i did love this family

i ate this up lmao i mean i have complaints (lol) and the ending, as in the last few minutes could be better but the things i liked, i really really liked. i thought this has an entertaining and engaging story. every ep was packed. jang kiyong and chun woohee had so much chemistry to me plus the acting from everyone was really good. i was emotionally moved by the different dynamics here. from our main couple, gwiju and dahae, to gwiju and his daughter ina, even with dahae and her adoptive mom who is also a scammer (well, dahae was, too lol), gwiju and his family etc. i cried at so many scenes lol i just felt really connected to these characters. but i also laughed and kicked my feet in the air. i gotta say tho, kdrama writers and directors still can't have an actual fat actor in their drama huh? i mean they could give literally give donghee a different power and this could all still work but alas! that was disappointing. also her power being fatphobic is so funny actually. and the way they repeatedly said how gwiju was depressed in the beginning was ridiculous lol we get it!! his power really went "if you're mentally ill, just be happy" lmao yeah. this is not perfect and i see its faults but the watching experience was so fun and i just adored this family in the end.

wonderful drama

I didn't expect to like this drama this much. It has a great cast, VERY unique premise and interesting and complex relationships between the characters. I like how almost all the characters are morally ambiguous - this is an accurate depiction of real life, in which morality isn't black and white, and every hero doesnt wear a cape and isnt perfect. I liked how even the worst characters (Ji-han aside, we all hate him) could develop and become a better person with the help of others. I think the romance left something to be longed for as it mainly focused on the supernatural connection between the two, which is important but i think there couldve been slightly more in terms of textbook romance, however the plot wasnt frustrating and angsty, and that i applaud since watching a romance that turns angsty mid-drama is like living hell on earth. My main qualm with the plot is the gwi-ju dying and then being brought back into present life by his son arc. Although the ending is good, it felt rushed and i often feel frustrations with dramas which spend more time showing the troubles and then once they resolve them, they leave you with five minutes to enjoy them. This drama did just that, only on the penultimate and final episodes, however. I REALLY loved hyeong-tae and grace's characters, they added a light comedy element to the drama whilst also balancing menacing and comforting personas. What i particularly loved was the scene in the penultimate episode, where the three girls essentially collaborate to destroy jihan and put their positions as frenemies aside. I smiled so much when i saw Dong-hee taking grace through the air and the three rejoicing afterwards - it was really heartwarming. I also enjoyed hyeong-taes soft protective gestures, and the way he made sure to keep everyone safe without their knowledge - this was honestly so sweet. I-nas plotline at school was not really of any interest to me and i found it rather boring and generic, but what i did enjoy was her relationship with gwi-ju becoming better, and her finding a mother figure and a friend in da-hae. This drama was a good watch and i would recommend it to others. Shoutout to choi Gwang-rok and ryu abel, i enjoyed their acting the most.

Good Enough

Korean Drama '' The Atypical Family '' is a family fantasy melodrama.

The story incorporates a lot of elements and blends them all nicely.

The melodrama was just enough to keep things intense and interesting, the romance was cute and slow burn, the family drama was sweet and dramatic, and the family bonds were strong and worked in the drama's favor.

Also, the fantasy element was well handled and the time travel was smoothly explained and didn't overcomplicate things.

The ending, in addition, was unique, but kind of rushed.

Finally, the performances were all enjoyable by everyone in the cast.

So, overall, eight out of ten.

Not only the family is atypical, but also the plot! This family no longer has extra powers and the only person who can recover them is this girl (who approaches them with deception).
The soundtrack is nothing special, a little confusing for this character who moves in time, the actors act well but without a particular alchemy.

What an Underrated Show

When you ask someone about best show of 2024, why people rarely mention this one in the first? Truthfully before watching this show, I was expecting this to focus more on the fantasy and supernatural side. I don't know but maybe that makes me easier to enjoy this show. And by doing that, I feel all of things about the romance and scam aren't dragging. This is also the show where past relationship isn't the annoying part, and instead becomes the key of the story. Overall, the story is a well-written one. It tells about almost everyone struggles and how to overcome them. The romance isn't excessive and the somewhat thriller isn't dreadfully dragging. Character developments are really strong in this show. They learn about their flaws, and they learn how to accept it.

Jang Ki-Yong and Chun Woo-Hee play well as the ML and FL. But if you're asking the star of this show, it is Park So-Yi. She doesn't get the most screentime, and she's even a quiet type. Even though she rarely talks, but her actions and expressions speak a lot.

Although the story itself is already impressive, some things are worth to note. We all see that Bok Dong-Hui losts her weight from time to time. But prior the wedding, she suddenly losts her weight in extreme amount which is weird. Episode 11 is clearly a filler and it is there only just because they can't have an odd number of episodes . Also it is questionable that Man-Heum gets over with her husband's affair easily. I kinda like the soundtrack when they put it correctly, because for me they sometimes use it in the scenes that don't belong with the soundtrack's vibe.

To me, this is a must watch. I understand why people rarely talk about this, it is because the makjangs are too much for romance lover and the romance is too much for fantasy enjoyer. However to me, this show is well balanced.

Wasted potential

I don't know how people are saying that they've completed all 12 episodes when there are only 10 episodes broadcasted till today.

Anyhow, I don't understand the high rating. This show has so much wasted potential. It could have been a mindf**k show with the time travel theme, it could have been the exploration of parent-child relationships, it could have been a show about an elaborate fraud scheme, it could have been a super-hero show, or it could been about mental health and healing. Or it could have been about an epic love story. Even Jang Ki Young was a disappointment if I was wanting to watch an 'idol' drama.

It has been NONE of these. At most I would class it as a somewhat interesting love story, sans romance. I keep watching and waiting for any one of these to emerge, but none has. The only reason I'm continuing is because I just want to see how bad it is at the end.

How to fall for scammers: Bok Family edition

I started watching this drama because of the superpower aspect of the drama. I was curious about how they lost them and what special thing Da Hae will do so they regain them. Let's just say it almost fell short.

Our Atypical family has five members: Grandma (Bok Man Heum) who is the family leader and has precognitive dreams, Grand dad (Eom Soon Gu) who serves as the family pillar and a normal guy, Dad (Bok Gwi Ju) our male lead who can travel to the past and the supposed family gym runner, Aunt (Bok Dong Hee) who is a former model and can fly and the Daughter (Bok Ina) who is shy and introverted and can read minds. They all, well 3.5/5, suffer from "modern-day problems" like insomnia (grandma), bulimia (aunt), depression (dad) and smartphone addiction (daughter-she is the 0.5). I think I-na just needed a little more adult care and some therapy, then she would've been fine. They are all struggling to use their powers because of this alleged problems but spoiler, it's not, it's because they aren't happy. See, this family merely coexists with each other under the same room with grand dad trying his best to keep everything afloat. Enter Do Da Hae. She alongside her "adoptive" family run cons to get money to pay off her late dad's debt and the Boks (quick question: why didn't they take their dad's surname?? I digress) are the latest targets.

At first it seems like it will work seeing as they are practically beyond repair. But because of her fixation on playing wife and healing them, she unintentionally drags them out of the slump, and injects some happiness into them, thus curing them. She also helps them reconcile and finally care for each other thus mending the family. And she also falls in love putting the plan at risk because conflict of interest. Our unexpected second couple comes from Ina and her school crush who notices our invisible girl as much as she tries to stay hidden. He has her back and always makes her feel important.

This drama was a fun but mostly frustrating watch. Ngl, until like ep 6 ish, I was struggling to figure out how I feel about it. I was serving an interesting mid if I could say. There's fun moments and painfully obvious clichés. Not to mention the main couple's romance being outshone by the Kids. I won't talk about how the writer gaslighted (?) us into rooting for the main couple's romance after all the things Da Hae did to manipulate them or even how Ina's supposed friend turned best friend turned BULLY was just not happy about her not talking which is why she humiliated her like that..😑😑🙄🙄.
Not the biggest fan of the ending because it just raised more questions and I wish our young couple deserved more screen time.

maybe turning 16 eps dramas into 12 eps dramas is a good idea

This drama was a roller coaster of emotions. I have several complaints about subplots. Spacing at times was over the place. Why did they waste so much time on BDH's cheating husband or BIN's bully (who was pampered by writers)? Give me a good reason why Ina was forced to forgive a girl who bullied her out of the blue because others ignored her (as they should). Dohee deserved so much more and I wish that we had a better insight into her life after dropping that sorry excuse of a man. I can't believe that they dragged these story lines until the last episode. I've made my remarks previously on how leads chemistry isn't chemistrying but it's not actors' fault that their characters got together so late on the series. Also, I don't think the ending is open. It was pretty straightforward. The couple had a child (5 y.o in a clip) and Gwiju was pulled into his memory of them. Although, I wish that they would've had one episode to explain how BGJ survived the fire and maybe how their family earned superpowers in general.

unique concept

A slowpaced and a little serious show but definitely worth it. It has a very unique concept, we have had many supernatural shows before but this one is definitely different than the shows we have watched before. The Cast, The acting and The storyline are all amazing. Not to mention this show also depicts family bond and familial love. I absolutely loved this show especially all the characters and the actors who played those characters. I would definitely recommend watching this show, trust me it is worth your time as well as your effort.

A story that grows on you

Unlike other fantasy kdramas, it starts slow, but builds with an engaging story, atmosphere, and music. The first few episodes are weighed down by cliched fatphobic humor, but the characters and their dynamics become increasingly captivating. While the FL's styling shines, the ML's look, especially the hairstyle, is a constant source of amusement (one can only hope for a change!). The drama is melancholic, focusing on family over romance, yet the romantic moments and kisses are impactful. The exceptional child actress portraying the ML's daughter steals the show. The flawed, relatable characters grow and find redemption by the satisfyingly tied-up HEA in just 12 episodes, despite minor plot inconsistencies.

Even if the plot doesn't grab you, the show's mesmerizing cinematography is a must-see. It's a visual treat!
(not to forget the wonderful performance by actor Roy Choi who played FL's uncle – he deserves a main role of his own)

A fun and weird experience, not necessarily a memorable one

Each member of the Bok family had a unique special power that they lost due to modern life crises. One day, the grandparents arrange a second marriage for their son/single father, Gwi Ju (Jang Ki Yong), with Da Hee (Chun Woo Hee) who might be able to bring their powers back. However, she and her family's true intention is to take them for all their worth.

Just like the title, the vibe and characters of Atypical Family are unique. Certain things gave me cringe, like the obesity portrayal throughout the story and the one-note annoying characters, but the plot’s unpredictability and the complex flawed characters managed to keep me tuned in each week.

Gwi Ju and Ina's father-daughter bonding were heartfelt, and I love the developing friendship between Da Hee and Gwi Ju’s sister, Dong Hee. The chemistry between Da Hee and Gwi Ju was great, although at first I wasn’t rooting for their romance. Sometimes the pacing was slow, but it is never boring because the hijinks were hilarious! XD

I didn’t like how they keep throwing-in angsty cliffhangers in many episodes towards the ending, which makes the story felt drawn-out, but in the end it was very heartwarming. Overall, it was quite a fun watch!

One time watch worthy

What I liked:
-Interesting Plot:"Aytical Family" weaves a captivating storyline that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. The narrative intricacies are compelling and draw you into the characters' lives.

- **Second Couple (Teen Couple):** The dynamics of the teen couple were particularly enjoyable. Their youthful romance brought a refreshing contrast to the more serious main plot.

- **No Excessive Twists:** Unlike many dramas that rely heavily on convoluted twists and turns, "Aytical Family" maintained a straightforward storyline. This approach kept the drama believable and easy to follow, enhancing the viewing experience.

**What I Didn't Like:**

- **Bit Slow:** At times, the pacing felt a little sluggish. Certain scenes dragged on longer than necessary, which occasionally affected the overall momentum of the drama.

Overall, "Aytical Family" is a solid drama with an engaging plot and charming characters. Despite its slower pace at times, it remains an enjoyable watch, particularly for those who appreciate a balance between drama and romance without an overabundance of plot twists.
