Moonlight Mystique is a MUST watch drama
Bai Lu & Ao Ruipeng are excellent at portraying their characters. They are both the heart and soul of the drama. Bai Lu's eyes are very expressive and her changes in emotions are smooth and natural. Her crying scenes are beautifully done. Each one is different. Her voice suits the character very well. She dubbs her own voice and does a great job. Ao Ruipeng is a dark horse for sure. His aura, gaze, and acting is also on point. Both did their characters justice. The supporting cast also plays well in their roles, especially the characters Rong Xian & Ling Long & Mu Jiu, & Fu Ling. The drama gives the leads and supporting cast meaningful story lines. My favorite storylines belong to the main leads. Each of their hugs and kisses felt so meaningful and emotional. They both showed how to really love someone. Bai Lu & Ao Ruipeng have so much chemistry. I like the story of Rong Xian & Ling Long, too. I didn't care for Chong Zhao & Fu Ling's love story. I like their individual characters only. Even though there are side stories, they all tie in with the main story line. The main leads also have roles in lots of the side stories, which is really nice. There are no boring episodes. The story is paced very well. The cinematography and cgi are beautiful and well done. The emotional music is played at the right moments. The costumes, hairstyles, and make-up are nice. In summary, the cast is outstanding, the production/editing team is brilliant, and the story line is very good. I really enjoy this drama and will repeat it many times. Love it!!!Was this review helpful to you?

Could've been the next best xianxia but lacks (proper) groundwork
I am a huge fan of both fantasy and romance genres. So much so that I do not mind clichés and overly used tropes. In fact, in terms of worldbuilding, I do not mind suspending disbelief, sometimes to even an incredible extent, as long as both the execution and writing are good and static.I tried to understand Moonlight Mystique’s overall direction because the first episode really made me look forward to how it will pan out. While watching the first episode, I was actually reminded of Love Between Fairy and Devil, my first xianxia (which remains to be one of my favorite dramas of all time).
I didn’t mind the similarities. Actually, it was because of the resemblances that I had high hopes: misunderstood, “unsympathetic” ML who carries the weight of responsibilities, a nobody FL, demons, deities, revenge, pain, grief, good vs evil, justice…
I really had high hopes, but as the story progresses—you don’t even need to reach far out—the terrible writing becomes increasingly evident:
Plot
– I understand that a plot may carry subplots, with storylines having multiple narratives. It’s xianxia, after all. But the way these were simulated did not provide any impact and depth.
The writer had a thing in their mind, and I know that the vision is there. But the writer did not know where to go and how to get there, that it has become difficult to establish connections with the story and characters.
Characters—
FL
– Her character is inconsistent. Yes, she was initially arrogant and selfish, which is needed for her character development to materialize, but I find her anger towards SML is often misplaced and out of character, as someone who “values” family and ties.
I understand that SML is not perfect, was coerced into lying multiple times, and is not the best in decision-making. But ultimately, he was really left with no choice and the choices he made were the best ones among those handed to him. Which is why I don’t understand the deeply-rooted resentment the FL has for SML, when in fact, the FL did not deserve to act righteously at all during the first episodes.
– It was established from the onset that the FL’s motivations are grounded on repaying (kindness for the immortal who saved her and her sister) and revenge. These two were rather dissolved quickly, without a good exit.
Yes, the redirection was inevitable, but it was done haphazardly that it felt like cutting the characters from one scene and putting them onto the next sequence just so the story could continue.
SML and SFL
– The SML’s shift from one love interest to another feels unnatural.
The trope is enemies to lovers, but the change was too abrupt that it felt like their love story is more implied.
Editing
– The use of echo to reiterate, exaggerate, and highlight a character’s lines and the “swoosh” as a transition are a miss.
I first encountered the use of echo in a dialogue in Story of Kunning Palace (2023) and it was… ok.
For this series though, rather than amplifying the supposed to be emotional impact of a dialogue and a scene, it came out ridiculous and utterly unnecessary.
Ending
– Again, I am able to suspend disbelief adequately. I can even tolerate plot holes to a certain extent, as long as the writing and execution are good, and consistency and depth are there to establish enough emotional investment.
I am even more tolerant on these when it comes to xianxia, as they use reincarnation as an element to tie loose ends.
So, using reincarnation or second chances as a way to have a happy ending is not an issue at all. This actually gives the writer plenty of elements to play with as well. But Moonlight Mystique’s ending is so terrible that a happy ending cannot compensate it.
So, the ML willingly sacrificed his life for the greater good and to ultimately eradicate evil. Heartbreaking, but sounds good.
Time passed, and the FL traveled around the world and achieved so many things by herself—good, this is consistent with her character.
And then, the heaven reached out to FL and told her that “Those who died for the great cause will eventually return in another way." Ok, seems fair.
But a few moments later, as in after a few seconds, you can literally see the ML emerging from who knows where, walking on the water, towards the FL, for the reunion and happy ending—WHAT?
Even as a hopeless romantic, I still cannot let this pass—I need the why AND how.
It is a fantasy, but I need a motive. An effect that has sprouted from a missing cause only ruined their entire tribulation.
They could’ve used something to set off the resurrection: a surviving strand of soul or a part of a demon core of ML that overcame death. Whatever remnants—heck, a nail or a strand of hair would do— or explanation, I am willing to accept, but this? NO.
Also, it’s not only the ML who died for the greater good. There are plenty of characters who died fighting evil. Why are they not resurrected and walking on the water with ML?
It is a happy ending, but I’d rather have an open ending or a sad ending if this is how ridiculous the conclusion is.
I could only muster enough emotional connection with the characters, but the ending diminished it to a huge degree.
There are not only bad things in the series, though, as there are aspects where it surprisingly delivered well:
OST
– The OST is hauntingly beautiful that it could actually compensate for the unsteady writing and bad execution. Instead of the writing, the OST carried the storytelling on its back—it did not elevate the experience. It’s an experience in itself.
Ao Rui Peng and Bai Lu
– The chemistry between Ao Rui Peng and Bai Lu is there.
Ao Rui Peng is one of the pleasant surprises that this series has to offer.
Bai Lu is a good actress, and while Ao Rui Peng’s character portrayal has room for improvements, he does not lag behind Bai Lu’s performance at all.
Chang Hua Sen and Dai Lu Wa
– The actors cannot do anything with the terrible writing, but I find their character portrayal decent. They made the best out of it so they can transition well from one character to the next.
Chang Hua Sen’s portrayal of Chong Zhao and Hidden Lord is pretty good as well. You could tell which character he’s trying to portray based on his demeanor and facial expressions.
Lead’s relationship dynamic
– The good thing about the leads’ relationship is their effort to communicate, which eliminates unnecessary misunderstanding.
When the ML realized his growing feelings for the FL, his first thought was to sit down with FL to talk and settle this, which is quite an uncommon trait for any xianxia characters.
The development of their relationship is lacking, but both leads try to communicate with each other, which makes their relationship healthy.
In general, I think this could have been one of the best xianxias, but is ruined because of terrible groundwork and writing. All things considered; it is still a quite enjoyable watch.

"Unparalleled Chemistry: The Soul of the Drama"
The main CP in "Moonlight Mystique" is the beating heart of the show. Their chemistry is nothing short of electric, elevating every shared scene into something truly magical. From their first fateful encounter, their dynamic is charged with a push-and-pull tension that keeps you hooked. The leads share a deep emotional connection that transcends the usual romantic tropes. Their love feels genuine, built not just on fleeting passion but on a profound understanding of each other’s struggles, fears, and dreams. Whether they’re locked in a tender gaze under the moonlight or clashing due to their conflicting duties, their interactions are laced with an intensity that lingers long after the scene ends. The romantic progression is a masterclass in storytelling—subtle, patient, and deeply rewarding. Each glance, touch, and exchange of dialogue carries meaning, creating an emotional resonance that makes the audience root for them despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles they face.
"Ao Rui Peng: The Hidden Gem Who Shines Brightest"
One of the most captivating elements of "Moonlight Mystique" is the standout performance of Ao Rui Peng as the Demon Lord, both Fan Yue and Jing Yuan.. His portrayal of the male lead is nothing short of breathtaking, cementing him as one of the most promising actors in the industry. Ao Rui Peng brings a rare combination of gravitas and vulnerability to his role, embodying the immortal’s inner conflict between duty and love with remarkable nuance. His on-screen presence is magnetic, and his ability to convey complex emotions with subtle expressions sets him apart. Whether he’s battling celestial forces or quietly grieving his losses, Ao Rui Peng draws you into his character’s journey with unparalleled depth. The costumes are masterpieces in their own right, reflecting the characters’ personalities and journeys. Flowing silks, delicate embroidery, and a stunning color palette bring the xianxia aesthetic to life, while the cinematography captures every moment with artistic precision.

And, of course, there’s Ao Rui Peng—a hidden gem whose talent and charisma make him impossible to ignore. His performance is a revelation, and his chemistry with the female lead is the soul of the drama. Together, they create a love story that will be remembered as one of the most iconic in xianxia history.
If you’re a fan of xianxia or simply love great storytelling, "Moonlight Mystique" is an unmissable gem. It’s not just a drama—it’s a masterpiece that will stay with you long after the final credits roll - and the epilogue ;)

Well-Paced and Acted with Strong characters and Healthy romances
Subjective Gut Rating: 8.75It was a pleasant surprise that I like “Moonlight Mystique” so much, as I came in without much expectations. Having seen “The Blossoming Love” and “Love of the Divine Tree” before this, I never would have thought “Moonlight Mystique” is my favorite out of the 3 (my MDL friends would not have agreed with me). Despite being in the same universe as “Ancient Love Poetry”, you can watch this drama as a standalone.
Story/Pacing
Compared to the other 2 dramas I listed above, I feel that “Moonlight Mystique” has the best pacing and execution of the intersecting plot lines.. I binged all 40 episodes in 3-4 days without losing focus or interest at all. With each arc, the stories highlight strong familial bonds and friendships between the characters. Each supporting character is also given ample time for viewers to get to know them as a person, and their backstories in relation to the overarching plot. All these stories make me cry! When “The Blossoming Love” tells the backstory of the main leads from 10,000 years ago, the execution is boring and draggy. In contrast, “Moonlight Mystique” was able to tell the ancient story from 60,000 years ago in a much more interesting and well-paced way. Moreover, I am a huge fan of fight scenes and I feel they are spread out throughout the drama to keep me interested. There are dramas where the fights all happened in the first half of the drama and then the second half is full of talking with no action. That’s why I was especially pleased to see these fight scenes evenly distributed.
Acting
Such solid acting from the 4 main leads and the supporting cast. I don’t think there’s anyone that I found to be outright awful.
- Ao Rui Peng: What a surprise! I have to say I was not confident in him at all in playing the demon lord based on his previous roles. But I was glad he proved me wrong! I don’t personally find him to be my kind of handsome, but I think he made me fall in love with his character, Fan Yue. Ao Rui Peng has big eyes, and I can see them switching from cold (but not mean) to stern (yet tender). His acting is on par with Bai Lu and they have good chemistry together.
-Bai Lu: Bai Lu is Bai Lu. You know what to expect from her and she delivers. Her role as Bai Shuo started out to be a spoiled little brat, but she grew to be a courageous, independent fighter. Watching her doing the wire work is amazing (both in the drama and the behind-the-scenes clips). Everything looks so effortlessly beautiful. She’s beautiful when she fights, and she’s beautiful when she cries.
- Dai Lu Wa: She was quite a scene stealer in the beginning as the little demon girl. I kinda miss her arrogant and badass personality in the latter half of the drama. In the earlier episodes, she’s just so much fun and you can’t help but follow her around the screen. Her emotional scenes are pretty good as well.
- Chang Hua Sen: His acting isn’t bad either, though might not be the weakest of the four. I was worried that his character will go a different direction and then I worry he might be typecast into certain roles.
Romance
- Bai Shuo + Fan Yue: I really enjoy their romance and how it was developed. The development feels natural and works with the plot. I am actually a little surprised that the feelings and they were a couple before ¾ of the drama. They are such a strong, mature and green couple. They understand each other, support each other even though they may not agree to the decision 100%. They serve as the objective listener and adviser when the other person is dealing with something personal. Their love is strong from beginning to the end with no misunderstanding but honest communication. It’s rare to see this in a xianxia drama.
- Fu Ling + Chong Zhao: I also really like this pair. Their story is very different from the main romance which provides viewers with something different and interesting. They have just enough screen time to make me feel invested without taking over too much time.
Other romance: Throughout the drama, there are several other romances within each arc. They are all beautiful and romantic, yet also heartbreaking. I can honestly say that as a hopeless romantic, I am quite satisfied with almost all the romances in “Moonlight Mystique” (maybe except how Fire Girl falls in love with Wolf boy).
Production Quality
First of all, there are so many different hairstyles, accessories and costumes for all the female leads. I don’t think I’ve seen Bai Lu in so many different outfits in a drama before. Each of the designs complement the location of the current storyline. Bai Lu and Dai Lu Wa look absolutely beautiful! Since this is a xianxia drama, there aren’t many fight scenes with actual martial arts. Most of them are done by CGI and green screens. I absolutely love the purple flowers by Fu Ling (and reminds me of my favorite purple in Ancient Love Poetry). But the special effects and green screen/cinematography could be a hit-or-miss as well. There are times when the scenes seem too fake and computer-generated. But other times, they are colorful and beautiful. On the other hand, unfortunately most of the actors are dubbed except for Bai Lu (that’s why she’s the queen!). The actors sounded fine to me in the BTS clips, and unfortunately, I noticed inconsistency in the lip syncing (mostly in the first half of the drama).
Of course, reviews and ratings are very subjective. But I do really like “Moonlight Mystique” and after finishing it, my gut tells me it's worth between 8.5-9.0. Therefore, I am giving this an 8.75 (rounding up to 9.0), the same rating as “Ancient Love Poetry”. It’s not a perfect drama, but these days, it’s hard to find one that keeps me invested throughout with solid acting, and no annoying characters.
Random Observations:
1. Warning: Do not get attached to any character, you will be heartbroken.
2. It’s lovely to have a drama with all smart leads who you like and can root for.
3. Bai Lu has perfected the shock look when being kissed (I’m still not a fan of that look,no matter who the actor/actress is).
4. Wolf boy acted so well in the last back hug scene. Gosh I cried so hard!
5. So, pink and purple light when the leads first made love (?), reminds me of “Ashes of Love”.
6. Rare to see a wedding proposal in a xianxia and it was sad and beautiful at the same time.
7. I am fine with the actual ending and don’t need more. I might be in the minority, though pretty and sweet, I find the special episode (lines spoken) also cheesy and a little cringe.

Want to find my own path
i don’t know from where i begin reviewing Moonlight MystiqueBut lets see the storyline first;
an absolute masterpiece!! all the characters not only main leads even the small characters all have a purpose and meaning to the drama and that's what make this drama interesting because you can see the storyline connection to eachother even till the end it remains mysterious in its own way that's why it is interesting.
the production of this drama is also indescribable not only Bai Lu and Ao Rui Peng but the entire cast showed such true emotions for their characters where it’s honestly like watching the characters themselves and their stories not the actor/actress aside from acting the whole crew from behind the scenes legit act like a family all understanding eachother.
the CGI, the costumes and the OSTs of this drama is just masterpiece alone whenever I listen to the OST of this drama i can feel every feeling and remember the scene happened along with the song, it is just an absolute masterpiece!!
It's a much watch xianxia drama. The story and acting is so good that you can feel what the characters are feeling. Even i feel sad in some scenes and even cried a lot and i even though it have sad ending but i was super excited to see them together it was such a beautiful moment damnn!!
for me the saddest part in this drama are many like when her parents died it was painful to watch and the most cried scene for me is when Bai Shuo takes the flowers and propose Fan Yue and without my realisation the tears started flowing and I didn't even realise.
Overall every character in this drama is amazing and having their own story line be it the Protagonists or the supporting characters. well i enjoyed this drama soo much and I think i will watched it again, i guess i really wanted to torment myself with tears loll

National Treasure
This has to be the best Xianxia drama I’ve ever watched . I initially ranked it top 3 but after watching the ending it immediately rose to number 1.This drama had the best type of relationship between the leads and the best part is there were no misunderstandings. As a dedicated historical cdrama watcher. I couldn’t believe my eyes . I started sitting on the edge of my seat because I felt there’d be a huge misunderstanding ahead that would end my heart as a viewer but thankfully, there wasn’t .
It was 40 episodes and each episode was interesting. I have a habit of skipping scenes that don’t involve the main leads but for this drama , I genuinely didn’t see the need to as almost every scene was engaging.
The visuals for the drama from the styling to the makeup and actors were great . The story too was well written and everything made sense in the end .
I honestly wish I could forget everything and watch it again for the first time . This drama is as important to me as the untamed and ancient love poetry.
If you were having cold feet or looking for a sign to start or complete this drama, let my review be it !

TRAGEDY OF MOONLIGHT MYSTIQUE
Moonlight mystique is a unique drama done by Bai Lu as female lead and Ao Rui Peng as the male lead. This drama in summary tells a tale of three realms, Lunar, Demon and Hidden power as well as a love story of 3 individuals going 60,000 years back. This drama consisted of trials and tribulations for the female lead and the concept of a set path of life. As no matter what intervention is made and what change is done, the "WILL OF HEAVEN' always has to be followed. This drama brings a mix of emotions to viewers, from admiration, to laughter to anger to sadness to joy to hate to love to anger and all the way to regret. The drama causes a stir of emotions much more than these. But why would it be a tragedy, you may ask.
From the earliest onset of the drama to the very end, even the OST could be included, you can feel the sense of grief looming over the drama, and how the unforeseen and unwanted would occur. To see character you love and adore die along the way and you wander why must they all die. Why does everyone the male and female leads love or care about die, why must the story follow this path?
Although the drama itself had a lots of dynamics the story broke my heart. Time and time again, I see a character that has been built up so well throughout the movie die for one reason or the other, my heart feels a pang, like its breaking. For some people, watching a drama is like a walk in the park but for me I let myself, my body , mind , soul and emotions, feel and try to relate with what the characters are feeling. and every time I do, I end up having tears streaming down my cheeks unconsciously . Although I really love this movie as a whole, it really put me to tears, but I guess I'll still be able to watch it again one day. But for now, I recommend you watch it and experience the feeling i felt yourself

Worth watching!
Just finished the epilogue for Moonlight mystique… had a minor cry fest finishing this series, but like in a good way? Some dramas you watch until the end and it’s a let down… glad to review that for me MM is the completely the opposite and gets really good in the end. There is a good payoff in the final arc, and all the loose ends get tied up. There are no weird plot holes, and all the characters are smart and behave logically throughout. Would characterize this series as HE in my book, with just the right amount of bittersweetness. I do think that the drama starts out strong but probably had one too many side quests in the middle, so that it was harder to build a narrative momentum for a bit… but again in the end the story really came together very nicely, so that the sum was better than the parts. Did think that the last arc, which was the most interesting of all, could have been extended for an even better show.In terms of casts - loved (🥰) the main couple, and eventually also the second couple… just about no fast forwarding needed. The main leads, played by Bai Lu and Ao Rui Peng, were one of the most supportive, green-flag couples in all of drama land, which I appreciate. I thought the acting was good and would really hit me emotionally at different points in the show. BL I’ve always thought has a way of making the audience relate to her, and plays sweet/spunky heroines quite well and does so here as well. ARP, who is completely new to me, I think will probably take off soon based on his performance here. And honestly on a superficial level there was just SO much eye candy. The leads are pretty, the sidekicks are pretty, minor characters in the side plots are pretty… everyone’s unusually attractive (apart from the eternals, ironically).
Anyway, I would recommend for anyone on the fence to give this a try, and to stick to the end. Try to avoid spoilers if you can for a better experience.

Missed Opportunities
What I liked:🪷 Beautiful costumes for the leads
🪷 Gorgeous OSTs and BGMs
🪷 Chen Ye’s arc
What I struggled with:
The leads:
⚫️ Both leads lacked character development. They remained the same throughout, just falling in love. Their personalities felt flat and one-dimensional making it hard to connect with them.
The villains:
⚫️ Mo Li's motivations weren’t fleshed out enough, which made it difficult to see him as a real threat. Zhen Yu was even harder to take seriously as a villain.
Second lead couple:
⚫️ Chong Zhao was at least consistent, while Bai Xi’s characterization felt uneven. At first, she had almost no distinct traits beyond her devotion to Zhen Yu. Later, when she "found herself," she underwent such a drastic shift that it felt like she became a completely different person rather than evolving naturally.
The eternals:
⚫️ Their decision-making was frustrating at times, often jumping to extreme actions without much thought. It made some moments hard to take seriously.
The demon lord’s sidekicks:
⚫️ They didn’t add much depth to the story.
The romance:
⚫️ I didn’t feel much chemistry between the leads, which made their relationship hard to invest in. The second leads had a little more spark, but still not enough to be memorable. There was one particular kiss scene, Fan Yue’s farewell while Bai Shuo was crying, that just felt off.
Pacing and writing:
⚫️ The pacing was okay, but the frequent scene repetition made some episodes feel stretched. I watched at 2× speed and didn’t miss anything, which says a lot about how often things were recycled.
⚫️ The script relied heavily on repetition, not just in dialogue but in story structure. The same patterns played out over and over, which made things boring.
⚫️ Almost every character introduced died except the leads, making the entire journey feel pointless.
OSTs:
⚫️ The music was beautiful, but it was overused to the point that even the best tracks started to lose their impact. Some placements felt odd, with multiple songs stacked back-to-back, which took away from their emotional weight.
Worldbuilding and production:
⚫️ The world had a lot of potential, but it felt too empty. The leads’ costumes, while stunning, stood out so much that they sometimes felt out of place compared to the rest of the cast. Some props also looked artificial, which affected the watch.
Casting:
⚫️ The casting wasn’t the strongest. Some performances stood out, Dai Lu Wa as Fu Ling was a good choice, and Chang Hua Sen really gave his best effort as Chong Zhao.
The ending:
⚫️ In the last moments, the show claimed everyone got revived, but since they were never actually shown, it felt unconvincing.
⚫️ It felt rushed, packing too much into the final episode without giving enough explanation or closure.
Final thoughts:
✨️ This drama had the potential to be great, and there were definitely some strong elements, but it felt like a lot of opportunities were missed. With more consistent writing and character development, it could have been something really special.
This is just my personal view though 😊

Good cast and amazing music/visuals
The Good:The choice of cast, the CGI, the costumes, and the music were all amazing.
The Bad:
It's a pretty run-of-the-mill story filled with sacrifices. The ML and female lead FL are constantly getting injured—sometimes even dying—only to be miraculously brought back to life just to keep the story moving. The plot relies heavily on misunderstandings and withholding of information, to the point where even a reasonably knowledgeable three-year-old would ask the right questions. However, according to the story, the leads conveniently avoid doing so, because apparently, it's "too soon." And let's not forget the fight scenes—they're lackluster, with nothing more than endless blood coughing to make them seem dramatic. The music was good, but it was way too overused, losing its impact over time.

I absolutely love this drama
I just finished watching Moonlight Mystic, and I can’t stop thinking about how amazing it was! The story had me hooked from the start with its mix of mystery, romance, and fantasy. It’s so well-written, with twists that kept me guessing and emotional moments that really hit home.Bailu was absolutely stunning in this drama. Her acting felt so real, and she brought so much depth to her character. But honestly, the entire cast deserves praise. Everyone did such a great job, and their chemistry made the relationships feel so genuine.
What I loved most was how the show balanced everything so perfectly—there’s drama, heartfelt moments, and even a little humor. If you’re looking for a drama that will keep you entertained and move you at the same time, I highly recommend Moonlight Mystic!

Had the potential but something was missing. Second couple stole the spotlight.
This drama is about the female lead who is seeking immortality and gets entangled with the male lead, a Demon Lord, when she unexpectedly absorbs his contemplation stone. Bound by fate, together they embark on a journey to collect all five contemplations: kindness, killing, love, hate and greed, while in the process revealing past secrets and forgotten memories.POSITIVE:
- Second couple stole the spotlight. Their chemistry was great and their relationship developed beautifully.
- Queen Bai Lu. Her acting was on a totally new level and worth the praise.
- Healthy main’s relationship. The drama stirred clear from the typical misunderstanding trope.
- Second female lead was captivating to watch. I loved her acting performance and how her story and character was written. She was hands down the best part of the drama.
- Vicious villains that are real villains with cool backstories. This was definitely one of the highlights of the drama.
- Well written brother and sister’s relationship. One of the best bits of the drama.
- Lots of kiss scenes (for a cdrama).
- Balance between sweet and angsty vibes.
- Captivating OST that elevated the drama (except one big flaw from the production).
- Nice CGI (at least for the most part).
- Resentment arc was the best, followed by the Divine Realm arc.
NEGATIVE:
- Male lead issue. I love the actor but unfortunately I couldn’t fall in love with his character. I felt like he didn’t have the domineering presence of a Demon Lord that I was expecting. His aura was just too sweet. He tried his best but his strength lies more in being playful and cute rather than threatening. His character also felt more of a love interest than a well fleshed out male lead. Many times, he was written as very weak, in favor of making the female lead appear stronger. The most annoying part was towards the end, when he repetitively kept “dying” and coming back.
- Main couple issue. I couldn’t get emotionally invested, despite loving the actors. Even though they were nice to watch, I felt their chemistry was more of friends than lovers. Their last two kisses, though, looked visually really nice.
- Overused OST. I totally LOVE the main song but it was used in literally every episode, in every scene which made it feel less impactful and just cheap. The main song should have been used only for the major emotional moments between the main leads, not for everyone and everything.
- Visuals issue. I have mixed feelings about the set designs, costumes and CGI. Sometimes they looked really good and I was definitely impressed but other times it was too colourful and tacky. The green screen scenes looked too digital and made the drama cheap for me. Even though the director had toned down the blinding lights (SOKP), there were other issues that made the drama lose its quality.
OVERALL:
I feel like the plot of the drama didn’t follow the usual xianxia route which gave it a fresh take but at the same time, it wasn’t executed that well. Collecting all the contemplations felt repetitive at times even though there were some good twists along the way. The main couple lacked the spark but the red flag second couple kind of made up for it. There are some really impactful moments in the drama that made me emotional but at the same time I always felt something was missing. In conclusion, this drama was a mix of hit and miss. It wasn't bad but it didn't become a favourite of mine. But if you love xianxia, I still recommend to try it out.
