From Exams to Epic Fights: Study Group is the School Drama We Didn't Know We Needed!
If you’re looking for a drama that keeps you entertained from start to finish, Study Group is the one. It’s got everything—comedy, crazy fight scenes, heartwarming friendships, and just the right amount of chaos. The show takes the usual high school setting and flips it on its head, giving us an adrenaline-packed story about a student who doesn’t just study hard but fights just as hard to survive in a gangster-ridden school. The way this drama manages to incorporate the webtoon is insane. The fight scenes all feel directly out of a comic book or an anime, giving everything a fun and interesting feel. Also whenever Ga-Min used his uncle's forbidden fighting techniques, it felt too surreal and amazing (yes I barely have words to describe this😅😭)
>Plot & Concept
Yoon Ga-min (played by Hwang Minhyun) might look like your typical nerd, but he’s anything but ordinary. He believes in the philosophy that a strong body means a strong mind, so while other students hit the books, he’s also hitting the gym—and his opponents. Studying in the infamous Ancheon High, where fists matter more than grades, Ga-min trains to protect himself and his friends while still aiming for academic success. This unique combination of school life and martial arts makes Study Group stand out. It’s not just about exams; it’s about survival, teamwork, and outsmarting enemies in the most thrilling ways.
>Perfectly Paced (But Too Short!)
One of the best things about this drama is its pacing. Unlike the usual 16-episode, hour-long format that sometimes drags, Study Group keeps things tight with 10 episodes at 45 minutes each. It never feels slow or stretched out, and every episode has a purpose. That said, it ended way too soon! Just when I was fully invested in these characters and their crazy schemes, the drama wrapped up, leaving me wanting way more.
>Characters That Absolutely Slayed
The cast of Study Group is honestly one of its biggest strengths. Every single character brings something unique to the table, and the actors nailed their roles.
-Yoon Ga-min (Hwang Minhyun) – Our main guy is a total paradox: book-smart yet street-tough. His dedication to both studying and fighting makes him such an interesting lead, and Hwang Minhyun plays him with the perfect mix of determination and vulnerability.
-Pi Hanul (Cha Woomin) – Let’s talk about Pi Hanul because wow. He had that cold, psychotic energy that made every scene he was in instantly better. His intense gaze, his confidence, and the way he carried himself? Absolute perfection. I need to see Cha Woomin in more villainous or unhinged roles ASAP!
-Lee Hyunwoo (Park Yoonho) – Now, here’s where I have a complaint: Hyunwoo deserved way more screen time! He was such a cool character, but we barely got to see him shine. Definitely one of my favorites, and I really wish the drama had given him more to do.
-Choi Heewon (Yoon Sang Jung) – The cutest member of the study group, hands down. She brought a fun, lighthearted energy to the series and made everything feel more real.
-Ga-min & Se-hyeon’s Friendship (Lee Jonghyun) – Their bond was honestly so wholesome. They had each other’s backs in such a genuine way, and their dynamic made the drama even better.
>The Amazing OST
First of the OST by zb1 was so good?! Like the minute it came on I was hyped up and was ready to enjoy the drama. It was just so good!
>Final Thoughts
Study Group is one of those dramas that hooks you in and doesn’t let go. It’s got just the right balance of action, humor, and emotional moments, and it introduces a bunch of talented actors who deserve way more recognition. The only real downside? It ended too soon. If they ever announce a second season (which they totally should), I’ll be first in line to watch it.
If you want a school drama that’s not just about romance and exams but also has insane fight scenes, epic friendships, and a fresh take on survival in high school, Study Group is an absolute must-watch!

Midterms might not kill you. These kids will.
I started this drama thinking the reduced episode count meant an easy binge. Spoiler: it didn’t. Not because it was bad—on the contrary, it’s alarmingly good—but because each episode felt like getting body-slammed by a bowl of spaghetti. With extra tomato sauce. Everywhere. Since I already have a strong aversion to tomato-based anything, this drama was less “watchable entertainment” and more “sensory trauma with subtitles.” At one point, I literally paused mid-episode and asked myself, “Is this drama or just glorified punishment?” The answer depended on how soaked in red the screen was.But I couldn’t walk away. The story is gripping. So gritty, I half-expected sandpaper to be listed in the props department. If any of this was inspired by a real school setting, I need those institutions flagged, tagged, and erased from Google Maps. The violence wasn’t just frequent—it was structured, institutionalized, and somehow more punctual than the morning bell. Yet under all the bruises and hallway brawls, there’s an unexpected pulse of sincerity. I found myself caring when the characters stopped long enough to talk about something deeper than revenge or test scores.
Casting-wise, Hwang Min Hyun as Yun Ga Min is a bullseye. He nails that unassuming, quiet intensity—someone who’ll solve equations by day (abysmally) and crack skulls by night (astonishingly). Admittedly, I did mistake him for Cha Eun Woo in the beginning. Not my proudest K-drama fan moment, but let’s be honest, one soft lighting setup and half the cast starts to blend into each other like a visual group project. Still, Min Hyun brought gravitas to the chaos, even when I started side-eyeing the production team for making some of those fight scenes a bit too… stylish. Like, are we selling justice or launching a blood-splattered fashion line?
And yet—amid the trauma Olympics—they actually study. Like, real books. Real effort. That sliver of academic earnestness kept me going. Study Group might be wrapped in violence, but its core is underdog warmth. These kids want more than to win a fight—they want a future. It wasn’t an easy watch, but it was a worthwhile one. Bloody, bonkers, and strangely moving.

The Action Packed Series I Needed In My Life
I had been down a c-trauma spiral, so Study Group was exactly what I needed to break up the sadness and get myself excited about a series. The action is *chef's kiss* -- hello the flaming backpack?! I really enjoyed the chemistry between the cast too, you're rooting for them right from the start. My only minor issue with this show is that I can't believe it took a substitute teacher to take down Lil Tony Soprano over there. I know this is a group of students who are typically overlooked, so people turned a blind eye to what was happening, but still, good lord. Overall, I loved this series and I wouldn't be mad if they picked back up and gave us a college study group adventure! Was this review helpful to you?

Anime except make it live action and Korean
I just finished this show and I honestly was conflicted on how to score it at first. I cannot deny that I was laughing my ass off and my jaw dropped a few times whilst watching it, but I have to take the quality of writing into consideration when writing a review. What I liked:
- Soundtrack was pretty good. I mean, rap is not my preferred taste in music, but it was still good at hyping me up and making scenes feel more energetic than what they really were; so it accomplished its goal very well.
- Production was fantastic. I really loved the settings and how they switched them up so often. I especially loved the graffitied school contrasting with the clean looks of stores and other settings. It really emphasized how alien the school feels from the rest of the world as we see it. The cinematography was good too; cameraman deserves a raise for engaging me 100% during those whacky fight scenes.
- Fight choreography was insanely hilarious to watch at times, and then badass at other times too. I really enjoyed how creative they could get with making tons of fight scenes feel unique from each other.
- Some of the casting like Ms. Lee, Han Ul, Han Ul's zesty friend with a gun, Sun Cheol, Ji Wu, Hyeon Wu, Se Hyeon, and Ga Min's mom were great.
- Ji Wu and Hyeon Wu look eerily similar like I actually believed they were twins. I swear they have to secretly be related.
- Pi Han Ul was eye candy. I love me a pretty faced villain. His voice was also free ASMR. So + 1 point for that.
- Geon Yeop was eye candy.
- Hee Won's parents were eye candy.
- Ga Min's mom not being the generic KDrama mother.
- Somewhat competent police force.
- A lot of the comedic scenes made me genuinely laugh.
- Side character and one-off character casting was pretty good. Shoutout to the Ice Age Baby combined with Sid looking guy from like ep 4/5.
- Female characters can be just as strong as male characters.
- Hee Won and Se Hyeon hinted romance.
- Ji Wu and Lee Jun friendship.
- Emphasis on not giving up on people that come from lesser income areas and people that are tended to be forgotten by the system.
- Somehow managed to give personality to each character through what they wear, even differentiating them through how they style their uniforms.
- Used juvenile laws as a plot point.
- Characters can be useful without be blunt fighters.
- Criminals actually get punished by the law.
- Sassy lines.
What I disliked:
- I like Ga Min's actor in general, but he looks way too old to be playing a 16 year old. His wide smile was also hella weird, but I'm inclined to believe that was on purpose to match his social awkwardness so I'll let that slide.
- Way too absurd power scaling. It caused some fights to be awkwardly solved by Ga Min in a way that felt underwhelming at times. Obviously certain fights were great because he just solos them, but when they seemingly do pose a threat he just tanks a few hits like it's nothing and sends them flying low diff.
- Ultimate villain was a high schooler, which isn't an issue in itself, but rather the issue lies with how they want me to believe he got away with all that crime at his age. It was jarring seeing middle aged men working under him to the point that I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. At least Weak Hero Class only made teens lead other teens or work directly under a senior.
- Some teens look like they're in their 30s. Featuring Kim Gyu Jin on that one. I almost spat out what I was drinking when I realized he was just a student like the rest of the cast.
- Physics went flying out the window along with every side villain.
- Never got info about Ga Min's dad. Since we are confirmed to get a season 2, I won't have an issue with this one if they properly explain it there.
- Needed to expand more on Han Ul's backstory. He worked fine as he was, but I wanted to know more about him with his dad and the teacher he got killed.
- "Intimidating" gang is ran by teenagers. Where did they even get all that money from???
- The tone was way too kiddy at times for my liking. Everything feels too black and white morally and it really bothered me at times.
- Han Ul and Ga Min deserved a better final fight. Despise how Ga Min pulled out a final move out of nowhere and knocked him out so quick after getting up. Made the villain feel way too weak for my liking.
- Plot felt too power of friendship and teamwork the more it went along. I hate this trope with a fiery passion after Fairy Tail.
- I wasn't completely convinced of the friend group's comradery. I think some of them lacked chemistry or something.
This show is strongest when using its absurdness for comedy and entertainment value, but falls short on its serious moments as a drawback. I couldn't feel quite invested in the mom getting hospitalized or the grandpa passing away abruptly. I kind of felt something when the teacher died but that's only because of how tragic it seemed when the story shows how depraved the school is. It was also mentioned since early on too. I personally liked when the tone of the story was more set on intense and rocky like in the first two episodes rather than the fluffier and campy later bits. It kind of returns to that feeling near the end when Ms. Lee is about to get jumped at school, but falls short on it because of how quick the threat for her disappears. Twice.
I also couldn't take the villain group seriously at all either. If anything, I liked how pretty Han Ul's voice and face was over how intimidating or eerie he was supposed to be. I don't blame this on the actor, I blame it on the absurd writing they give him in attempts to make him seem threatening. I'm certain his actor could portray him eerily if only he wasn't placed in such a weird position plot wise. His gang is so stupid and they expect me to feel on edge by a bunch of ragtag teens and his (alleged) bestie that acts zesty enough to flirt with Ga Min first meeting and swing around some off brand BB gun? No way. Don't get me wrong now, I thought these idiots were funny as fuck at times and had some hilarious lines, but I couldn't tell them seriously as villains whatsoever. I think it would have worked out better if instead of Han Ul being the leader of some (supposed) high profile group, he works under his father's group instead and is in the midst of growing his own assigned branch under him whilst having ambitions to take over said group once he gains enough influence later in life. It would make a lot more sense if his dad acknowledged his son through his plans of utilizing the juvenile laws to their advantage and incorporating loyal members as early on as high school to join their gang. I would find it more realistic and find Han Ul's personality more believable if he was raised in that setting already exposed to the underworld extremely early on and desire to inherit his father's "empire" out of admiration. But no.....we get a teen that somehow gets loads of cash, convinces others to commit murders for him, convinces others to go to jail for him, and basically runs an entire school whilst barely ever making any appearances in it.
Something I think they could have done better was show Han Ul's "Top 4" or whatever they were called from the last episode more in the school. I like seeing villains that get actively involved in the plot and I was so confused whether these guys even went to Yusung Tech or not because I had never seen them around at all. Zesty hat guy I assumed went to another school but apparently he didn't. I also hated how Han Ul is literally only ever seen just sitting on a school rooftop. I mean, the scene looked cool because it was directed nicely, but it quickly becomes perplexing when you think about how this guy was just sitting up there of all places and not even reading or checking his phone, just staring out into the sun. Like, why? Where was gun guy and why was Han Ul just wasting time instead of building his empire some more? I also wanted to know why gun guy was so close to him compared to everyone else because agreeing to help your friend in murdering teachers and framing teens must take an obscene amount of loyalty, but we never see why he is his right hand man. Especially since he is so hotheaded enough to waste all his bullets against a goon like Se Hyeon. I understand he was arrogant because Se Hyeon looked weak as fuck, but I thought at least the right hand man would be somewhat intelligent. Oh and just as a P.S., I found him saying "If I lose to a loser like this it'll be hella embarrassing" or whatever, to be so fucking funny because I too would be super embarrassed to lose when I brought a BB gun against an unarmed nerd.
I want another season despite how flawed the writing was in this one. I look forward to seeing what villains they'll write this time after how they made Han Ul exit the show. I liked that he got defeated in a "proper" way rather than the anime way of sending him to the hospital or an early grave. Side note: he really should've been hospitalized after Ga Min 12-piece comboed him in their fight. That was some insane plot armor. Even Ga Min was in crutches at least.
I'm excited for more whacky hijinks and hilarious comedy that indicates to me that my humor regressed ten years. Even if this show felt like Weak Hero Class for toddlers, I can't hate it. I'll be back here for season 2!!!

A Hidden Gem in the Action-Drama Genre
This drama is truly one in a million. From the gripping storyline to the intense action sequences and powerful soundtrack, Study Group delivers a thrilling experience that keeps you hooked from start to finish.STORYLINE
It’s a fresh and unique take on the typical school drama. Instead of focusing solely on academic struggles, Study Group turns high school into a battlefield where survival is just as important as passing exams. The mix of action, friendship, and determination makes every episode worth watching. With 16 episodes, the pacing is perfect—never too slow, never rushed—just enough to keep you at the edge of your seat.
CAST
The entire cast was perfectly chosen, from the main leads to the supporting characters. Their chemistry felt natural, making every interaction believable. The way they portrayed their characters brought the show to life, especially the main lead, whose performance was off the charts. The bond between the study group members felt real, making their victories and struggles even more impactful.
OST
The soundtrack in this drama was an absolute masterpiece. It fit the high-energy fight scenes and emotional moments perfectly, enhancing every scene. Whether it was a heart-pounding action sequence or a heartfelt moment between characters, the OST made it all hit harder. Definitely a playlist-worthy soundtrack!
OVERALL RATING
A solid 9.0/10—this drama is an underrated gem. In the long run, Study Group has all the makings of a classic, standing out among other high school dramas with its raw action and emotional depth. If you haven’t watched it yet, you’re seriously missing out!

Overall enjoyable watch
First review so super shortEasy and fun to watch, very good story, beautifully choreographed fight scenes. The story was well paced and kept the viewer engaged. Hwang Min Hyun deserves an award for this role. I also enjoyed Ju Yoen U's acting.
Watch if you are looking for a good story, engaging characters and great fight scenes.

One of the Best Action Comedy kdrama
Study Group perfectly blends action and comedy in the most unexpected way. The show starts strong, and by Epb2 esp the library scene I was hooked. The reactions to Ga Min’s fight were hilarious because he himself was so clueless while trio exaggerated his “legend.”While I usually find it unrealistic when a single human beats up 20 people, this drama somehow made it look so cool. Like “Weak Hero,” it portrays violent students, but with a much lighter tone. The comedy lands every time Hee Won’s first time cursing had me laughing out loud, and the team’s chaotic energy was just gold.
Despite the humor, “Study Group” has heart. There are touching moments like Sun Cheol and his grandfather, Ga Min’s mother unexpected kick, and the emotional funeral scene that genuinely made me tear up. The action choreography, especially the final fight between Pi Han Wool and Ga Min, was wild exaggerated, but satisfying and fun to watch.
Every character shines from the bold Ji Woo (loved that they also showed girl's action scene). It’s not a heavy or emotional drama, but it’s full of energy, loyalty, and fun. Only 10 episodes, and totally binge-worthy. “Study Group” is proof that even a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously can be an absolute blast.

everyone is giving a vibe
Study Group is a refreshing take on the high school drama genre, blending themes of education, friendship, and perseverance. Based on a popular webtoon, the series delivers a compelling story that centers on Gamin, a determined high school student who struggles academically but dreams of succeeding through the power of study groups. What sets this drama apart is its unique mix of intense action scenes and heartfelt character development. The narrative does an excellent job of showcasing the challenges students face in competitive academic environments, including bullying, societal pressure, and self-doubt. The camaraderie among the study group members is heartwarming and inspires viewers to value teamwork and resilience.
Visually, the drama captivates with its clean cinematography, dynamic fight sequences, and symbolic use of color. The performances of the cast are another highlight, with the lead actor delivering a relatable and emotionally nuanced portrayal of Gamin's journey.
While the drama occasionally leans into familiar tropes, its fresh execution and meaningful messages make it a standout. Whether you're a fan of school dramas or looking for an inspiring series with a mix of action and heart, Study Group is well worth your time.

Fun but also "Meh"
Just some thoughts:- Big question: why? What is the point of that sleazy looking rich guy having his little gang full of dumb idiots who don’t study? Like? What? He’s got a gang full of drop-outs like it’s admirable and cool lmao? So dumb?
- Last episode was so annoying with the dumb gangsters lol
- I think Geon Yeop’s character was underutilized, I expected him to have a more interesting arc and to be part of the group more
- Male Lead is so aloof and daft—it gets to a point to be honest.
- Fight scenes are obviously overly dramatic, but fun though.
- Some questionable/illogical things: female teacher being comfortable taking the phone call mid-conversation while three gangsters broke into her apartment? Of course you’ll get knocked out? The fight afterwards in the underground parking lot? Are there usually not security guards and cameras? After all that ruckus, no one came to check? Lol?
--> Fun and entertaining show if you don’t think too much about the logics of it.

A really fun show to relax with after work/school
Not the best of the best Kdrama to exist, but if you want to just watch something that is fun, you should defo watch this. I would say the story is pretty predictable but regardless it's still was a good ride. Also, it's based on a webtoon so, the fights are gonna be unrealistic but who cares? In short, if u want to watch something highschool fight ish definitely give it a go, it's worth it. I really love the OSTs of this show too, sort of nostalgic for some reason, sort of like watching Naruto or smth, if u get what i mean. Was this review helpful to you?
Fight…? STUDY!!!
A student who wants to study among the chaotic and violent schoolmates makes a study group with the help of some new friends and a recently transferred teacher.Strengths:
- The plot itself is nothing unique, but the way it was portrayed made it a good watch.
- As someone who has read the webtoon, the adaptation was good. There were slight modifications to accommodate the live-action feel, but the best part was the highly dramatic scenes were kept as they are.
- The highlight of this drama is definitely the action sequences. Very nicely choreographed and shot.
- The music, especially the opening, is very addictive. The fights are very well equipped with a music score that elevates the scenes.
Weakness:
- Hong Min Ki's character felt underutilized. I wish they had kept his scenes as they were in the webtoon.
- The teacher, for the most part, was okay, but her words and action were inconsistent as the only adult figure among the team.
Overall, an energy-packed watch. Highly recommended if you want to watch something that came straight out of Webtoon.
