JinQi’s face when the commander offers to buy LanXiang. I think this is the first time in his life he has been happy his mother is the excuse. His friend calls him out on his bs but accepts she is not for sale. The Wo pirates in prison have been poisoned and the guard responsible took poison. Somebody is going to great effort to keep things secret. The bad part is that only preliminary questioning took place so the extent of their crimes is still unknown. The commander is banking on clues being left at the guard’s house since so many deaths occurred. The Marquis is so impressed with the maids that he wants to marry a Lin daughter. Mom is overjoyed but daughter is adamantly opposed. He has a daughter that’s eleven and she envisions an ancient man as the groom. It is not helping that Ms Du is taking up all her attention and free time. There is something suspicious about the rash and secondary symptoms and I wonder if Ms Du’s cream is the catalyst. She is supposed to have medical skills and she seems more prone to use her powers for evil. They must keep the head maid’s condition secret or she will be sent away to prevent the young master from catching it. Fortunately a doc caught it in time and Jiu Gao is going to get the medicine. I am hoping the young Lin daughter does not have the same thing. Commander Yuand and Jin Qi are going to investigate the Wo case no matter how high it goes. Lam Xiang is told he never left and she has her story well prepared. He told her she was to shrewd to be a maid. 🤣😁The sisters are noting 2nd daughter’s change as Ms Du takes over and so does Lan Xiang. The expensive stones on the gifted chessboard has a whole new set of questions in Lan Xiang’s mind. There is still no clue what the Du agenda is. Are they spies for whoever is stealing military shipments? It is unclear who they are connected to, but it is somebody wealthy and stealthy. Ms Du has her eye on the Marquis now because the title 2nd daughter wants to throw away, she would be happy to take for her. This episode has 2nd daughter in limelight with an unexpected high tier proposal and a sneaky vixen girl planting seeds of mischief and malcontent and maybe whatever is causing the mysterious rash. The story continues at a good pace and the stellar cast is doing a wonderful job of keeping us engaged. 👏🏻

He's getting more and more intrigued by "his maid". He keeps worrying about her wound and even went out of his way to get her some ointment? HmmmAnd that little teasing when he told her "So there are things you don't know?"? HmmmThat airheaded of Xiuwan is going to create trouble with her imaginary romance with a man she only saw twice, but I think it might through her they will uncover the scheming Du siblings. Also, I thought it would have been the seemingly very shy Xiuru that would have been used by Cuiqe but she seemed to have noticed Cuiqe is trouble.P.S: is it me and my delusional self or did Jinqi tried to match Lanxiang steps when they left the garrison? ^^

When Jia Lan finished her theatrical performance—having enacted that moving story for the soldiers—everyone applauded, including the Marquis (who was also the commander) and Lin Jin Qi. The Marquis spoke to Lin Jin Qi and hinted that he wished to marry this exceptional maidservant. He asked, "Can you give her to me?" Lin Jin Qi gave him a look—one that signaled refusal, though subtly masked—and then offered a flimsy excuse to avoid handing Jia Lan over to the gallant soldier. The soldier glimpsed the real reason behind Lin Jin Qi's refusal in his eyes. He smiled inwardly, as if to say, "You can't fool me, Lin Jin Qi." The commander had told Lin Jin Qi that he had lost his wife and now had an 11-year-old daughter who needed a mother. Lin Jin Qi promptly offered a solution: her sister Xiu Wan was available. As Lin Jin Qi and Jia Lan walked away from the commander to head home, a beautiful, poetic scene unfolded. His possessive gaze upon her—however veiled—hinted at a magical connection beginning to form between them. Walking at sunset, one following the other, the camera captured the pair silhouetted against the sun; Lin Jin Qi’s large strides across the earth moved in rhythm with Jia Lan’s steps. Upon returning home, Lin Jin Qi proposed this solution regarding Xiu Wan—whom she believed would be inconsolable without her romantic match. When he informed his mother and aunt that the 32-year-old commander wished to marry the young woman, they were delighted; however, in that era, a 32-year-old man was considered old, and they immediately implied that Xiu Wan would not be pleased—even though the two older women, Lin Jin Qi’s mother and aunt, undoubtedly saw him as a worthy match. Xiu Wan, along with her sisters and Miss Du Cui Que, had overheard everything from behind the door. Devastated, Xiu Wan wanted to storm in and pick a fight, but Cui Que led her away—likely to find a solution. Xiu Wan soon declared, "I don't want to marry an old man." Xiu Lai, the observant sister, watched from the sidelines; it remains unclear whether her expression stemmed from her own love for the Marquis or from distress over her sister's unhappiness. Her thoughts often seemed enigmatic. Yu Chan fell seriously ill, developing a skin rash, and Jia Lan quickly sought help from Lin Jin Qi, who agreed to provide the family physician—who was currently attending to his sister... ...the younger one, who was also suffering from some minor itching. In this episode, it seems their health issues have been resolved—we’ll see if that holds true in the next one. However, the observant sister’s gaze—directed at Miss Du Cui, then at the lake, and finally at her own sister—was enigmatic. I can’t tell if she suspects something regarding the lake or if it’s just her usual suspicion of Du Cui (which is well-founded). So, that’s the end of this episode (and we’ll see what Episode 16 has in store).

At first, I thought that maybe it was chickenpox, especially after Xiushu also got similar symptoms, but the way Yuchu's illness progressed, it actually did look like erysipelas. As far as I know, it's not contagious, so there's no way Xiushu has the same thing... Right? 🥺And who would have thought that Xiuwan would be the one to get wrapped around Cuique's finger! And now she will "help" her meet her brother in secret and ensure they get caught, so Xiuwan wouldn't have to marry Commander Yuan. AND I kind of had a feeling that Cuique wants to take this chance to marry him instead... 🫣 I really hope that little, observant Xiuru will find a way to stop the Du siblings and their schemes. 🤞I can only sigh in relief that Jinqi is already suspecting Young Lady Du of something and has asked Lanxiang to watch her. 😮💨And, oh boy, that man has fallen... He can't keep his eyes off Lanxiang anymore and is looking for excuses to meet her or ask her to attend him. And, of course, he agreed to help her with the physician... And the beautiful irony in all this is that she was supposed to be his wife all those years ago anyway... They would have had a beautiful, wholesome marriage filled with love and happiness, but now they have to go "against the current" to get onto that same path and destiny once again. 🤗🥰

The production quality is outstanding. The writing and creative direction are very good, especially the use of single shot scenes that create such a smooth, almost uninterrupted flow. Add the beautiful cinematography and excellent acting, and visually, this series is quite impressive. It begins with a classic riches to rags story…oppression, unjust persecution, love and revenge.Lanxiang and Jin Qi were betrothed, but palace politics destroyed everything. Their engagement was cancelled, Lanxiang lost her family and title, and circumstances eventually brought her back to Jin Qi’s household…not as the woman he was supposed to marry, but as a slave and maid. The first third of this 47 episode series is surprisingly patient. The pace is slow, but instead of rushing toward romance, it spends considerable time showing the lives of household maids…the hierarchy, their duties, punishments, accountability and the constant awareness of rank. It is a part of aristocratic life that many historical dramas simply use as background, but here it becomes part of the story itself. And while Lanxiang quietly grows in the background, Jin Qi faces trials of his own…his marriage, his family and his career. For fourteen episodes, there really isn’t a love story between them. Not even a spark or one of those conveniently prolonged romantic glances that C dramas love so much. Yet circumstances keep pulling these two together. Then comes Episode 15…and perhaps for the first time, Jin Qi truly sees Lanxiang.Fifteen episodes just to get there? Against the Current certainly takes its sweet time…but somehow, I’m still swimming with it.
