The Atypical Family

I wanted to like this drama but it irritated me so much I had to leave a review

I’m deeply frustrated by this show as I think it has some really great elements like the story between the daughter, dad and family. The running theme that he didn’t protect her like he protected everyone else - that his own mother treated her poorly because she didn’t think she was his child. There was so much to work with. That the story could’ve worked without the romance honestly. The romance felt rushed and forced. The way the female was written also - by halfway through still felt no genuine sense of attraction from her to the male lead. And vice versa. I could go about this longer than the actual drama was. There was no development truly.

I heard so many good things and saw many clips that made me really excited to watch this. The young actress who plays Bok In Na though really was great and I look forward to seeing her career from now on. Future main lead in the making. And on a superficial note Jang Kiyoung really suited his hair in this drama

TIME TRAVEL DONE WELL: BEST UNDERRATED 2024 !

i love timetravel\ superpower shows but too often they r not well executed... so let me tell you about this gem as a lover of this genre! no spoilers!

so for 'atypical family', the synopsis looked interesting , about superpower family in modern times... i love a modern time magical universe , but i am almost always disappointed in the weak plots (like the recent destined with you T_T) The bar was already low for me haha!
So... even if the poster looks cringe, EVEN IF THE first episode was absolutely funky and almost incredilous... i gave it a chance...

still not much hope except WAW! we discover layers in this story and the imagery, plot, dialogue , characters and cinematography and ost are alll cherry on cake. every passing minute in the early episodes was brilliantly orchestrated to build an amazing setting. this shows doesn't try to overwhelm the viewer with superfluous drama or impress, its just a brillant world that imposes itself!

WHAT I LOVED!
>all characters are flawed and nuanced (if not crazy, the title 'atypical' fits really well ) and they are all given space in the show!

> main leads really shine in this ! FL is among my fav characters ever now! imperfect but so much growth and nuance, she made me think of the movie 'the travellers wife'

> the superpowers bring great reflections on our own lives. their powers and loosing them are lessons we can appreciate during the show. so much imagery in the show!!

> THE LAWS OF TIMETRAVEL ARE SOLID& consistant ( except one minor detail)

> they brought up free will & predetermined destiny concept very well

>all secondary elements are also very enjoyable.

>nothing was superfluous or looked like a filler plot except the ad placement LOL

> the intruigue reveal did not disappoint!

LESS LIKED:
i really liked all except some writer manipulation to withhold information. don't forget its a show about the seen & unseen, past & future!! most often its done well, but sometimes its a bit much
Also ML often looks like a fool , not that it's a bad thing, (bc it fits with his problem ) but it felt a bit much sometimes.

the attention to detail in the writing and execution shines in every episode. i hope we get to see more of this world!! PLEASE RENEW THIS GEM T_T

Romantic Time travel done right

Why I didn't watch this sooner, I'll never know. I couldn't put it down. I came for the love, the romance, and the usual, and this one was everything but. It's offbeat, extravagant, flawed, and beautiful. It's done so well, and it's so relatable and lovely. Watch it now; you won't regret it.

LIKES:
-chemistry is great
-the way they introduced the characters, the way the story was presented
-the concept is fresh and cool
-the redemption of the FL
-love how all the times he traveled to made sense and everything was connected
-character Development was on point
-the way they didnt use her scam as the main conflict to break them up and drag the drama but as a stepping to stone to something real
-they kept it half scary half fun and a little depressing. It all made sense and that's asking a love for a fantasyish drama.
-the costuming, the music, the direction and special effects were top tier
-the end of every episode is just chef's kiss
-the solution to the big conflict at the end made sense and it was both simple and complicated.
DISLIKES:
- I barely have any; just nitpicking.
- I wanted more couple time, but with only 12 episodes, I get why we didn't get as much. There's plenty for only 12 episodes.
‐ the transformation of the obese sister could have been better executed. There was no reveal for her hard work because we in one scene.We saw her losing some weight but still being really overweight, and then the next scene she was back to normal.And nobody cared. no one mentioned anything.

I realized it wasn't 16 episodes when I hit episode 11; I was shocked. Usually, I say dramas could have ended on the 12th episode to stop the dragging of unnecessary conflict, but this one... Just wow.

all in all someone give this director and write a trophy. They worked hard and it shows. This was an awesome watch. Just art.

I like the fact that this atypical drama took on the superpower genre and turned it into something original and unexpected. Rather than following the usual “with great powers come great responsibilities” rule, the family had little interest in saving the world. Instead, they tried to use their superpowers to live an ordinary life, even as ordinary life kept getting in the way of their superpowers. The counterpoint to the family was another atypical family of scammers, simultaneously despicable and endearing. The music in the drama was also unusual and, I thought, wonderful. I found The Atypical Family’s ultimate message of love and sacrifice to be much more compelling than that of the other Korean superpower drama, "Moving," which ended in the usual apocalyptic superpower battle between good and evil.

Um dorama que me surpreendeu.

Comecei a assistir por conta de alguns comentários nas redes sociais, mas não é que a história me surpreendeu? Achei uma temática diferente, do que eu já assisto normalmente.

Uma família com superpoderes, que não sabem lidar com o fato que o estão perdendo, por conta da era moderna e por problemas pessoais.

O bom que aborta temas que fazem a gente reflexionar: como lidar com a perda, como lidar com as frustrações, como lidar com a indiferença, como lidar com a solidão.

E uma mulher que entrou apenas na família para extorqui-los, acaba sendo a chave para a solução de todos os problemas.

Gostei de todos os personagens, e o desenvolvimento dos mesmos. A única coisa que achei que poderia ter sido melhor elaborado é com relação ao desenvolvimento do romance dos principais. No meu ponto de vista achei muito acelerado, o que me casou uma pergunta: em que momento eles começaram de fato a se amar? Isso me incomodou um pouco. Não sei se também não enxerguei uma química entre os atores que fizesse eu sentir isso. Mas tirando isso, achei a história perfeita.

E como a história deles estava conectada, tornou tudo lindo. E o romance inesperado da irmã do prota com o cara da sauna foi simplesmente sensacional. Gostei muito também do atores mirins, eles arrasam.

Só achei que o final deixou muitas brechas, gostaria que tivesse sido melhor desenvolvido. Mas foi lindo de ver o momento em que o filho deles foi busca-lo, e assim a família se tornou completa.

A-not-so-Typical K-drama

Atypical family is not your typical Kdrama and I think that's very clear from the description itself. I always love to watch romcoms, melo, and thrillers, but I always find these dramas very refreshing. One thing I have noticed with Netflix is that they mostly like to take these kind of 'out-of-the-box' dramas.Now there's a lot of things I liked and disliked about this series that I will explain below.

The Good
1. The Plot
A family with superpowers? YES!! I don't think we have any Kdrama about a 'family' with superpowers. What I am glad about is that they didn't overdo it unlike some English series that I have watched. I was excited about the plot, but as the story developed, I had different opinions.

2. The Music
The music is great! Especially 'I see you' by Lee Sora. As soon as I heard that song playing, i felt like I was flying and transcended to another universe. None of the music are dramatic. They are soothing? (I am not getting the right word here)

3. The Acting
I have to say, the acting convinced me. More than the adult actors, the child actors did an amazing job.

4. The Atypical Family
I loved how everyone overcame their differences and bonded very well. A superpower family bonding with the family trying to scam them was heartwarming (you'll understand when you watch it.) I won't go into the details because that has spoilers.

The Underwhelming aspects

1. The Story
As much as I liked the plot, I felt like the script was lacking as the series progressed. Don't get me wrong, from 1-8 episodes I really liked it. 9-11 episodes were emotional, but I felt it a little skippable. 12th episode could have been a little longer. What I am trying to say here is that the 9-11 episodes couldn't grab my interest and attention as much as the first 8 episodes.

2. The Chemistry
The chemistry between the main lead was a bit unsatisfying for me. Not that they lacked chemistry, but after a point, I couldn't connect with them too much. I liked the chemistry between the sisters of the main leads more.

3. The Ending
Usually I like happy endings. But what happened with this? The Ending was good but bland. More like abrupt? It is like that food that tastes good but makes you feel like something more could have made it better.

Overall, this is a good watch and I would recommend everyone to give this a try keeping aside your bias after reading all the reviews.

Superpowers

I love it.
Took a while to finish the drama because I was on vacation but this mini series is so good. Theres part where i was lost and confused but the overall story.. i like it.
The way Bok Gwi Ju healed and changed for the better was cute. Hes so ffff hot. After watching this drama it makes me want to watch MY ROOMATE IS A GUMIHO AAHAHHA.
The female lead tho... AAHHH SHES SO PWETTY. I did not know she was the chatcater in the movie 'UNLOCKED'.
BUT anywys i like this drama. Nice. Simple with supernatural effects.
I-na and the guy's moments are so kyut too.
Idk whay else to say.

First kdrama that I've completed this year

Watching this kdrama was never in my plans. I threw it on to just watch something while doing a mindless task and I'm so happy that I did. This drama was beautiful and phenomenal.

The story and the colorful set of characters drew me in, making me curious about what happened to them and what would happen. I was sucked into their past, pressnt, and future. Which is very on theme for this story. The characters made you go through several emotions and live in all of them. The story makes you try to figure everything out and puzzle it all together yourself but still await the truths to find.

The acting was amazing and I'm already looking to finsih some dramas with the male lead and now look into sole with female lead. Their chemistry was chefs kiss.

I will be watching this again! And you should too!

i binged this show in a day....

When the trailer for this drama first came out I decided to wait until it ends to start on it. Im glad I did that. This drama is heavy on the supernatural aspect most of the plot is related to that BUT thats not all. Surprisingly there are many other interesting stories as well for each character in the show.

When you think the female lead is your normal kdrama lead but actually she has an interesting family. She also has a story in the past which of course will somehow connect to the future. The male lead has a very deep storyline as well, he had his obsessions which made him oblivious to things around him and the FL is the person who brought him back to reality.

I enjoyed watching the drama it had great acting and the unexpected plot twists. Park Soyi was really good she was so good at bringing out the emotions i cried so much when she and her dad finally reunited. Jang kiyong was really good as well as he had to act so many different versions of him in a short period of time. Like his character was just a roller coaster ride. It kept changing. Plot wise there were quite alot of loopholes...but it didnt impact the flow much so it was fine.

The romance chemistry, i feel we went from 0 to 100 without anything in the middle. When the FL said she liked him I was like what exactly did you'll do to like each other. Like it was so random. For him I can understand a bit because the FL is the reason his daughter has someone to rely on. So maybe thats how he liked her but like it went from "r u here to marry me for money" to "please marry me" in like 1 eps or something. After they got together there wasnt alot of romance moments only some cute moments.

What the adults missed, the kids had it. The daughter and her crush although they didnt have many scenes together, i felt their chemistry was stronger. I just wanted the daughter to be happy towards the end.

The going to the past and seeing the future part will be quite confusing. But the ending twist was good!

Overall its a decent drama to binge but I dont think i will rewatch it. I really hoped they had more father daughter moments T.T
