One of my favorites
Ok, first of all- there’s eye candy everywhere! I am really enjoying that part. Ml is fantastic and I’m highly impressed with his ability to jump between his different roles. (Even more so when said jumping involves losing his shirt, but still.) Side characters are also very easy to watch. Fl is cute, intelligent and kind. It seems really difficult to find shows where the fl is so well balanced, but this show does it well. The actress is a little too delicate to convincingly portray a bad ass general, but at least she’s not hyperextending her arms every time she tries to pick up a sword. Overall, she does well. Chemistry with the ml is on point. 🔥The side characters are great, they add a lot to the show. Love the 2nd in command and the female doctor. The newly introduced coachman and the strong woman look promising, as well. Again- lots of eye candy! But also entertaining and they add some fun to the story. It’s interesting to see that both kingdoms are being led by someone evil or incompetent. Probably an indication they’ll be replaced by our more beloved main characters.
I like that’s it’s a different story line instead of one that’s been done 10 times in the past couple of years. And I love the action scenes where he has his super powers. That’s not usually a draw for me on these shows, but I have been enthralled by them here. Both the actor and the special effects are amazing. The incredible music may play a big role in that. Did I mention the music? Absolutely phenomenal!
I’m hooked and hope it continues to play as well as it has started.
Update: I’ve finished it and I’m in awe. I won’t give anything away, but have tissues at the end - for laughter and pain. It took me on a rollercoaster ride through all of my emotions. The ending was so awesome! This is now included in my favorite series of all time. Love the way all of the guys grew into such lovable, protective and endearing men. I really don’t know why the rating isn’t higher. This was done so very well.

exceeded expectations
Why I started this drama...I started this show with low expectations. I wasn't a fan of the main leads, and the cover photo + intro sounded cheesy....
Also, I did not enjoy the life of the general's daughter that was playing slightly before with the same main actor and a story of a general woman.... LOGD seemed shallow....so I was skeptical about this one too!!! however, shadow love's story sounded a bit original and the comments here encouraged me to start!
-Characters:
strong & real FL characters are hard to portray in dramas, they are rare but I think this show hit the mark. Not only did they hit the mark for the general Shuang, but also for the ML Janan/ Annan who was brillantly portrayed too.
Also, this is a show that really puts the ML and FL on the spot with their acting, I am glad they were on a production team where their chemistry, lines, expressions, development... all lined perfectly for a great result. ML had a really challenging role as there is the infamous "memory loss" trope, but he did it flawlessly!! i think this show is among the ones that played amnesia best!! well done!
all characters were very wholesome, bold, raw , credible and well played! (even the villains! ) and for me it's often a winning formula.
-Storyline:
the story moved fast in the first episodes but then it slows A LOT. it's in this big lump that character development happens. so I can't complain!! this show did not skip on showing the scenes that matter, unlike other shows who only tell or skip the little elements that truly make a story "genuine" "believable" and help us connect with the storyline.
I loved the incorporation of magic that was not over the top. just enough. I loved that we weren't given the clues of how that magic works and that it doesn't make the center of the story as much as we'd expect iitially. Which is great because sometimes obsessing with the magic rules/problem often ruins a story and makes it too melodramatic.... so points for making a great balance on that! Also, it wasn't a story that was meant to be tooo complicated, just enough. it was mostly a love story, and the title is brutally honest.
this story doesn't feel rushed, but I did feel like most episodes were like an epilogue and the main story actually happens in the last 10 episodes.
-Production:
While some scenes have very minor execution discrepancies, the actual execution of the story, script, costumes, lighting, etc... was well done. it shows that the production team had fun making this drama. special kudos to the music ( while sometimes it was a bit much, i really enjoyed the electrifying beat that matched the character's energy!)
It's one of these stories where i will miss seeing these characters interact with each other in the most wholesome way. even for the most mundane things!

Nice drma
“Shadow Love” is a drama that completely exceeded my expectations and left me deeply impressed in every way. From the very first episode, it draws you into its mysterious yet emotional storyline, balancing romance, suspense, and heartfelt character growth with remarkable finesse. The **story** deserves a full **10/10**. It is beautifully written, with a perfect mix of tension and tenderness. The narrative keeps you guessing, yet it never loses its emotional depth. Each twist feels purposeful, and the way the relationships develop makes you invested in the characters’ journeys. It’s rare to find a drama that blends suspense and romance so seamlessly, but “Shadow Love” does it brilliantly.
The **acting** is also an easy **10/10**. Every performance is natural, powerful, and moving. The leads display undeniable chemistry, bringing out both the vulnerability and strength in their roles. Supporting characters also shine, adding richness to the world of the drama. What stands out most is how the actors portray subtle emotions—sometimes a glance or silence carries as much weight as words. It makes the entire viewing experience feel authentic and immersive.
In terms of **rewatch value**, this drama also earns a **10/10**. The layered storytelling and strong performances make it worth revisiting multiple times. Every rewatch reveals something new—whether it’s a hidden detail in the dialogue, foreshadowing of future events, or simply appreciating the cast’s chemistry once again.
Overall, “Shadow Love” is not just a drama; it’s an experience. With its perfect balance of story, acting, and emotional impact, it earns a flawless score. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a drama that stays with you long after it ends.
**Final Rating: 10/10**

Three Roles, One Actor - Cheng Lei’s Masterclass in Shadow Love
I just finished Shadow Love starring Cheng Lei and Song Yi and I loved it!! It has a happy ending too!Basically, the story is about a female general who falls in love with the male general of her enemy state. The twist? The ML loses his memory, so he doesn’t know who he really is, and the FL also has no idea of his true identity.
Later on, the ML regains his memory but loses all memories of his time with the FL. That’s when they go back to being enemies. Eventually, he remembers everything, and the two of them are reunited.
I really enjoyed the storyline and plot. The pacing in the middle episodes was a bit slow, but don’t worry, hang in there, because from episode 28 the plot regains its suspense and becomes much more engaging. For me, the intensity lies in the early episodes and the final arc, while the middle part is slower, probably to build the characters and their relationships.
What stood out to me the most was Cheng Lei’s performance. He basically carried three roles in one drama:
• Prince Annan (General of Yao State): cold, proud, and intimidating (and his face fits this vibe perfectly. I loved it). His authoritative voice when giving orders honestly gave me goosebumps. He truly embodied the commanding presence of a general.
• Jin An: the version of him with amnesia, playful, sweet, and affectionate.
• The Man in Black: insanely powerful, almost otherworldly.
He pulled off all three roles convincingly, but my personal favorite is definitely Prince Annan. That authority in his tone made the character terrifyingly believable.
As for the FL, I loved her portrayal too. She was strong, badass, and extremely protective of Jin An. What I found beautiful is that she fell in love with him when he was weak and powerless, which made her feelings pure and unconditional. She stood by him no matter what. Meanwhile, Jin An (and later the Man in Black) was fully devoted to her, even willing to sacrifice his life for her. Their relationship was so dynamic, intense, and full of mutual devotion, exactly the kind of romance I adore.
The visuals and battle scenes were another highlight for me. They were stunning and really added to the epic feel of the story.
Overall, Shadow Love had everything I enjoy. Strong leads, emotional depth, and breathtaking visuals. Absolutely loved it!

Brilliant drama!!
I really enjoyed watching this drama. The plot was totally new with the male lead showcasing 3 roles as Jin'an, Prince Annan and Xuanyike(Man in black) and Cheng Lei , effortlessly played the 3 characters perfectly. He was Outstanding in his performance💯and had a good chemistry with Song Yi, who played Li Shuang, the female general of Taijin.
Song Yi's acting was also excellent.
I liked the characters of Lu Xin and Mo yin too. Shi Ce and Darren Chen were perfect in their roles.
Bi Wenjun excelled as Su Muyang and all the other actors were excellent!!
The plot, music, screenplay, pacing, costumes, locations, special effects, everything were good👍
The fight scenes were good, especially when the man in black appeared.
Finally, though there may be few flaws and few boring moments/episodes, but still it is a WORTH WATCHING DRAMA, which made me feel anxious sometimes and kept me on the edge of my seat for few episodes.
A perfect emotional, romance, fantasy drama 👌🤗

It’s Zorro on steroids
I really wanted to like this Chinese drama, after all you have to strong lead actors and great supporting actors as well. My issue is the storyline and timeline itself. Sometimes I watch a show and feel like they need to add more episode but in the case of Shadow Love, they could have cut it short. The show started very well with a fine balance of action, love and tension, but as the show moved on, several episode was unnecessary in my opinion and just cut short. It’s like watching tending where the top notch athletes kept lobbing the ball waiting for who will hit the ball hard and end the match. This lack of continuity as the relationships evolve is so disruptive in the flow. And what about them weak and lame emperors. Basically the story talks about two strong characters and everyone around them is weak, unable to make a strong sustainable action. The production at times was good and most of the times was poorly done. Unlike the Guardians of. Dafeng, Shadow Love looked cheap. In costumes and an unconvincing masked outfit. Yes, you can recognize who is behind the masked zorro in this show. Maybe I can’t help but compare all the other beautifully produced shows, it just doesn’t cut it for me.

An intense love - A lasting impression
Though I don't always want to write a review, I feel I can get a better closure after putting my feelings into words. And with this one I definitely need a better closure, because right now I can't let go and I don't feel like starting a new C-drama right away. This drama and its characters consumed me quite a lot.The acting of both leads were superb. And as a little bonus you get this little guy (Chen Yu Zhe) who plays the child version of the ML. He was awesome but sadly only appeared in the first two episodes. He stole my heart in the blink of an eye.
Next to multi-layered and well written characters, one of the drama's biggest strengths is the unobtrusive yet unknowingly fast way the main characters develop their strong bond between each other during the first half of the story. Their raw and genuine feelings, their deep affection that runs deeper and deeper the further the story went, the constant shifting between submission and dominance yet always in balance, the trust and responsibility they shared even though there were unknown secrets in the background. I felt deeply touched by their emotions, their support and their sacrifices. They created an intense base for the main plot's later twists and heartbreaks.
Amnesia was of course a big part of the game here. Without it the drama wouldn't have worked. It was well placed and I was quite satisfied, how they balanced and played out the differences in the ML's attitude without changing his core character treats. That way they were able to prevent going beyond reconciliation during the later events and assured the ML remaining in-character.
I admit that even though the calmer and peaceful parts of the story were important as well for character growth, I started to become a bit impatient now and then during those times. And I also thought that they could have put more short scenes of the second kingdom's hidden agenda in between instead of not mentioning it at all for a long period of episodes.
The sidecast was somewhat mainstream but all of them were still entertaining and carved their way into my heart as well. I was especially touched by the ML's growing affection for his new friends even though it didn't always seem that way for the other part. And I was pleasantly surprised that the SFL wasn't hung up by her first love's interest but actually moved on and found happiness. I particularly enjoyed her interactions with Mo Yin.
A nice add-on was the CGI, that was well used here. You know that make-up they always put on the ML when he transforms in dramas? Usually you see that it's just painting on skin. But this time they amplified those skin-changes with well done glowing effects that boosted the make up's purpose.
I probably forgot some things to mention but I also think that everyone needs to make their own experiences with this gem. A well deserved 10 for me.

A love story and a man every woman dreams of having
Shadow Love is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those who like romance and fantasy.I will be focusing my review on three aspects of the drama: the female lead, male lead and the chemistry since this is romance heavy drama.
Cheng Lei as Jin An, Duan Ao Deng.
This is my first drama of Cheng Lei and this drama has converted me into a fan of his. He slayed his roles as Jin An, Duan Ao Deng and the man in the black. He has expressive beautiful eyes which he uses fully to his advantage to convey wide range of emotions. His acting was excellent 😙. His micro expressions were sooooo good and they made me believe in his love for Li Shuang. The way he stares at Li Shuang melted my heart every single time without fail.
His character as Jin An is the greenest C-drama male lead. He’s attentive, caring, funny, intelligent and physically attractive. I appreciate the drama showed how he made friends with the female lead’s friends and confided in them. This is so refreshing to experience.
As Duan Ao Deng, HE IS HOT AND SEXY!!!! 🥵🥵🥵
He exudes alpha male energy and commands the room the moment he walks in it, yet at the same time he’s so soft and submissive to the female lead despite him losing his memory of her and supposedly hating her. At the end of the day, the heart knows what it wants.
Man in the black - the superhero who always saves the day for the female lead.
Can you imagine what you will get when these three characters merged into one? It’s a perfect LOVER, every woman is dreaming of having!! Hot, Sexy, Caring, Funny, Intelligent, Attentive, Always there when you need him, Strong on the outside but soft and submissive on the inside when he’s with you!
I would like to believe that most of the female audience imagine ourselves as Li Shuang at one point. Myself included, of course!
Song Yi as Li Shuang
I watched a few of Song Yi’s dramas in the past but couldn’t really recall what’s her acting was like.
Some might have doubted whether her physique fits into a characterisation of a female general. I could see where people were coming from. Having said that I would say her portrayal as a female general who despises wars was spot on. She brought humility to the role. Her crying scenes made to cry with her, you felt the emotions she felt. I couldn’t imagine anyone else play Li Shuang’s role and achieve the level of chemistry he has with Cheng Lei.
Chemistry:
OH MAN! The chemistry is EXPLOSIVE between the leads, it is honestly one of the best parts of this drama. The drama spends 30 episodes to build the main leads love story which I appreciate. The chemistry is built through quiet glances, act of service, and the little ways they start to care for each other. There’s always this underlying tension when they’re both on the screen. It’s emotional, not just romantic or physical — which makes it feel so much deeper.
There’s this constant pull between them, even when Duan Ao Deng forgets his love for Li Shuang.
Like the way he instinctively gives her candies, helps her fix the rooftop and agrees to whatever she requested. You can feel him falling in love with her all over again.
Ending:
It’s satisfyingly no rush happy ending. The only complaint that I have was the drama didn’t show them having kids!
All in all, this is a highly recommended drama for those who like beautiful romance story.

Buy 1 get 2 FREE! (I want them all)
This drama adaption took the novel and made it better imo, it has more depth to the characters relationships, have more of a cast + their development arcs while not cutting off the novel’s main plot lines. The show shines in its costumes (very important as it easily shows the significant distinctions from all 3 personas of the main lead), fight set pieces (we literally have a vampire superhero with magical super strength & healing) & good balance between funny, emotional & serious scenes. This definitely can be considered as Cheng Lei’s best work, all his personas are so different, just his gaze can make even a random person watching know which character he is. I know he worked really hard on his body for Xuan Yike’s scenes and it’s so so worth it! He had such great chemistry with every character, especially his girl besties Qiao & LuXin, LiTing & MoYin, even his love rival MuYang. Song Yi I think shone best in emotional scenes but her fight choreo was good as well. I think she got a brunt of criticism due to archery logically not being very General-esque style. People think she should be more manly/brolic but they heavily implied that she’s more strategic leader & never had a manly look even in the books. She’s always wanted to be feminine, but never had the opportunity or felt like she could. A very effeminate General is something we need, not just tomboyish ones. Also, her personal female army was so good & diverse.
Something positive can be negative as I really thought the drama did well by adding scenes to develop Jin’an & Shuang’s romantic relationship. But I think they spent a little too long on it (maybe 1-2 epis). They kept “telling” us about Shuang’s problems of being beholden to her adoptive family rather than showing us. But the story really got going after Jin’an remembered his true identity of Prince Aodeng. The angst part at the end & the funny shenanigans at the start are the best parts of the show. You can taste a variety of flavours of tropes and makes me want to rewatch it all!

A Romance that truly resonates
Not sure if this is an unpopular comment, but I actually like Shadow Love more than Legend of Female General. The male lead’s character here has more depth and emotion, and the overall story feels smoother with fewer plot holes. I also loved how the romance blends naturally with the fantasy and political intrigue, while Li Shuang as the female general comes across as strong yet still human and relatable. The production is gorgeous too — the costumes, sets, and atmosphere really pulled me in.The chemistry between the leads felt genuine, and the way their relationship developed made me care deeply about their struggles and heartbreak. It’s not a light or fluffy romance, but that’s exactly what made it memorable for me. Shadow Love might not be perfect, but it definitely left me with a stronger impression and more emotions to hold onto.
