First of all, If you truly want to enjoy this drama, just go in blind and don't let the negative feedback keep you from watching it. As an avid cdrama watcher, I for one enjoyed this drama so much. But also keep in mind that this is coming from someone who hasn't read the novel. But I do believe this drama deserves to be enjoyed on its own.

With that being said, this drama brought me back from my cdrama slump. Despite the controversies surrounding this drama, I fully enjoyed it nonetheless. I waited for 1.5 years for this drama to air so I don't care what other people say. I am very satisfied with it. Especially since it's a HAPPY ENDING!!! HALLELUJAH!

The chemistry between the main leads (aka our moon couple) hard carried the show.

Zhou Ye, who played the female lead He Yan, portrays the female general so well. Strong and tenacious like a soldier, but at the same time kind and soft, embodying her feminity. Sure there are inconsistencies with the script when there are times that she had to be saved by the ml, but let's not forget the many many scenes where she won many battles and achieved great feats on her own. I love love the fact that despite being raised as a man and having to perform as a man her whole life, she embraces her feminity also. She stood for the women in the series and became their voice, because she understood the fact that sadly the women in their time do not have the choice. He Yan's experience in the story is truly a tragic one. Dare I say she's more pitiful than the ml. Ordinary people would have become a villain, but she took her experience with grace and came back strong righteously. Truly worthy of the title the first female general!

Then we have our ml general xiao, who was played by Ryan Cheng. This is the first drama that I've watched that he starred in, and this definitely puts him on my radar as one of the best male leads in cdramas. His personality is truly a breath of fresh air for a general. You would expect that he would be cold and rude, but he turned out to be one of the best ml I've ever watched. Him being portrayed as the moon perfectly describes him. Not blinding like the sun, but glowing softly. Constant yet changing. Like the moon in the sky, he is steady and reassuring towards the fl. Instead of glowing by himself, he reflects his light to the people that surrounds him.

I could go on and on but I would end my review here. I understand that due to inconsistencies in the script, some people had so much negative to say in this drama. But for me, I would give it a 10/10 overall. I care not what other people say, but I only care on how this drama make me feel.

Revenge Story Female General Story with a bit too much Sugar on the Romance.

First time writing reviews because I thought this one deserved one. The story telling from the start till middle got me really hooked. Who doesn't love a good war + Mulan inspired story with a twist of revenge plot. Fight scenes were well done and both ML and FL played their roles really well. My only points off from perfection for this story is that, the plot started getting too predictable and the last few episode felt as though everything was just going too perfect then the writer were forced to create unreasonable conflict / drama to finish off the story. Although the conflict and concerns were somewhat realistic it kinda gave the story pacing and story felt kinda rushed yet predictable in the last episode although there was more than sufficient story telling.

If you love a good war, revenge story, with 125% Sugar on the romance scene, you'll enjoy the drama regardless. Overall it was still really good and I feel that it deserved the high rating despite the predictability towards the end.

+++ Super CL with Zhou Ye and Ryan Cheng. Kudo to these two actors for their performances, both emotionally and physically, especially in the action scenes.
+++ Story that's more or less realistic and coherent
+++ Effective, fast-paced production, high budget: sublime costumes, believable sets, magnificent battle and fight scenes, high quality CGI
+++ Excellent OSTs

### Sometimes you have to be forgiving to enjoy a drama! There are some obvious inconsistencies in this one (but they're common in these series :)
1/ Who could mistake the female lead disguised as a boy, for a man?? Very feminine body and face, no Adam's apple, typical female voice, etc.
2/ Another drama cliché: as soon as an actor wears a mask, they're unrecognizable :) :) :)
3/ [ep 20] The river where He Yan and the enemy commander fight, isn't deep, since the horses are running in 30 cm of water. But as soon as the enemy is killed and He Yan is thrown into the water, the river becomes a 10 m deep chasm??? which allows the ML to play the rescuer???
4/ Armies are supposed to have tens of thousands of soldiers, however, on screen, except in war scenes (CGI), we never see more than 50 soldiers (whether in camps or in besieged cities). I know that budgets don't allow for hundreds of extras, but it ends up harming the story's credibility.

=> Excellent romantic and historical-military drama (with a small dose of necessary indulgence ;)

PLOT: La FL remplace son frère malade dans l'académie, puis dans l'armée. Elle y gagne des mérites et devient général. Cpdt, à son retour, le frère (guéri et tordu) récupère le nom & la gloire, et envoie sa soeur au temple, puis à la mort. La FL est sauvée et décide de repartir à 0 dans l'armée de Xiao Jue, fils du chef de guerre, trahi par des conspirations liées aux luttes de pouvoir, et ces luttes se perpétuent et le handsome et raffiné Chu Zhao manigance dans l'ombre ...

+++ Super CL avec Zhou Ye et Ryan Cheng. Bravo à ces 2 acteurs pour leur performance, tant au niveau émotionnel qu'au niveau "implication physique" notamment dans les scènes d'action.
+++ Story à peu près réaliste et cohérente
+++ Réalis° efficace, rythmée, gros budget : costumes sublimes, décors crédibles, magnifiques scènes de bataille et de combat, CGI de qualité

### Il faut parfois être indulgent pour apprécier un drama ! On retrouve dans celui-ci de grossières incohérences (mais habituelles dans ces séries :)
1/ Qui pourrait prendre la FL déguisée en garçon pour un homme ?? Carrure, visage très féminin, pas de pomme d'Adam, voix typique de femme, etc.
2/ Un autre poncife des dramas : dès qu'un acteur porte un masque, on ne le reconnait plus :) :) :)
3/ [ép 20] la rivière où se battent He Yan et le commandant ennemis n'est pas profonde, puisque les chevaux courent dans 30 cm d'eau. Mais dès que l'ennemi est tué et que He Yan est projetée dans l'eau, la rivière devient un gouffre de 10 m de profondeur ? ? ? ce qui permet au ML de jouer les sauveteurs ???
4/ Les armées sont supposées avoir des dizaines de milliers de soldats, cpdt à l'écran, hormis dans les scènes d'affrontement de masse (CGI), on ne voit jamais plus de 50 soldats (que ce soit dans les camps ou dans les villes assiégées). Je sais que les budgets ne permettent pas le recrutement de centaines de figurants, mais cela finit par nuire à la crédibilité de l'histoire.

=> Excellent drama romantique et historico-militaire (avec une faible dose d'indulgence nécessaire ;)

I’m especially looking forward to seeing the two main leads collaborate again.

The casting was excellently chosen and perfectly matched the characters’ images. Each actor portrayed their role well and deeply immersed viewers with their emotional performances. I especially love how their chemistry creates a smooth flow throughout the drama. So far, this is the only Chinese costume drama I have truly enjoyed and felt completely engaged with until the end. The production is outstanding and highly realistic, and I appreciate how every cast member delivered strong performances without falling short in their roles. I have high hopes for the cast and wish them many more successful dramas in the future. I’m especially looking forward to seeing the two main leads collaborate again.

The perfect drama and gave exactly what I sexpected from the nivel

A lot of people complain ab this drama that it’s too light and that they expected it to be darker, the novel is not revenge base but based on he yans journey and romance with xiao jue,if people actually got some more infos they would know this is not like ‚‘ My journey to you‘‘ ,‘‘a journey to love‘‘ kinda drama. For me it’s absolutely top tier with action romance and funny moments . People also complain ab he yan being to girly for a general, she doesn’t have to act like a boy in front of ciao jue anymore her real personality came out ,her personality as a girl , she’s bubbly cute in casual moments or to persons she’s close with but she can also be tough and ruthless when is comes to war,enemies etc. The chemistry and cast is top tier couldn’t stop giggling and xiao jues gazes are to soft omg the only thing that I would complain ab is like the episodes their to short they had to cut a lot since china had to approve every ep . So overall absolutely a masterpiece , it became my fav drama . And honourable mention the music is like heavenly so y’all go give it a watch

The most powerful and loving general duo in the history

I've been waiting for this masterpiece since they announced the cast and started booting ceremony. Both of the main leads deliver their chemistry beyong my imagination. It's my first time watch cheng lei's drama and he got my attention right from the start. Not only because of his appearance (his nose is masterpice) but he can deliver sadness and sacrifice's that he did for his clan. And zhou ye? Don't ever ask me.. she's my forever crushhh. I love her acting and her style in this drama.. of course both of them has a beautiful chemistry on / off scene.. hope their friendship last forever.

Keep your expectations low and stay for the main couple.

Legend of the Female General was one of my most anticipated cdramas- I waited around a year for this drama... So, as you can imagine, my expectations were very high (despite not reading the novel before). I'm someone who enjoys dramas with a strong fl so that's why I waited so long, watching each episode whenever it comes out etc.

Now the review:

There were definitely a lot of plot holes, and unnecessary deaths that could've very much been avoided. But other than that, I would say that its a pretty good drama(?)- I'm not about to take off points just because of a few characters and plot lines.

The war/battle scenes were good but I am a teeny tiny bit disappointed. I would've preferred more quality and less quantity.

Can't believe it was possible for me to hate a character this much but Chu Zhao pissed me off until the very last episode... He Rufei and Xu Jing Fu didn't even make me this mad. Chu Zhao's appearance was so much more frequent that the main couple and it was so annoying lol. There was way too much focus on his character, background, and just anything he was doing. It felt like they were just trying to fill up time and using him to add (unnecessary) drama. His appearances just caused too much disturbance and messed up the flow of the plot a lot. Anyways, I would say the villains lacked depth and it was pretty messy since something would happen and eventually during the "revenge" (ig) they would just be thrown to jail or die- which is pretty underwhelming. They were very 2D and not convincing as a real "villain" ig.

I wish there was more to the ending. I binged the six episodes that came out today and I was shocked to see how much of it was just with the Emperor and in battles. The wedding and all was okay like I understand it was a hurdle for them since it wasn't approved but I just hoped there was a tiny bit more after or just anything. It took them too long to be officially together, and since I really enjoyed this couple, I was a bit let down by the ending.

Despite all the negative things I said, I would still give it a 9.5 since I still found it really enjoyable. The drama had my full attention and had me waiting for the new episodes every day. Makes me kind of sad that it's over tbh. If you're thinking of watching, I would say: keep your expectations low and stay for the main couple.

Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei had great chemistry and I really enjoyed them together for this drama. Hopefully they have another one together soon. Both their acting was superb. I couldn't imagine anyone else as Xiao Jue and He Yan.
