie is the chaotic duo I never knew I needed lmao), and a proper wedding as well as a happy ending? Sign me up!!
Although for me the story became a little bit boring after the leads wedding and I skipped a lot, still, a pretty solid watch.

When a man simps for an unworthy woman

The best thing about the drama is the relationship between Cui Xingzhou and Liu Miantang during the amnesia arc. Everything else is draggy, boring, and forgettable.

One thing I like is that both Xianzhou and Miantang are independent characters who move with a purpose. Despite amnesia, Miantang is an extremely intelligent and capable woman. And, Xianzhou continues to pursue his goals regardless of his growing feelings for Miantang. Both are cunning and manipulative who plot against each other adding spice to their chemistry. However, the drama doesn't do a good job at exploring a serious side of their relationship. They are both morally ambiguous characters. Miantang biting Xiangzhou's lip to show him what hate tastes like is sexy, sensual, and a little bit disturbing. It could've been a great start to a darker and more passionate romance. But, the writers choose to fall back on comedy and boring romantic tropes where both characters do nothing but smile and hug each other.

Miantang disappointed me quite a bit. At the beginning, she is lovely, devoted, intelligent, and charismatic. After the amnesia arc, she magically switches personalities and becomes an emotionless hard-ass. There is no nuanced character development to show a gradual change from a loving housewife to a ruthless bandit. Instead, the writers completely revamp her character, as if she suffers from a dissociative identity disorder, and give her a new personality even though she is the same person.

Another thing that annoyed me is Miantang's treatment of Xiangzhou. Yes, he deceived her, but his transgressions are not egregious enough for her to stab him and plot his murder, especially when they are meant to get back together. Moreover, he is the only one who has to continuously apologize and be humbled in front of her family while she gets on her moral high horse about deceit and betrayal. I blame these issues on inconsistent writing. Miantang's character has no logical development. She is a housewife, a bandit; then, she proceeds to plot revenge, abandons revenge, abandons Ziyu, abandons her plans to never marry, and comes full circle from being a housewife to being a housewife again. Because of this, I have no idea what kind of a person she is and what drives her. Her actions are sporadic and are not properly explained. Xiangzhou is a ruthless and cunning warlord with a voice as smooth as velvet, who falls hopelessly in love. Instead of exploring that side of his personality while he tries to get back together with Miantang, the writers reduce him to a cliche simp begging for her to love him after she betrays him back and stabs him, which should have been a point of no return in their relationship. Although, she becomes nice and loving again, it is hard to ignore her insanely unfair treatment of him and a complete lack of accountability for any of her actions.

The drama does have some fun and touching moments, but the plot lacks depth and direction, and, the pacing slows down quite a bit in the second half. First, the story focuses on Xiangzhou and Miantang's romance. Then, it drastically changes to a political intrigue making the main couple's interactions very scarce. The villains are shallow and underdeveloped. Prince Sui is a caricature of a mustached bad guy trying to seize the throne. There is no deeper dive into his thought process and scheming. Sun Yuner disappears for many episodes at a time making her completely forgettable. The story overplays cliches and goes overboard with some side arcs, instead of focusing on the characters that matter to the plot progression. And, all the secondary characters are extremely bland and forgettable.

Overall, I enjoyed the first half and was mostly bored with the second half. The drama would've been better with a more serious plot and a lot less episodes. Xiangzhou and Miantang are both gray and complex characters who do not fit into a typical rom com setting with passionless vanilla romance.

Honestly underrated show. Deserving of more praise !

This show honestly took me by surprise. By the overall rating, I thought it would be a mid-level drama, but I was completely wrong. I found the story to be different, not the usual cliché. The acting of the main couple was great, and I really enjoyed watching their connection and story all the way through. Did it become a little frustrating for a couple of episodes? Yes. But the writers, instead of taking the normal route of dragging out the confusion, allowed the main character to progress into their own selves with growth. They changed and adapted with the flow of the writing. Honestly, the main male actor in this show is so underrated; I loved how he was able to adapt to his character, and you end up loving his personality throughout. The female lead was strong, and she had her own journey that was actually shown and progressed with her. There wasn't any girl needing a man's help. I absolutely adored this show, and it will go on my "do not forget" list. The fighting scenes towards the end, along with all the development and character growth, had me smiling, and the pining for each other was so much fun. Those who yearn = earn 🥹

A hate and love story is the sweetest

The hate and love side of the story looks so natural to them. They acted like no hesitation. They so normal. The chemistry hits different. Churan looks so pretty in all hanfu costume. Wanyi bloom in this drama than the other drama he had. The drama and leads deserve a highest rating and awards. The two actors deserve another drama. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Sweet Turning Angsty

The first arch of the drama is to show how sweet FL is an an amnesia victim. Her loving support to her fake husband won her his genuine affection. I was so worried when the time was getting close for ML to have his wedding to his cousin. I thought, no way FL is going to be a concubine, and plus I really don't want this drama to turn into a harem story!

The second arch is when she regained her full memory. We can see how FL suddenly changed her demeanor from sweet and head over heels in love with her husband, into this angry woman who found out that everything has been a lie. Her smile is just not the same anymore. She kept up pretending to still have the amnesia for a bit, and this is where it differs from the novel, where she left him without a second thought!

Ep 22, ML just found out the real identity of FL, which I think he's not totally sad about, because all along he thought of Lu Wen as his match.

I've been a fan of Zhang Wan Yi. I'm glad I get to watch him again not long after Lost You Forever 2. He does have a rather peculiar stare, which some people might say that he's too stiff. But not me, I like it, it's his trademark of some sort! His facial expressions can be very serious, and also very funny! And the way he looks at FL, swoon!! I never watched Wang Chu Ran in any drama before (only heard about high criticism of her drama with Yang Yang) but boy she's so beautiful, and acting wise she's matching so well with Zhang Wan Yi.

To be fair to ML, it wasn't his plan to fake their marriage in the first place. FL called him "husband" and as a General Commander, he seized that opportunity and just played along with it. Otherwise the whole drama wouldn't exist haha.

The Empress is so endearing. She's so cute and most importantly she didn't turn evil all the way till the end. I love watching the continuance of her relationship with the Emperor, all so sweet!

This is more of a comedy romance than a serious drama. I laughed a lot watching this, it makes me happy. If you like a drama with strong and smart FL, very strong chemistry, funny, just enough palace politics which is not the central story, then this is a must watch. I enjoy it thoroughly. Have re-watched and will watch it again for sure.

And the OSTs, love them!!!

My two favourite dramas in 2024 are this and The Double.

ML is the cutest

I just love the ML actor's facial expressions especially in comedic parts and bits. Although the dubbing sometimes make it obvious that he doesn't own that voice (I'm really not sure if it's him or not I'm too lazy to research) but like, he has a very cute face but the voice sounds very manly (idk how to explain it well). Our FL is also sooo soo pretty I love her face!

The Empress and Emperor storyline bored me at first, I knew they're gonna learn to love eo and it took TIMEE but I eventually loved The Empress. If she can't escape that place she might as well used her power to control people. 10/10 behavior. She's also very loyal to The Emperor, I wanna hug her so much.

This one I loved the characters more than the story. Romance is cute, story predictable but overall very solid!

Fave line:
“The Lord will pick anything to you, even the moon.”
“He won't.”
“Why?”
“Because he knows that, if I want it, I will climb the ladder myself to pick the moon. So, he will always be the reliable man who stands on the ground and holds the ladder steady. And I will completely trust him.”
*sobbing*

The Magic Of Crab Roe Rice Turns Enemies To Lovers

An enemy to lovers trope which I am a total sucker for. The way the story began for this drama totally caught me on a hook. A once powerful bandit, "Lu Wen" known for cleverness, skills and scheming falls in the hands of the one and only persistent, cunning and strong "Lord Huai Yang", who turns out to be even more scheming. He planned a fake marriage scheme without knowing that the fake wife whom he thought was one of Lu Wen's dear concubine is actually his mortal enemy whom he had spent all his time chasing. This was how interesting the beginning of the drama was that I couldn't stop watching it.

It took quite a lot of time before "Lu Wen" aka Liu Mian Tang was actually able to regain her full memories. During the time she spent together with Lord Huai Yang disguised as her fake husband "Cui Jiu", little did they both know that they were slowly falling in love with each other amidst the lies. There is quite a lot to say about Liu Mian Tang's character, when she lost all her memories, she was a remarkable wife to Cui Jiu, she remained faithful to him despite knowing his so-called short comings as a husband, she was very good at doing business and was so clever that she could make a life of her own to feed her family. In short, she kind of stood as a bread winner. I admire her good qualities as a wife to Cui Jiu. Certainly, this was one of the many reasons why Lord Huai Yang was deeply charmed by her, simply because of her personality. Then, when she finally regained all her memories as Lu Wen, there was a quick but very evident shift in her character. We were shown how truly clever and skilled she is.

Cui Jiu or Lord Huai Yang on the other hand, was a character that set the standard. Regardless of his lies and schemes. As the storyline progressed, we were able to be shown a softer and comedic side of him compared to his usual strong upfront. However, what remarkably caught most viewers attention, even mine, was his extreme cleverness. Especially with how he dealt with things at court and between the two lords (forgot their names lol) while at the same time chasing after Liu Mian Tang after their fake marriage had ended. By the time the two of them had finally let their strong feelings for each other break free, with Lord Huai Yang's persistence and consistent 'chasing' after Liu Mian Tang, we were finally given the powerful couple who complimented each other so well. An addition to that would be their lovey-dovey scenes.

This is where I would have to give the drama an 8.5 instead of a solid 10. Somehow for me, the storyline became a bit bland during the second half and mostly towards the end. I did enjoy the first half so much and I am glad that they focused on their romantic scenes, but the second half of the storyline underdelivered for me. I find the villain Prince Sui to be completely weak and nothing but a fool. The other so-called 'chief instructor' didn't do much to help make it look like they were really against a strong and cunning opponent. It would have been much nicer if the 'villain' was at par with our beloved powerful couple. The ending of the villain dissatisfied me and all it took was his own mother 'empress dowager' for him to fall from his high horse. I do get that it was also all thanks to Liu Mian Tang and Lord Huai Yang's genius masterplan, but I wished they showed us more of them and their fight scenes. Honestly, that fight scene at the last episode when they were breaking out of prison was the best scene for the second half of the drama, apart from their adorable and well-detailed wedding.

I also had this thought, maybe if the director was going to focus on their romance, wouldn't it had been better if they started the drama by showing us more of Lu Wen and Lord Huai Yang fighting against each other then inserting their fake marriage and then them falling in love. If they did such, Lu Wen's character would be less vague and have much more dimension. It would have been much more interesting if we got to explore more about their past together when they were enemies. Regardless, I still enjoyed this drama because of the actors. Wang Churan truly suited her character as Liu Mian Tang and Lu Wen, she is a beautiful actress and would love to see her in more baddass roles like Lu Wen, as it suited her so much. Zhang Wan Yi's portrayal of Lord Huai Yang, Cui Jiu and Cui Xing Zhou on the other hand, with his comedic facial expression, strong facial expression, and emotional facial expression during heavy scenes deserves an applause. He has his own charm in completely captivating eyes of viewers, specially in scenes where he dominates at court or at war. They both did a great job that I still got to enjoy this drama because of them in the end. I also love the cute chemistry between them.

For the supporting characters, I honestly only liked Xueji the most. At first I thought her character would annoy me like Yun er's character but she was the complete opposite. I loved her character apart from the main leads and wished she had more romantic scenes with Ziyu. As for the second couple, He Zhen and Zhao Quan, I didn't feel much chemistry between them, although I did find Zhao Quan funny.

Overall, all the cast did a great job. I am looking forward to more of Zhang Wan Yi and Wang Churan's future project.

Are You The One is a drama that is like an onion??

Why do I say Are You The One is like an onion? Because the more you unwrap it, the more layers there are to this drama, making it so interesting. Are You the One is clearly a drama with strong appeal, both visually and in its writing. It’s not just about romance—it’s about how the story is carefully constructed, from its luxurious visuals and meaningful dialogue to characters that grow in a realistic and emotional way.

From the very beginning, the costumes already make a statement. They’re not just beautiful—they feel expensive. Every layer, color choice, and embroidery detail is thoughtfully designed to reinforce status and character. There’s a consistent sense of elegance. Even when Lord Huaiyang is in disguise, his “mid-level” styling still looks refined.

To be honest, I started this drama because of Zhang Wanyi. But while watching, I found myself captivated by the charm of Wang Churan. She has a very strong presence as an actress. Even without elaborate hair accessories—just a simple bun—she still looks effortlessly beautiful and full of aura. Well… I know her face card is already strong and save the economy bank😌

The character Miantang, portrayed by Wang Churan, is delivered beautifully. At the beginning, when she loses her memory, we see a “pure” version of her—someone who receives love from a man she believes to be her husband, Cui Xingzhou, even though it’s all built on a lie. The way she trusts, the way she slowly opens her heart—it all feels incredibly sincere. She loves without the burden of the past, without suspicion. Then when the truth is revealed… that’s when the emotions explode. The feeling of being deceived, betrayed, and losing her sense of ground—it all crashes at once. And what truly hits is not just the sadness, but the inner conflict. Because on one hand, she’s angry. But on the other, the feelings she has developed are real.

Her journey—from pain, anger, and distancing herself, to slowly softening—is not instant. And that’s exactly what makes it feel realistic. You can see how she tries to protect herself, yet cannot completely erase what she once felt. So when she finally begins to open her heart again, it’s not simply “okay, I forgive you,” but a process of understanding, acceptance, and making peace with her own emotions.

Another thing I really appreciate is the dialogue. It’s not empty or skippable—it’s engaging, layered, sometimes serious, sometimes even humorous. The way each character speaks reflects their intelligence, status, and mindset.

One of the most satisfying moments is how Cui Xingzhou “fights back” against Lian Chou. It’s not a loud, confrontational conflict, but a strategic game. Cunning versus cunning—and that’s exactly what makes it so fun hahaha. Xingzhou doesn’t just win for the sake of it; he operates on the same level, with calculation and control. That’s what makes the conflict feel alive and sophisticated.

I also love how the drama writes Xingzhou’s mother. She’s not the typical cliché mother who rejects her son’s partner purely because of status differences. Her initial rejection feels human—driven by fear of social judgment and outside influence. But after witnessing Liu Miantang’s kindness, she doesn’t remain stubborn. She learns, understands, and eventually accepts her—loving Miantang like her own daughter. Her development is subtle but meaningful.

In conclusion, this drama has a combination that gives it a distinct sense of class—it’s not only visually pleasing, but also emotionally rich. It’s definitely worth rewatching even after you’ve finished it.

Fate, comedy, and conflict

“Are You the One?” captivates with a compelling premise: two rivals that become a fated couple whose love is threatened by a great lie. This setup immediately hooked me, as it’s clear from the outset that obstacles will stand in the way of their happiness. While a promising concept doesn’t automatically make for a great drama, I found that AYTO successfully delivered a satisfying viewing experience.

The drama excels with its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, talented cast, and a conclusion that manages to be pleasing. However, it does have its flaws.

Let’s start with the standout elements, beginning with the cast. I would like to start off by saying that the magic of great actors in comedic roles is undeniable. Having seen Zhang Wanyi in Lost You Forever, I was already aware of his impressive skills, but his performance in AYTO elevated my admiration. His portrayal of Cui Xingzhou diverges sharply from his previous role, yet he handles it with remarkable finesse. His comedic timing, whether through subtle facial expressions or his delivery, was spot-on. His tendency to speak in a whisper — which is something he did quite oftenly —, however, bothered me greatly at times, as it felt unrealistic that other characters could hear him when he spoke so softly.

Wang Churan, by contrast, had a less comedic role, though her early scenes were filled with humor that she executed brilliantly, forming a delightful duo with Zhang Wanyi. Her character undergoes significant shifts throughout the drama — arguably too drastic, though that’s more a writing issue than an acting one — but she consistently maintained a strong performance from start to finish.

Regarding the plot, a key topic of debate among viewers was the separation of Xingzhou and Miantang. Some felt Miantang forgave Xingzhou too quickly, while others thought she should have taken even longer or maybe not forgiven him at all. Personally, I appreciated the narrative choices here; their time apart felt justified, and their gradual reconciliation was coherent and believable. The pacing of their relationship was neither rushed nor dragged out, striking a balance that complemented the growth of both characters, who were well-crafted with relatable desires, fears, and distinct personalities.

One aspect I regretted was the waning romance between Xingzhou and Miantang after they officially got together. In the final episodes, their dynamic shifted from passionate lovers to more of a friendly rapport, which felt at odds given how recently they had married. Nonetheless, they remained the highlight of the drama.

Now, onto the elements that didn’t quite work for me:

A significant political event pivotal to the second half of the drama was glossed over with a simple time skip. This was a missed opportunity, as the event’s importance to the story warranted more on-screen exploration rather than being summarized off-screen. Though I do believe it shouldn’t be too dragged out, it would’ve been appreciated to see at least a little bit of those events.

As for the supporting characters, Shi Xueji emerged as a pleasant surprise, bringing kindness and warmth that resonated with viewers. However, her romance felt rushed towards the end, lacking depth. It did have a big potential, as we got to see Ziyu and her start to have feeling for each other and deeply care for one another. Ziyu, however, only let go of Liu Miantang in the very ending of this drama and at a point where I believe more time was needed for a good romance to be fully developed between him and Xueji.

He Zhen and Zhao Quan were engaging on their own, and their romance was charming when it aligned with the main plot. However, as their storyline diverged, it began to feel disconnected and unnecessary, leaving me questioning why so much screen time was dedicated to them when it no longer served the main narrative in a harmonious way.

My final verdict is that “Are you The One?” was able to leave a good impression and will probably stick with me for a while, as it was one of my favorite 2024 Dramas so far. It has its problems, some that could’ve been easily fixed, others not so much. In the end, however, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who’s thinking of giving it a go.

The most unique chemistry in enemies to lovers genre

I am here again because it is one of those rare dramas that have become my comfort drama. I don't generally rewatch dramas but this one is just so unique in chemistry.

The Female lead is GLORIOUS. She is sweet, understanding, empathetic and unconditionally supportive. But, she is also self respecting and righteous.

The male lead's dilemma and growth is what really got me hooked. He was fighting his emotions until he wasn't and that journey gave me butterflies in the stomach.

They make a solid couple in a plot that had a good understanding of what love truly means and how it wins all.

My only complaint is that they have added filler episodes. They could have reduced the number of episodes to make it more thrilling for the audience to see

Really good!

==Breakdown==
Background plot / palace intrigue - 50%
Romance - 30%
Misc comedy - 20%

Background plot - Good
Romantic chemistry - Excellent
Misc comedy - Good
Production value and direction - Good

Overall thoughts: This is my first drama with Zhang Wan Yi and my second with Wang Chu Ran. I *really* enjoyed Wang Chu Ran in Fireworks (with Yang Yang) and was excited to see her in a historical Cdrama. Zhang Wan Yi impressed me! He has such an interesting voice, I'm so glad he did his own dubbing as I think his inflections added a lot to the overall story.

Highly recommend for: Romance focused watchers in search of great chemistry paired with decent production values in a historical Cdrama.
