Khemjira – My Final Review (3 Months Later)

Three months ago, I wrote a review after watching the first episode of KhemJira, completely blown away by its start. The production, the acting, the atmosphere—everything screamed 8.9–9 material already. I couldn’t understand how anyone was rating it low unless it was out of petty fan politics. Back then, I said, “If the rest of the series keeps this momentum, we’re looking at something truly memorable.”

Now that I’ve finished it, I can confidently say: it did keep that momentum—and even exceeded it.

From start to finish, KhemJira is one of the most captivating series I’ve seen this year. The story is so well written, and the acting is just phenomenal. Every emotional beat lands, and the chemistry only grows stronger with time. I’ve tried to find something to complain about, but honestly, it’s near impossible.

A lot of people commented on the horror element fading midway through, but that’s actually one of the most logical progressions in the story. At that point, Khem was living with Master Peem, who was protecting him spiritually. Of course, the haunting would stop—he was no longer vulnerable the way he was before. It’s not inconsistency; it’s development.

And let’s talk about the OSTs again—because not a single one misses. They’re stunning, atmospheric, and emotional. I actually made a mixed playlist of all the KhemJira songs because they blend so beautifully together.

The ending left me with such a strange, indescribable feeling—bittersweet in the best way. It was happy, but it still lingered with me long after the final scene.

KhemJira was an experience. And honestly, I don’t think any other company could have delivered it the way Domundi did. They absolutely outdid themselves.

It could be much better but..

It took me a while to collect my courage since horror is definitely not my forte, and if you can relate this, then let me tell you that ep 1, 2 & 9 is the only scary part. So, you don't have to worry too much about it.

Tbh, horror genre is quite new in BL entertainment, so I might put a lil bit of high hope in this one, and I have to say that I feel a lot of disappointment in this one..

1. There's too much side character storyline that I wish they could prolong. Cutting them short just to fit everything in 12 eps were kinda leaving the audience hanging and confuse. (You can clearly see this at the end when one of the character ask the questions to the other people)

2. The storyline itself.. is too slow. I know that this series is mainly focuses in Ramphueng and Khem but the romance is also a genre of the series and it started to get bloom around ep 7 which is more than half of the series. The ghost itself also rarely appeared in the early eps, and started to get heavy at the end, makes me thinking that you can easily skipped the whole series in half (started on ep 7) and still be able to understand the whole series.

3. The ending of Ramphueng.. killed my mood. I don't know if the others would love that kind of ending but not me. The fact that she have hurt a lot of people during her existence as a ghost, I feel like it should be more than that. This part really makes me wanna drop the series right away, making me rethinking my whole life decision in starting the series.

I know it can be much better as it's basically not about the cast skill or series production, but more towards the plot itself.. Due to their beautiful location and settings choice, the ost is quite pleasant to hear (ofc, casting the singer couple as the 2nd lead) and the acting of Namping is soo good, the way he switched between a few roles, and also Keng, the way he express his emotion, when he cried and feel too much of his emotion.. I must say, both of them just debut but it makes me wondering if it is just a lil white lies?

But still, for me, it's totally not worth to rewatch (unless you want to see the certain scenes), and I wish the company can give another series that's much better than this storyline to the couple. They have so much potential and it's definitely shouldn't be wasted.

Khemjira - BL Horror that Broke Me

Tropes: horror, paranormal, ghost story, I see dead people, countryside setting, shamanistic rituals, tsundere/sunshine, paladin/damsel

Triggers: jump scares, blood, horror, obsession, child endangerment, child loss, infanticide

Summary

The story of a boy laboring under a curse, haunted by ghosts and demons, who’s family, found family, friends and lover all try to help him through various spiritual and physical means. While horror is not my genre, I’m very glad that I gave this a chance. This is a diaphanous magical BL of the kind that only really comes along once a year these days (with lingering notes of I Feel You Linger in the Air rather than any actual BL horror I could name). I’m not sure it’s going to be much of a rewatch for me, but I admire its (and its actors) otherworldly beauty, cultural relevancy, and elegant execution and impact.

If someone asks me to recommend a ghost story BL, this is now the first one I’m reaching for. To climb to a pinnacle in such a crowded market is high praise indeed.

Standing in the Zeitgeist

I normally would have waited and binged this, but I'm glad I watched it week-to-week. It elevated the end of summer 2025 in a way that will not be soon forgotten, partly because it held its own against the outrageously loud ridiculousness of Revenge Love and Desire in a sentimental yet quietly refined way.

What is most remarkable about Khemjira is that is had so many people in a chokehold during its run. We have had quite a bit of BL horror before, but it was this show that struck a gold vein of public appeal, even outside of BL devotees.

Cast & Character

I'm going to give props to Domundi, they cast Khemjira perfectly. After a string of poor offerings based on existing branded pairs, they took two of their newer couples and front loaded this show with a perfect combination of talent (unexpected) and optics (expected).

And while I, personally, wasn't wild about the archetypes and dynamic of the lead pair (stern paladin + imperiled ingenue doesn't do it for me), the secondaries were all glorious and contrasted enough to give chronic BL watchers like me something to latch onto.

Not to mention the fact that the sides were also given character development, backstories, and enough screen time to carry the weight of fan interest (if the leads didn't engage).

All of which I to say, this was a very well-balanced offering, with production, cast, and script being equally great.

The Horror Conundrum

I, who does not like horror at all, found that this one's reliance on makeup and acting over advanced special effects (or high concept) more "down-home amusement park" than actually scary. But your milage may vary.

For me it was not the horror component, but the attention to detail, particularly historical and cultural, and the thorough glimpse into Northern Thai shamanistic traditions that engaged the most.

However, I cannot deny that all other aspects of this show were also of a particularly high quality, including its scary narrative.

Final Thoughts

Not only was Khemjira a unique Thai BL in quality of story, it's handling of intimacy was also special. This is a high heat show, but it is very classy about it. The NC scenes were different from normal expectations, plus very hot, with extended air time, and very well done.

Finally, and most importantly for me, Khemjira really really REALLY stuck the landing. The final episode is truly spectacular and worth watching towards. It would have gotten an 8/10 from me, but the ending was just so wonderful, it earned that 9 honestly at the last gasp.

In conclusion, even if you don't like horror, you might want to give this show a chance.

I genuinely do not say that lightly.

The overall score of the first 2 ep

Despite the fact that "Khemjira" has only just started airing, I already believe that this series will be a success! The actors are well-chosen and very similar to the characters in the novel. I also can't help but notice their visual appearance. The series is beautifully shot and features pleasant colors, as well as spine-chilling music. It immediately immerses you in the atmosphere of a Thai village and its traditions. I love how everything unfolds gradually, allowing my thoughts to coalesce into a cohesive narrative. I highly recommend watching this series.

Could have been amazing but....

Oh where do I even start from?

Khemjira should have been my favourite show this season because I adore anything supernatural/horror/bl but it left me with conflicting feelings.

Let's start from the positives:

The music was amazing. I literally cannot express how much I adore Mantra. I think this was the best part of the whole show.

The plot was interesting and a nice break from all the stereotypical BLs. I also liked the fact that they icluded so much Thai lore and culture. The multiple reincarnations were also interesting to me.

Some of the side characters were very interesting, especially the villain. Her back story was so heavy and interesting, explaining her motives perfectly. Additionally, I really loved the second couple,.

The acting of some of the actors was amazing. I especially liked the Villain, the female Khem and the Peem's brother from his previous life. The second couple actors were also very talented.

Now for the bad...

The main couple. There, I said it. The main couple was, i think, the worst part of this. I don't know what went wrong. The characters were so one dimensional, I couldn't really see them as real people. They almost seemed soulless. The acting? Not that good. There were some scenes that I was so frustrated by the lack of emotion it made me want to stop watching. Khem getting tortured? He was emotionless. Khem almost getting killed? Barely blinked. Khem believing that peem was going to die? Blank expression. I needed him to cry, scream, do something instead of just standing there looking pretty while a tear rolled down his face. Was the actor so inexperienced? Did he not want to look ugly or something? Real humans don't just have blank expressions when sad or scared. Same for Peem. He didn't even cry when he watched the person he loves getting tortured. They also never convinced me that they were in love. The only times that I actually saw some emotion were surprisingly the NC scenes. I don't know what happened but the acting there seemed so much better.

Well, thats it overall. I hope the actors improve because they are both stanning.

Overall, an enjoyable watch mainly because of the supernatural elements and the side characters.

boring

This BL is far from being my favorite one this year…

Personally, I think they chose the wrong novel to introduce a new DMD couple. Why do I say that? Simply because this story seriously lacks Boys Love. For me, the main couple had absolutely no chemistry probably because the story itself didn’t help. It honestly felt like I was watching Ari Aster’s Midsommar.

The story drags on for 12 episodes, each almost two hours long, and in my opinion, much of the series had nothing to fill that amount of time, making the BL feel slow and boring most of the time.

What I didn’t like:

Acting:

Namping: He still needs a lot of training and acting lessons to become a convincing actor. In this BL, there are about three scenes where the supposed love of his life is nearly dying, and he just keeps that blank expression — it was driving me crazy. He’s also really dull in the romantic scenes.

Keng: Didn’t impress me either, but compared to Namping, at least he tries. Especially in the romantic scenes, he acts in a more passionate way.

Tle and FirstOne: I don’t think they’re acting geniuses, but they made the show more bearable for the viewers. The main couple was just too boring, bland, and chemistry-free. I had seen a previous BL with them and liked it much more.

Episode Length:

Way too long, and several of them had nothing interesting going on to justify nearly two hours. It became dragging and tiring.

Past Lives:

We find out the protagonists are connected through past lives, but honestly, I think that plot point only made their lack of chemistry worse. It felt like they were obligated to be together in the present.

Story:

I found it very dull and slow. Scary? Not at all especially for people used to horror movies.

Characters:

Characters often act in ways that make no sense none of them felt consistent.

What I liked:

Culture:

This BL shows a bit of Thai culture — chants, traditions — and I found that part really interesting.

Production Value:

You can clearly tell there was investment in this BL.

Special Effects:

Also very well done.

Music:

I liked it too.

Ramphueng:

The actress who played the ghost definitely delivered the best performance in the series.

It's amazing.

I personally really enjoyed watching this series. It was really worth the wait. I loved it I loved it. it captured so many emotions and honestly.. the series will always have a special place in my heart. Its often hard for me to find a good BL that really captures my attention, buut this one really did. Its really worth watching. I cant believe that it is over, tthe waiting every week for a new episode... the excitment, the emotions. I will really miss it.. even though i can rewatch it, it's still not going to be the same.. but i really loved the series. <3

A Series So Boring It Should Come With a Sleeping Pill Warning

After watching two episodes, it's already possible to draw some conclusions. Honestly, it's a waste of time. The acting is terrible, the plot is very weak, and don’t even get me started on the special effects. The episodes are long—more like full-length movies—but incredibly boring. There's a ton of advertising, and ironically, it's filmed better than the show itself... The series doesn’t really evoke any emotions or feelings... To sum it up, there’s almost nothing good about it, except for the attractive actors—but that’s not what I’m looking for when I watch something.

The story could’ve been developed better.

Well, this is the story about a character named Khem, whose family is cursed, and who is destined to die when he turns 21. Because of that, he decides to seek help from a shaman to banish the demon from his life and survive. The premise is actually interesting, especially for those who enjoy horror and suspense stories.

The problem lies in how the plot unfolds. The shaman quickly starts creating obstacles instead of helping Khem. So, what does the viewer expect from that? That the main character will look for other alternatives but no. Instead, we get tedious scenes of the character washing dishes, working as a house servant. We spend long stretches watching scenes from past lives showing that the two already had some kind of connection. It’s the kind of plot I personally don’t like.

I felt the story lacked substance, especially considering that each episode is almost two hours long. The acting is really poor, especially from Namping. The other actor isn’t great either, but people always use the excuse that he’s supposedly handsome to justify never taking any acting classes.

The positive side is that DMD is investing in its BL series, unlike its competitor GMMTV, which is becoming more and more disappointing by focusing on so-called heterosexual series. The story lacked rhythm, and the episodes should have been condensed to 40 minutes at most.
The romance part is also weak and practically nonexistent..

Pretty disappointing

I blame my high expectations.
I expected too much and ended up with crumbs.

Now I'm not saying that this is a bad show per se, it's actually the best quality domundi had ever made, but still it's not flawless and not at all deserves this high rating.

Now I shall say what I liked and didn't like about this.

1- acting: everyone was amazing and I was really impressed by Keng, the first scene he appears in was spectacular, and the way he carries his character till the end was really good, also side characters were amazing specially FirstOne and Tle.

On the other hand, Namping was terrible, and I'm really sorry to say that, but him being the MAIN character is a heavy weight I'm not sure he is ready to carry yet, and I'm more sorry to judge him like that but the show is in his character name, mate literally just standed there, said the bare minimum he has too little script to deliver, his hands are glued to his side, he walks without moving his arms at all, and his shoulders are slightly up as if someone spilled cold water on him in the middle of December's winter, with little to no facial expressions at all, so I'm absolutely and utterly disappointed that Domundi focused on improving the show quality and yet this is who they decided to give the role of Khemjira to.

2-story: the beginning was amazing really catches your attention, but after a few episodes everything is so random, we have things that happens thoughtlessly, where is the ghost? What is she doing? Why did she stop harassing him? No answers, also some inconsistency in the plot like they are at school but don't attend it, and then we learn that they are on a break but once Khem decide to go back on a whim, he is back to school again like this part is confusing, and the end was really really anticlimactic, like a monk and a few chantings? Why didn't they do that earlier!! Why didn't they solve that grudge before it got to this point, and how was he alive all that time, if she is that strong why couldn't she take revenge earlier?

I skipped some other illogical things because they are necessary for the plot, still I couldn't help but having them spinning in the back of my head while watching.

3- characters: I said that a billion time before but personally it's hard to like a show if I hate one of the main characters, and here I didn't like both, I could stand Peem slightly more than Khem because of Keng, but he still was annoying in some parts, like mate why are you complicating everything? And Khem, why are you so damn pushy!!? Khem's character is just so ridiculous too, I know he has a female name, but I didn't know that he was also brought up as one!! He is so mushy, that's not someone surrounded by ghosts and scary stuff his whole life!! That is a 10YO girl, but it's a Domundi thing to cast the Uke as too feminine character, I just want to say if you really want a feminine MC, just cast a woman!! ALL female characters were so pretty and MORE masculine than Khemjira, he was the most feminine out of all the female characters in the show.
And that is not a compliment.

Am I being too harsh? Maybe, it's just too average and I expected too much that's why I'm slightly pissed off and disappointed tbh.
This had a few good things too, like Mix doppelganger and his blind lover, they were so sweet, actually FirstOne is the reason I continued watching, sadly I can't seem to be happy enough about any other tiny thing I enjoyed to write them down.

Lastly, lower your expectations and watch it. I would not necessarily suggest it if someone asks me about a show, but if you are contemplating whether to watch it or not, just give it a try, you may like it more than I did.

A supernatural joy

Let me start by saying I wish Khemjira had committed to being a character. He didn't do anything except over act about ghost that clearly he has been seeing all his life so I dont get why is is acting surprise they are around him all the time. He does the damsel in distress and cry way to much and his character feels like he never grows and is always asking for help throughout the entire show, I find him to be boring and lacking of any interest. he had almost no agency and it was lowkey so hard to watch. he became a walking, sometimes talking damsel in distress trope. so so so sad to see especially as so many other characters were really intriguing. I love the story idea and I loved Peem and jet. Chan I did not think was needed to be an add on. I just Wish they did a better job with the Khem character he was just not likable and I sadly did not feel the chemistry between the leads that i was hoping for. I enjoyed everything else about the series was fun and supernatural and great put together.
