As always I have a LOT to say. Lets get into it!
Majority of my predictions were right for this episode, so yay me! However, the one that I was the most confident about was wrong lol I was so sure that we would got the 2000 flashback with Day's mother, but we started off with Ozone's dream, which I thought it was a good decision since it sets off the tense mood for this episode. Surprisingly, my predictions about both of the accidents being dreams were correct. I was sure that one of them was a dream, but wasn't sure that they will both be dreams. I was also shocked that all four of them were in the car since the teaser only showed Dream. It is interesting to know that Ozone is able to have visions. I wonder if his dreams will happen exactly as he dreamt or is it just the Night dying thing will happen and the "how it would happen" is unpredictable? I am happy that I got the "Day is the baby prediction" correct and I am also happy that I got the clock ticking thing wrong as I didn't want anything to happen to them. The loud ticking noises and the zoom in were probably there to spook the audience.
As for the plot, we are back to the tense mood after the sweetest birthday party ever. At first, I thought the episode was going slow, but it led up to an eventful part 4. Its what I have been waiting for. I am so glad that they confronted the professor so directly and Night figured out the professor's slip up. The moment I heard "I'm an orphan. Just like you", I was like "wait how did he know?", but I immediately was like "ahh maybe he put two and two together when Day said his family members died every leap day." Thankfully, I was proven wrong. Thank you Night! However, as smart as he is, I wished he believed Ozone's dreams because he should know "coincidences are not a thing in this situation anymore". As for the stalker, I am so confused over him. A part of my gut thinks he is a good guy, but majority of his actions proves the opposite like why did you kidnap Ozone when you just help them incriminate the professor? Also, how did you kidnap Ozone? It looks like Ozone went with him willingly as I can't spot a weapon and Ozone is not freaking out. Plus, I wonder why he didn't kidnap Ozone earlier as Day tends to leave Ozone alone when he goes to his classes. Maybe the library is the only place without cameras. By the way, I do not blame Dream for leaving Ozone alone as I know that she is trying to help him calm down kind of like a parent telling a kid they are going to check the closet for monsters, but I wished she wouldn't have gone far where he is out of site. For this episode, I don't have much to say about the plot as they are saving the action for next episode, but I do have a lot to say for stuff behind the scenes.
Unlike the past episodes, I had the most problems with technicalities for this episode, mainly the pacing. It felt slow for my liking at the first two parts. I think the dreams didn't help since I immediately knew Ozone was dreaming (I don't think they were trying to hide that it is a dream) and I was a bit ticked off at the camerawork, directing, & action chorography of the dream scenes, so I wanted him to wake up quickly, but the dreams lasted longer than I wanted it to. I was mainly annoyed of how Night just stood there and the speed of the entire scene was slow, making it seem that he & Dream had more time of getting out together. The chorography was a bit unrealistic to me in the second dream as Ozone could have grabbed Day from his door rather than closing his door and tried opening Day's door from the outside (thankfully, he did saved Day at the end). He could also have unlocked Night's seatbelt, but he didn't (maybe he did, but it is hard to tell from the camera angle). As much as I am complaining about the dream scenes, I am going to just take like 1 point off since dreams are supposed to be funky and sometimes doesn't make sense. Other than that, I liked the pacing of the other scenes in the first two parts like Day & Night explaining their theory to Dream & Ozone and the cute scene with Dream & Night. More about the camerawork, I wished the angles were cleaner because I wanted to see the rest of the investigation board, but some of the words were cut off as they zoomed in on the drawings, so it is not clear for the audience if they want to keep up. With all of these errors, I don't know if it is just me being tired recently with me being behind by 3 episodes (lol) or is it the episode, but I didn't take off much points. Plus, part 4 really makes up most of the lost points. Loved the pacing and the switch cut scenes between Dream trying to find Ozone & Day and Night talking to the professor!
Talking about the acting, everyone killed it! Dew did a great job at looking sad & desperate during the scene with the professor. I can feel the despair in his eyes & voice (it shake a bit) when the professor can't help them. Also, I love seeing the cogwheels turning in his head as he realized what the professor said in the elevator. He really shined in this episode. Pond, Gun, & Pahn did as well. I think we are going to see more and more of their acting chops as the tension rise and the scenes gets more emotional. My favorite scenes of them were when Dew said "We can't keep living like this" in the office (so much desperation in his voice), Pond being angry at the professor, Ozone's panic attacks after he wakes up from his dream, and Dream feeling guilty & scared that she lost Ozone. Also, I have to give some praise to Gandhi (Professor Wiwat) as he is nailing the untrustworthy facial expressions. The moment we entered the office, I already wanted to leave lol.
Time for my favorite part: the theories!
Lets talk about the elephant in the room: the professor. I knew he was sus! Well, everyone knew. He eludes a very distrustful vibe. I am so proud of Night for figuring out the professor's slip up. Upon rewatch, I noticed the professor kind of slip up another time. When Day revealed that he was born on Leap Day too, the professor didn't seem surprised at all and just seem tired when he replied back with "So we do". Another suspicious thing they showed us was the bloody envelope with the words "Everyone will know what you did". I am thinking that it is either an old package that Day's family or some strangers sent back in the day that was described by the nurse in episode 4 (probably not since she said it stank the entire place) or a recent package that the stalker guy sent (most likely). I wonder if there is anything in the envelope (maybe a handwritten letter from the sender or a copy of a page from a book (maybe the curse is from an old book)). I think there is nothing in it. Lastly, when he was talking about his family, all of the numbers are equivalents of 4. He married his wife 20 years ago (2000 - year when Day & Night were born) and his daughter is 16 years old (2004 - year when Day & Night's fathers died). This really ties into my theory that he is affected with the curse, but found a way to transfer it to Day & Night by doing sacrifices. Now, I really believe that he is the 2008 mass shooter.
At first, I thought the stalker guy was the shooter, but a part of my gut thinks he is good. Yes, I know he is holding a knife to Ozone's face in the teaser. However, part of me thinks that is too easy to predict and not everything is like it seems. As I said before, it doesn't looked like he is holding a weapon, Ozone is not in restraints, and he is not freaking out, so it seems like he is going with him willingly. I don't know why he was carrying Ozone in the teaser, maybe he knocked him out, so Ozone don't know where his apartment is or he fainted lol. What if he was holding the knife for something else like in self-defense because someone is trying to attack them (I am not sure as he was smirking)? I still think he is the professor's curse partner, which explains why he had hold of Day's birth document, but maybe he doesn't like transferring the curse to innocent people and believes there is another way to stop the curse, which is why he is interested in Ozone because he can talk to the stars. I still don't know how did the camera glitched in episode 5 or how to explain the missing package besides blaming it on the curse.
Another thing I can't figure out is why will Night die? I don't think the curse or the professor wants him dead because I presume the curse needs two people to work, so either he sacrifices himself to save Dream or the curse can manage without him. Since he is the closest to the professor, maybe there will be a huge fight between them. One thing that caught my attention is that he said Ozone's drawings doesn't align with his events, but only Day's (maybe that is why he will die). That doesn't make sense to me as the flashbacks tell us that every incident for Day & Night happen at the same time. Maybe he is talking about the first one (2000) where they said it happened at daytime, but according to the pilot trailer, Day's mother died at noon and Night's mother died at midnight. Also, the drawing looks like a mix of light & dark colors, but light is a bit more dominant. However, his theory is wrong as the 2016 one says it is nighttime, but the incident happen at daytime. Either Night will realize his mistake later on or there was a production error with the drawings or I am missing something. By the way, I am not sure if Professor Wiwat is also responsible for Night's mother's death. I think he is responsible for Day's mother's death (like he did an entire sacrificial ritual lol), which is why Day is cursed. However, either he is responsible for Night's and he wasn't at the surgery room at that time or he was in the room, but we haven't found out yet or Night was always destinated to have his mother died (cursed or not).
Here are my predictions for next episode:
~ It will start off with the 2000 Day's mother flashback (I am still not over with this prediction lol I am bound to get this one right someday) (I need more information as what piece of evidence did the nurses have to blame him for the mother's death)
~ A rift between Day & Night will happen next episode (maybe Day got super angry at Dream)
~ Day & Night will get confrontational with the stalker (I saw a scene in the trailer a while ago where they were on a rooftop and someone (looks like the stalker) was behind them talking) (maybe we will get that since it looks like they are on a rooftop)
~ Night will survive the accident. He probably will get stabbed or suffered a great injury in the abdomen by someone (maybe the professor wielding a metal weapon)
~ The curse or the stars are trying to talk to Dream or someone is trying to kidnap Dream (maybe use as blackmail to get to Night). If she is kidnapped or badly hurt, maybe it will be the same person that will hurt Night.
~ The stalker is somewhat of a good guy and he is trying to help them defeat the curse & the professor by talking to Ozone
Favorite Scene: Office scene with Day, Night, and the professor (I have been waiting for a confrontation scene with the professor since the beginning, so I was so stoked that we had it here and I loved how direct they were with their accusations to him)
Favorite Character: Day, Ozone, Dream, & Night (This is my second time of bringing this section up even though I said I was getting rid of it lol, but all main leads are killing it! I am really proud of Night catching the professor mess up. Plus, Dew is really improving his acting as episodes pass.)
I gave this episode a 9. The technicalities were an issue with me, but part 4 brought the score up. If there wasn't a part 4, I would probably gave the episode an 8 (maybe a 7.5).
I am really stoked to watch the next episode since it seems like the most action-packed episode so far! See you then!
P.S. I am slowly catching up with the episodes, so I might be up to date by this week.
P.S.S. If you are wondering why I am praising Dew a lot here is because he showed the most improvement out of the four of them and I want to show how proud I am of that since I was criticizing him in previous episodes. By the way, Pond & Gun were already great in their acting and Pahn has been consistently good.
P.S.S.S. A few episodes ago, I said that I thought Earn was going to be the professor's daughter, but someone told me that she already appeared in episode 2 because she played Joy (oopsie).
P.S.S.S.S. It is funny that the professor says he gave his all to save Day's mother, but in reality, he just stood there when there was no heartbeat lol.
P.S.S.S.S.S. Here is a summary of the drawings (I tried putting it side-by-side, but it won't allow me to):
Day
2000: Mother^*/
2004: Father
2008: Sister^*
2012: Grandparents/
2016: Aunt & Uncle^
2020: Cousin
2024: ?*/
Night
2000: Mother^
2004: Father^*/
2008: Uncle/
2012: Dog*/
2016: Girlfriend*/
2020: Girlfriend^*/
2024: ?
^ - Time when the curse struck
* - Time that the drawings predicted, according to Night's interpretation
/ - Time that the drawings predicted, according to my interpretation
Note #1: The 2000 accident happen both at daytime & at nighttime.
Note #2: We don't know when the 2012 accident happen, but the board says it happened at nighttime (I am using Google Translate to guess what the word said since I can't read Thai).
Note #3: I put question marks in the 2024 one, just in case if Dream & Ozone don't survive until then.
