Justice for daughters’ inheritance

This episode was all about pressuring XiuRu to allow a concubine for her husband to gain a son. Too bad they were unaware that the reason he had four girls was HIM.😝🙄 If XiuRui never had a son thanks to hubby that would allow the branch that did have a son take over the title. Not just that but everything else would go to clan and not Marquis descendants. 🙄😝 So a separation was put in the table to get XiuRu out of the situation. When all the needed officials collected at the Lin house, the Yuans had to accept the conditions. The Lins would pick the concubine, any son would gain the title, but all properties and money would be held exclusively for the first wife and children. The second wife would gain nothing but title for her son. I absolutely loved JinQi’s response to the Marquis about how much a title was worth compared to his wife and what if no son? He explained in great detail how the titles were earned by both of them. He spoke of all the occasions LanXiang had supported and stood by him. If he did not have a son at 40 he would return the title to emperor rather than have more than one wife. She deserved better from him and what kind of man would choose a son the never met and a title over a loving wife? He gave his friend some thoughts to chomp on. It is also in this episode that JinQi had given up his post to return to JinLing with his wife. Considering the fickleness of emperor favor, his wife gave him good counsel and the play let him reflect on history and how it tends to repeat itself. He also had a treasonous act under his belt that could come back if discovered. His little brother also lost his job once JinQi left. He was good natured about it and admitted he was not up to the job and had no regrets. He was all happy with a new venture idea til JinQi and Marquis informed him that the only way it would work was illegally trading with foreigners and the penalty was prison or beheading. He quickly excused himself after that.🤣With the mother in law’s fight for a grandson, I am not sure if she saw that as the only means to keep her son’s family assets with him. What is really sad is willing to cut off his daughters for a son that may never be. What ultimately happened is they agreed to the Lin’s terms to keep properties with his daughters ….period. This would keep the clan and third branch son from taking it all and leaving the women as pawns and bargaining chips in forced marriage alliances. Very like the Zhao situation. Here XiuRu did what she married into the family to do, take care of his daughter. His mother made him lose sight of that. Now XiuRu will get to choose the concubine. That will make things interesting. I loved watching the leads walk hand in hand after their chat with his mom. XiuRu wanted them to be her swords with the Yuan family and they came through for her. Here I was disappointed in the Marquis after XiuRu had done everything the Yuans required from her and she was still found wanting. There is a debate whether these two loved each other or not. The mom indicates maybe not. I know she loves her daughters and would do anything for them. Her husband was not as inclined until shamed and forced. I have not seen enough of them together to really speculate, but his cowardice with his mother did not put him in a good light. There were sons for the title. She did not have to interfere and split up their family. She truly saw no worth in the granddaughters and that’s a damn shame.😝

What is a title worth?

“If I betray her for the sake of a son I have never met…”Can there be truer words of love? Episode 40 beautifully touches on the old rules of inheritance, where having a son meant continuing the family name, property and title. But Jin Qi asks a much simpler question…what is the title of Marquis worth if getting it means betraying the woman he loves? This series has always been about the strength of women in a world ruled by men. And perhaps Jin Qi’s greatest strength is realizing that some traditions are simply not worth protecting.A title can be inherited…but love has to be earned.

The ways of the Lin family have changed

It's such a delight to see how Lanxiang has changed the ways of the Lin family. And her biggest supporter ofc is Jinqi! He loves her so much... 😊 I really loved what he answered Marquis Yuan when asked about not having a son at forty. If only every husband were like that... 🥹I never noticed the relationship Xiuru has with her husband's first daughter. They surprised me in a very good and wholesome way. 🤗 But, honestly, I was a bit disappointed with Marquis Yuan for agreeing to take a concubine, and ofc relieved afterward that it's solved and everyone's satisfied with the result. 😌😮‍💨I still feel the ripples of that huge time skip we got in the previous episode and I fear it may last until the end. Hopefully not, though... 🤞
