Pulls you in and keeps you in
I don’t have a problem with the brother/sister issue because there is none. They are not blood relatives. What woman would not want the man in her life to let her lead him and be spoiled by him? Loved the racing part of the drama when MuMu learned to drift and make the heart shape. Both main actors can cry so believably at the right scene. And he said he would beat up the bastard who treated MuMu badly so would that not mean he would have to beat himself up if he let her stay with him post car accident when he was crippled and can not even walk? Wished the wedding scene was more fun than them eloping as all their friends are hung over from the night before. Was this review helpful to you?

ML is hot in the garage! Great performance!
This show mistakes obsession for romance. Jiang Mu exists only to orbit Jin Zhao, erasing herself while he “lives” by accomplishing her dreams — yet he isn’t truly living either, since he’s chasing a life not his own. Six years pass, bad things happen, but neither grows; the show glorifies silence, waiting, and avoidance as love. Jin Zhao ghosts, hides injuries, and faces no consequences, while Jiang Mu’s devotion is romanticised despite her stagnation.Esther’s baby-voice and expressionless performance turns what should be vulnerability into a caricature, making emotional immaturity unbearable. She hasn’t fully developed the nuances that distinguish a good actor from a great one, understandable given her experience.
The screenwriter leans on tired c-drama tropes — noble sacrifice, prolonged separation, silent suffering — and calls it depth. By the end, the “romance” is just two people stuck in each other’s dreams, never truly living, never truly growing. It’s arrested development with a soundtrack.

The ML's Controlled Hunger Is the Plot
<< Male Lead >>Let’s start with the ML, because wow... he absolutely blew my expectations through the roof.
He was a complete nobody in my eyes before this. Not a heartthrob at first glance. Not the second. Not even after several glances. But the moment he starts moving in this role, everything shifts to a whole new level. My gosh, he’s genuinely thirsty. You can feel his hunger. And yet, what makes it so compelling is how tightly he controls it.
I couldn’t help comparing him to the ML in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love. That character was supposed to be calm, restrained and self-disciplined, yet he felt perpetually “in heat” whenever the FL appeared. Honestly, that ML should come take lessons in what real self-restraint looks like from this one.
Here, the thirst is everywhere... in his eyes, his presence, his body language, but there’s always restraint. He carries himself with a casual chill, yet you can sense a quiet self-control in the air he breathes. He’s absolutely perfect for this role.
---------------------------------------
<< Female Lead >>
As for the FL… I’ll be honest that I’ve never been especially fond of her. Ever since Youth With You Season 2, I’ve struggled to tolerate her deliberately cutesy voice. I was genuinely surprised by how popular she became after the show, landing FL roles one after another.
She still comes across as a bit pretentious to me, but I have to admit I was impressed by her in A Romance of the Little Forest and in this show as well. (In A Romance of the Little Forest, the chemistry was there, but the story wasn't. It isn't wort watching unless you skip straight to the leads' scenes.)
---------------------------------------
<< Acting >>
I honestly can’t say who acts better. While I don’t find the FL’s character particularly convincing as someone a man would fall head over heels for, the ML completely sells it. He makes me believe, without question, that he is utterly gone for her.
---------------------------------------
<< Story >>
Now, outside of the leads’ chemistry (the credit goes to ML:FL at about 65:35) and the steamy love scenes, there really isn’t much story to talk about.
I skipped a lot. Mostly fast-forwarded straight to the scenes with the two leads together. And I didn’t miss anything essential to understanding the plot.
This is very much a drama worth rewatching for that light-headed, dizzy feeling the love scenes give you, not for the story itself.
---------------------------------------
<< Setting >>
The setting is Thailand, and the rivers, local communities and cultural scenery are visually appealing. But the overall vibe feels nostalgic. Some people might love that atmosphere. I didn’t. It feels old, not in a classic way, but in a low-maintenance, slightly dated kind of way.
---------------------------------------
In short: come for the ML’s controlled hunger and electric chemistry. Stay for the rewatchable moments. Don’t expect a story that sticks.

Promotes incest and grooming
Sorry, everyone loves their dynamic but Esther’s character acts and behaves like a child. Her brother is an adult and enjoys her infantile behaviour. It is truly awful and I do not understand how people are obsessed with their “chemistry”. Why do we have to promote this type of attitude. It’s not ok even if the actress is 30, she’s playing to someone who sexualises children. Just revolting. Was this review helpful to you?

The weird trope and clichés aren't for me...
Jiang Mu and Jin Zhao, who is an adopted son, were raised as siblings until their parents got a divorce when Mu was 10 and Zhao in his early to mid teenage years. This background alone was enough for me to raise my eyebrows but I still gave it a chance since they were technically separated until Mu was 20, but still, it was weird. Jin Zhao basically raised her too since he's been taking care of her since she was a baby, and it was just weird to me that they made it seem like he's been yearning for her ever since they got separated when they were younger, like, a teenager liking a 10 year-old just doesn't seem right to me. The difference with how they treat each other after they were reunited was kind of crazy to me, bc it seemed like they weren't "siblings" at one point, they already had some sexual tension going on, again, weird.I decided to just turn off my brain and ignore the part that has been bothering me so I kept watching. Everything was fine and they were actually cute and sexy when they started dating until... the accident and the breakup, things became messy after that. Like okay, I get why Jin Zhao had to send Mu away bc he wasn't sure if he could still stand up or walk so he didn't want to hold her back. But it only took him like 6 months or a year to walk normally again, I don't get why he cut off all contact with her, and everyone else basically covered up for him, which is such a crappy and selfish thing to do bc Mu was hurting for 6 years missing him. If she didn't go back to China and found his coffee shop by coincidence, then she would've continued living without knowing anything. I also hated how his friend, Sanlai, lied that her dog went missing and she was so heartbroken about it bc she wanted to bring it with her overseas 'cause she can't be by Zhao's side, but no he didn't tell her that the dog was with Zhao and just let her cry about it, Jin Zhao basically stole her dog and even renamed it. There was also the coffee shop which seemed sweet at first, but if you think about it, he established it all by himself and just gave it to her like a piece of candy, when all she wanted was to put up a shop TOGETHER.
The lack of self-respect that Jiang Mu had made me go crazy, bc she basically had to beg Jin Zhao to let her stay by his side even though she did nothing wrong because she was left out of the loop and everyone lied to her for years. I hated Jin Zhao's reason that he didn't want to hold her back, he didn't want to make her suffer blah blah, like dude, she still suffered anyway, for 6 years bc she wanted YOU, she wanted to be by YOUR SIDE all this time. He didn't even apologize enough for hiding and lying from her and making everyone else lie for him, she forgave him too easily and was desperate to get back together with him even though he's pushed her away so many times, that's just foolishness disguised as love. She also forgave the friends too easily like nothing happened.
I thought the main conflict of this drama would be the mom being against them bc they were like siblings, but no, the problem was solved in just one episode and Jin Zhao didn't even get to talk much, he just cut off the plant for her and then ta-dah it's all okay now.
Whatever, maybe I'm just not the target audience for this drama, maybe I just don't see the world through rose-colored lens.

IN DARKNESS, THERE'S ALWAYS A LIGHT TO GUIDE YOU OUT.
'SPEED AND LOVE' is a rare C- drama that feels more like a movie than a series. The chemistry between Esther Yu and He Yu is absolutely fire; they perfectly capture that 'long-lost soulmate' tension, and their 'stare-downs' and quiet moments feel very high-stakes. Esther Yu shows so much growth here in a more mature role, and He Yu is definitely a new favorite as his portrayal of Jin Zhao is raw and protective. The soundtrack and cinematography are top-tier, making even the quiet moments feel intense. The Thailand episodes are stunning. It has a gritty, cinematic film look rather than a typical bright TV soap vibe. The main leads transition from impulsive teenagers to stable adults, making their final reunion feel earned. Also, the FL is the one chasing and saving the ML, which is a refreshing change in pace. The racing and underground boxing scenes are well-choreographed and add great intensity.
However, at first, I didn't want to watch it because of the forbidden romance tag or the 'pseudo-sibling' set-up, but eventually I forced myself to watch it, which was really worth it. Also, there are moments where the characters break up 'for others' own good'(Noble Idiocy), which was frustrating for me, who prefers direct communication.
Lastly, I recommend it if you love stories about healing, second chances, and forbidden tropes done with actual depth.(✿◡‿◡)

Sorry but good riddance
Maybe my review is overly harsh, but I was looking forward to this drama only to be super disappointed. Great acting, chemistry, aesthetic cinematography, and some angst/cute moments here and there but overall the writing and characters sucked.Mumu is among the top, if not the top, of my list of most useless female leads. I’m not a fan of super cutesy types, but I tried to give the benefit of the doubt. But all she did was be cute. After going to Thailand to find her “brother” without any warning, I feel like she was just someone who was constantly spoiled and accommodated for. Her dad’s second wife and daughter were so kind to her, but I barely saw any moments where she would get close to them. They were all just coexisting but so close/courteous, it felt like a very convenient plot hole to skip over.
Everything else was ML taking care of her, doting on her despite his own worries, but also never telling her. She took a foundation language course, learned how to drive, but is all of a sudden super talented with drifting with just her dad’s verbal knowledge and one class to draw a heart. How she managed to survive and fund her cute clothes and everything else without a job (unless we count others conveniently paying or caring for her) I have no idea.
Everything else was cringey. I skimmed so much of the cliche plots, with the bad boy fighting and racing. The drama really dragged. They had finally started dating around ep 15, then we find more details on why ML is still doing dangerous activities despite not needing the money anymore. The communication was so one-sided or indirect, everything being hidden to “protect” her or “for her own good” was also annoying and dragged the conflict on even more. The mixed signals, lies, and push and pull were also annoying.
The FL was only less naive, useless, and cutesty post break up, but it was disappointing to see how a breakup and separation would really lead to her growing up. It was really all the little things in this drama. It totally makes sense for JZ’s doc to breaks patient confidentiality (unless that’s different in China) to tell her about his condition and give her his medical records. He wasn’t going to tell her about his pain otherwise. Again with the communication. Also it totally makes sense for her to help with his rehab.
15 ep to date, 5 ep of whatever they did dating and racecar and investigation bs, and the rest are post breakup/reunion/reconciliation bs. “Proper” communication probably happened around ep 25. The last few ep’s were more enjoyable. Then they added Wan Qing there (which didn’t make sense to me since it never showed what happened to her after the race and her dad’s toxic business). The pacing felt really slow then fast and all over the place. There’s still some loose ends and unanswered q’s… at least it’s a happy ending

More dysfunctional nonsense
ML tells her “If you decide to be with me , you don’t get to change your mind”, gives her a symbol of great love and then abandons her because life gets hard. It was a lie. FL character has zero self-respect. She just pines for bro who lied to her nd pretended to never want to leave her, then she starts trying to go free him, again. This isn’t romantic, it’s not romantic to let yourself be lied to and uncared for. It’s just more drivel about how women should tolerate anything and not love themselves. Was this review helpful to you?
The Best of the Best ever watched
This drama made me log in to my Drama List and comment in the comment section for the first time ever. I have seen all sorts of dramas from Pakistani, Indian, Turkish, Thai, Korean and Chinese. This year Chinese dramas have made me too addictive starting from First Frost in the first half, Prisoner of Beauty in the middle and now Speed and Love in the last.I will truly say I didn’t even expect some ML will truly top Sang Yan for me but now I think Jin Zhao did. Sorry Sang Yan but you will remain my Green Forest forever.
I don’t have much to say about the drama itself. Just wanted to express my feelings to explain how this drama made feel.
I found everything perfect Esther and He yu’s acting, both arcs and I fell for He yu too for the first time ever.
Just my last wish please I want to see all the deleted scenes and wedding scenes so bad. May my wish come true.

A Show for people who like sweet filler
Speed and Love Started with a very exciting premise but the story really diverges. After a couple of episodes the plot starts getting dragged to the side in favor of the cute moments between the leads.- For people who want a solid engaging plot, this is not for you
- For people who want romance, tension, and eye candy this is for
-Next, the acting, He Yu did really well, and esther did well portraying jiang mu but here and there her acting was lacking. I am not trying to hate, criticism ≠ hate, i still like esther. In a couple of scenes esther was showing the emotion on her face rather than feeling it, it was obvious she was acting. What i mean is that if she was sad, she showed a sad face with no depth, that was hard for me to watch after seeing many really good actresses.
- After all this is an idol drama, so it is meant to have eye candy and no strong plot substance

Got me so OBSESSED!!
I've never been this obsessed with a Chinese drama this much. First of all the chemistry is the best part of the drama. Their acting was so natural when it's come to skin ship and those yearning looks. Both EstherYu and Heyu looks incredible and the acting was also good. It's been a long time since a drama made me feel butterflies in my stomach from episode to episode. The plot is actually good it does give Wattpad vibes but that's actually what I like the most. I do love some brain crushing marvelous plots but what my inner little girl yearns is this kind of dramas.
The colors and the sceneries are fantastic. Such a please and easy for the eyes tbh. Something warm and cool at the same time.
it's such a shame this is just a 29 episode drama. Wished there was more episodes because it went too fast that it feels empty after all those emotions they put me through. I'll name this as the best heart fluttering drama for me after many years.

Between Asphalt and Stars: The Enduring Power of Speed and Love
The landscape of modern television drama is often saturated with fleeting romances and predictable tropes, but occasionally, a series emerges that defies convention to offer a profound meditation on resilience, identity, and the indomitable nature of the human spirit. Speed and Love, adapted from the poignant web novel Shuang Gui (Double Track) by Shi Jiu Yuan, is one such masterpiece. Achieving a rare 10/10 rating, this drama is not merely a story about racing or romance; it is a sprawling, emotional epic that explores the delicate threads connecting two souls across different worlds and decades.A Masterclass in Character Evolution: Jiang Mu and Jin Zhao
The heart of Speed and Love beats within the complex relationship between Jiang Mu and Jin Zhao. What makes this drama exceptionally compelling is the stark contrast in their character arcs and how they eventually converge.
Jiang Mu begins as a character we think we know the sheltered, pampered younger sister. However, the narrative masterfully deconstructs this archetype. Her decision to fly to Thailand alone to find her adopted brother is the first indication of her hidden steel. Watching her navigate a world of grit, street racing, and boxing environments that are the antithesis of her upbringing is incredibly rewarding. Mu’s strength lies in her empathy. She doesn’t just observe Jin Zhao’s dangerous life; she assimilates into it. Her role as his "navigator" is the perfect metaphor for their relationship: she provides the direction and the moral compass for a man who has lost his way in the "quagmire" of a hard life.
Jin Zhao, portrayed with a rugged, haunting intensity, is perhaps one of the most well realized male leads in recent years. The transition from the "elegant boy" of Mu’s childhood to a man hardened by the streets of Thailand is heartbreaking yet mesmerizing. His life is one of survival, defined by the "speed" of racing and the violence of the ring. Yet, underneath the scars and the cynicism is a man who is profoundly lonely. The "adoption" reveal adds a layer of tragic complexity to his bond with Mu they are bound by history and family, yet separated by the reality of their different paths.
The Symbolic Power of "Speed" and "Love"
The title itself serves as a dualism for the characters' lives. "Speed" represents Jin Zhao’s world the adrenaline, the danger, and the desperate need to outrun his past and his circumstances. "Love," specifically the empathetic and persistent love of Jiang Mu, acts as the grounding force.
The racing sequences are not just for spectacle; they are visceral representations of Jin Zhao’s internal chaos. When Mu becomes his co pilot, the drama shifts from a story of individual survival to one of partnership. The synchronization required in the cockpit mirrors their emotional synchronization. She isn’t just telling him which way to turn on the track; she is telling him that there is a way out of the darkness.
Deep Dive and Spoilers: The Weight of Sacrifice
[Spoiler Warning: The following section discusses pivotal plot developments]
The emotional core of the series is anchored by the mid-series "accident" that separates them once again. This is where the drama truly earns its 10/10 rating. Most shows would use a separation as a mere plot device, but here, it serves as a crucible for Jiang Mu’s character. Taking on the responsibility of the family and pursuing their shared aerospace dream in Zhao’s absence shows a level of maturity rarely seen in "sister" roles.
The aerospace dream is a beautiful narrative thread. It represents the ultimate "upward" escape from the dirt of the boxing ring and the asphalt of the racetrack to the infinite possibilities of the stars. When they finally reunite years later in Nanjing, they are no longer the children who were separated by divorce, nor the desperate youths in Thailand. They are adults who have been forged by fire.
The reunion in Nanjing is handled with exquisite restraint. The chemistry between the leads has evolved from a frantic, protective bond into a deep, settled soul connection. Seeing them fulfill that aerospace dream together is not just a "happy ending"; it feels like a hard won victory over a fate that tried repeatedly to pull them apart.
Visual Storytelling and Atmospheric Contrast
The production value of Speed and Love deserves significant praise. The cinematography expertly distinguishes between the two primary settings. The Thailand segments are shot with a raw, warm, and often kinetic energy that captures the "wild thrills" of Jin Zhao’s life. The streets feel alive, dusty, and dangerous.
In contrast, the later segments in China, particularly Nanjing, carry a cooler, more structured, and professional aesthetic that aligns with their growth and their focus on aerospace engineering. This visual transition helps the audience feel the passage of time and the shift in the characters' priorities without the need for excessive exposition.
Why This Drama is a 10/10
The reason Speed and Love stands out is its refusal to take the easy way out. It tackles the complexities of an "adopted sibling" relationship with grace, focusing on the soul bond rather than the taboo. It treats Jiang Mu’s intelligence and "splendid" studies as equal in importance to Jin Zhao’s physical prowess.
The drama asks the question: Can you ever truly go home again? The answer it provides is nuanced. You can’t go back to the way things were, but you can build something new and even more beautiful from the ruins of the past.
For viewers who appreciate a story that balances high stakes action with quiet, character driven moments, this series is a revelation. It is a story of how love not just romantic, but the love that encompasses loyalty and shared dreams can act as a navigator through the most treacherous terrains of life.
Final Thoughts
Speed and Love is a rare gem that honors its source material while elevating it through stunning performances and thoughtful direction. It is a journey of two people who were never meant to cross paths again but who fought against the "double tracks" of destiny to find their way back to one another. Whether you are a fan of the original novel Shuang Gui or a newcomer to the story, this drama will leave an indelible mark on your heart. It is a professional, polished, and profoundly moving piece of television that proves that no matter how fast you run, love is the only thing that can truly bring you home.
