Romcom with bloody zombies.

The comedic timing is done well, this is not melodrama depressing thriller nor a cute romcom with hot naked ML. As someone who barely has time for tv, this is something you can watch for quick entertainment. Even if you randomly pick any scenes, it'll be fine.

It feels a bit movie-like than tv series because of the quick and clear pace. Can say it's simple and straight forward as we know they'll fight zombies and meet at the end, and their strong point are the actors. BUT, zombies action scenes can change the overall point. Their chemistry are great so it'll be fun to watch them fight.

It's not cliche, I've watched it 3 times and each time I still got uncomfortable with the zombies

You won't go 'woah' but you will laugh, cry a bit, and lose appetite with the gore. Their zombies have variety, some are like in horror movie, I think it's more gore than Kingdom.

You will root with the FL right away, not because she's Jisoo the popular star, but the plot made her likeable, and also sympathize about the uncertainty. They threw in few clues that the FL is not meek, also she was certain she can go on her own to Tower A. So far she's been level headed amidst the chaos.

The ML, his over the top humor makes him quirky but him being pushover to his gf will leave viewer not be on his side, at first. The next part with zombies did show him leading them in fight. He knows what'll work but he's not really brave for a soldier.

I'll review again when the whole thing released.

must watch series newtopia

Newtopia is a refreshing and comedic twist on the classic zombie genre, expertly blending thrills, humor, and a heartfelt love story set against the backdrop of a collapsing world. The series centers on Jaeyoon, a tough soldier, and his girlfriend Youngjoo, who is stuck in a long-distance relationship with him due to their roles in a zombie-ravaged Korea. Though their love is undeniable, constant misunderstandings, miscommunications, and zombie chaos disrupt their connection in hilariously unexpected ways.

In a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies, Newtopia showcases the struggle for survival in a crumbling society, where military soldiers, including Jaeyoon, try to maintain order while avoiding being consumed by the undead. Jaeyoon is stationed at the frontlines, while Youngjoo is trapped in a quarantine zone, separated by distance and the ever-present threat of zombies. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple faces the trials of an LDR (long-distance relationship) in a time where there is no time for love, but only survival.

The show thrives on the humor derived from their failed attempts at communication and the misunderstanding that keep happening between them. While Jaeyoon’s military duties keep him distracted, Youngjoo’s frustration with the constant lack of contact grows. At the same time, Jaeyoon’s interactions with his fellow soldier, Ra In-ho, provide a lot of comic relief and ridiculous situations amidst the zombie chaos.

newtopia my favorite series

In the wake of a zombie outbreak, Newtopia is one of the last safe zones where humans can survive, but even in this isolated place, life is anything but easy. Jaeyoon, a soldier, has to balance the dangerous and unpredictable nature of his job with his commitment to his long-distance relationship with Youngjoo. Their love is real, but the circumstances of the apocalypse make it nearly impossible to communicate properly.

Jaeyoon and Youngjoo, despite their deep affection for each other, face the usual issues of long-distance relationships—misunderstandings, communication breakdowns, and the frustrations of only connecting via sporadic phone calls and video chats. The ongoing zombie attacks create constant interruptions, making their moments of connection both hilarious and heartbreaking. Adding to the chaos is Jaeyoon’s relationship with his fellow soldier, Ra In-ho, whose antics provide plenty of comic relief during the most intense moments.

Characters and Chemistry
Jaeyoon, the tough and stoic soldier, contrasts wonderfully with Youngjoo, who is trying her best to stay optimistic despite the separation. Their chemistry is undeniable, with Jaeyoon's vulnerability shining through during their video calls or brief moments of contact. The series excels at showing their love, even as it’s constantly put to the test by the chaos of their world.

Youngjoo’s character is full of heart and humor as she navigates the stress of the apocalypse and the frustration of trying to keep her relationship with Jaeyoon afloat. Their misunderstandings are both comedic and relatable, with Youngjoo often feeling neglected or unsure about Jaeyoon’s commitment, especially when technical difficulties or zombies disrupt their conversations.

It’s a CAMP zombie comedy drama

i rarely watch zombie drama but the way they promoted newtopia is that is zombie, romance and comedy. so i got curious, the only zombie comedy i’ve watched was zombieland. 2 episodes in and so far it’s good. i love how exaggerated everything is in newtopia! the first episode is slow-paced but it’s understandable, but when you get to the 2nd episode everything was chaos (in a good way).

i like the chemistry of jeong-min and jisoo. i hope we see more backstory.

it’s only 8 episodes, so i hope they don’t insert unnecessary storyline.

i will definitely finish this zomromcom. i will comeback for another review after all the episodes.

A truly zomcom series

usually zombie series or movies are serious & tensed because the characters are trying to survive & defending themselves from zombie while trying to figure out how to stop the cause of the madness. but Newtopia is different. since it's a comedy series, it's watchable by various group of age. while keeping the zombie theme, the comedy theme is well balanced in Newtopia. the amount of bloody scenes made you wanna scream & close your eyes while watching the series but at the same time you don't wanna miss the hilarious moments from both Park Jeongmin's team & Jisoo's team. 1st episode is a bit slow, as it's an introduction episode to the characters & their situations. but the series's
pace is beginning to get faster & the storyline starting to get more interesting in episode 2. starting as a campus couple, Lee Jaeyoon & Kang Youngjoo already been a couple for 5 years when Lee Jaeyoon had to serves his military service like we always heard about korean man aged 19-30yo had to do & Kang Youngjoo just started working in a company. stressed at the military based & stressed at the company made them broke up. I guess this happened a lot in reality because to be separated for almost 2 years did pressure a relationships so much. Park Jeongmin & Jisoo did a great job acting as a stressed long distance couple that had to break up because both aren't handling their situations well. Kang Youngjoo's sunbae obviously trying to make his move on her (I don't like his character) but Youngjoo really loves Jaeyoon & wanna set thing right between them. I'm actually happy that the writer made the storyline so that they try to patch things up again. I'm excited to see them reunited again in future episodes. honestly this is my only second time watching Park Jeongmin's drama & Jisoo's drama. I watched Hellbound & that's the first time watching Park Jeongmin. I am amazed by his acting skill. he embodies his character perfectly & he made me wanna watch his projects more someday. watched Jisoo's drama Snowdrop & actually I'm only interested in Im Sooho & Eun Youngro & the drama's OST compared to the drama itself because of the genre is quite heavy & serious. You can tell Jisoo's acting has improved a lot in Newtopia compared to Snowdrop, her debuts drama. I feel like she's getting more familiar & comfortable to emerge with her character & to bring out her character to life & she's so fun to watch. she has husky voice & some people likes woman with softer voice but that doesn't matter to me. good acting & delivering the character's emotions & lines is what I want to see & Jisoo totally nailed it. it's as if the writer made Kang Youngjoo with Jisoo in her mind because it suits Jisoo so well. waiting for next episode excitedly yeah. people should watch Park Jeongmin's exceptional acting skill & Jisoo's development to be a top actress. loving them both 🫶🏻

Watch it now!

A fun and refreshing take on zomcoms. 10/10. No notes! LOVE everything about the series. Cannot wait for all of the episodes to drop! Been rewatching episodes 1 and 2 since February 7. (: You will experience a whirlwind of emotions from anger to love to sadness and grief. The actors breathed life into the characters they are playing and you will find yourself rooting for both their love and survival.

Is the Korean Drama Newtopia (2025) the new Mr Queen of comedy?

Newtopia (2025) is silly, but it is silly enough to be hilarious, if you get the jokes. I did get the jokes, and like the Korean Drama ‘Frankly Speaking’, I see so much at which to laugh. Newtopia is a farce of a drama. Even down to the miscues of the actors (Like one actor almost falling off of the bed until he caught his balance), Utopia is not intended to be a serious comedy. The story melds together a major break-up of lovers and places the guy trying to win back the girl in the middle of a zombie holocaust. This drama will work for some and not for others. It works for me. I am laughing my rear end off with real tears.

Newtopia certainly does not take itself seriously. In the middle of a Military holocaust practice drill, two soldiers drop a missile in front of the loads of Military higher-ups and the Company Commander, but fortunately it does not go off. What to do? Oh this is obvious. They say, “Boom! All of us are dead!” as they take to the ground and pretend that they are dead. Well after all, this is a practice run for realtime action.

In another scene, a car driver hits a pedestrian and the pedestrian crashes through the windshield, losing an eyeball, which lands on the female passenger. The eyeball is put on top of the car, while the female passenger solicits help from a male passerby to get the pedestrian safely removed from the windshield. The male driver is panicking. The passerby places the hot dog he is eating next to the eyeball while he helps the female lift the victim out of the car windshield. The male driver then yells, “Don’t do that! You have to preserve the accident scene”. There are littles scenes like these throughout Newtopia which have me dying on the floor with laughter.

If you get dry humor and dark humor, Newtopia will have you needing a hernia operation after viewing. However, the f-word is dropped, occasionally. There is some cursing in the two episodes I viewed thus far. Some Korean dramas are becoming Americanized.

Let me get a little preachy. Hands down, Newtopia is the funniest drama I have seen since Mr Queen. It could have easily broken into my Top 25 of all time with a 10/10. The humor is gut-busting. However for me, Newtopia suffered from Americanization by using the new accepted adjective burned into the English Lexicon, the F-word. It is used as a noun, adjective and adverb in the American Film and Drama Industry. Now this shortcut to spoken conversation is fully infiltrating the Korean Film and Drama Industry to align itself with so-called American taste. Cursing just is not my taste and it is one reason for my exist from American TV.

When I saw that fan favorite Ji Soo of Black Pink would be in Newtopia, I did not think that I needed to check the ratings. My Bad. Cursing seems to be the new romance (Pun intended). While Newtopia is far from the worse case scenario of late for the use of the new noun, adjective, and adverb, the use of cursing narrows the pool of potential people to whom I am willing to recommend this drama.

Worth Watching

I really liked the drama. It was worth watching. It’s a mix of action, survival, and human drama. With thrilling sequences, deep storytelling, and emotional stakes, these dramas keep viewers on edge while delivering meaningful messages. If you love high-stakes survival stories with gripping narratives, a Korean zombie drama is a must-watch!
