Not as....good
If i was new to Chinese drama, this would have been really great. Chemistry was beautiful between them. Plot was solid. Acting was solid on his part. She failed on her part or the Director failed in choosing an actress capable in pulling off the name LEGEND OF THE FEMALE GENERAL. This drama was a don't think just...enjoy the ride and i enjoyed the ride. Was this review helpful to you?
A Different Interpretation from the Novel
I came into Legend of the Female General with high expectations because I’ve read the novel "Rebirth of a Star General" by Qian Shan Cha Ke, and while I appreciate the effort put into the drama, I personally found myself a bit disappointed with how different the adaptation turned out.I understand that when a novel is adapted into a drama, certain changes are unavoidable due to time limits and creative direction. However, for readers of the original story, the drama felt quite far from the novel’s core.
Many important parts that made the novel impactful were either minimized or removed, most particularly about He Yan's journey on becoming a legendary general, her enlistment as a soldier, and her pursuit of justice for her comrades. These elements were central to her character development in the novel, and without them, her strength in the drama felt more assumed than earned.
The story also leaned more heavily into romance compared to the source material. While the love story was not bad, it overshadowed the themes of honor, sacrifice, and resilience that made the original story so memorable.
Some symbolic details, like the sword, were also handled differently, which may feel confusing for those familiar with the novel.
Overall, this drama may still be enjoyable for viewers who haven’t read Rebirth of a Star General. However, for novel readers, it feels more like an alternate interpretation rather than a faithful adaptation. I only wish the drama had preserved more of what made the original story special.

A Poetic Script and Top Tier Acting
First, I need to mention that the script was beautiful. He Yan’s moon line when they danced, Xiao Jue’s confession to He Yan when he found out how she feels about him, and Xiao Jue telling the royals and officials how he feels about He Yan.. beautiful and so well-written. I myself was swooned and repeated those scenes multiple times.Unfortunately, if not for the poor execution, this drama could’ve been perfect. As a start, I don’t know why they named it Legend of the Female General. Throughout the story, the ‘female general’ was not spoken of, as everyone knew the General Feihong as He Rufei, a man. I guess, this title could’ve worked after it is known that General Feihong was He Yan, a woman, which does not get revealed to the world until later in the series.
Second, I wonder how He Yan managed to hide her identity as a woman back when she was General Feihong but have it be discovered easily and quickly when she entered Yezhou Garrison. Also, I love Zhou Ye for the role but her built was so feminine. The shoulders, waist, everything was definitely not a man’s. Not to mention, I question how there were times Xiao Jue saw He Yan in a mask yet did not seem to have any suspicion that she is He Rufei, or at least looked like him. I wish the producers and director could’ve executed this better.
Despite the poor execution, the actors did really well at portraying their roles, especially Cheng Lei. Cheng Lei stole the spotlight. His built is definitely made for general roles so in this sense, he was perfect to act as Xiao Jue. Moreover, his facial expressions are a masterpiece. His ability to act out emotions just through his gaze was amazing. We could clearly see whether he’s suspicious, concerned, jealous, in love, just through his eyes. We could also see the change in his feelings towards He Yan through his eyes. Also, his lowkey corner of the mouth smile towards He Yan.. lovely. I immediately fell in love and became his hardcore fan after watching him in this drama.
Zhou Ye also did a really great job at her role. Although the execution, could’ve been improved either through the story, makeup, etc, it’s a fact that Zhou Ye was great in acting out He Yan as an independent, tough, ambitious, patriotic, female general. Her chemistry and visuals were perfectly paired with Cheng Lei. I have to admit that I ship them so much proven by how I’ve rewatched this drama multiple times just to see their scenes and hear the lines in this drama. I hope they get to work on another project as main leads with a happy ending.
In terms of story, it was definitely entertaining to me. It mainly focuses on love, justice, and revenge, packed in a light tone so it was an ‘easy watch’. However, throughout the drama, we can obviously see scenes being cut that affected the flow of the story and taken away that extra ‘spice’. Furthermore, I was so annoyed by the last few episodes. They could've just given us more happy scenes instead of forcing that one crazy conflict, but on second thought, I guess it’s necessary to show the kind of love He Yan and Xiao Jue have for each other, as well as their responsibilities as Generals.
Despite the things that I think could be improved, this drama is definitely one of my favorites thanks to Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye, as well as the script.

Best historical drama of the year
This show is amazing .With most shows i have to fast forward useless plots and storylines but i never have to fast forward this show. Theres action on every episode and romance too. They had the typical misunderstanding that always happens in cdramas but they didnt draw it out like on most shows and waste several episodes. So i was happy for that! Love how strong female character is! Many dramas have them start off strong and capable then somehow always get captured and hurt later on but shes stayed consistently strong! This writer is on point! Was this review helpful to you?
I can't fault this drama - was hooked from the get go!
I have only watched a handful of Chinese dramas and have also dropped a couple but this drama wow. The two leads had amazing chemistry giving me goosebumps with every encounter. The fight scenes were so well done full of excitement and everything was beautifully captured with an OST complimented the scenes so well. Was this review helpful to you?

First watch Drama, than Read novel
1st advice: See the drama first and then read novel. The Casting is perfect. Actor who play ML.... the way his eye talk, his expression.... is chef kiss. I love Zhou Li acting who played He Yan role. She perfect fit with every types characters whether it's serious role or bubbly, funny, cute girl type of role. All the action scene were perfect well co-ordinated specially between ML & FL.
Also, the supporting cast were also very good.
When the teaser first drop, I was so excited because at that time I haven't read the novel yet as I was waiting for the translation to get complete. As soon as I saw the teaser, I bling read the whole novel.
Now come my little disappointment with new regulation of Chinese drama.
As per new regulation, C-drama will only have episodes upto 40 and if the it's necessary to have more than 40 episodes than second season can do but that too after 6months of last airing of S1 of the same drama. Due to which this drama was cut short.
Now my rant which could contain spoilers
I am okay with no rebirth plot but unnecessary of misunderstanding that Xiao Jun have after downing He Yan truth. It wasn't in the novel. Also, the wedding plot, from what I remembered it wasn't in the novel too. Further, SL obsession with Henan wasn't in the novel too, why you need to add it. IT WAS UNNECESSARY. The battle in last episode actually happened after their marriage and He Yan was with General Yan and his battalion. Never come to recuse help Xiao Jun.
Further, when I read the novel I was excited to see how the film those battle scenes from Jiyang where He Yan actually battle in water and Garrison attack by WuTao people where she killed 3 wutao people. But when I saw the actual scenes it wasn't same as descriptive in the novel. I am kind of disappointed with these 2 battle scenes.
Writer gege/ Writer Jiějiě you change many thing but can't you changed General Yan fate, too. As a person who love the novel, my heart pain for him and his furen.
There are things which are changed from the novel and for me....... some are good, and some aren't.

I love the moon, yet the moon doesn't know.
I cannot begin to say how much I was looking forward to this release of the drama. As soon as I heard about it, I added it to my list (in January). The story itself (the novel) was very well written and very captivating. They have also done a very good job with the drama adaptation, though I felt some parts were lacking, like the war in Rundu City, the reveal of the identity and the ending. The actors have done a great job, especially Ryan Cheng, loved him and his acting, as well as Zhang Kang Le. The production, VFX make you feel very engrossed in the time period and the story. I would 100% rewatch my favourite scenes.
The chemistry between the actors was also pretty good to watch and added a smooth flow to the drama.
All in all, a gripping watch for period drama lovers.

Independent woman and Great team spirit
I just finished this drama and this is the most imperfectly perfect drama for me.I love He Yan so much and I'm so grateful that Zhou Ye got the opportunity to play her..I don't think anyone would have done justice to the characters like she did. She lived He Yan's character so much
Xiao Jue, some said he wasn't smart as the book but EP 31-32 was amazing. I would definitely love to see Cheng Lei in a calculative political drama. Just him using his brain and martial arts skills to outshine the court and it's corrupt official.
I love women in male dominated fields. As someone that has watched cdramas with many plot being the damsel in distress being saved by the man, I'm so happy that LOTFG gave me a strong independent woman that didn't need a man to save her or blaze a path for her. She wanted to walk on her own path and she did that.
The martial arts scenes were peak perfection. General Feihong is forever engraved in my heart. I love the way He Yan always encouraged women to stand up for themselves and not entrust their lives into men's hands. I love the way she defended herself always and was confident in herself. I waited for this drama for 2 years and they've ended. I will miss them and will always rewatch them. I also hope we get a reunion project with them.
I love everything about this drama and it's the best. I hope everyone gets to experience it themselves without drawing conclusions from commentaries. I experienced it myself and I'm so happy I did.
I'm also so in love with the team spirit of General Feihong and General Feighyun.
General Feihong white General costume, I love so much and it looked so majestic on Zhou Ye.

A General’s Honor, A Woman’s Destiny
Story & ThemesAdapted from Rebirth of a Star General by Qian Shan Cha Ke, the drama blends rebirth, gender disguise, military strategy, and romance into a gripping narrative. He Yan’s transformation—from a betrayed noblewoman to a reborn warrior who climbs her way back to glory—is both inspiring and emotionally compelling. The drama excels at showing her intelligence and resilience: excelling at the military academy, disguising her gender to survive, and commanding troops with sharp strategy. Unlike many costume dramas that focus heavily on palace politics, this series gives us large-scale battle sequences and war strategy, which is refreshing. [I really wished the drama had included more battle scenes, especially the final war against the Wutuo. I was hoping the last episode would showcase the full strategies, tactics, and fighting skills in detail, but instead, that entire war was wrapped up in just about 10 minutes in episode 36.] 😪
Romance
One of the drama’s greatest strengths is the slow-burn romance between He Yan (Zhou Ye) and Xiao Jue (Cheng Lei). Unlike typical historical dramas where love at first sight dominates, their relationship evolves gradually, rooted in mutual respect, trust, and shared struggles. Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei’s performances complement each other perfectly—her warmth softens his stoic demeanor, while his calm steadiness supports her fiery courage. [ I didn’t mind the emperor being concerned about two great generals marrying, or his push for He Yan to marry Chu Zhao instead. The issue was that this plotline dragged on for too long. After a while, Chu Zhao’s one-sided obsession felt unnecessary to the story. It would have been better if his arc had wrapped up by episode 34, allowing the last war against the Wutuo to begin in episode 35. Then, the leads’ wedding could have been placed at the start of episode 36, ending the drama on a sweeter note by showing their daughter at the finale. ]
Performances
Zhou Ye (He Yan): Outstanding as a strong yet layered heroine. She balances toughness with vulnerability, making He Yan feel believable both as a general and as a woman navigating love and betrayal.
Cheng Lei (Xiao Jue): Charismatic and cool-headed, his chemistry with Zhou Ye is one of the show’s biggest highlights. Their relationship evolves naturally from suspicion to trust and finally love.
Supporting actors like Zhang Miaoyi and Zhang Kangle add depth, though some secondary arcs feel underexplored.
Production Quality
Visually, the show is top-tier:
Battle scenes are well-choreographed with sweeping cinematography.
Costumes and set designs highlight the grandeur of the late Eastern Jin-style backdrop.
The soundtrack mixes traditional Chinese instruments with modern scoring, enhancing both emotional and action-heavy moments.
Strengths vs Weaknesses
✅ A rare strong female lead in the general’s role
✅ Engaging mix of strategy, war, and romance
✅ High-quality production and set pieces
✅ Refreshing slow-burn, not rushed or forced
✅ Emotional depth rooted in trust and admiration
❌ Pacing slows in the middle episodes
❌ Some side plots (like rival generals and political intrigue) could have been fleshed out more
❌ Secondary love arcs (like Chu Zhao’s feelings) feel underdeveloped
Legend of the Female General is one of the most engaging historical C-dramas of 2025. With its powerful heroine, compelling romance, and impressive war strategy elements, it stands apart from typical palace intrigue series. Fans of The Long Ballad will especially enjoy it. It is not the usual palace-drama love affair—it’s a love forged in war, tested by betrayal, and strengthened by mutual respect. For fans who enjoy a patient, meaningful build-up rather than quick melodrama, this romance is a standout element of the series. A must-watch if you love strong heroines, epic battles, and heart-stirring romance.

String chemistry and bond
I started this drama last week cause my mom was watching it then was obssessed, I binge watched over 20eps in less than 2 days, I liked the strong personality of the fl (that was what I was for anyway) the chemistry between the leads is soooooo good, the way they looked at each other. How the fl worked so hard to achieve what she wanted and reclaim what she was owed, this story oversaw most feelings at first, the second couple was adorable but were neglected later, the mix between truths and lies, loyalty and betrayal, love and hate. I loved the feminism portrayed there, I struggled between hating and liking the second lead (hate was more but still)
Around the end (ep 33-36) things started to get messy, they should've stopped at 34 max, but they prolonged it that I felt like I was watching ep15-16 of a kdrama that needed only 12eps. There were some direction flaws that brought down the core of the story, but turning off logic worked well around the end, thinking about it as an imaginary story.
In general, it was worth watching, just not enough to stop me from starting something else.
Couldn't make it in my top 3 but definitely in my top 10 historical dramas so far.

Final Review: Strong characters, strong chemistry and acting, but held back by a clunky plot.
A young woman is forced to take the place of her sick brother lest their family lose their position of power because of their lacking male heir. She therefore turns herself into the perfect son and even becomes a legendary general in the military. However, tragedy strikes as her brother regains his health, her family betrays her, and she is left for dead.
After she recovers she vows to take revenge and show the world who the real general He Ru Fei actually is, so she joins the army again and finds herself in the camp lead by her past schoolmate and fellow General FengYun. FengYun, however, is disgraced and his father dead because of accusations by the current He Ru Fei. The actual He Ru Fei calls herself HeYan and hides who she truly is while gaining his trust and rising back up the ranks.
When they fall in love and FengYun eventually finds out who she actually is, will their love survive? And what about the revenge both of them are looking for?
Pros:
- Great chemistry between the main couple. You actually believe that there's something there, even when FengYun still thinks she's a man. And when both of them admit to their feelings, they are believable and charming.
- Great characters. Not a single character bothered me. Well acted, great in their role, and enjoyable. Personal favourites are one of my favourite actors, Bai Shu, as the horrible fake He Ru Fei and Zhang KhanLe as Chu Zhao.
- Talking about Chu Zhao, he is one of the best and worst things about this drama. I'm still not entirely know if I love or hate what they did with him, because we know he is up to no good from minute one and yet halfway through the show we start thinking that maybe we were mistaken and he's actually not that bad. (Only for him to become despicable again towards the end.) It's a wild ride and I'm still wondering what the hell happened there. The actor sure knew what he was doing, though.
- While the plot has its issues - I'll get to that - it IS still a very enjoyable watch and nowhere did I find myself bored. The push and pull between two people who are hiding secrets AND their burgeoning feelings for each other is a lot of fun. Especially when the rest of the world doesn't yet know that she's a woman and just see FengYun being wildly protective of his male subordinate. If you liked Mulan, you'll enjoy this.
Cons:
- Woof, the plot. I still enjoyed the story, but there are definitely issues. The female lead's plot armor was ridiculous, because what do you mean she survived being stabbed by someone who meant to kill her, managed to make her way up a mountain WHILE BLIND, and when she's thrown off the mountain into a river not only survives that but just happens to be found by her Shifu?? Show, please.
Also, Bai Shu (HeYan's brother) is 1.79 m tall and ZhouYe (HeYan) 1.65m. You're telling me no one noticed the difference??
- The male lead finds out she's a woman because she presses against his back when they're on a horse together and that's enough for him to go 'oh, a woman!' What?? You're telling me that 1. this woman who has had to pretend to be a man - at the risk of DEATH for deceiving the emperor - her entire life forgot to put her binder on?? 2. He can feel that the boobs on this really skinny woman are somehow different from the pecs on a dude? Through several layers of clothing??
- Deus Ex Machina Emperor who is somehow incredibly cruel, incredibly dumb, but also incredibly lenient?
The guy has the male lead flogged for leaving his post. Something which SAVED thousands of people and possibly the country, because without him the enemy would have overtaken an important stronghold and slaughtered everyone there. Meanwhile he gives the female lead, who ALSO left her post, a merit and title.
But then when HeYan's big secret is revealed, something we've been working towards all show, and everyone finds out she's secretly a woman, he just goes 'oh yeah, I already knew'. All of a sudden FengYun - the guy he has had tortured for SAVING THE COUNTRY - can admit to the emperor that they've deceived him and ask for leniency and the emperor is suddenly totally cool and forgiving.
Only to be a total asshole again when they want to get married and Chu Zhao brings up the fact that their army would be huge if they were allowed to stay together. Which the emperor apparently hadn't thought of before and he needed reminding.
Something which ends up not being a problem in the end, because Chu Zhao is too obviously evil and he gets banished, which apparently means that the emperor is no longer worried about their military power and so he lets them get married??
Dude is all over the place on this.
In the end, should you watch this: If you like chemistry, cute characters, and don't mind a trashy romp that's made enjoyable by the sheer likeability and acting of the actors involved, then yes. Just know that you'll have to fastforward some of the plotholes in your head.

A Storm of Laughter, Valor, and Heart
Sometimes a show just dives headfirst into chaos, yet remains oddly compelling. The Legend of the Female General is one such instance - a flurry of battles, switched personas, alongside wildly dramatic love affairs held firm by wit, good vibes, plus genuine connection. He Yan faces a crisis. Her brother’s actions put the family reputation at risk, so she adopts a male persona to safeguard their standing. Though this begins as a somber situation, the tale quickly becomes an energetic quest. He Yan moved through battle - a strange mix of bravery alongside a playful spirit. It was like witnessing disorder transform into an unusual kind of loveliness. Each maneuver suggested failure, however, success followed.
It barrels forward, this story, maybe a bit fast, yet brimming with life. Deception in war, scheming at court, people pretending to be others – around each bend lies either silliness or genuine emotion. He Yan juggles two worlds, resulting in comical mishaps alongside witty exchanges. When she runs into Xiao Jue, a past acquaintance, their connection ignites an engaging push-pull - a rivalry blossoming into something more. Their interactions are filled with arguments, playful jabs, misunderstandings; yet it’s thoroughly captivating.
The show charmed me with its mix of silly yet genuine feeling. It’s a tale concerning finding yourself, figuring out who knows the real you - a woman determined to be understood. Moments where He Yan faces consequences from past deceptions, or privately doubts herself, resonate surprisingly deeply.
Ye imbues the role with vibrant feeling. Her He Yan isn’t some untouchable hero; instead, she’s spirited, quick-witted, courageous yet vulnerable – experiencing setbacks alongside triumphs. It’s captivating to see her lead troops then struggle to speak, a delightful contrast. Xiao Jue, portrayed by Cheng Lei, balances her perfectly - cool, thoughtful, yet intensely frustrating. Their connection isn’t solely about attraction; rather, it stems from their shared intelligence alongside a stubborn determination in both.
A lively bunch of characters - scheming lords, funny friends - brighten up the wild ride, ensuring every moment pops. Though things don’t always make sense, like a vanishing agent, actors deliver with such energy that you remain captivated.
The show looks fantastic – battles are filmed with a keen eye, outfits burst from the screen with vibrant hues, while locations manage to be grand yet believable. Moreover, the fighting isn’t merely spectacle; it builds suspense alongside a compelling beat, notably when He Yan strives to restore her reputation. I would rate this show an 8.5/10.
