Who would have thought that Ji Bo Zai could be a green flag!

The best thing the screenwriter did while adapting the book to the drama was to take the philanderer out of the Ji Bo Zai. Man for first half of the book, the man couldn't rest unless he was touching a woman and physical intimacy with Ming Yi meant just pleasure to him and nothing more. He did more than makeup for it in the second half and Ming Yi gave him hell. (If anyone wants to know how bad he was, just DM me, I'll tell ya. I'm dying to.)

In contrast to Ji Bo Zai, Ming Yi (Ming Xian) was much more powerful a character than they have shown in the drama. She was honestly a goddess in the book. As much as I like the softer version of Ming Yi in the drama, I still wonder how much more the drama would have shined with Ming Yi's goal for equality.

I am not a fan of the whole netherbeast storyline, they would have done better sticking to the tournament, the fight scenes would have been epic.

What I like the most about this drama is the Ji Bo Zai and Ming Yi's relationship, especially how well he treats her. The only thing that seems a bit weird is that it is taking him so long to figure out Ming Yi's identity. Also, Ming Yi claiming to be Ming Xian's betrothed was a bit funny, never thought they would take that route. I am committed to the drama so I'm going to watch the whole thing because I like this part of the drama.

And Er Shi Qi is so damn adorable. I hope we see him again.

A five-minute conversation away from a masterpiece

Love in the Clouds began with a bang, a grand, sweeping fantasy anchored by Ming Xiang, once the unrivaled warrior of the Six Realms. She’s painted as mighty, undefeated, burdened with destiny; the kind of heroine who carried storms in her palms and refused to bow to fate. Yet the first episode already shows her at a low point, defeated by Ji Bozai after being poisoned. That fall was supposed to set the stage for a fierce redemption arc where she’d reclaim her strength, title, and sense of self. Instead, what followed was a slow erosion of the bold woman I met. The warrior’s drive gave way to infatuation, her goals fading into the background as the story reduced her to a lovesick figure. The “this could’ve been solved with one honest conversation” trope really needs to retire. It’s wild how even in the big year 2025, so many dramas still hinge on a single tragic misunderstanding instead of, you know, a five-minute chat.

What makes it worse is how hollow the central love story becomes. Ji Bozai says he loves her, but every choice he makes screams doubt. After everything she’s done, risking her life repeatedly, protecting him even when it cost her reputation and safety, he still defines her by that one desire: the Golden Millet Dream. That kind of selective belief makes his love feel conditional, almost performative. The love imprint was supposed to symbolize emotional reciprocity, a bond that transcends words. So when only she feels his pain and he can’t sense hers, that’s not just inconsistent writing; it undermines the entire emotional system the show built. Either they’re equals in love or they’re not, and that imbalance was never explained in a way that made sense. All the evidence of her love is right there, yet instead of asking why she wants the elixir, he turns away. And Ming Yi, for all her heart, can’t seem to explain herself because love has become a battlefield where her words no longer matter. And Twenty-Seven’s unnecessary sacrifice? That one stings. He had insight and agency. The writers could’ve used him as a moral bridge to restore understanding, but instead they went for shock value, robbing both Ming Yi and the audience of closure that would’ve made sense.

The early episodes promised a smart, morally gray romance. What I got was another story that confuses suffering for depth. Still, I can’t even be mad at the cast; they bodied that mess. They acted so well that I was genuinely pissed at them instead of the writers. Lu Yu Xiao sold every ounce of Ming Yi’s heartbreak, and Hou Ming Hao played “emotionally stunted man who should’ve just listened” a little too convincingly. Their chemistry was fire, which almost made me forget how ridiculous the script was. And then there’s Situ Ling, the quiet pillar of sanity, steady, kind, unwavering. He sees Ming Yi for who she truly is and stands by her without demanding or doubting. He’s everything the supposed “great love” should have been.

I’m on episode 23 of 36 now, and I’m still hoping for a turnaround, for Ming Xiang to reclaim her fire and remind both Ji Bozai and the audience that love should elevate strength, not erase it.

Gorgeous

This show is seriously great I’m glad I’m able to enjoy a Chinese drama again. First let me just say this is the first time a main lead has shined so much to me, he is seriously just so handsome. Honestly it didn’t have a strong introduction, there was barely any background for the leads just little details. Like for example how strong the female lead was. They barely displayed how far her strength goes, showing her only fighting off some simple enemy in the tournament and that’s all, it isn’t even until the later episodes there’s more to the tournament like fighting off strong beasts in order to advance or die and it’s such a little tossed aside detail as well completely downplaying her. In every single darn social situation where the main lead is the main focus she just stands next to him with her confused look on her face not saying anything, I hate that to the core like HELLLO?! One thing that is new is the display of power in a female (not the fl) but on the princess. Usually a princess is just used for marrying off, basically weak. But here she’s seen as a power (she really doesn’t have much but..) it’s just new! Like I never seen it before and she’s trying to steal our Ji Bozai at one point but yet I still can’t hate her! There better be some display of power of our female lead im tired of her being some timid old weak thing.

BORING

I don't know, but I'll be honest, this is the drama I've been looking forward to this year. Besides the really interesting visuals and the great Reuters scene, but then when I watched it, I... Stopped in the middle of the episode because the storyline was slow and lacked direction. I know the Xian Xia theme is common. But this was boring. Aside from the stunning cgi and good OST, some of the episodes were... Not quite right. The chemistry is good, but I think Lu Yuxiao, the female lead, needs more practice. Her expressions are consistent and complex even when the scene or situation changes.

A pair I will always remember with beautiful chemistry

Where to start? So I initially read the novel and enjoyed it. I had watched the female lead in my journey to you and thought she did a really good job. And well the male lead, I’ve never watched his stuff but heard he’s good. So how could i not watch it! I’m glad I did.

Although some parts were not the same as in the novel I think they’ve done a very good job. I usually find cdramas too long but with the changes they made it really makes every moment memorable in my opinion and I kind of see it as 2 parts in 1. Essentially two big fights. And the lead up to these fights are so different.

I loved all the actors in this one. Obviously some annoyed me like the villains but that means they did a good job so can’t complain! It’d be nice to see them all in a drama together again. I just really enjoyed the friendship of the characters.

In terms of the story, i personally loved it. I know there was a point people were annoyed with the female lead but i get her. I will say though, im glad it didn’t drag on for too long. If she had lied again i think I would’ve doubted how smart she is but she knew she was caught red handed. There was no point in lying again. Second, the reason I loved the novel was because the female lead is a fighter! She’s not a damsel in distress. She can fight for herself and he knows it too. Slay girl. And lastly, I’m happy they trusted each other at the end. Like yes communication. We love to see it.

Situ ling, I wish he had a redemption arc. I really hoped that maybe ming yi’s beating will switch something in his brain but yeah I ask for too much. I did like that we got to see his disciple at the end meet his butterfly form though. Or at least that’s what I thought I saw. Usually these type of dramas make me cry at the end but I was grinning, I was smiling ear to ear. I find that sometimes there’s not enough sweet scenes at the end but they fed us so thank you. And I was also surprised about the fighting. I felt the last battle wasn’t actually that intense. But that’s because my leads communicated. Don’t get me wrong, it still had me on the edge of my bed though.

I was a really big fan of the marriage scenes. I think they really made a statement for me. Like how marriage is really a unique and important decision for each couple. I think they portrayed it beautifully with the crossing of the river and the stone duck statues. Sorry if they weren’t ducks… and the child like voice hosting the scene. I also liked how some of the things ming yi in the novel did became what the new empress did. I liked that they did not make her a regular empress but actually gave her a proper role! Like she actually did stuff and contributed to making the six realms better.

Music wise I thought there would be more songs. But I really liked some of the songs and think they used them very well. The love in the clouds ost is my favourite. It gives such ethereal vibes which works so well. And I also enjoyed the male leads ost for the sweet moments.

Ok, overall 10/10. Would I watch again? Maybe, if I could watch it for the first time again. Storyline? A rollercoaster but the good kind. Visuals? Stunning. Romance? It’s romancing. Music? Chef’s kiss. Production? Thank you for making this. I really enjoyed it, all of it! :)))

Fabulous!

I loved this drama ~ Xanxia is my favourite C-drama genre.
Great production quality, and beautiful to look at in every way, including the cast.

Both leads were excellent, and I am so relieved that I'm seeing less of female lead roles lately, where they behave, and worst still, speak, like 5-year olds!
Definitely not the case in this one. She's feisty, focused, practical, and often very funny.
ML character is stunning, mysterious, accomplished, powerful, feared, equally focused, and with a very sad back story, which has left him somewhat convinced he'll always be let down.

It's an epic tale, with some very moving moments that brought tears to my eyes, and others that had me laughing out loud; a proper roller-coaster of a ride.
It has plenty of humour (not slapstick), but also lots of action, breathtaking moments, and a great love story to boot.
Often with C-dramas, even good ones, with so many episodes, it isn't surprising when the story gets somewhat drawn out at times. With this, however, I never felt that, and the episodes flew by.
I would definitely watch this again, very happily.

One of the best of the year

I really enjoyed this drama. Here's my breakdown:

Pros:
-- It's a great battle of wits between the leads. Both the FL and ML are witty, sharp and keep each other on their toes, making the series tantalizing and binge-worthy.
-- The plot, though laden with many moving parts, is engaging and fairly simple to follow thanks to a single McGuffin that moves the story forward. While predictable in some ways (and honestly, which drama isn't), it also provides good twists and turns that keep you guessing and make for great cliffhangers.
-- The FL actress, Lu Yu Xiao, has this cute, girl-next door beauty. Not movie-star looks but an exquisite aura that explains why men fell hard for her. She plays a character who is also cunning, decisive and one of the best warriors out there but with none of that girl-boss trope that wrecks her femininity. It makes her more natural, balanced and approachable so her emotional scenes carry more weight.
-- The FX are awesome! It definitely made the wuxia magic come to life. Great production value and the rich, lush and wonderfully creative sceneries speak for themselves.
-- The final nemesis has plausible and deep underlying motives. To have a great lead, you need a great antagonist, and the actor, Yu Cheng En, with his naive-boyish looks, was a good fit for the role. His character deals with a mix of resentment, humiliation and obsession that makes him quite interesting and not one dimensional.

Cons:
-- I could do with fewer than 36 episodes. I'd say 26 tops. I fast-forwarded through some scenes with the secondary romantic couple (they weren't that interesting) and some family drama between the nemesis' families which seemed more like filler to me.
-- The acting range of Hou Ming Hao, the ML, is not elite, but to his credit, it was enough to render the character well. After all his story arch was heart wrenching and well layered. It demanded very intense scenes, so his role was no walk in the park.
-- One couple embodies mutual self-sacrifice while, in the end, while another couple alluded that marriage can be a stumbling block to one's career. You can find this dichotomy quite jarring or a plausible decision by the writers to provide different perspectives. So whether this is a pro or a con is in the eye of the beholder.

In the end, there are way more pluses than minuses so give it a go!

Iconic chemistry between LYX and HMH

The chemistry between LYX and HMH is absolutely insane, beautiful, intense, and unforgettable. I love them so much that even now, I still can’t get over it. I need them to pair up again. This isn’t my first HMH drama, I started with FOF, and while his character there was insanely handsome, somehow his aura and visuals are even better here. I don’t know what it is, but LYX has this power to elevate her male leads’ presence. I didn’t feel the same chemistry when watching Glory or TUS.

Both of them absolutely nailed their characters. Their emotions, actions, and inner conflicts were portrayed perfectly, and their crying scenes were especially heartbreaking and sincere. Their scheming personalities matched each other so well. Honestly, the reason I’m giving this drama a 10/10 overall is because of them.

That said, the storyline itself was frustrating. It started off strong, with both leads using each other to achieve their goals, which was interesting. But the constant deception and second lead became exhausting. MY had so many chances to open her heart and tell JBZ that she was actually MX and needed the antidote. I’m sure JBZ would’ve given it to her willingly. However, that’s not the real reason I rated the storyline 7/10. I can still understand MY’s hesitation, she knew JBZ would help her, but she didn’t want him to go against his master’s orders. She didn’t want him to become someone who betrays his master, and from her POV, that makes sense.

The truly frustrating part was SL. He was annoying, obsessive, and honestly unbearable. I wanted to drop the drama so many times, but I stayed purely for LYX and HMH. The number of times I wanted to punch him through the screen is uncountable. This story did not need a third wheel. I genuinely don’t understand why his character existed. His transition from a “lost puppy” to someone evil felt unnecessary and poorly justified. I don’t see a valid reason for him turning evil, was it possessiveness? Obsession? I don’t even know what the screenwriter was trying to do here.

We don’t need a third wheel to amplify the main leads’ relationship. He couldn’t even see FY right in front of him. The number of times I wanted to scream at him to look at FY, poor girl. I couldn’t empathise with him at all. I’ve seen many comments defending SL, but honestly… no. Yes, MY saved him when he was young and became his light but is that love? He grew up believing MX was a guy, and then suddenly he sees MY again and thinks, oh my god, I love her! That was just weird. What he felt wasn’t love, it was gratitude mixed with obsession. He wanted to repay her and believed that saving her would make her look at him. That’s not how love works. And even if that logic did work, then isn’t FY doing the same thing?

That said, YCE did portray SL very well, it’s just a shame the character itself was so badly written.

On a lighter note, the princess and YX storyline was adorable. I love them so much. The princess’s growth was genuinely touching. If the drama had focused less on SL’s obsession and more on the princess’s journey, it would have been so much better.
