Cheng Yi delivers a career-defining performance as Li Lianhua — once a brilliant swordsman, now a wandering healer hiding his pain behind serenity. His portrayal is beautifully restrained; every look, every faint smile carries the weight of regret and the grace of forgiveness. Joseph Zeng as Fang Duobing brings youthful energy and idealism, perfectly complementing Cheng Yi’s stillness. Their dynamic — master and student, friends and foils — is one of the most endearing partnerships in recent wuxia storytelling.
The writing is poetic yet precise. Each case in the series feels like a parable — a reflection on loyalty, ambition, and the cost of obsession. The mystery elements are engaging, but it’s the emotional resonance that makes each resolution meaningful. The dialogue often reads like quiet philosophy disguised as conversation.
Visually, “Mysterious Lotus Casebook” is stunning. The cinematography captures both the grandeur of rivers and mountains and the intimacy of small human moments. The choreography is elegant rather than flashy — every sword fight feels like a dance between life and death.
What sets this drama apart is its soul. It teaches that true strength lies not in winning, but in understanding when to let go.
Subtle, soulful, and masterfully acted, “Mysterious Lotus Casebook” is a serene journey through pain, wisdom, and the enduring beauty of the human spirit.

Perfect blend of genres
My second ever review. Just for documentation. First of all undoubtedly a great drama, but I think I might not rewatch the drama because the unknown drives the story a lot. So knowing everything would definitely lessen my enjoyment of the show. Second are the characters. Jiao liqao was such a funny, annoying but funny and a great character to me. This character is a woman with a mission, her obsession was actually enjoyable, unlike Shan Gudao. This guy is such a weak villain for such a great story, it was so obvious after a while and his background as villain was similar to your regular joe who was jealous of someone, like he's similar to Zijin who was also jealous of Xangyi. I think the villain was just underwhelming. The best thing out of it is the emotional turmoil of Xangyi, and the continuation of the story without much plot holes. Other than that I enjoyed every other important characters, they were not one dimensional and felt like actual people whether bad or good. Really liked the hints of romance in the drama it adds a whole lot more to the story, especially the romance between Di feisheng and Jiao Liqao hahahahahah. The ending being open was definitely just sad. For me seeing him die or be alive or having a definite conclusion. Would make me happy even if the ending was sad. I mean Xangyi was just chill with dying, like let him rest if he wants to, but I also understand the want for him to live. I kinda wish that there was an alternate story where instead of shan gudao it was di feisheng who Xangyi trained with. The rivalry for the two would have been much more healthy and much more better, I say this because of the personality of Di Feisheng and obviously his talent in fighting. It's rare for me to want a different version of a drama, it's just that they could definitely change things up and it would still be an interesting drama. Will definitely miss this drama and I hope something like this would come up again. Was this review helpful to you?

I've waited patiently for this to dropp. And I'm not disappointed at all. I loved all the actors in it. They played their part really well. Of course I've mainly watched it for the three main characters...In my eyes it's nor a bromance so if you where hoping for that I'm sorry. All three of them are pretty close to each other.
It's more a detective kinda drama with slot of nice moves. The ending really killed me tho. I was holding my heart the whole episode :).
They didn't really stretched the series, where u would say 40 episodes is to much or too little.
I myself have problems finishing series because I know how most of them will end, after watching just 5 episodes. But I had to finish this one to keep my mind settled. Not because I could see through ot but because I got attached to the characters.
I highly recommend others to watch the series. Its also a good start for people that are new to historical cdrama's.
Also to be more familiarise with actors like Joseph Zeng.

best Summer Drama of 2023
Everything about this drama was good. I know down deep that there should have been more episodes but due to the rule of not having more than 40 episodes this drama could added more great things.every person delivered their roles right, so much Bromance and I love it. there’s no annoying female lead and we can watch an appropriate Wuxia for the longest. I’d wish there were more fighting scenes.
Cheng Yi plays a different character which amazes me. his acting is always improving every time he picks projects. hopefully the projects he picks keep getting better and better!!!
recommended to watch!!! must watch!!!!

One of the best drama ever made.
I have so much to say about this drama because it was that good. If I start ranting then it would coherent as I am overwhelmed with emotions. So let's just list 5 things why this was one of the best dramas every made and why you should not miss out on it!1)Storyline
There is a not a moment in this drama you would want to skip. I am a kind of person who is ten second jump watcher to keep the story going but once in a while I will find a gem like drama which captures me so much so that I don't skip a second. MLC has pace, intrigue, action, interesting characters, both good and bad. It feels like you are right there with characters solving the mysteries. And those epic reveals, twists and hero entries will make you yelp in delight. I promise some of the reveals will make your jaw drop.
2)Bromance/The trio
Cheng Yi is a superb actor. He shines in his role and thank the lords that we get to hear his og voice. He is amazing as Xangyi but even better as Lianhua. He is beautiful when he cries, stunning when he fights and witty we solves crimes. He is that character no one could hate. His sassy intelligent role is one of the smartest characters I have seen in C-Dramas. No one could have played this better than CY. You can going to feel every emotion our Lianhua will feel, trust me on that.
But we all know CY is great. What was incredible is Zeng made his mark with his strong presence. Now as much as I love CY, character wise, Duo Bing was my favorite character. He is smart, loyal, caring, upright and the best version of his talented master, Xangyi. His character growth is incredible and by the end of it you will realise he is worth all the good that comes his way. The chemistry between Master and Disciple is incredible, they bicker, solve crimes together and bicker more but when it comes to understanding, they understand each other better than a soulmate would.
And finally our Director Di. The way that guy cared for Li Xangyi was more than any male lead would care for his female lead. For him everyone could die except LX. And in the end it's clear it was not just the matter of battle or power position for him. He even warmed up to Duobing. I honestly cried at their friendship.
3)Intelligent characters
We don't have bumbling fools just for the sake of comedy or clumsy good guys who mistakenly put heros in danger. We have super smart characters who will look for evidence right and left and not just blindly believe everything. FDB, LLH and DFS are obviously the smartest but let me mention how incredible the princess is or FDB's whole family, even SuXiao who I was hoping could join the squad. Hats off to the vilains to who matched the intelligence level of good side though GuDao was super petty guy.
4)The cases
Let's just say they cases are incredibly interesting and LLH and FDB gives us all Sherlock/Watson vibes. The way they uncover the most paranormal case and make it make sense that it was indeed just normal will leave you in awe.
5)The fighting scenes
I need to highlight the battles scenes done impeccably. The Li Xangyi prowess era is so good to watch, but when LLH suddenly goes from being just a miracle physician to the man underneath the wits, that gets us hyped and cheering. Then there is FDB in second half of the show who is incredibly talented and his later fight scenes are incredible. I am so happy that LX left his legacy to a guy like him.
P.S. Do not come looking for romance or happy go lucky stuff. If you like a serious good watch with strong production, acting and story, this one is for you. And if you are Cheng Yi admirer like I am, his is INCREDIBLE in this! GO for it!

Dull. (still)
EDIT:I originally dropped this after 3 episodes. Now I've finished the whole show.
(I'm leaving my original review below the line)
What do I say about this? It's still not great.
It's definitely been overhyped and at best it's sort of slightly above average.
The story is functional - you see where it's going from the beginning and it does indeed get there pretty much as you expect. Which is not a bad thing necessarily, it's just a bit predictable.
The bits I enjoyed the most were the case investigations. Sadly, there are two issues with that:
1) The cases are of fluctuating quality, and many of them are solved in a way you cannot do yourself. Because as in other badly done mystery shows - the show witholds crucial information from you and it is only presented at the very end, when the detective is explaining how he figured it out. That's just lazy and uninteresting.
2) The show insists on being a wuxia story about Big Things, and it constantly gets in the way of the fun.
My main problem with this show and why I still rate it fairly low is the premise and the main protagonist.
I am sick, so sick and tired of these Very Special Boys With A Mysterious Past. Li Xiangyi is VERY similar to the characters in "Love in Between", "Blood of Youth" and even "Nirvana in Fire" and "Word of Honor" to some extent - a soft sickly boy with lovely long hair and flowy robe and a fur lined cloak. And he used to be a powerful martial hero, the most specialest of them all, a real genius. But now he's sickly and disabled and look at the poor bunny, so cute.
And I get that this is a trope that people (especially lady fans of these idols/actors) like. I do not. It's tired now. I've seen it.
I think the story would've worked much, much better with older characters and actors.
So yes - I still put a lot of fault with Cheng Yi. He is older than Joseph Zeng, but it doesn't feel like it. They're too close in age and vibe. And he doesn't have the acting ability to pull this kind of character off, especially in the really dramatic moments. His serious delivery feels fake and flat.
In short - the only way we know he's this super special boy is because everyone keeps talking about it. He doesn't have that kind of charisma to make me believe it.
Joseph Zeng is mostly fine, he does the same thing in most of the dramas I've seen him in. He's like an ok piece of toast. Nothing you'd sing the praises of, but fine to eat.
The villains are kinda terrible. I get that the mustache-twirling evil-laughing villain is a genre thing, but they feel a bit out of place in a modern style drama. That said, I think Rain Wang is just bad, and she wasn't helped by the weird dubbing they did for her character.
The only person whose acting I enjoyed fully was Xiao Shun Yao - his Di Feisheng doesn't change a lot, but he pulls that subtle transition off pretty well. And at all times he FEELS like someone who could seriously hurt people, I believe when he fights.
Speaking of fights - they left them all for the ending, which was odd. They're...fine I guess. The bigger mass battles were a surprise, because the show had been so stingy with fights up to that point. They're all very modern wuxia cdrama in style - lots of flowy stuff, CG energy blasts and not a lot of blood. Compared to something like Sakra, or oldschool 90s wuxia it feels super sanitized. I wasn't impressed, but it wasn't offensively bad either.
In summary - this is a very run of the mill modern wuxia with all the typical flaws, or a mostly decent detective show ruined by also being a modern wuxia drama.
Don't believe the hype, but you might still enjoy some of it.

Original rating: 3.5*
This is dull, incredibly dull. Just boring as hell.
I have to remind myself that cdrama hype is largely caused by fangirls looking forward to watching shows with their beloved idol/s.
Some episodes in this is just incredibly forgettable, entirely derivative and uninteresting.
The actors are bland as chalk bread, except for the main guy who's straight up bad. He's a bad actor, stop giving him roles where he's supposed to speak.
The premise, the story, it's all cliches piled on cliches, nothing cool or intriguing happens, the fights are not entertaining.
Just another super mediocre/bad wuxia drama.

Average but charming
It's a good series to watch if you aren't looking for anything that can cause lack of sleep due to wanting to get to the next episode. Having recently getting back into the Asian series mode, I was super excited to see a new Wuxia series with high ratings. However, the series has the same flaws as with many others. The acting of the main protagonists are just slightly less than average and the only saving grace is they have some chemistry with each other. It feels like actors these days are chosen based on looks and less on their ability to act and draw the audience in. The actions scenes were below average and it made me miss again the days when actors with some actual martial arts skills were chosen for these types of roles. The plot had potential but the transitions were choppy.I did appreciate that the historical costume and makeup weren't as ridiculous as some other series, and nothing was too overly dramatized. And despite it being an overall average, it was still entertaining enough to finish.

Overhyped
We have the typical hyper-competent lead with no real flaws, who somehow still gets deceived by his senior and, surprise… dies in the end. His supposed character development mostly happened off-screen. LXY repeatedly claimed that he wasn’t the same person anymore, but I honestly didn’t see any real change. I don’t understand why the writers expected viewers to root for a protagonist whose growth they never actually showed. As a result, he was very boring to me.FDB was a cute character, but the lack of balance in his dynamic with LXY made their interactions feel flat. Their relationship was fine, just nothing memorable. And the fact that FDB got deceived by LXY more than half of the time didn’t help.
The villains were one-dimensional, and for some reason the show thought inserting an evil laugh at every turn was a good idea. After a while, it became unintentionally funny instead of threatening.
I liked DFS, but he also suffered from being written as another one-dimensional character.
The core concept wasn’t new, just a detective story, yet after three cases it became very repetitive. The writers used the same formula over and over again, and by episode 30 the story already felt complete. The pacing was draggy, and there wasn’t much narrative payoff for sticking with it.
Overall, I didn’t feel that any of the characters went through meaningful development. They simply weren’t flawed enough for growth, which again made them feel one-dimensional.
To be fair, the cases themselves were initially clever and fun, but that enjoyment faded once the structure repeated too often.
The ending didn’t leave any emotional impact on me either.
The OSTs were fine but forgettable, though I will say the cinematography was gorgeous.
All in all, a pretty disappointing watch for me, especially considering how much hype surrounded it.

Great acting and story plot
The way the actors acted it was really nice to watch ...no over acting cringe moves was seen .. the twist in story was so exciting .. the way li lianhua acted was the best like even though in his health condition he remains calm and those sad regreted moments like the way he cries ..my god i cried along with him those tears of regret was not a joke to act ... he was the best..and the relationship among those three main lead was to notchWas this review helpful to you?
Wow
I'm usually really bad at finishing dramas because they're just so long, but this one held my interest through all 40 episodes. I finished this drama in six days, which is definitely a record for me, and I loved every minute of it. The characters and their dynamics are compelling and each of the cases are interesting and fun to watch. Not a romance, which was fine by me as the platonic relationships between all of the characters were perhaps more compelling than they would have been had it been romantic. Non-stop action with light-hearted moments sprinkled in between made it perfect, and the satisfying ending for all of the antagonists was the cherry on top. The ending of episode 40 was a little disappointing, but immediately following that with the special episode changed my mind completely, and I actually really like the ending. It's only been a day since I finished watching, but I already miss the main trio so much...Was this review helpful to you?

One of the best
Taking away that shitty albeit poetical ending this was a perfect 10 drama for me. Not enough words to say how good was the acting and how beautiful the bromance. Or bromances, because DiF was amazing too, although for me FD and LX were simply soulmates. And I loved LX but my heart absolutely melted for FD and his fierce love and dedication to LX . He fought so hard for him ,struggled, cried and pleaded for him to live , I cried buckets, not because LX died (we had 40 episodes to get used to it) but because of FD’s pain and heartbreak. He gave us moments more beautiful than any BL out there. The way he cared for LX ..gaaaah, I feel like crying again.. All the characters were interesting and complex and and I especially loved the cases they investigated together. The 3 male main leads were absolutely fabulous and the villains very…villainy . Excellent piece of Chinese cinematography. Was this review helpful to you?

A Mixture of Action, Thriller, Mystery, and Investigation
In my opinion, this is, perhaps, the best wuxia drama throughout the world of c-drama. This is also the second Cheng Yi's project that I've ever watched after got hooked up by 'Love and Redemption'.The plot is craved perfectly and executed well. There is no single filler in every scene. The actions are... WOW!!! If you tread the story carefully, you can see that every case intertwines with one another - from trivial small cases to important great cases. In the end of the show, there is a little twist and turn which will determine the ultimate villain and the main lead (Li Xiangyi) real identity. I'm impressed at how the main leads try to solve the cases even though each case is a bit illogical in modern times (maybe people at those times believe more in superstition). I even paused for a little while to figure out how to solve the cases, but ended up being puzzled. If you just want to enjoy the show, you can ignore those illogical stuffs and keep going on. Anyway, it won't deflect you from watching this masterpiece.
We have 3 main leads (Li Xiangyi aka Li Lianhua, Fang Duobing, and Di Feisheng) with different personalities and styles. So it's no wonder why they always bickering. Previously, Li Xiangyi was an arrogant and selfish boy with great martial arts skills, who only wanted to be the best in the martial arts world and never cared how other felt towards him which would lead his friends distrust him. However, he still had a good side of him which was being wise when making decisions. Now living in Li Lianhua's persona, he has turned into a sly old fox (as how Fang Duobing branded him) and become more deceitful. No matter how deceitful and sly he was, he just wanted to live a good life in his remainder days (this is the reason why he decided to leave the martial arts world for good). Cheng Yi once again showed off his cool acting skills and he really is a versatile one, showing ranges of emotions in every scene.
Fang Duobing was a young master of Tianji Manor. He was a typical spoiled little brat who recently ventured into the vast world. He trusted people too easily which got him into troubles many times. As the show progress, he started becoming mature and make a skillful detective in Baichuan Court. Joseph Zeng nailed his role quite well and his baby face fitted his character as well.
Di Feisheng is Li Xiangyi's arch nemesis. After Li Xiangyi's downfall, he began to investigate this case secretly and found out that Li Xiangyi was still alive. His purpose of living was to have another duel with him. Di Feisheng might not be your typical antagonist, although he was considered as the king of demon in Jinyuan Alliance, he still had a kind personality beneath. Xiao Shunyao did well in here and I'm impressed by his portrayal of Di Feisheng.
How about the rewatch value? Of course, it's going to be a high one. So far, I've rewatched 3 times and I still can't move on from this show. The ending is either a happy or a sad one - I don't want Li Lianhua to die just yet so let's just say he has now lived in a secluded life and is now enjoying his days (I feel sorry for his 2 friends, I wish they could be together and reunite once more).
Don't hesitate to watch this masterpiece. You won't regret your time. I guarantee you, soooner or later, you will be captivated by the engaging plot. Happy watching!!!!
