Unrealistic
It's an ok entertainment if you ignore all logic and become dumb while watching this show. I am not sure why but it seems to be a common theme in some C dramas for women to pretend to be a man and supposedly nobody notices? Seriously? This drama storyline is an example where the FL joins the army as a man and everybody seems to be blind and believe it, even though she is obviously a woman. Her behavior is going between a tough talking "solder" and a silly, nagging, giggling female and still nobody notices? Not to mention the fight scenes where a small female is throwing around huge, strong male warriors, totally ridiculous and fully unbelievable!Positive, I loved the music/songs, the period customs were beautiful. The acting was pretty good, especially the side characters. I would not watch this C drama again. Totally unrealistic, boring, waste of time.

a solid 10 from me
I was not expecting a lot as I started this drama. first episode and she gets killed, falls of a cliff and wakes up a bit later. i was thinking wth. but I have to say it was great. no stupid women jealousy storyline with bullying and all that. a hint of it but it was squashed. i loved that because we are not like that. yes there are women like this but we support each other and I always hate how this stereotype of women fighting each other over a man is portrayed. the fl was amazing. i loved her so much. i loved her acting, her fighting, her entire character and her beauty. the fact that she saved him in the end just made it perfect for me. i loved that the ml gave her space and let her be who she wanted to be. the only thing that bothered me was that the storyline of the scholar was left open. I wanted to see him fall despite his soft and gentle demeanor I wanted to see him suffer lol. i liked most of the ost but I feel Liu Yuning would have been the better choice to sing it. the chemistry was great and the fight scenes of all of them was breathtaking. the happy ending made me happy too 🥰Was this review helpful to you?

One of the best Chinese drama in 2025 - for me
It all started when I was just trying to find a drama to help me move on from another drama, so I didn't expect much. But I got so hooked. I'm glad I watched it when all the episodes had already come out. I loveeeee the chemistry between the leads and that it was more of a slow burn. Again, I haven't seen such good chemistry in a long time. It made you keep wondering when they will end up together, even though the feelings might already be there. I also really like the female character; as a general/soldier, they showed her to be disciplined as a soldier should be.The story is not perfect, but it is still a drama I can rewatch over and over again.

why didn't I watch this sooner?
StoryThis is a Hua Mulan-esque story, with villains who act villainously for the sake of being a villain (if you get what I mean). The story is by no means unique, original without any cliches but EVERY EPISODE was a breeze to watch. It's interesting, and I rewind moments that I accidentally miss. Even with my busy schedule, I managed to binge it in less than a week! Not entirely sure why the rating is this low, and I don't see the plot concerns that other reviewers have. This is an easy watch, with spurts of cute romance and BURSTS of cool action scenes! It’s not heavy on the politics and any politics is easily digested and well-explained. If you want cute romance and only that, then maybe this has too much action for you. I thought ep 34 was a nice way to end the show, it was a really heartwarming episode but they randomly threw a spanner in ep 35. Watch and you'll know what I mean....
Acting/cast
Cheng Lei excels in cold, stone-faced general roles, and his vibes really fit. From what I understand, he does his own stunts; HE DOES THEM REALLY WELL. Zhou Ye is a cute actress, and I think her acting is really good. I hope we'll get to see them acting in a modern drama together; their chemistry was CHEMISTRYING. I know there were complaints about the casting because of the height diff between her and Bai Shu, making the plot a bit unrealistic (yep how can a person suddenly shrink by close to 15cm? idk).
Music
REALLY NICE MUSIC. zhangyuan, curley gao, zhou shen... the lineup is crazy.
Rewatch Value
110% would rewatch, it's an easy watch that can help destress. It has a plot without being too overbearingly political.
Overall
This drama was a really easy watch with interesting episodes. Some episodes were super cute so I will surely rewatch them, even if I don't rewatch the whole thing... BUT WHY WOULDN'T I REWATCH THE WHOLE SERIES??

Great characters, fun and refreshing story
LOTFG is the best C drama I’ve seen in awhile. For the last year, I have probably been fast forwarding through every drama I’ve watched or at least fast forwarding through the angst arc. I just haven’t had the patience for the typical C drama formula. However, I love Zhou Ye and I like Ryan Cheng in FoF, so I figured I’d give this a chance, and it did not disappoint. The story itself is a bit cliche, but the way it was executed really made this a joy to watch. There is never any dumb misunderstanding, the one or two “fights” they had are barely fights as this is a healthy relationship where they know and understand each other deep down. He Yan constantly flirting with Xiao Jue is fun to watch, and his more quiet and serious love for her is also a fun contrast. The side characters are all fun as well.
To me, this felt more like slice of life in a historical drama. I felt like they were friends that I wanted to tell me about their story, and I was never irritated during any drawn out angst arc. I know the last couple episodes got criticism, but even those, I just enjoyed watching them be a couple and show us all how much they loved each other.
I miss these characters a lot, and I would love a season 2 or modern drama with the main leads! I’m about to rewatch now actually but wanted to come here and express my appreciation of this good story with great characters before starting again.

One of the important point is that He Yan is more involved in the political situation (inside and mostly outside the government) with her family and plotting how she's gonna face the people she met. Tactically not so much shown in this drama, the only tactically master (while facing the army of her enemy) she did was while using dummies to get arrows, kinda Zhu GeLiang's tactic🗿.
For me through this whole serial drama, there is NO boring episodes, each of them is really exiciting (for me at least)!!!
For anyone who loved romance stories with caring too much about the story and plot about wars, THIS IS THE ONE!!! The fighting scenes are great! but not tactically as general. I've been a big fan of Zhou Ye this few years, this drama's main leads, BOTH Zhou Ye as He Yan and Cheng Lei as Jiao Xue, the roles fit them so well. I don't know how to describe it but the chemistry of them both are insane! Especially from Zhou Ye, I felt like something different from her this time. The way they acted so great feels so natural especially Zhou Ye. I'm want to ship them so much. I'm not a really big fan of romance drama, but I watched every Zhou Ye's drama, I'd say this couple (just from the leads) is just PEAK throughout this year!!!
The soundtrack and music, I enjoyed jt so much the melody is so nice. Found the instrumental musics in Spotify and it's great!
Overall I'd give it a 10, too little for 9.5 and too much for 10 actually, should've give this a 9.7 due to that early stage of the story, but it's covered well when passed a few episodes. I love the couple SOOOOO MUCH!!!🥹😭🙏 THEY'RE TOO CUTE!! literally had me crashout while both of them are in action!!! As a big fan of Zhou Ye, so happy to see her lively and happy while watching the compilation of the behind the scenes🥰🫶
And for the production and scriptwriter team... YOU COULD'VE MAKE THIS THE BEST FILM OF THE YEAR!!! You the best actor and actress for the role, and a lot of great support roles especially the one I forgot to mention is Zhang Kang Le as Chu Zhao! Come on production team, I won't say you bottled it, but you owe Zhou Ye and Cheng Lei the best drama of the year!

A MUST WATCH CDRAMA
this drama is honestly so enjoyable and exciting from the start till the end, i finished this drama the fastest without feeling it draggedWhile there were some parts of the storyline that didn't seem so necessary but generally it still flowed beautifully.
Zhou Ye's acting and martial arts skills is truly exciting to watch every scene and Cheng Lei's acting, he has such charisma even with just his eyes doing the acting.

One of the Best Masterpiece 2025
He Yan, our FL, was born into a noble family whose eldest son He Rufei, born sick and frail. Upon receiving diagnosis that the boy wouldn’t live long, they decided to swap He Yan to assume the role in order to avoid their noble title being revoked with no male heir. So henceforth starts He Yan being raised as a boy, and as her feminine features started to be more evident, her family made her wear a mask 24/7 even while sleeping. One day she decided to run away from home when she overheard her parents discussing about her marriage to a girl, and went to enlist in the army. Despite being a mediocre student at school, always ranking last or second last, she rose to prominence in the army. On the day she returned home after receiving General Feihong title from the emperor, she finally got to meet the step brother she was subtituting for, He Rufei. A reunion that she thought was supposed to be happy, turned out to be her death sentence. She passed out from being poisoned, and when she came to, she discovered that she had turned blind. The family sent her to the temple where He Rufei had grew up in, and later He Rufei sent his bodyguard to kill He Yan to keep the secret sealed. She was stabbed with a sword, and fell off a cliff into a body of water. She thought she had died, but eventually woke up in a house. It was her shifu who had rescued her, and cured her blind eyes. Then starts her journey to enlist into ML’s army, starting from the bottom again, but this time she was not mediocre anymore. She became the num 1 recruit in the camp, with a mission to gather enough military merits to stand as high as He Rufei and reclaim her title.I must say Zhou Ye is not bad as a cross dresser, didnt look too feminine especially in the chest area, though her character did not look as rough as Zhang Tian An’s A Mai in Fighting for Love. I still think Zhang Tian An is the best cross dresser out there, Zhou Ye being the second. I like how she smiles so wide to emulate the carefree and mischievous air of the novel He Yan. She is nimble and wields weapons convincingly good, never looking weak or clumsy like some other actress who took up female warrior roles that i’ve seen, so I can tell that she worked real hard to make the role work. She is also very expressive and able to convey her emotion accurately. This is the first time that I saw her work, and I am impressed at how she managed to blend the mixed emotions of the cheerful ever so carefree He Yan and the gloomy and sombre look whenever she recalled her previous life as a substitute to He Rufei. The change of emotions are really seamless, with her wide smile basically holding the key.
As for the ML, I have always felt the Ryan has an air of a male lead after watching his performance in My Journey to You. This is my second show of him, and of course he did not disappoint. I knew he can deliver the cold and ruthless role of Xiao Jue, as his role in My Journey To You was even more complex and hardcore. So his performance in LotFG was explosive. Being the second son in a military family with the eldest’s constitution not suitable to carry the army flag, Xiao Jue had to be the one to continue his father’s legacy. He had to train twice as hard to live up to the expectation, making him revered by all but living like an empty shell as he bottles up everything. He Yan became the first of everything for him, even before he realized she was a girl. She became his spark of life.
The storyline is very engaging, and I finished bingeing in less than 3 days. I am glad they changed the plot to assasination survival instead of the cliche reborn into another’s body like in the novel. The adaptation’s plot is more believable and connected than the novel’s. It always bothered me that novel He Yan never got to personally reclaim her General Feihong title because she was in another person’s body. All she could do was reveal the deceit of her previous family to restore the claim to the dead He Yan. It’s just not quite as fullfilling. Am so glad the screenwriter changed this flaw.
I really love the action choreograph, really fluid with mesmerising moves, i truly commend the choreoghrapher. The battle scenes, the sword fights, the clashings are all impressive and amazing. The supporting casts are all very talented and impressive.
The themesongs are the bomb! With names like Curley Gao and Zhou Shen of course they wouldnt disappoint. I’m totally adding them to my running playlist!
SPOILER BEYOND THIS LINE!!

In the novel He Yan never got to call her mother, ever. Not when she was a child because they prevented them from meeting and not after she emerged from the ashes of death as she was reborn into another person’s body. I am glad she and her mother finally got the chance in the adaptation to properly reconcile and that she was able to grieve openly for her.
Yingxiang’s death was less tragic than the novel, but definitely very laughable. I would think for a martial artist like her, it’d be easier to deflect the knife wielded by a frail woman like Xu Pingting than slip her body in between them to bear the brunt for her beloved young master. Like seriously? That short of a distance and she actually manage to squeeze between them to take the stab when she was originally standing behind Chu Zhao? Omg i laughed instead of feeling sad at her demise - i like her character very much. They could at least make Xu Pingting stab a sword or shoot an arrow from a distance to make it more realistic. Or make her pull Chu Zhao to stand behind her and then take the stab. Any of those are definitely physically easier to do that trying to sqeeze in between. It’s truly pitiful that her role was so minor that she couldnt survive a 3-inch deep stab to the shoulderblade. Had her role been a more important one, she wouldve survived arrows, spears or swords being stabbed straight to the gut, or stabbed with a hook right through (like how he yan survived 😆). Yingxiang’s death had been more realistic in the novel in this part.

WATCH IT NOW IF YOU LOVE LOVE LIKE ME!!!
I did not read the novel. But even if I had I am not a purist. Even while watching western shows and webtoon adapted kdramas,I always treat the novel and book differently.I have never reviewed a drama before but I HAD TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT BECAUSE THIS DRAMA IS AMAZING!!! I LOVED IT SO SO SO MUCH.
The love story is insanely beautiful. The leads's chemistry is on fire. They are so gorgeous together and there is so much tension right off the bat.
Also Cheng Lei's each confession tops the other. Xiao Jue had the audacity to say : "She is my view, my mind, my heart" in front of the whole court. GODDDDD.
The battle scenes are so beautifully choregraphed especially the one where she uses the whip and the ones where He Yan and Xiao Jue fight together. And I love that we get so many battles for He Yan to flex her skills.
The show has everything: romance, humor and epic fights. Such a fantastic fun watch.
The last 2 episodes were kind of annoying but Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye acted so well in that episode. I could literally feel their heartbreak.
Both Xiao Jue and He Yan are such deep characters. We see so many layers for both. Xiao Jue starts all serious but is so hopelessly in love and you can see his love in the way he smiles and stares at He Yan. Beautiful!!. And He Yan gosh the way that girl slips from one mode to another is fantastic. That scene in ep 9 where she goes from rage and anger to cheerful and happy in split second. Master acting!!!
Anyway I repeat LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW. WATCH IT NOW EVERYONE!!!!

A Surprisingly Addictive Watch!
If you go into this drama with no expectations, you’re in for a treat! It kicks off strong by introducing the main characters right away—no dragging things out. The hot spring fight scene was a standout for me—so entertaining! I only wish there were more scenes like that. One thing I really appreciated was that the male lead discovers the female lead’s true identity early on. I’m so over dramas where the ML is confused for half the show about why he's drawn to a "guy"—that trope is played out. Here, the secret identity angle unfolds at a great pace, and it's satisfying to watch her slowly reclaim her position as a general while he quietly supports her behind the scenes.
That said, I was a bit frustrated that the ML couldn’t recognize that the “general” at court was a fake. Seriously—he's known the real general’s build and voice for years! That part didn’t sit well with me.
Still, the sword dance scene? *Incredible.* I’m absolutely hooked and counting down the days for each new episode!
