Wow just wow. Easily best drama this year ! Strong female lead that is actually strong and competent and doesn't need constant saving , AMAZING chemistry between the leads that comes so natural as if they are meant to be, and the finale being them enemies to lover. This drama is giving everything !! Its a drama i will rematch and rematch in the future. Pleasant surprise and so well excuted my favorite scene is when they part ways due their unavoidable circumstances and i felt every bit of heartbreak in this scene and the ml yearning for the fl . such a great escapism dramaWas this review helpful to you?

Solid Acting, Strong Start, But Too Many Cliches and Bad Storytelling
This had a strong start, and made me have a more positive view of Cheng Lei (I am now more inclined to watch anything that he's in), but it got annoying enough that I had to drop it for several reasons:1. Amnesia for too long
- By the end of episode 23, there is still 0 sign of the ML retrieving any of his memories. Am I really supposed to see all his character development, and all the CP's relationship development, occur while he's living a lie?
2. Too much fluffy, G-rated flirting and cliche romance scenes
- They really put every cliche flirting and dating scene in here - we got festivals, fireworks, shooting stars, embracing under the moon, gifting a hair pin, drunken confessions/kisses, blah blah blah. And when he's not acting jealous or possessive he's always just hugging her - and that's it. Like really?? You are both 2 grown adults in a society where people marry so quickly that they don't even bother to meet face to face before the wedding, and here you are prolonging courtship with no desire to seal the deal? Promise marriage? Make plans for the future? I am unconvinced that you are not a couple 8 year olds in a grown person's body.
3. The "couple gets together just for one of them to die" cliche
- I was honestly pleasantly surprised that Qiao's character got such a quick back story, love confession, and solidified DTR so early on in the series. I should've known that this was only because she needed to be killed off soon as a plot catalyst, so they had to accelerate this couple's timeline for dramatic effect. But this cliche happens far too often, a side character finally finds their OTP, only for them to die right before they can get their happily ever after.
4. Bad guys are just archetypes with no depth/regard for human life + clear disqualifications for becoming monarchs
- The SML's older brother is blatantly evil and unfit to be a prince (or the King, as he is aspiring to be). He literally steps on other humans (even his brother, the Crown Prince) for use as step tools, he openly threatens, harasses, and extorts the FL and others, throwing his weight around and abusing his power. Anyone who actually behaved like that could not expect to become a monarch in China without facing a total mutiny and hostile takeover immediately within the first couple years of their reign. I find this to be the part of Chinese period/costume dramas that are one of their biggest weaknesses - poor, one-dimensional villain writing. Every villain is either cartoonishly evil the whole time, or they are constantly battling between being good or being evil, and that is the only thing keeping them from being so unreasonably evil throughout the whole series. They don't know how to execute a villain who is consistently evil, true to their character, yet subtle about it. Subtle in a way that would still allow them to function and have power in a logical society. An example of this would be the villain in the K-drama "My Love From the Star", the bad guy is bad news from the start - like murderously bad, sociopathically bad - but he doesn't blatantly behave in a way that would make you question how he has any followers, any social power, and is not reasonably detained at all times.
5. SML setup to have a villain arc due to misunderstandings
- I'm dropping it at episode 23 so I don't know if the SML does truly turn bad and partner with the enemy, but the writing is on the wall. Just at the right moment when the SML mistakenly thinks the FL has betrayed him, the enemy propositions him with an offer her can't refuse. I thought they might have actually gone in a good direction with the SML, after seeing him take on the ML as his tutor on "how to be a Crown Prince" and them building a friendship and brotherly bond through that. I hoped that maybe the FL/M/SML could end on friendly terms, supporting each other and having each other's back in this politically scheming world. But of course, in C-dramaland a little misunderstanding, lack of communication, and some exacerbated resentment over not getting the girl you love, is enough fodder to fuel a villain arc that is worse than any other villain we've seen in the story thus far.
6. Unrealistic life of a Female General
- Sure, you can convince me that there may be female militia in this fictionalized yet still highly patriarchal world. But wait, you expect me to believe that they live in a world where there is only one female soldier in the army as far as far as the eye can see, and not only is she not harassed or bullied or unaccepted, but she is elevated to the highest position in the military as the General, every man in the military takes order from her, and there are no complaints but instead undying loyalty and submission? Anomaly of anomalies, how am I supposed to digest this without batting an eye and assume this is normal circumstances and not just plot armor that completely spits in the face of consistency?
7. Choppy editing, and storytelling
- There were several scenes that seemed to come literally out of nowhere with no explanation or context, that had me as a viewer questioning if I accidentally skipped something, or jumped ahead in the episode. One example is when we are in a scene with the FL and ML, and when it ends with just jump to a scene where we are in the military camp and there is a bunch of chaos and running around and a bloodied guy being dragged off after interrogation, and then in the midst of the chaos a few spies sneak into a room to steal a map. And this is so early in the show that you can't immediately recognize the face of the guy being dragged away, or the layout of the military camp, and most of the actors in the scenes are extras, so it has you thinking "where exactly are we, and why did this happen"? Scenes later, you get a flashback of the FL telling her soldiers a master plan she had to trap the spies in her camp by causing fake chaos and asking one of her right hand men to pretend that he was beaten up on suspicion of collusion. But this should not have been shown as a flashback, this scene literally should've jsut taken place before the military camp chaos scene. Because there was no build up to it, it's not like they had been talking about rooting out the spies right before the scene, it was very out of nowhere, and having the plan revealed later added nothing to the plot. It was just bad storytelling and terrible scene transitions. There was another scene later on when the SFL's clinic gets burned down, and she is morning her assistant for a couple episodes, but they cram all of the assistant's scenes into flashbacks at the scene at the fire after he is already dead. The audience had no relationship with him whatsoever but it seemed like the writers realized to late that they needed to give context as to why we should care about his passing, so they crammed every line of dialogue and fond moment with him into all the SFL's memories in a single scene. Overall, the screenwriter does not seem to think through the storytelling cohesively, going from one major plot point to the next without setting up the entire story as a whole to corroborate what's going on at each moment, and the entire production suffers because of it.

Paper-Thin Fantasy, Endless Abs, Zero Substance
ML is a hero blood-bound puppet who survives thanks to the female lead’s conveniently available veins. Meanwhile, she’s supposedly a general… though you’d never guess it from her flat delivery and total lack of commanding presence.The plot manages to be both paper-thin stuffed with banal conversations and scenes so empty I fast-forwarded through seven episodes without missing a thing. His bare chest gets more screen time than actual character development.
The romance has no depth. The soundtrack? Dreadful. A lightly dark fantasy is a teen-targeted fanservice parade. I barely survived seven episodes before mercy-dropping it.

The Boredom Takes Over
So… I’m officially dropping this drama. Don’t curse me yet—hear me out first. I’m dropping this not because I haven’t moved on from LOTFG (Cheng Lei’s other drama), but simply because I don’t get the hype. Watching this feels like forcing myself to do something I don’t actually want to do.When the first episode came out, I immediately hit play—and just a few minutes in, I already knew this wasn’t for me. Still, I kept watching, hoping it would get better, but instead, it just got more boring. It’s a unique drama, sure, but I honestly don’t know why I couldn’t enjoy it. Maybe it’s intuition. I did manage to push myself to episode 10, but let’s be real—on the first day, I only finished 2 episodes, even though I had time to watch more. That alone was already a sign I wasn’t into it.
Now about the female general—don’t hate me for this—but she’s been trained since childhood, yet if Jin’an wasn’t around, she would’ve been dead already. And yes, I get it, people will say “bro, she’s a human being, flaws are normal”—and that’s true. But here’s the thing: the way they placed those flaws was the problem. If you make the FL helpless from episodes 1–6, it leaves a bad impression. Flaws aren’t bad, but they need to be balanced and placed properly in the story.
And that 30 lashes scene? I was honestly confused why she didn’t just say the word earlier to escape it. It made her look worse for no reason.
Overall, the real killer here was boredom. Same reason I dropped Moonlit Reunion—the only difference is that there, I didn’t have issues with the characters. Here? I just don’t vibe with Li Shuang (no offense to Song Yi, don’t get me wrong).

Great drama
This show completely exceeded my expectations. The acting was very good and the leads made the romance feel authentic and engaging. The male lead’s interpretation of different roles was impressive — each one distinct yet connected in a way that deepened the story.The scenography and costume design were both top-notch, creating a beautiful and immersive world that perfectly supported the narrative. The pacing and transitions of the story were good .
The script was written by Jiu Lu Fei Xiang, the same talented author behind Love Between Fairy and Devil, Back From the Brink, and The Legend of Shen Li. It’s amazing how much emotional depth and world-building she brings to every project — and even more impressive considering she’s only 33 years old!
A special mention must go to the soundtrack — the OST is absolutely stunning (I’m still listening to it even now!).
I also found the ending quite adequate and satisfying. My only small regret is that I would have loved to see more interaction between the female and male leads after he regained his memories as the prince. Still, that’s just a minor wish in an otherwise fantastic drama.
Overall, this is a beautifully made show with strong performances, great costume design, and a memorable soundtrack. Definitely recommend!

Engaging Romance with Draggy Pacing in the Second Half
This is the kind of C-drama I love.It’s got all the favorite tropes I enjoy. Hidden identity. Amnesia. Enemies to lovers. Male lead of everyone’s dream. And just enough fantasy elements to make it feel mysterious but not as overly complicated as some of the xianxias out there.
The leads had great chemistry. The romance was awesome.
Of course it’s not a perfect drama. And I think for the first 20 episodes it was a perfect 10. It was all about the main couple and the pace was great. I don’t think I skipped a single secon. Then the pacing of the show slowed down a lot and I started skipping some of scenes just to get through the lengthy unnecessary dialogues. If they kept the editing in the second part of the drama the way they kept it in the first part of the show, mostly concentrating on the leads and with little attention on the rest of the supporting characters, it would have been perfect. Or they should have given that time to our lead couple on the later end of the show because the amnesia plot in my opinion should have been resolved midpoint.
I don’t know what kind of budget this drama had, but some CGI backgrounds were not that great and you can totally see it. However, the overall story was still very good. And I am glad they didn’t end the drama the way Till the End of the Moon ended or some other of my favorites with fantasy elements. Shadow Love had a perfect happy ending.
I liked most character arcs and the way everyone’s story ended. I would have probably rewatched it again if not for the really draggy second part. Maybe I’ll come back and rewatch my favorite parts later on.
Side note: Ryan Chen should have stayed in Prince Annan’s headspace more. Guy had some aura. This is what I meant by removing some of the unnecessary dialogues or simply cutting those scenes in giving that screen time to lead couple so we could see them reconciling and reconnecting for a slightly longer period of time because I think that would have been very satisfying, considering how much history they had. But I obviously understand the direction of the story was completely different. And we didn’t get much of Prince Annan because he was never going to last.
Overall, I recommend this to those looking for solid romance and loves historical dramas with not so heavy xianxia elements. And just keep the unnecessary scenes when you get to the second half and you will enjoy it. I think as far as 2025 goals this is probably in my top five.

A comment about the music
there are enough comments about the stroy and acting but ...what was with the music? for example in the funeral scene in the last episode! it suddenly took me from ancient china to a modern disco . I mean... I know music with beats and some newer styles are the trend but that doesn't mean it fits every movie or scene!!!

Superb love story
Absolutely loved this drama from beginning to end. Never a dull moment and loved every character. Chen Lei is phenomenal and brings it in every way. He is soft and sweet and yet still brings the amazing hard core side as well. He has an amazing range. The FL I didn’t start off loving but she grew on me as it went on. By the end I totally loved her. The whole story came along nicely and had some great plot moments that had me gasping and screaming at the screen. Gotta love that! It hit all the great emotions. It didn’t have any ridiculous plot holes or frustrations that make you overly mad. This was definitely a great watch.Was this review helpful to you?
Another disappointing general for Ryan Cheng
Another great story and cast ruined by horrendous acting of the female general. In both legend of the female general and here in shadow love - wrong casting, bad acting..I am sorry but generals do not act that way:- you go into battle without a sword?
- unable to do minimal strategy? Freeze?
- wilting flower tactics? Really?
- wearing diamonds in a military camp?
- adolescent temper tantrums .. in a general?
- you want world peace but you immediately threaten a child with a sword?
- I see the obsession with ultra thin/ borderline anoerexic female actresses but doesn’t the director think it might be stretching it that the sword itself is almost as heavy as the woman?
And legions of men, warriors respect this and follow into war?
The rest of the cast are great. But this actress in shadow love and the one in female general are beyond disappointing.
These show are fantastically written- I love that we are seeing women as generals and leading armies - but can we make it at least believable?
Or is it on purpose? These actresses play generals that are not believable so we are subconsciously told that a female general could never happen…

Another C-drama without substance
I watched 6 episodes, then i took a break, then to day i tried to watch episode 7, but i can't so i decided to drop for good.There are (in my point of view) honest a lot of C-drama without substance but with famous actors/actresses. Shadow Love is unfortunately and simply one of them.
It i such a great pity that Song Yi played a role in this drama because i like her so much.
While acting is not bad, as no substance in the story, the actors/actresses can not help but play along with.
Episode 6 actually the worse of the first 6 episodes where FL punished her fake brother with 30 lashes - my patience ended and stopped watching - still today i tried with ep 7, but simply I can't. Therefore I dropped at episode 6.
The audience is vary - from all around the world, many might run after the names of actors/actresses yet some may look for the meaningfulness of a storyline.

Screen writer ethics
It is a shame that they actually remove the main screenwriter from the list due to Yu Meng Long death tragedy. One of the main screenwriter is Li Meng aka as Guang Guang which the actor actually died in his apartment. Incredible Fantasy ART
This storyline was awesome. The fantasy elements felt incredibly real — especially the body art and the face mask on Cheng Lei’s character, Jinan. Honestly, whoever wrote this has an exceptionally imaginative mind. At times it felt like Cheng Lei stepped straight out of the screen — almost 3D.I’m still trying to figure out whose soul it belonged to and whether that character was immortal. That mystery stayed with me long after the episode ended. The writer truly should create another story centered on the supernatural warrior Cheng Lei portrayed — it was that good.
Song Yi was also excellent as a female warrior general. Though she’s a petite actress, she carried the role with strength and confidence and made it completely believable.
Everything worked together beautifully — the fantasy, the storyline, the music, and the sets were all perfectly balanced. And the horses… I loved them. The actors who rode them did a great job as well.
And I promise — I won’t mention Cheng Lei’s eyes. 😏
