A Masterclass in How Not to Write… Anything. Plot Holes So Big Even the Emperor Could Fall Through
If endurance were an Olympic sport, finishing The Princess Gambit would qualify me for a bronze medal… and a lifetime of trauma counseling. This drama is a spectacular misfire: a perfect storm of convoluted plotting, psychologically incoherent characters, and technical missteps that demands the complete annihilation of a viewer’s disbelief.Let’s start with the plot, which seems to have been assembled by a committee of sleep-deprived squirrels.
We are told a decade passes between the FL’s forced marriage and her reunion with her brother. Ten years! Yet, everyone (save the brother, who alone looks suitably traumatized given how much he appears to have aged) behaves as if maybe 18 months have passed.
Time isn't just a flat circle here; it's a lie. This is merely the first in a series of glaring loopholes that define the narrative.
Then we have the backstory of the Beiyuan queen, which deserves its own wuxia comic entitled The Impossible Woman.
She’s a legendary escape artist / torture survivor / revenge mastermind / palace seductress / long-term assassin.
She escapes Country Qi, is tortured into disability + infertility by a mysterious VIP (later revealed as the Emperor), charms her way into his bed, and slowly poisons him for decades.
Somewhere in this saga, she’s also the lifelong love of Country Qi’s 3rd prince - a bond formed when he was a boy and she his servant.
Given the massive age gap, this woman is either aging backwards or running on pure plot armor and Botox. Honestly, respect though, she’s more resilient than 90% of Marvel superheroes.
Speaking of the 3rd prince… good lord.
A teenage crush so powerful it transforms him into a full-time murderer and part-time psychopath.
He slaughters family and strangers alike for a woman he’s seen maybe a handful of times.
Romeo and Juliet walked so this unhinged man could sprint off a cliff.
His devotion isn’t convincing; it’s a narrative mandate that turns him into an idiotic psychopath in service of a cold-blooded and nonsensical revenge plot.
The drama then leans heavily on yawn-inducing, amateur tropes.
Behold the FL Misunderstanding Cycle™: tortured, betrayed, and emotionally brutalized by the ML until… Oops! He thinks she’s dead and transforms overnight into the “most devoted husband ever, ever so ready to lay down his life.” The emotional whiplash is faster than my fast-forward button.
And let’s return to our Evil Queen, who clearly earned a PhD in Strategic Stupidity. To kill the FL and friends, she attempts to burn down her own city, ignoring civilians, political fallout, and the fact her psycho boyfriend is inside. The writers aimed for cold-blooded but landed on idiotic psychopath (so in this sense, these two silly psychos are a match made in heaven).
It’s not cunning; it’s chaotic nonsense that pushes a plot already on life support completely off a cliff.
The lovelines are equally amateur and unconvincing, generating all the chemistry of two damp towels leaning against each other.
But the true coup de grâce? The production.
The makeup is horrible: cakey, ghostly, and unflattering, making the entire cast look ill. The female lead looked wide-eyed 90% of the time (which is kinda creepy cos she doesn’t seem to blink much) while the male lead looks brooding (it’s like he has something on his mind. Permanently. Maybe he’s wondering about his drama choices 🤷♀️)
Paired with acting that oscillates between wooden and melodramatic, it creates the aesthetic of a lavishly funded high-school play. It constantly breaks immersion, reminding you you’re watching a struggle against underwhelming material.
By Episode 15, my fast-forward button glowed red-hot. I watched at max speed, skipped chunks, and still rolled my eyes enough to strain them.
But because I’m cursed with the need to finish what I start, I forced myself through every last absurd episode. My poor eyes. My wasted hours.
Final Verdict:
★☆☆☆☆
One star - A case study in how not to construct a drama. Recommended only for masochists, or those seeking validation that their critical eye is still sharp.
Conclusion: If you enjoy plot holes large enough to swallow a royal palace, characters allergic to logic, and makeup that could double as Halloween special effects, then The Princess Gambit is for you.
Otherwise… run. Fast. And don’t look back.

A Strong Start, A Weak Finish
This drama starts strong with beautiful costumes, exciting political games, and a smart, fiery lead couple. Jiang Taohua and Shen Zaiye shine early on—she’s clever and brave, fighting to survive, while he’s driven by revenge. Their witty rivalry and sparks of romance keep the first half gripping and fun.Sadly, the story loses its spark later. The main characters act out of sync: Taohua becomes less resourceful, and Zaiye forgets his goals, focusing only on romance. The plot drags due to overused misunderstandings and messy writing, making the ending feel rushed and unsatisfying.
Actors do their best, and the show’s first half is entertaining. But weak storytelling and too many clichés hold it back. If you enjoy smart and stylish dramas with a twist of enemies-to-lovers, you might like the beginning. Just keep in mind that the story might not hold up throughout.

Nine for OTP ship
Sometimes the episode kick off with this addictive promising excitement. It feels like that for the first 18 episode. And the it lost everything. The intensity sort of vaporized. The wit dialogue just went south hill. It gets more awkward and insensible. Since I’ve managed 25 episode. I must say, 19 to 25 is just sour candy. So okay, male lead is gorgeous as always with his handsome aura. I mean his cheekbone alone plays a character 😊. I find him best at the first 10 episode when he has plenty lines. The best moment probably the scene they got secludedly hidden in the mountains. Everything was perfect 10. And then the scene where SZ lets go all his three wives with a very smart situation indeed. Nonchalantly keeping his fourth wive by his side.
The female lead is kind of fun and cool in the beginning also. And now she’s just like everyone punching bag. So many mind-heart contra yet nothing is affectionately spoken. To think you’ve bedded someone and just blip. I found her expressionless or was it really necessary to create her character that way. From all her gambits in gambling house and now just another high and dry scenes one after another.
The dragging of the story after episode 18 is just boring. Nothing is revealing or exposing enough. Perhaps this was setting like those drama in early 2000 where it takes 10 episodes to explain one event 🙁.
The villains is not as meany as the first 10 episode. Crown Prince was so much fun to fun being the evil devil himself. Very creep with lots of unpredicted moved.
In conclusion, nope this is not fast paced. It seemed that way but it is not. Almost like running in circle pointless now. They bring put new character like a commercial break, just split moments with weak storyline.
Hopefully next episode 26, to the last one improved.
The wardrobe is okay. They have the better masked era setting. The cinematography, again the first 10 episode got it good. The music is lovely really.
Really looking forward for the story to patch up thrilling again. Let’s hope.

Goodlooking actors can’t save a botched script
Well, this started of great and somewhere between episode 15-36 it lost its marbles like literally. there was no coherent plot. A lot of things didn’t make sense. The amnesia plot was just the icing on a shitty cake I mean plot. The villains all seems quite cartoonish and under developed.
The acting was so so, I never felt like the FL and ML really loved each other. The side characters were okay. If you like political drama with romance this is not it. Thier first love scene was quite aggressive and came from nowhere! like there was no build up that led us there.
I really struggled to finish this! The Wu brothers were so handsome and so was the chancellor but other than that there was not much else in this.
Watch at your own peril or at x1.5 to cut down on the wasted time.

Kind of slow and strange ending
Very good in the beginning, but after eps 10 the story is becoming slow and keep round and round, the acting were superb, but the story line were not so strong, but worth of watching, ,,................,...................{ For review better 100-200 minimum character is enough....we dont want to spill too much anyway)Was this review helpful to you?

Quite A Disappointment, Despite the Brilliant Cast!
A good start, unfortunately a very bad ending! This show is a fine example of the fact that even good actors can’t save an abysmal script; it is like a sinking ship which is ill-advised. The show is surely a gambit and stays true to its title. The storyline isn’t any exclusive or unique. We have an exhausted Princess who is traded to the neighboring country as a peace offer. The only twist, she has been poisoned by her conniving stepmother who has snatched the throne from husband. She exiles her with a threat- act as a spy or else you will die & your younger brother will be killed. The poor princess arrives in the foreign country and is promptly entangled with the ruthless Left Chancellor. The rest of the drama is both of them playing mind games until they conclude that they have a common enemy and it’s better to work together. The script is oddly paced and at times most scenes lose connection with the prior ones, so there is no clear context as to what transpired in the background.

Disappointed
I was very happy to have found a good C drama with a wonderful/talented cast, exciting storyline and beautiful music and scenery. Until.....halfway through the series, it all went downhill. Way too many plots and schemes and bad guys after bad guys, bad plots, after bad plots, it became way, way too much and too confusing. Even the FL lead became unlikeable and cold/ aligning with the enemy for no reason. I honestly didn't think that the ML and FL had any chemistry to begin with and the writers have chosen to write off the little chemistry there might have been to make the FL cold and unlikable. Ending was rushed and ignored all the rest of the characters' futures or follow up stories in lieu of an ambiguous end for the lead characters. I would not watch this again, way too depressing and complicated for no reason....unless......they would make a follow up part 2 with all the couples development, coronation of new emperor, ML /FL character growth and an overall happier storyline. Was this review helpful to you?
Lovely Story
The actors and actress plays their characters are so good, especially Liu XueYi, the story line is good and happy ending. Everything is reasonable except Jiang Chang Jue in 2-3 years, he already becomes a big man, maybe in the story the teenager Jiang ChangJue is about 17-18 years old, the little actor for Jiang Chang Jue eventhough his real age is 13years old but looks like 8 or 10 years old, so it's like Jiang Tao Hua left her state already for 7-8 years. Was this review helpful to you?

Starting off phenomenally but fizzling out...
The chemistry (between the FL & ML) started strong and fiery but went off-course once the female lead’s amnesia arc kicked in. The pacing dragged so much that the main romance lost its spark. The drama began phenomenally and had great potential. I wish the writers had chosen something more original than the cliché memory-loss trope. Thankfully, the side plots, especially those involving the Third Prince and the ML with Fourth Prince, kept me going till the end.Visually, MZY and LXY looked great together, and I had high hopes for their chemistry. Unfortunately, weak writing and dissonance in acting styles caused the connection to collapse. Here, the female lead’s character development fell short, especially compared to the novel. I struggled to connect with her portrayal. MZY’s wide-eyed expressions, while fitting early on when the character was fragile and fighting to survive, became repetitive. She often appeared expressless, which undercut the image of a witty princess plotting her way forward.
The cinematography made things worse by relying heavily on close-ups of the leads to convey emotion. While LXY’s close-ups were somewhat distracting because of his high nose bridge, his expressive eyes still drew me in. But with MZY, the same framing made her eyes look blank and oversized, muting her emotional presence. Consequently, their chemistry fizzling out, and I even found myself rooting for the ML’s wife instead.
Still, those first 10 episodes were undeniably sizzling. I just wish the momentum had held. For viewers wanting light entertainment, the show might still deliver. Here’s hoping both leads land on better scripts that let their chemistry and talent truly shine.

Gamble to Survive
Edit: please be aware this review is only for the first 21 episodes LOL everything lowkey went downhill from here as expected.Wow where to start? I'd just started my little binge of cdramas again and after finishing a very mediocre modern cdrama with 0 chemistry (COUGH passionatelyinlove) this is EXACTLY what I needed. 2 seasoned actors who clearly know what they're doing and the angst + tension + chemistry is all there! I've been seeing a lot of reviews saying they don't see the chemistry between Meng ziyi and liu xueyi and I guess chemistry is subjective, but personally I think they're a great pair. Love seeing Meng ziyi in her natural state (clever, strong, independent) and after watching blossom, while she isn't as clever and self sufficient as she was in there, her character here does a good job of surviving in a whole new nation on her intelligence alone while being poisoned and with the fate of her little brother's life in her hands. This is my first time watching liu xueyi and I really like him! He does moody brooding ruthless ml really well. Now more into the plot:
I've also seen some people mention how this is a harem and they didn't expect him to have concubines and a whole wife before marrying the fl into his house as a concubine. You guys this was really not that serious, he literally paid the other women 0 attention and only interacted with the fl the entire show basically LOL. I think in the novel it was a bigger deal, as in he likely frequently slept with the women and had to actually give attention to them - but usually dramas will water this down for us haha (thank god). Also they're literally all there because their families wanted to spy on him since he has so much power in court. And if this somehow still bothers you (SPOILER! he ends up divorcing all of them except our fl - wow if only all historical men were like him huh?)
It's not exactly a unique storyline but they do have a few factors they stand out, such as the fl coming from a different nation and forming a political marriage alliance with ml. I guess also the fact that even though she's a 'princess' in title, she actually isn't treated like one at all by her royal family. The poison was an interesting touch that drives the plot forward, fl being unable to fully betray either side with her every action but forcing herself to eventually reveal her true intentions. Now the more common plot point is the ml having a lifelong grudge against someone else in power and working his way towards his revenge. One thing I do like about this is that the emperor isn't seen as a good guy who wants to get rid of all the corrupt officials in court, and he doesn't treat the ml as his right hand man entrusting him with everything. He's someone who has to keep both corrupt and good in balance within his court, otherwise he could very easily end up overthrown (similar to the princess royal, where the emperor has one side of a noble family backing him up, and without them there's bound to be major problems). That said, I don't love the guy, but I appreciate the complexity in character.
One thing I absolutely love is the setup for the ml and fl's romance. Ml has never trusted anyone in his life, and very much dedicated to getting rid of anything/anyone that gets in his way. Fl has even bigger problems, she's a good person to her core, yet forced to do bad things for the people holding her brother hostage. Mix that in with her having to lie to ml every step of the way, gaining and losing his trust back and forth, it creates a loooot of angst. I don't think it creates high blood pressure for me, but it's definitely the right amount for what I can handle right now. People seem pretty frustrated with the amount of miscommunication but it's not really miscommunication is it? Fl has a reason she can't say all these things to the ml (hello? spies and little bro gonna die). And it's really not up to her to prove to him that she's a good person when she has time and time again shown her good character. I feel like I could name a million dramas with actual miscommunication and I don't think this is one of them. How else are we going to have things revealed one by one without the curated misunderstandings?
Anyways I'm currently at episode 21, can't believe they have the freaking amnesia trope but whatever. I just hope this is resolved super soon. Also really can't wait to see actual romance between ml and fl because whatever we're getting before is pure hate love relationship. I need to see the ml actually madly in love with her RN. I absolutely LOVE when the dude is in the wrong because I feel like we see a lot of dramas where the fl does something wrong and causes a bunch of trouble for the ml. I can't say I'm gonna love their dynamic once they get together but I hope it's not too lovey dovey otherwise it was a waste of all that angst and tension.

bland, like dry toast
LXY has been locked into playing a formulaic character for a few years now.first he (character) tries to kill the fl
then he falls madly in love with her
then he spends the rest of the drama simping hard for/mourning/pursuing/obsessing over her.
and that character archetype always triumphs over the rest of the plot each time, just like his shen zai ye did here. like his background, motivations, all the politics, everything must make way for the formula to play out. boring, shallow, predictable and uninspiring.
MXY pouted and fluttered her eyelashes like taohua's life depended on it, although the role did not call for it. but her character was so fundamentally abysmally written that I didn't care about the actress' mediocre performance. also, for someone that was such a victim, not once did taohua inspire any sympathy. she just cosplayed a bad bitch the entire time while running around like an headless chicken lmao.
I did not see any chemistry between them, they had two kisses before I dropped and they were both as dull as ditch water. I do not recommend. dramas that go out of their way to write unbelievably nonsensical fls and scenarios do not deserve anyone's attention or time.

Yet another disappointed idol costume drama with terrible plot and bad acting.
The Princess Gambit is yet another flop in the historical costume drama genre. I like Lin Xue Yi, and I am not a fan of Meng Zi Yi. I watched Blossom and ended up dropping it after 17 episodes.I stuck around until the end of this drama because I like Lin Xue Yi’s acting talents; however, in this drama, the plot was so convoluted and confusing that it was a waste of his abilities.
Their on-screen chemistry was terrible, and I watched it at 2x speed to get past the boring and repetitive episodes. It would have been better if it had ended in 24 episodes.
Synopsis: Princess Jiang Tao Hua of Zhao seeks freedom from Empress Lu’s control by proposing a political marriage to the state of Wei. But upon arriving, she’s attacked and falsely accused of an affair with Chancellor Shen Zai Ye. To survive, she offers herself as his concubine, secretly tasked with toppling the Crown Prince while also searching for the antidote to a poison in her body. Shen Zai Ye, a principled yet ruthless official, becomes unwillingly entangled with Tao Hua amid court conspiracies and power struggles. Though he initially plots to get rid of her, Tao Hua’s courage and cunning earn his reluctant respect. Forced into Shen’s household, she faces constant danger from his other wives and political spies. Still, she uses her palace-honed instincts to hold her ground. As their fates intertwine, the pair form an uneasy alliance against their common enemies. Together, they expose the Crown Prince’s crimes, triggering a power shift within the palace. But with new threats emerging, both must decide if love and peace are within reach — or if the dangerous game of power’ll consume them.
