What are we doing here?

I'm having real trouble sticking with this series. It has high ratings, and I've seen people gush about it, but I'm 3 episodes in now and still don't really see the point. There is a copycat killer that the cops have apparently no hope of catching, so they make a deal to talk to the original killer from 20 years ago. But what help is she? She has no information on this new killer, she already confessed to all of her crimes, so the police have all the relevant info on who/when/how she killed. She's not some brilliant psychiatrist or profiler like Hannibal Lector. She's JUST a killer that a new killer is copying. Talking to her has done nothing except have the cop son repeat over and over that she's a criminal and he doesn't want to talk to her. Nothing is happening in terms of any characters' relationships. Nothing is really progressing in terms of the investigation. We don't know anything about any of our leads besides "cop" or "criminal." Now we finally get SOMETHING in the ML realizing mom must have killed dad, but this doesn't seem to change literally anything. He doesn't care about the motivation behind it. He still hates her for being a killer. She hasn't changed her mind or attitude about any of it. And the copycat kill is already done. There's no point to her involvement with the cops. The only thing they should be looking into for her is who she's had contact with and/or who has had access to her information to know about the kills. The prison should have records they can check and the rest is just going over who she was close to back in the day. This is boring and frustrating me, but I want to give it one more episode to convince me.
