The first 3 episodes were slow but the series picked up starting on the 4th one. The comedy on the part of the soldiers wasnt really hitting but maybe the treatment was to make it slapstick. When the story got more serious and centered on the zombies, where the action and suspense picked up, the series became more engaging. Not perfect but a good watch.

OLD SCHOOL COMEDY LOVERS THIS ONE'S FOR YOU

This drama is unhinged, gory, good comedy, loser characters. It has everything I personally like. It has very realistic zombies, characters are goofy, cartoon type music, comedic body language. All the points for a good 2000s comedy. If you love that you'll love this.
Zombie-comedy is a new genre I believe but I didn't know they could go so well together. The ribs cracking scene, the lead running away from the zombie, the extra af hotel chief manager. I love if from the get go. And I look forward to more episodes.

PS:- Would've have given 10/10 if it wasn't for one of the scenes not making sense. There was just 1 scene where the zombie crashes into a car but like nobody cares? People are just casually driving by that scene. I guess that's also very realistic, people drive by real life accidents because "they don't want to get involved".

PS again cause the comments are pretty frustrating:-
I will never understand people who watch this drama even if it's not a genre they would go for usually. I get the fans of the actors coming to watch this because they love the actors. But other people, why are you even watching a drama which you will most usually never watch.

I don't like Sci fi. So I simply don't give an opinion on any Sci fi movie cause I know I won't like it, it's not a genre I enjoy so I won't write "it's bad", "it's not fun", "it's overhyped" in the comments. That ruins the experience for people who genuinely enjoy the genre. People will call it their opinion but in all reality you don't like watching a drama like this, so naturally you'll have a negative reaction to this. This is common in MDL. JUST DON'T GIVE YOUR OPINION IF ITS NOT A GENRE YOU LIKE.

Let me start off by saying this, Newtopia deserves more than a 7.5 rating.. Sure, May not have had a unique storyline or offered anything different from what we have seen from other dramas except the comedy maybe.. Had way too many flaws and had issues with the screenplay and the pacing.. But still this drama is worth the 6+ hours you spend watching it.. It’s got this vibe that makes it feel different in a good way.. This might be a funny show but it has some serious undertones.. I started this drama without much expectations but ended up feeling it was short.. It deserved at least two more episodes..

Park Jeong Min and Ji Soo were were solid.. Ji Soo felt bland at times but honestly she was pretty fun to watch.. And I absolutely loved the supporting cast.. Kim Joon Han as Aaron Park was super cool..

I liked the Express Bus Terminal Arc, thats the final episode.. Her illusion about that Bus terminal staff which leads her to safety and a moment of peace on her journey to Jae Yun.. The team not giving up on Aaron park.. The ML, who spent most of the drama fumbling his gun suddenly started nailing every shot as he got closer to finding her.. And The friends going back to save Jae Yun and Yeong Ju.. I think the final episode made me feel that even in the middle of madness there are people who still try, still care and still show up for one another..

Overall Newtopia is a good drama that is underrated.. I don’t think it’s just a comedy or horror.. I think its about people who feel a little lost, a little weird, a little clueless and are doing their best anyway.. The script doesn’t try to judge or solve anything.. It just captures that messy, stubborn will to keep going.. Even when the world’s gone to hell.

A great take on love and chaos

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Newtopia, but after watching the first two episodes, I can say it’s already pulling me in. The mix of romance, action, and zombies is definitely something different, and I like how they’re balancing the emotional moments with the intensity of the outbreak.

First off, Park Jeong-min and Jisoo’s chemistry feels real. Their relationship doesn’t seem forced, and you can actually feel the emotions between them, especially in the flashback scenes. It makes you want to root for them, which is important in a show like this.

The zombie outbreak scenes were well-executed. The way they built up the tension was really good—it wasn’t just mindless jump scares but more about how fast things went from normal to absolute chaos. The cinematography really adds to the whole apocalyptic vibe, especially with the way they show Seoul turning into this terrifying mess.

That being said, I feel like the pacing was a bit slow in some parts, but I get that they’re trying to develop the story and characters before diving into full zombie madness. I’m hoping that the next episodes keep up the intensity and don’t drag too much.

Overall, Newtopia has started strong. It’s got emotional depth, great visuals, and an interesting storyline. I can’t say yet if it’s going to be amazing all the way through, but for now, I’m definitely excited to see where it goes!

Another Underwhelming Zombie Drama

Like many people, I watched this drama for Jisoo as her return kdramas. Whilst I didn't have many high expectations for the drama, it didn't exactly blow me away either.

The story did seem like a new and interesting take to the zombie plots which are often overused in kdramas; the comedy elements mixed with the quirky "escape" routes from zombies were interesting. But the comedy wasn't anything fresh and was more just the childish "poo and pee" jokes that didn't exactly fit with the *extremely* gory scenes later on. The characters reactions to the zombies, whilst being quite realistic, made it seem as though they were in a world that had never seen/heard of a zombie movie before and it was frustrating to see the characters making such illogical decisions (particularly at the rather long and boring military base scenes).
Whilst the flashback scenes were cute, I would have loved to see more chemistry and screentime between the two leads who spent literally 99% of the drama apart.

That being said, the side characters where likable enough and, whilst I think their previous works are much better, the leads were great too. The open-ended finale was a little disappointing as it didn't feel like the powerful ending we'd been expecting for the last 7 episodes but the drama was certainly enjoyable to casually tune into every friday. We love to see a strong female lead 💪

Disappointing Start and Captivating End

I’ll start with the first episodes. The first episode, which introduced us to the plot, wasn’t bad, but for a drama like this, I expected a more dynamic start. The second episode was a disappointment — after the calm first one, we’re suddenly thrown into zombie chaos with a bunch of dumb character decisions. Because of this, I dropped the drama. In my opinion, the creators hit us with this explosive wave too abruptly, and I think many people gave up on it because of that.

But thoughts about Newtopia didn’t let me go, so I decided to come back. Starting from the third episode, I began to enjoy it and got hooked. Between dropping it and returning, I also did some personal work on how I perceive this genre. I think people should broaden their horizons a bit and step away from the standard themes they’re used to.

After the third episode, this drama became my favorite ongoing(!). The mix of dynamics, comedy, tension, overall chaos, and drama was the best here. Even though the drama is short, the characters became special to me, even those who got little screen time — they still managed to leave an impression on me((

I’m not a fan of any of the actors, but I became one for some of them after this drama. Their acting was incredible!! Ji Soo especially stood out to me — I listened to her songs for days after this.

This drama still has more to show, so I’m waiting for the next season 👊

God Bless Good People

The story is about a zombie outbreak where there is lovers that just broke up and now they are searching for each other to make sure both of them is still alive. It's really a comedy K-Drama rather than action since a lot of hilarious scenes happened during their survival. I don't think that this is the end since the story can still be continued. Recommended to watch if you like zombies and comedy K-Drama.

There isa blood scene so make sure you're not afraid of blood/gore.

Newtopia

I just watched the first 2 episodes and I honestly enjoyed them!! I’ve never seen any drama like it before so it was a new experience for me but I loved the story and the production is crazy 🤯🤯 can’t wait for the next episodes!! I was honestly excited because of Jisoo but I like the other actors as well! Honestly this drama has exceeded my expectations 💯
What I also liked about this drama is that the episodes are less than an hour so you can binge watch the episodes and the drama is only 8 episodes so I don’t think there will be any unnecessary scenes

Good comedy-zombie drama

I am not an elite critique when comes to dramas. If I like something, I enjoy, even if is the worse in other peoples' eyes...
To be honest... it is my first time seeing Jisoo acting. Not being biased....I can say she delivered. I liked her raspy voice in it. Now, to pass on what is the most important things. The drama itself. A perfect drama? No. Unique?... You could say that. Zombie and gore effects? Spot on. Regarding the comedy... Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you saw shawn of the dead, odd family: zombie for sale or the Japanese movie zom 100: bucket list of the dead, this drama will be perfect for you.
A bit on the negative side: many you might find at least the first ep boring, but is characters introduction, relationships, bonds between and setting.
Ah, some characters would be missed...
In a way what lacked, I feel... a great OST.

Slow start but ended up being a blast.

Do not let their low rating deceive you, if you give Newtopia a chance you will find a lovely drama of only 8 episodes that combines action, comedy and some seriously sad scenes.

The episodes are short to the point that is very easy to binge-watch, and to be hones I think this drama would benefit from watching the episode back to back more that having to wait a week per episode.

The strong points:
- The cinematography (I sound so posh), no, but listen to me, there are some camera movements that are truly interesting, it plays a lot with verticality (if that's even a word) of the tall buildings in South Korea, and also builds a very oppressive atmosphere by using several settings that are panic inducing (Ventilation conducts, the subway, a mall..). There is some brilliant use of colours too, I need to mention the subway portion of the story because there was some really amazing use of camera and filters here.

-The characters, while you might start being a bit weary of them all, it's amazing how they slowly get you, and how you end up getting very attached to the cast of main characters. The drama separates the adventure Lee Jae Yun (Played brilliantly by Park Jeong Min) and Kang Yeon Ju (Jisoo who is less brilliant that PJM, but I haven't' seen her act as badly as people claim she did). The Lee Jae Yun side of the story is very enjoyable, because there is this little cast of characters from the army, and the hotel that you end up falling in love with. Kang Yeon Ju side of the story delves more into a solo adventure, and yet her side of the story has some highlights, like the subway adventure.

-The beautiful mix of dry humor and crying moments, seriously, I teared up and laughed equally. Nobody is save in this drama, I really thought they were all in danger of dying.

The drama ends up open to the possibility of season 2 but yet at the same time if it doesn't happen the ending works really well as it's own.

Really, a great experience.

Masterpiece ?

Newtopia is a masterpiece that sets a new benchmark for the zombie genre. The direction is nothing short of flawless, with each scene meticulously crafted to build tension and immerse the audience in its haunting yet captivating world. The acting is top-tier, with the cast delivering emotionally charged and nuanced performances that make the characters feel real and relatable. The cinematography is breathtaking, capturing both the eerie desolation and fleeting moments of hope with striking precision. The VFX work is incredibly detailed and seamless, making the zombies and action sequences feel terrifyingly real. Every element—direction, acting, cinematography, and VFX—comes together harmoniously, creating an unforgettable viewing experience. Newtopia isn’t just a show; it’s an artistic triumph.

Newtopia

I need to say that Jisoo is one of my favourite idols, so many people may think I am biased - still it is my first drama with her. So she was my first reason to watch this, second was zombies (yeah, it is weird combination of choices). Well after explaining myself I will go into drama's details, cause I do loved it and in my opinion any lower rating would not be fair - it started with 7/10 but with every next episode (especially since 6 it was becoming higher and darker) - I really had great time and waiting for next week was hard (eventhough I watched other good dramas in the meantime).
Jisoo - in my opinion she played really well, she portrayed perfectly bubble and stressed side of character - especially episode 6 (spoiler - traumatic). Her chemistry was cute with Park Jeong Min (I wished they had more scenes together, so yeah give them season 2!). Also now I need her to act with Lee Hak Joo - yes it can be survival again or maybe spy/criminal - I just need them as a couple! Also his character was perfect, I wished he stayed longer. Spoiler - also the one who turned into zombie but survive so long because of alcohol whose name they did not know (yeah, I also do not know and could not match actor......shame on me) - he was also great, he could play Jisoo's brother in some drama! Sad part - unfortunately team Jisoo did not survive - and it was really great team, they did everything to protect her. Kang Young Seok's character was annyoing but he cared and tried to keep her alive - and did not deserved what happened.
Kim Joon Han - amazing! Hong Seo Hee - great female strong character!!! Team Park Jeong Min was also great, I am really happy that most of tchem stayed alive. To sum up - I just love the cast and the characters.
Episode 6 & 7 - were soo good. Episode 8 - when she was running away from man, it was actually scary, like there was no way to not be stressed if she will survive - I felt like I was watching some scene from The last of us (my favourite game), I was as stressed when Ellie was running from canibal. It was stressful, there was moment where I thought that it will really end the sad way. Also I am curious if Jisoo's character was seeing ghosts or just too much stress and she was imaging things, it seems like that and would make sense actually. The only thing I wished that happened was a kiss!!
Zombies are so well done like it is actually crazy to see them having half of body and still being dangerous. And since it is a zombie series there is need to be a little gore. It also seems that the only way to become a zombie is when they bite you.
Some behaviours were stupid or illogical but they actually made sense - we also would not act rational if suddenly there was zombie's attack.
There are a lot of happy and funny scenes (COMEDY) and a lot of sad, traumatic and dark (episode 6, Alex, guy without name, episode 7) and a lot really a lot of gore (do not eat during watching, and if you are sensitive for this stuff just do not watch) - it is like a mix of Resident evil (game - in terms of bleh) with Zombieland (comedy). In my opinion it was well balanced, cause it was really dark, especially second half. Effects were great, in general visually it is so well made.
Yeah I just loved it!!! Now I need edits with zombie by everglow (my ultimate group, dark parts would fit really well to this song - also #everglowdeservesbetter) and maybe by Purple kiss for comedy parts.
To really sum up - in my opinion it is really great zombie drama, something different than usual, my rating is high but I really like it that much, worth giving a chance especially now when all episodes are out.
