✝ Oh HAIL No ✝ °4.5° °repugnant°

What the H£!!?

The 1-sentence review: The door opened and the light blinded her, the sign warned in red fiery letters: “ALL WHO ENTER HERE ABANDON ALL HOPE,” and that is the warning the potential viewer should be cautioned by.

TJFH is not remotely good.

Kang Bitna died a while back. Justitia (Goddess of Justice, though she calls herself a demon, is played by Oh Na Ra from My Mister-9.5 & Racket Boys-8.3), she screwed up that day. Even though Bitna wasn't on the docket, even though she insisted she never killed anyone, the judge had seen and heard all of /that/ before. Only murderers make it to her courtroom, so she sentenced this murderer. Then Bael, her boss, showed up and gave her a punishment for convicting an innocent woman. She must live on earth as that woman and send 10 unrepentant murderers to Hell. Bitna.2.0 (Park Shin Hye from Flower Boy Next Door-7, The Heirs-7.3, Memories of the Alhambra-7) is Justitia in Bitna's body. She's not great with kids. She does recycle, though. Bitna was a judge, so she will see some murderers. She has 1 yr. Finding 10 murderers to clear out in 12 mos won't be easy. Fortunately, there's a loophole: 1 murderer who has killed 10 people would count as 10, just as any other combo of murderers, whose the victims add up to at least 10, would. She realizes it would be great to locate some double-dippers.

TJFH is a 2024 release that is 1 season consisting of 14 70-minute episodes. It is rated 92 on AWiki, 8.6 on MDL and 7.8 on IMDb. I simply find that hard to comprehend. Forget the fact that the plot is sloppy and the romance is utterly unconvincing (in episode 11 they do have a very cute date), TJFH is loaded with gore, blood, violence - extreme violence against women and children - and it makes light of all kinds of spiritual issues that should be taken more seriously. From a technical standpoint it's better than mediocre, but not great. From an EQ-POV it's rancid. I hated this show. Just loathed it. The more I see of the Hulu K-catalog the more they seem to line up with some of the crazy rumors about them. Hulu's Korean lineup is loaded with gore, violence, bad language, and more causal sex than usual. They're trying to turn Kcountry into Hollyweird, and my eyes expatriated to east Asia to get away from that rot. Many of the Hulu shows are good, but not all of them. TJFH is not a good show. Oh HAIL no. Even the great Park Shin Hye can't resurrect this corpse.

Ms Park played the shy and tortured type early on in her career. She's amazing as an eye-rolling kick@$$ in Sisyphus-8 and this is yet a new look for her. She's confident, ruthless, decisive, and rather diabolical. Her drinks come in macabre red and black cans; when she pops them open we can almost hear: “I'm evil,” instead of the scrape of metal and the popping release of CO2.

Kim Jae Young was in 2 shows that I love enough to have already rewatched: My Secret Romance-7 & Black-9. Here, he's Han “Da” On, a cop on trial for using excessive force. This actor always looks slightly sad even when he smiles. He's self-represented. Afterall, he's innocent, so why should he use a lawyer? Even with a fool for a lawyer, Bitna acquits him. He introduces himself to her outside and thanks her, which she deflects. He hands his card to her and tells her to contact him If she ever needs assistance. She deflects that, too, telling him she'll remember his information.

In TV style, she'll need to call him mere hours later. She's been arrested! The police believe she's delusional. The unfavorable psych evaluation that dropped out of her purse might have had something to do with it. “I don't know about demons, but I'm certain God doesn't exist,” Da says to her later on. She makes sure to inform him that humans are the ones that cause the current mess that we're in. Demon or not, Da thinks she's an impeccable judge. He doesn't want to see her step down. They realize they actually have a common case together and the trial starts tomorrow.

She shocks him the next day. She lets a serial, deranged wife-beater off with a small fine. Da is incredulous. The victim is in serious danger of being murdered by this perp.

Her POA to accomplish her mission is short-sighted, but she doesn't need it to work, longterm. She needs a year. It's a mad dash to the finish line. Her strategy is to give these heinous criminals light (or no) sentences so that she can murder them when they're released. They torture people in this show. Sure, some have it coming, however, it's too much. The death penalty is one thing; torture is another.

The other perpetrators of this debacle are Kim In Kwon as Valak, Bitna's assistant; Kim Ah Young as Gremory, Bitna's other assistant; andvLee Joong Ok & Ha Kyung Min on cleanup crew. Kim Jae Hwa is the local Christian, Jung Myeong Suk. She's always inviting the judge to church regardless of the daggers the judge shoots from her eyes whenever Ms Jung is around. (The judge's assistant does decide to take a look at belief from the other end of the spectrum). We learn that Ms Lee's son was murdered a couple decades back. She almost seems demon possessed at the funeral, which we see in flashback. Ms Kim has credits dating back to 2010. She's been in alot of features including Cleaning Up, Ssanahui Sunjeong, & The Tale of Lady Ok.

Kim Young Ok (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha-8.2, Dear My Friends) plays O Mi Ja, a Hwangcheon villa resident and busybody. This actress is so cute. Her earliest credited work is from 1957. She's almost 90 and she looks like she's in her 70s. She and Park Shin Hye square off and it's glorious. Toward the end of the show she seems like she's slightly uncomfortable with her hokey lines. Yang Kyung Won from Crash Landing on You-9.1 makes an appearance as a multiple personality (DID) sufferer in eps5&6. He's unbelievable. His performance is incredible. He plays so many different roles. In Big Mouth-7.4 he's the semi-psycho in a crime family that poses as a legit one, and I'm currently watching him in Vincenzo where he is a pawn shop owner who likes to act tough. I didn't recognize him in any of these parts until I looked him up. He presents that differently each time. Oh Eui Shik makes a guest appearance. I've been a fan since Oh My Ghost-10. Everything he's in is good. The director is Park Jin Pyo of Brave Citizen, and the screenwriter, Cho I Su, is just starting out.

“If you stay near that woman you'll both die,” old lady Mi Ja warns. In the meanwhile, another demon is killed for falling in love with a human. The demons have a law enforcement agency devoted to tracking down such criminals. Bitna's totally sus, so Da is investigating her while he acts like he's helping her, while he acts to himself like he's not falling for her. Falling for him never occurs to her until it's too late. She's mystified by her rapid heartbeats and stray tears. Tensions are building.

“I realize now what it is that I have to do. To be exact, it's attaining success and wealth through marriage. I want to go into politics. I'm a great liar, shameless, selfish, hypocritical, and I like money. I think what I have what it takes to be a great politician.” So says one straightforward but ambitious character. Well, firstly, one can see how unimaginative the dialogue is, but hmmm… Maybe it's not a work of fiction🤔. I'm on board with 50% of the premise: Judges who give out light sentences to criminals who, beyond any reasonable doubt deserve more, are doing Hell's bidding.

The whole making light of demons, Hell, Satan, blood, guts, and gore didn't bother me much when I was young, but it just does now. I'm not in that cool club anymore. The world is too messed up. Crime that's been documented to have been committed by devil worshippers is horrific and the rumors of what's going on is ultra horrifying. The softening of public opinion is part of what's alleged to be their playbook. So are the makers of TJFH playing with us or playing us? I can't tell.

From the start, many things about this are uncomfortable. Supposedly, a demon is our protagonist. She's also a “goddess” but definitely from the wrong side of the divide. I hate the moral confusion of elevating bad guys like mobsters, demons, and the devil. That's just what they would want - for us to lower our resolve against evil. All of the imagery is off, too. The end of ep1 is horrific. Bitna focuses on her goal and utilizes horrific means to get it. She's already said she has no empathy for the victims. We will see where this strategy takes her: To an overabundance of violence and blood. There's long and protracted violent imagery. They juxtaposed it with lighthearted words and quirky elements, so the horrific scenes are not given proper gravity. The show's tone is just off.

The show also wanders around without structure or rules while they make light of faith, spirituality, God, Satan and angels. Perhaps what's worse is that it's a mess. It's sloppy, directionless, and incoherent. The disconnect between the show's quality and its score is so profound I wonder if Hulu is using bots.

The opening scene graphics are excellent, from the roses of blood to the inverted cross of light to the bronze statuary come to life screaming and squirming However, Hell’s courtroom isn't really ominous (it looks like the haunted playhouse) and the demon, Bael, is overdone. The filming is loaded up with upended crossees, Bael, Satan, Lucifer, walnuts, baby head sized melons getting chopped, demons, blood, gore, violence against women and children, underground passageways, subterranean lairs, and naturally, the wacko Christian - one of the worst offenders claimed to be a Christian but he gets sent to hell, while the main song lyrics croon “Please don't pray anymore “ Yet, God is said to be the master of all, in the end. Bitna says God gave them their authority. Fascinating.

my style of drama

i love this!!!! give me 10 more!!!!

this is how u make a show about demons (all shade to my demon). she was truly demonic and did demonic deeds. the premise was also good. it was very satisfactory to see the criminals get punished. the gore was good too. sometimes the violence was too graphic but still it was good.
THE ROMANCE. this is what i want from dramas. the way do-an is slightly interested in her in the beginning then he hates her, to following her to expose her and in turn actually liking her and understanding her. bit-na becoming his source of comfort and her becoming so WEAK for him. perfect. the angst? amazing. wish we could have had more but still im happy.
park shin-hye absolutely rocked this role. her expressions and fits were amazing. 10/10 performance.
i don't know if a season 2 would work well though. one of the main reasons this was fun was because there were 2 chases happening, bit-na with the criminals and do-an trying to prove its bit-na whose doing it. it wouldn't be fun now that do-an will have to protect her instead of arresting her

The actress (Park Shin Hye) playing the female lead in this show is truly remarkable and brings a unique quality to her performance that stands out from what we typically see in most K-dramas. The series itself feels refreshing, offering something different compared to the usual trends in Korean dramas today. A lot of credit goes to the female lead, as her outstanding acting seems to carry the entire show. It's clear that her talent is elevating the overall experience, making it a standout in the current K-drama landscape. Great job to her for bringing such depth and uniqueness to the role!

Drama comedy horror 8.5

An addicting drama not going to lie

I really enjoyed this drama most especially Park Shinhye and her wonderful acting. I would love a s 2nd seasons. I watched for Park Shinhye and stayed for Kim Jaeyoung. I've never seen him in a drama before but I will be on the lookout for his new projects and watching his older ones.
The story does take a turn towards the end that seem a bit unsatisfying, but the drama is still a good one. Oh and holy crap LeeKyuhan's acting had me screaming. He really does play his role perfectly. I would say definitely watch this one.

???

This is the best mystery, comedy, little love and thriller drama of the year till November beacuse of well played drama of judge kang bitna.
In reality, the judge of hell is very harsh and cruel, but if he finds someone to love him, he too becomes as delicate as a butterfly's wings and this is really happened between kang bitna and Han daon.

That's it

Beautifully written storyline!!

I loved the storyline honestly, alot of people said some things were pathetic but that is their opinion. I love the fact that even after Kang Bin na started to feel more human-like they did not falter her judgements towards the criminals. And ofcourse she is a demon, her main task was to kill the sinners, no matter how.

The chemistry between Bin na and Daon however did feel slightly forced, they looked cute together. It was perfect when they were secretly falling for eachother but in the last episode it felt a bit forced and awkward.

However both the actors gave their best. Executed their roles perfectly and no one else would have fit better than them!!

Fierce and complicated characters

This story was incredible. The two leads did a great job and played very complicated characters who were interesting to learn about. This drama was full of action and tension and satisfying revenge and I loved it! It dragged a tiny bit towards the middle for me, but then picked up the pace and I completely forgot it ever dragged because I couldn't get enough! This drama was well written and well executed and I highly recommend it if you like intense stories with layers and not just your typical romance!

Another hit starring Park Shin Hye.

"A demon whose mission is to kill evil people who lead other people to their deaths and don't reflect on their actions". There are some dramas that you know are going to be a hit the moment you read the synopsis, and this was one of them. Park Shin Hye being the lead was a cherry on top.

The plot of the drama was truly outstanding. It's very common to see a devil go out of character as the story develops but the writers made Justitia stay true to her character till the end. The character development throughout the drama was very consistent and satisfying. There was no rush in the episodes and everything was brought together really well. The scenes where she punishes the perpetrator were so satisfying to watch!! They each got exactly what they deserved! Seeing how they were punished exactly the way they treated the victims gives the viewers a different kind of satisfaction.

The cast did a great job bringing their characters to life. Park Shin Hye as always surpassed my expectations. Seeing her in her girl-boss era really shows her versatility. She always did justice to her roles but she outshined herself with the role of Justitia. The rest of the cast also did amazing with each of their roles.

The only downside I can think of for this drama is the romance aspect of it. At first it was kind of fun seeing how Justitia found Han Da On fun to play around with but turning it into a romance was not actually necessary, in my opinion. The story could have panned out well even without the romance between the two main characters. Their chemistry as the police officer and demon was top-notch but as lovers, it didn't really stand out.

Overall the drama was one of the best dramas to air in 2024. I would recommend it as on of the must-watch dramas of this year. If you are looking for a fantasy, revenge drama to satisfy your demon side, I would recommend watching this!

Must watch

I really enjoyed this one.

Good storytelling and great acting. Park Shin Hye shined. It’s too bad that she was typecast in “pity me, look i cry pretty” roles early in her career. But she definitely showed her doubters in this series that she’s one of the best actresses in the industry.

Is there such a thing as a Christian Horror? Refreshing Old Tropes

Horror is a genre frequently described as meant to "hurt its audience"; it's supposed to evoke "negative" feelings such as disgust, dread, fright, squeamishness. To that end, authors use a particular set of tools to evoke particular sets of feelings, and since there are so many horrors, nothing new ever really happens.

There are three main things to like about this show. The refreshing of Old Tropes common to these kinds of stories. Combining tropes that normally not put together for this kind of show to give it a feel of creativity and newness. The use of skilled and experienced actors to give life to old material.

So, what you get here is a crime serial that combines tropes from several other genres to give the show a fresh feel. To say more is to spoil some of the twists the authors placed within the story. By placing these tropes within a crime serial and connecting it to cosmic justice made it enjoyable, even when some events are predictable. Since there are still surprises, and twists and turns to take us to the climax. The predictability did not make it boring. It was smart of the author, "even if we know where all this must end, what interesting and surprising ways can we get there. The twist is in the journey rather than the outcome. We are working with Character twists and character journey twists rather than plot twists.

We have interesting and likable and loathsome characters. We have a plain, common setting. We have a serial plot with lots of room to grow and the possibility of expansion. So, on technical merits it scores high. Good Characters. Mid Setting. Good Plot. Mild Gore. Good Music. Great Actors, and at times mind blowing acting. So how do we deal with a "plain, common, setting."? The author extends it. Indicating some mysteries beyond our typical Korean city, hiding beneath the surface. I truly wish the author, and actors might have been afforded more time to flesh out the world more and explore more intricate story and plot arcs. It would have done wonders to make the setting more interesting. The other experienced and skilled actors might have also gotten time to show their skills more.

There is another merit to this work the person watching for entertainment might not consider. The show is great. Watch it. The best production of 2024. The Plot, Setting and Characters together are interesting, even though separately mid. That is my review as a piece of entertaining K-Drama.

The real meat of the show is in the philosophy of the work, the thinkers and ideas I think were adopted for the inspiration of the story; and the themes explored. Divine Providence, Cosmic Justice and Legal Justice. If we take C.S. Lewis (Screwtape Letters, till we have faces) Dostoevsky (The Demons) and the Bible as launching pad. This work is an excellent piece of death education, philosophical theodicy to the problem of justice and interesting challenge to moral nihilism and how legal justice is powerless in the face of it all. There are things seemingly played for laughs or to show the quirkiness of the characters that turn out to be significant. What is it that can change "Dostoevsky style demons"? Can it be related to the silence of God? What is hell like to the soul given to depravity?

The first watch, it's a fun serial, with laughs and tears. The second watch is more serious. A Christian horror tackling the silence of God and Cosmic justice. So, watch it, and if you get a chance afterwards; read "the Screwtape letters", "Till We have Faces" and if you can stomach it add "The Demons". Then watch it again.

If you really have time, and love reading (all by C.S. Lewis), you can throw in
The Weight of Glory
The Great Divorce
The Problem of Pain
Miracles
The Final Battle (The last book of the Chronicles of Narnia)
The Abolition of Man

To further the appreciate the philosophical and theological depths of this drama. I might even be inspired to give a spoiler review for those who might want to watch it a second time and look out for interesting stuff.
