One of the Best Fantasy Romances in a Long Time!!

It is a blessing if you find someone who loves you selflessly, without any expectations!!

The story leans more towards self discovery rather than just romance. Two individuals from different walks of life meet, connect with each other, face impossible situations and ultimately fall in love. One is a mortal, whilst the other is a spirit. The chances of them falling in love is a rarity. Starring Dilraba Dilmurat & Arthur Chen in lead roles, “Love beyond the Grave” is a love story that challenges time, tide and extends beyond that. Dilraba stars in never-seen-before role, as the Sovereign of Spirits; rather cold hearted and ruthless, she rules the Void with an iron fist. Arthus stars as Duan Xu, a young general who is trying to find his standing, so he can win over the territories seized by their enemy empire. They meet under unexpected circumstances and gravitate towards each other. Their romance is fraught with struggles, yearning and absolute longing.

drama had gripped

I absolutely loved this drama!! I’m big fan of ML, his acting is always so sincere. the FL honestly she’s never been my favorite but this performance completely redeemed her for me. 10/10.
the special fx were TEA!!! so beautiful and cinematography on point!!
the story sometime seemed to hit lulls but somehow added more depth to the bond between the leading couple. I was so invested I was crying so hard during the sad parts. like straight ugly cry 😂 Definitely a slow burn but a very gentle but also powerful romance story. will definitely rewatch one day!!

Role Reversals

WARNING: major spoilers

Love Beyond The Grave hasn't surpassed Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (TMOP) as my favorite, but it's definitely one of the best xianxias. Many asian drama actors/actresses are good looking, but aside from that, it's equally important to be convincing in the type of roles they play. Dilraba Dilmurat does not just look like a goddess, she acts like one. While I've enjoyed her performance as the girlish and cute Feng Jiu, I think He Simu is her best role to date, because it is in this role that she shows the most range. Her facial expressions go from cute and playful in one scene to cold and vicious the next. There is an episode where she plays her own doppelganger which shows that she can also play a crazy character. Her sitting on a throne as the sovereign of the Ghost World feels right, because she has a commanding and regal presence. Her character is also filled with contrasts. When discovering the senses and enjoying the mortal world she appears almost childlike. When dueling with other spirits in their yearly tournament, she is all powerful, but just...allowing each immortal, even when defeated, to surrender and try again next year. She also respects their wishes if it's a duel to the death they want.

I used to think Arthur Chen was cold and stiff, but I really like him as the playful and cunning Duang Xu. This cheerful type of sly male lead suits him and he is both dashing and dynamic. I like how the drama does not diminish the male lead, even if it emphasizes that the female lead is more powerful. When he's in his element as an army general, he is shown as effective in winning wars (sometimes even single handedly and alone in an enemy camp); he's also ruthless as an assassin and I thought it interesting that he fought like a berserker in some scenes and wasn't afraid to get bloodied and dirty. The story also shows that he is at a severe disadvantage when dealing with immortals and is very vulnerable, which makes sense. It would have been too unbelievable if he could suddenly stand toe to toe with hundred something old spirits who have been cultivating power for ages. That type of plot armor I do not care for. What's good is that, even if he's almost always at a losing end when dealing with immortals, he still handles himself well. When he enters the ghost world, he is able to take down two zombies using a magical sword. Later, he is able to defend himself (even for a few minutes) against Yan Ke, the main antagonist, using the same weapon Eventually, he does get help from a sorcerer. The male lead suffers a lot in the series, but he is able to accomplish everything he sets out to do, whether it's winning the female lead's heart or regaining back the 17 lands that were taken by the enemy. He gets a lot of help along the way, but in a way that is believable and human.*

One of the things this xianxia has which makes it different from others is the role reversal. There are scenes where the male lead actually gets himself in trouble (in stupid shoujo girl style) so the female lead can rescue him (which she does, she even literally carries him out of trouble) ; the villain Yanke is basically a white lotus (a male Sujin) who is over-the-top but very entertaining to watch (how can you doubt he is the bad guy when he literally has black smoke coming out him- like Sujin he basically loses it as a result of being unable to accept rejection from the one he likes); there are scenes in the Ghost World where all the dancers are male and all the customers being served/massaged are female.

I like how LBTG also looks different. In other xianxias like TMOP or LBFAD (Love Between Fairy and Devil), the world of immortals looks like how one would imagine heaven, with white clouds and set in the sky. The spirit world in LBTG, which is called The Void, is set in the bottom of the ocean. It is dark with bright lights. Everything looks luxurious, but corrupt. There is a curfew because zombies roam the world at night; there is an element of horror about it. There are dark forests, an immortal prison in a mountain overseen by a large, Sauron-like eye, main streets that resemble the underworld in that pixar movie, Coco...and yet, the Void looks like an Asian version of blade runner, with eastern style palaces and bright lanterns. I'm not necessarily implying that it had a better design than other shows, only that it was unique in its own way. Not just in terms of the set design, but also in the way the characters behaved. In other xianxias, all the other immortals are depicted as afraid of the King of Heaven and they never go against him. In the Void, He Simu fends off daily assassination attempts by other immortals, not to mention the yearly tournament designed to unseat her.

The OST in this drama is also one of the best I've heard. The catchy, upbeat tune somehow made things more exciting.

One of the flaws of this drama are its endings. There are actually two happy endings...the problem is that the first ending is cut short. It's a common theme in xianxias for an immortal or a mortal to die and then to resurrect. But when they resurrect, it's usually as a lower life form. In LBFAD, Orchid dies and then resurrects into a plant. DongFeng resurrects into a bone bracelet. They cultivate in this form for years before they are able to take on their human appearance. LBTG's first ending follows this established Xianxia trope where newly dead beings become jellyfish like creatures before taking human shape. There is a minor character, a human general who died saving his village, but when we see him, he is already in his human spirit form. One can assume that he didn't take this form at first. It would have been better if they showed the spirit of Duang Xu getting to cultivate into his human spirit form, just like they did with the other characters, so he can reunite properly with He Simu and they can live their spiritual afterlife together.

The second ending is the one that is canonically accurate to the book, where He Simu becomes a human (which is technically all she wanted) and lives out her life with Duang Xu. I honestly don't have a problem with this version either, since this is the author's intention.

When I first saw the trailer for this drama, I didn't think there would be any chemistry between the leads (I don't usually go for noona romance) but surprisingly, there was. Arthur and Dilreba are adorable when they finally get together. Their characters also suffer a lot. Duang Xu suffers as a result of sacrificing his senses for He Simu. He Simu ends up killing someone who tries to hurt Duang Xu and as a result, loses her powers for 5 years and gets imprisoned by the obsessive Yan Ke. Given that they suffered enough for their love, the happy endings (especially in the first version) should have been clearer.

Very Interesting Drama - Spirits and Humans

Spirit Master He Si Mu / Xiao Xiao (Dilraba Dilmurat) was great. She had so many challenges from extreme loneliness to betrayal to awakening senses to love. She was great in every aspect of this drama. This may have been her best acting to date. General Duan Xu (Arthur Chen) was very good. He delivered great battle scenes and fights. He single-handedly destroyed the enemy army of over 200 thousand soldiers. He brought Spirit Master's five senses to life by sharing them with her. Yan Ke (Miles Wei) was so good with his acting. He wanted Spirit Master He Si Mu's heart, but he could never get her love. It drove him mad that she loved a human, but not him. One of my favorite characters was Jiang Ai (Zhang Li); she was fun and she stuck up for the human Duan Xu. She always mentioned him to Spirit Master He Si Mu to stir up her feelings for him. Duan Xu and Yan Ke had a few scuffles between them, mostly because Yan Ke was so jealous of He Si Mu's love for Duan Xu. He Si Mu really tried not to fall in love with the human, Suan Xu, but his love and senses made her fall in love with him. She helped him whenever he needed her, but she was hurt that he did not call her name when he was in trouble. She destroyed Yan Ke, who had previously trapped her in her spirit room. She did break out and showed him that her power was still much greater than his. The wedding between Spirit Master He Si Mu and Duan Yu was a spectacular sight. They had their wedding in the spirit realm and the other spirits seemed very happy with the pairing. They even mentioned that the bride and groom were a match made in heaven. Duan Yu gave Spirit Master He Si Mu all five of his senses as a betrothal present. She gave up her position as spirit master. He Si Mu and Duan Xu spent time alone, before he died. She was so distraught with grief that she froze the surrounding area with ice. She decided that she would not bury him with her over twenty-two former lovers, but next to her parent's tomb. She would travel the mortal realm. The spirit of duan Xu found its way to He Si Mu and they travelled together. She hoped that the spirit was his and that he would one day come back as human. The rewatch value of this drama is very high.

Unfortunately, mediocre all around . . .

The premise is intriguing with He Si Mu in the power position as the head of all spirits, toying with a human general and then falling in love with him.

But, that's the only intriguing thing about it. There doesn't seem to be much overarching plot or themes. On the acting, I don't buy that Arthur Chen is a general who has killed 100s of people, I don't see any chemistry between the two main leads. The cinematics and aesthetics are a bit off putting and ugly.

I really wanted something to watch so I was forcing myself to give this a try, but it's really not worth it. I'm dropping.

planning to watch this drama?

The CGI looks decent, but the story is a mess. The plot feels very weak and the direction is poor.

The main leads fall in love too fast without reason. Their romance feels like lacks of real emotional spark.

Supporting characters are useless and confusing not sure why they are here. This drama just about to uses famous actors/actress just to bait fans. Just watch 3 episode you will feel the same.

Not going to waste my time further to watch this.

Dilraba the gorgeous Spirit Lord!

Watched all 5 episodes and kinda regretting it cause of the WAITING ugh!

Really liking this story, good so far. She is the Spirit Lord that has lost her five senses, and she nailed the detached portrayal of her character.

She isn't human, has never known warmth, cold, pain, nothing. And her character shows us all of it! That quiet longing, and curiosity on what it will feel like to be alive, what it would feel like to experience someone's touch.

I also liked her pretentious acting in front of Duan Xu because it shows she's trying to entertain both him and herself lol

Dunno why everybody is hating on her acting lmao 🤣 she is a spirit with no senses and has never had much human interaction.
She is supposed to be aloof and floating around mid-air laughing at mortal things. She is a diety and portrayed as such.
I'm enjoying it!

Let's see how her relationship with the fake kid brother and a possible lover goes!

I'm pretty sure Captain Han is the real Duan Xu or atleast someone who is knowledgeable about North Chong 🤔 but then the question remains....

Who is the guy wearing General Duan Xu face?? Is he a spirit trapped within? He's got his own curse maybe...something that He Simu has in common?

Hmm...questions and more questions! I'm intrigued 🤔

Nothing special

The story could have been interesting but somehow its very blant and really nothing new. Another show that caters to a certain group of viewers. The entire senses storyline could have been interesting but its just really weird. Its supposed to be a major part of the story but the executing is sloppy and dragged out. Please stop making 40 ep dramas when you have to fill it with nonsense to meet the episode mark!!!

The acting is okay on all fronts - not good but also not bad. Sometimes they made me cringe but I guess thats the poor writing.

The writing..... I know its based on a novel but damn do they only have the overly powerful FL and bootlicking ML novels left?
Can we for once have a normal show with equals? The ML insantly falling for the FL for no reason at all is overdone and stupid.

The characters are very bland - FL doing nothing and sometimes interfering with stuff but at the end of the day it really doesnt matter if she is there or not.
ML starting off as a strong character but turns smitten and kinda dumb really quick.

Cinematography and sets....... the "outside" sets are so bad like the graveyard.... you could tell those stones are styrofoam and everything looked so fake and plastic.

CGI is very special in this one either its off the charts good or so bad that it is actually ridiculous. FL entrance in ep 1 with the Jellyfish looked like high quality but everything after that was laughable - her doing magic looked like a shitty version of elsa but the worst part are the broom scenes - you can literally tell where the ropes are attached in every shot. And they didnt even felt the need to blend it with the background. Literally looks like she is sitting infront of a picture.....

Also that type of makeup doesnt really suit Reba. But in all her recent shows she has locked off. Doesnt look like the Reba I swooned for.

Lastly even tho I watched 10 episodes the chemistry was only okay and not that great. For some reason they dont look very good together. The entire thing isnt romantic at all - this weird ass toxic tsundere type of shit needs to stop.

Confusing and messy

Quite confused with the plot. FL was supposed to
be without the 5 senses and yet she could see
and hear right from the get-go. It seemed she was only lacking sense of touch, smell, taste and not all 5 senses. Her not killing Chang was out of character given how she was supposed to be a strict sovereign. I really enjoyed episodes 1-9 and starting from when she gained ML's sense of touch, things went downhill. FL going from being the cool bad-ass sovereign to being a giddy childlike mortal was such a turnoff. Other people dropped after episodes 16 and 28. Midway thru episode 11, I was starting to think about dropping it too. Wouldn't wanto force myself to watch something when there are so many many more other dramas to watch. I like both the main actors and it's really such a shame they were given a project with messy writing.

I started Love Beyond the Grave with normal expectations, but the first four episodes completely won me over. The story feels fresh and emotionally gripping, with a slow, immersive build that makes every moment land. By episode four, I was already hooked and genuinely invested in the characters.

The cinematography is beautiful—every frame feels intentional, with soft, moody visuals that perfectly match the tone of the story. It adds a haunting charm that makes the drama stand out.

The cast is another big highlight. The leads share effortless chemistry, and their performances feel subtle and real rather than exaggerated. Overall, it’s a solid 9.5/10 so far. If it keeps this consistency, it’s easily one of the most promising dramas right now.
