The lead character is a hot mess
At the end of episode 4 I was thinking that this was going to be a solid 10 and then it all went downhill.Considering the premise was that the FL had huge success posing as male and becoming a general, after episode 4, either the writers, the actress, the director or all of the above - completely forgot about this and the FL went from a strong female posing as a male to the typical whining, childish, cutesy female character we see so often in c-dramas.
WHYYYY!!!! So frustrating.
However, Ryan Cheng was incredible. I have not seen him in any other roles but he was so enigmatic and had a quiet intensity that definitely drew me in
Sadly, you cant skip the bad bits when the whole story is centred around one particular character and the FL became unbearable for me.

Watching the drama and then reading the book to compare
Lately, I've been wanting to read books by 千山茶客 because her novels' adapted dramas have been well received.Note: I watched the entire drama at 1.5 speed and found it just right. I did start at normal speed, got bored, stopped for half a year, then came back, starting from the beginning. If parts seem draggy, maybe watch at 1.5 speed.
This drama does not disappoint. I think the plot was quite good, no glaring loop holes. I've been watching Cheng Lei dramas back when he was only doing short dramas and this is the first of his full length dramas that I've watched. He did not disappoint.
I like Zhou Ye in Love Me, Love My Voice and it was pretty cool to see her playing such a different role.
Regarding voice dubbing...I'm not sure why they chose to dub all the mains and the important support roles. Usually, at least some of the mains/seconds will dub their own voice. Perhaps the actors were busy? In any case, Zhou Ye does have a naturally higher voice so I can see why they would go with someone with a deeper female voice. Cheng Lei's voice, if I remember from A Familiar Stranger, would have been fine. Maybe scheduling just didn't work out.
I've also been following Zhang Kang Le since he debuted and I thought he did a great job playing such a complicated character in this drama!
Looking forward to reading the book and seeing how it differs from the drama! If you want a good revenge story though, pretty much all of 千山茶客's books are rebirth/revenge. The censorship probably got rid of the dying/rebirth bits (The Double doesn't have rebirth in the drama as well, but it's there at the beginning of the book!), but the revenge is still there.
Edit: I finished reading the book. IT IS HILARIOUS!!! This is my favorite book of this author so far. It’s less revenge heavy and more personal growth/healing from past. The drama is probably 60-70% similar to the book with several minor characters turning into “two combined into one.” The ending is also significantly different. Still, I thought it was closer to the book than “The Double.”

Definitely would rewatch
A great drama, I love the cast, songs and the story so much!I went through all emotions watching this, I laughed, cried, giggled, excited, sad, amused, surprised and frustrated! It’s really well done, amazing drama, definitely recommend .
The ML and FL have really good chemistry, the plot is also good.
The last too episodes felt like it dragged a little, but otherwise the whole drama was great.
I really like Zhou Ye’s acting, some people say that she’s too girlish for this role, but I think she portrayed it super well.
I really liked the supporting casts too.
It’s in my top 5 beat Cdramas I’ve watched !

Amazing
I am literally speechless about the drama called "The Legend Of The Female General" everything was absolutely perfect. Both leads were perfectly matched 👌🏿 👏🏿 BRAVO 👏🏿. The fighting scene was explosive to my opinion, I teared up a lot in some scenes, and get mad at the same time. Overall it was a masterpiece ✨️ It will sitting in my watch list to binge on every once in awhile ✨️I wasn't disappointed at all, I understand some scenes needed to happen for a reason. I'd recommend it any time anyone asks.

Zhou Ye as the female general is the embodiment of what a true female warrior should be—fierce, intelligent, strategic, resilient, and utterly commanding on the battlefield and beyond. She brings unparalleled strength, grace, and depth to the role, portraying a leader who inspires loyalty, fights for justice, and never compromises her principles. Her performance is empowering and iconic; she owns every scene with quiet power and unyielding spirit. This is the gold standard for female leads in historical dramas!
And then there's Cheng Lei—oh my goodness, he is phenomenal! His eye acting alone is masterful, conveying layers of emotion, passion, and intensity with just a glance that left me weak in the knees countless times. He brings magnetic charisma, nuanced vulnerability, and raw power to his character, making every moment he's on screen electrifying. Cheng Lei's performance is a revelation—he carries the drama with effortless brilliance and chemistry that sparks off the charts.
Huge praise to the entire cast—they're all outstanding, delivering performances that feel authentic and immersive, with no weak links anywhere. The supporting actors elevate every subplot and bring the world to vivid life.
But the standout highlight? The fighting scenes—these are the best I've seen in a historical C-drama in years, possibly the best ever! Choreographed to perfection, realistic yet cinematic, intense and visceral, with epic scale that had me on the edge of my seat. The battles are thrilling, strategic, and beautifully shot—pure adrenaline!
This drama made the book version incredibly proud with its faithful yet enhanced adaptation, stunning visuals, emotional OST, and heart-pounding romance. 10/10 in my book—perfection that I'll rewatch forever!

"I love the moon but the moon doesn't know"
THE FIRST HISTORICAL CDRAMA THAT I FINISHED and still wanna keep watchingI love this drama a little too much that idk how to move on currently typing this while listening to the osts on Spotify on repeat
and just finished rewatching this for like the nth time .
Do you ever find that drama where the actors are made for the role .
The story actually teaches u something
It's like so many lessons so many adventures all packed like that in an anime .
You would get such depth in every character
It would feel like being part of an era
The friendships , the emotions , a love as bright and beautiful like the moon.
Plus the acting is so good that u wouldn't even feel it's acting it's like literally so natural .
I'm glad I got to watch this drama

Entertaining
The poor reviews are really uncalled for. This series is genuinely entertaining, with strong chemistry and convincing performances from the main leads. The action choreography is exceptional, and it’s clear the actors put in serious training to handle the various weapons convincingly.Yes, the storyline has its flaws and a few plot holes, but this is fiction after all. If you take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy it for what it is, it’s a fun and engaging watch rather than something to nitpick over.

I don't regret watching it
I'm not saying the story line and the script couldn't be better, it had space for improvement. but overall it was worth the watch. Specially the fight scene choreography was very good. I choose to watch wuxia due to its strong leads and martial art scenes and deep sayings of ancient chinese literature that they add in here and there. Although this one lacked the latter and due to some cutting, some parts felt rushed like the last episode battle, the fight scences were good. I enjoyed watching it. I don't enjoy overexagerrated and too unrealistic fight scenes with breathing fire and water and stuff in the fantacy genres :))).Was this review helpful to you?
Turn your brain off and enjoy
I came into this drama with no expectations and without reading any spoilers (very rare these days. )That said... I.Love.This.Drama! Perfectly balanced- action with light humor, romance with the right amount of angst, great villains, greater but vulnerable heroes. No bloated episode count keeps the episodes tight. Action and times of tenderness and friendship keep the drama moving without unnecessary plot points. I will re-watch again and again. Was it perfectly perfect? No. But in the high 9 range. Were there some cringey effects? Yes, but not too many. Well done drama crew and actors! Thanks subbing team!!Was this review helpful to you?
Slay Queen Meets Droopy-Eyed Prince ?⚔️⭐️
⭐️⚔️ "The Legend of the Female GeneralThis drama was everything I hoped for and a little extra sparkle on top. The female lead; my tiny little firecracker star, carried the role with so much charisma, sass, and heart that I could not take my eyes off her. She’s tough when needed, soft when it counts, and always radiates charm. The male lead? Let’s just say those droopy, emotion-packed eyes of his could start wars AND end them 💔🔥. Sexy doesn’t even begin to cover it.
The chemistry between the two was so natural it felt like they’d been married off-screen too. No endless break-up angst (hallelujah 🙌) – just a small hiccup that got wrapped up quickly. I loved that we weren’t dragged through unnecessary tears. Instead, we got plenty of action scenes that were choreographed to perfection. Sword fights, battles, strategies – chef’s kiss 🍜⚔️.
The villains? Swiftly and satisfyingly taken care of ✔️ (none of that endless dragging where you yell at the screen, “Just finish him already!”). I also appreciated the emotional depth given to the second male lead. Yes, his jealous streak was the only “meh” filler part for me 😅, but hey, he redeemed himself after losing everything. Character growth is always welcome.
And the supporting cast deserves their flowers too 🌸🌸 – they nailed their roles and kept the drama rich and layered.
💬 Final Verdict: A solid, addictive watch with sizzling chemistry, strong leads, badass action, and an emotional core that hits just right. 10/10 for me. Would definitely rewatch the highlights again (and by highlights, I mean every time ML smolders with those droopy eyes 👀🔥).
