Runaway (2025)

Un énorme potentiel mal exploité

Là où on aurait pu s'attendre à GLs sur fond horrifique, Runaway nous plonge plutôt dans un thriller horrifique avec deux/trois scènes "romantiques" très vite balayées par l'intrigue. Ici, il n'est pas question d'une série à l'eau-de-rose, mais plutôt d'une course contre-la-montre pour briser une prophétie.
Cependant, cette course contre-la-montre se fait ressentir dans le rythme des épisodes avec une fin qui semble faite à la va-vite par manque d'épisodes probablement. Ce qui est clairement dommageable puisque la série réussit, dans ses premiers épisodes, à instaurer une tension presque omniprésente, que ce soit via l'ost qui colle parfaitement au genre, ou encore à l'intrigue elle-même.
Pour faire simple, il y avait un bon potentiel initial, qui a été malheureusement rattrapé par le manque d'épisodes.

Bien que cette fin soit particulièrement décevante, le reste de la série ne l'est pas tant puisque cette enquête haletante amène sur la tension dont j'ai parlé plus tôt, mais aussi sur l'évolution de la relation entre Win et Boon. Relation pudique, construite sur le vécu des épreuves et non pas sur les schémas habituels que l'on retrouve dans tous les GLs. Ici, pas de relation enemies to lovers, boss x employee, childhood friends to lovers, ou que sais-je encore, mais une relation de destin partagé. Deux âmes-soeurs se dévoilant progressivement l'une envers l'autre au fur et à mesure que l'intrigue avance, avec des moments de complicités ou encore d'ouverture à l'autre progressifs.

Malheureusement pour les fans de GLs plus "standards" cette esquisse de liens forgés dans la douleur est gommée par la fin brutale et ouverte de la série. On aurait pu penser que les scénaristes offriraient un dénouement heureux entre les deux protagonistes, mais le plot-twist final vient anéantir nos espoirs tout en restant cohérent avec les propos tenus par Jomkwan : "Je te suivrai vie après vie".
Bien qu'il s'agisse pas du happy ending escompté, cette fin a le mérite d'être au moins raccord avec un concept que l'on voit dès le début de la série, le karma. Car même si Win et Boon ont tout affronté ensemble, elles ont surtout (et il faut le nommer) tué Jomkwan ensemble. Ce qui de mon point de vu, n'est qu'un juste retour du bâton.

Côté production, on regrettera cette fin bâclée et l'aspect cheap des fantômes et les animations autour d'eux. A croire que les effets spéciaux ont été confiés à un stagiaire...

Du côté de l'acting, il faut saluer la performance de Music, qui a brillamment interprété cette héroïne imparfaite, en proie au doute, à l'appréhension et la peur. Plaifah a été plus décevante, il ne suffit pas de d'avoir l'air blasé pour jouer une sauveuse malgré elle.

En bref, une série au potentiel énorme, mais pas suffisamment exploité malgré son intrigue novatrice : 7,5/10.

It's a shame that even GL fans are sleeping on this series.

As a horror and GL fan, I found this series to be a breath of fresh air, offering a perfect blend of suspense, romance, and captivating storytelling. Unlike other book adaptations in the GL genre, Runaway stays true to the source material, effectively capturing the story's essence and characters in a way that is both engaging and satisfying. The series does a great job of honoring the original work, bringing the story to life on screen in a captivating way.

A praiseworthy feature is the performance. The actors give strong performances, really bringing their characters to life with depth and authenticity and pulling viewers into the emotional journey of both the protagonists and the antagonist. Moreover, the story is well-paced, with each episode unraveling new twists and turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The series manages to maintain a perfect balance between horror and romance. While the series primarily focuses on horror, the inclusion of romance in the story is done tastefully, never veering off track or losing sight of its key plot points. The slow-burn romance between the leads adds an extra layer of complexity to the narrative. Even without love scenes, the chemistry between the protagonists shines through. The slow-burn is slowburning.

Another aspect that stands out is the top-notch production values. The meticulous attention to detail in set design, props, and even makeup and wardrobe is commendable. Under Oat Vatanyu's direction, the series creates a visually stunning yet darker world that feels immersive and atmospheric. The seamless editing, especially the transition between the past and present, really helps build emotional rhythm throughout the series. On top of that, the excellent audio mixing and color grading further enhance the scary mood and tone of the show.

While Runaway excels in many aspects, there are some areas that could use some improvements. Some of the CGI in the series looks a bit rough, and the ghosts are very typically portrayed. They come off funny rather than scary. Plus, the level of horror is rather tame, with very minimal and predictable jump scares. So it's suitable for scaredy-cats and those who prefer a more subtle approach to horror entertainment. But for a hardcore horror fan like me, the scary parts feel a bit underwhelming.

In conclusion, Runaway simply shines on its own and manages to carve its own niche in the world of GL dramas, offering something new that is sure to captivate audiences. Plus, it proves that even without love scenes, it's still possible to make a series an excellent one. It's a shame that this series doesn't get the recognition it deserves even from GL fans.
