When the Cunning Meets the Shrewd

Lets meet Shen Hexi the resurrected shrewd and ruthless woman, and Xiao Huayong the forever frail and cunning crown prince. Both needed to tread the jagged path of the court and palace and learnt to dabble between what they intend people to see of them, and what they really are. Both are very calculative and strategically crafty. Shen Hexi is a commandery princess summoned by the emperor to the capital from the Northwest frontier to marry a prince. She sets her objective in stone right from the start, to marry a prince who would guarantee the safety of herself and her clan, one who would never have their power hungry interests clash with the survival of her family. Although she found the delicate crown prince counting days to his end to fit this role, the crown prince found himself drowned in the love for Shen Hexi, and contemplate whether to satisfy his greed by marrying her to spend the remaining short years he has on his life with, or avoid her from becoming a widow and face palace intrigue all alone altogether, all while he is investigating about the real culprit behind his poisoning when he was a child.

I am always a sucker at harem power struggle and this show has one of the most satisfying inner palace face-off ever. The FL being an extremely shrewd and ruthless right from the start makes sure no one could trample her after being resurrected into She Hexi’s body. She does not need a hero to swoop her off her feet and fend dangers for her, because she strategically lays her groundwork before going into any fight at all. She doesn’t need to wield a spear or a sword, all she needed is to grasp the will of the people around her, a true political heroine. Meng Ziyi excelled in this, since she’s had a share on playing similar role in Blossom, though Shen Hexi is, in my opinion, waaay better than Dou Zhao when it comes to ruthlessness. She set clear objectives and boundaries, lets people know and understand this, and she never gets swayed by smooth-talking, pleading or threatening.

This is the second time that i saw He Yu and he carried the ML character really well. I am actually surprised to realize he was actually Furong Jun from Legend of Shenli. I definitely did not recognize him until I checked out his MDL page after i finished the show. Anyway, the Crown Prince is written to be extremely meticulous, crafty and intelligent, but what I like the most is how he manoeuvred around his siblings to eliminate their chances at FL’s hand. And i totally love the fact that he’d act coquetishly with Fifth Prince Xiao Changqing at some point of the show despite being at odds with each other, acting like a real baby brother with that little cheeky voice,”Help me bandage the wound, it’s painful, brother,” 😆 or “brother, i am hungry,” and then provoke him the next minute. He’s like the youngest brother who is showered with most love by the parents and goes off playing pranks with his lesser-favoured brothers and shout victim to get away. This character is very shameless, be it using his illness to curry favour or get away with anything, or gaslighting people to get them go with his plans. It’s honestly a fun amid grey flag character. I can’t particularly stand possessive ML so I am glad he snapped out of it quickly after or else i might have dropped this. It’s amazing how in sync the Crown Prince is with Shen Hexi once theyre together. And how he carefully wove his intricate net of people all over the place so she would never run out of help to maneouvre around the court is exceedingly brilliant and sweet at the same time.

Though I must say the star couple is actually the side couple Captain Bu Shulin and Vice Minister Cui Jinbai. To see the reverse-courting by Captain Bu on Cui is totally hilarious, especially when she did it only to use him as a shield against the courting from the noble ladies. The fact that she’s only after him for something non romance-related is fun to watch, especially when her male disguise is very convincing and she looks nothing feminine at all. Her height and sharp, chiselled facial feature contributed a lot to this, which most actresses who have played cross dressing roles lack of. The voice didnt sound deep enough for a man but she really did better than most cross-dressing actress i’ve seen so far, though i am not too sure if she dubbed her own voice or not. She also maintained a masculine mannerism throughout the disguise and never faltered even once. I am very impressed with the actress Fan Shuiqi, and I think she really stole the show from the mainleads with her outstanding male impersonation performance. And how this character tries to get away when Cui finally reciprocated afterwards was even more hilarious. They’re really fun to watch.

There are a lot of familiar faces here, i spotted those who played Xia Jingshi from Fated Hearts, Yu Qianqian from Pursuit of Jade, Gu Yu from Vendetta of An, Shen Muyue from Legend of Shenli. I am ecstatic to see Jeremy Xu who played Gu Mudan from Whispers of Fate and most recently Peter Ho who also played FL’s father in Key to the Phoenix Heart which I dropped right before starting on this show. They all gave an exceptional performance and I adore them very much.

There were more romance scenes than action/physical fights here, and there wasn’t as much palace intrigue as I anticipated, too bad for that. Not sure how the novel went, but I felt that there was so much more potential for this show to expand of the court power struggles and physical fights by the seemingly-delicate-but-actually-skillfully-strong crown prince. I just feel that it could have been a more engaging plot than it really is, instead of focusing on the main couple courtship which was really boring to me. But on a side note, i liked both characters enough not to use the FF button too much. 😆

Regardless, I enjoyed this show.

Great Cast, Terrible Execution

I went into this drama with very high expectations, primarily because I absolutely love Meng Zi Yi and He Yu from their previous romantic works with different on screen partners. Sadly, it didn’t work.

Blossoms of Power has all the ingredients to be a really great drama. The story follows Gu Qingzhi, a woman who dies and is transported into the body of an entirely different noblewoman named Shen Xihe. Armed with this new identity, Shen Xihe journeys to the imperial capital to marry one of the princes.

Upon her arrival, she immediately crosses paths with her old husband from her past life, Xiao Changqing, while simultaneously navigating intense attention from all other princes, including the brilliant Crown Prince, Xiao Huayong, who has been pretending to be weak all his life, but secretly knows martial arts and has a whole network of spies.

I mean, what’s not to love?
Reincarnation? Check.
Crown Prince with a secret identity? Check.
Multiple brothers fighting over one woman? Check.
Strong female lead? Check.

But oh my God, what a mess... I haven’t been so frustrated watching a historical drama in a very long time.

While Blossoms of Power features a large, interesting cast of characters with an excellent supporting lineup, and obviously amazing leading couple, the writing is completely uneven. Half the time, it is entirely unclear where the story is actually going. The pacing is off. In places it’s so fast that it’s clear a lot has been cut away for screen. Some of the key scenes and important reveals needed to be seen not just talked about. In other places, the pace is extremely slow and dragged down by scenes that didn’t need to be so long, or plotlines that lead absolutely nowhere. The show spends stretches of episodes hyper-focused on one specific issue, completely forgets about everything else, and then randomly pivots.

Worse, the writers completely abandon intriguing setups. For instance, they spent time building a dynamic between Xiao Changying and Shen Yingruo only for it to vanish. If the writers did not intend to continue with their storyline, they should have cut those scenes out and included the ones that actually needed to be there.

By the end of the show, it is glaringly obvious that the writers simply forgot about multiple storylines and characters, leaving them completely dropped without a single word of explanation. On the contrary, some of the characters that did not spend a lot of time on screen and their storylines were completed earlier in the drama, were given longer scenes that made no sense and wasted screen time. For example, Second Prince or Fourth Prince had bland storylines. Their death scenes should have been cut in half. At least.

Let’s talk about romance now.

The romance between Shen Xihe and Xiao Huayong is a massive slow-burn that ultimately feels somewhat unbelievable in certain parts. Shen Xihe remains extremely cold for three-quarters of the drama, only to suddenly realize she fell for Xiao Huayong out of nowhere. Don’t get me wrong. I did like the romantic tension. I think the biggest mistake here is the fact that writers dragged on her cold shoulder era for too many episodes. I deeply wish her character started to warm up much earlier in the timeline, so this emotional shift in her doesn’t feel too sudden.

Furthermore, the romantic chemistry wasn’t what I expected. They are both incredibly fine actors, and I know for a fact that they both can pull off intimacy beautifully. Having seen He Yu’s work with Esther in Speed and Love, I was incredibly excited to see what he and Meng Zi Yi can give us. Additionally, I really liked Meng Zi Yi in Blossom.

However, she felt detached in some intimate scenes. They both had some good kissing scenes, but also some were not so good. No, I don’t mean to say that the romance is done poorly. On the contrary, I think the romance was still done very well. I kept watching because of the romance. But I think Xiao Huayong was the highlight of the show, mostly because he was the only character that brought comedic relief to the drama during his pursuit of Shen Xihe. However, I still think that none of the attributes writers gave him at the beginning of the show like his hidden martial arts skills or his hidden identity were utilized to the full potential in the show. Writers kind of screwed up because instead of letting the character reveal his true self with the flair—because there was so much fuss made about keeping it secret—they just let it all fizzle out. Which leaves me with the question why introduce Xiao Huayong secret identity at all? He could have remained a sick Crown Prince, and that would have been enough for the kind of story we received.

Before I move on to the last part, I want to add that the female lead is an absolute badass here. That’s one thing that I truly liked about the drama. Additionally, the relationship between the lead couple is interesting. I like that he allows her be herself without tying her down. Relationships between all the brothers and all the sisters are nuanced and written well. However…

A Final Insult of an Ending

The absolute worst part of the drama is the final arc. Xiao Huayong completely disappears for the last four episodes of the series. Well because he dies. Then, in the final two minutes of the drama, he suddenly shows up out of nowhere with absolutely no explanation as to how, why, or where he was, and if this is even true, or if she’s seen another dream.

Frankly, this ending pissed me off. If he was alive the whole time, he essentially left Shen Xihe alone in a den of vipers to fend entirely for herself. This was such a letdown. While the drama has decent production value, a great main cast, and a solid premise, the execution is an absolute mess that leaves you completely unsatisfied.

I actually had to go online and look up some information about the original novel. Yes, I understand why writers chose not to include what he did during those four years of absence. But I think that viewers who don’t have a chance to read source material deserve better than to scour the Internet for answers.

Would I recommend this drama? Probably if you like any of the actors, or while you’re waiting for something with a much better storyline. But I wouldn’t expect anything extraordinary or well written just because the cast and the production are high-end.

I additionally I did not like music at all. This drama has this typical dramatic old school depressing music score that invokes a feeling of doom in me.

Absolute Cinema!

Amazing! I need a sequel, a behind the scenes documentary, and four spinoffs. This drama was just too good, and an absolute pleasure to watch. I can not put into words how enthralled I was by the cast. I grew so attached to every single character. Everyone arrived to this set locked in! I loved how each relationship, romantic or not, was written with so much care and thoughtfulness. Unlike some other dramas, never once did I feel like a character's morals were being compromised to move the plot along. I am definitely going to be rewatching this thirty more times 😭

Came for He Yu

I went into Blossom of Power mainly because of He Yu, and honestly, He Yu alone was worth the watch. He was adorable, playful, sincere, and then suddenly dangerous when the situation called for it. His expressions and eyes continue to be one of my favorite things about him, and I loved watching his character fall so completely in love with the Crown Princess. He Yu is easily my 100000/10 for this drama.

The romance took a while to win me over. I found the Crown Princess too cold and couldn't initially understand why so many princes were falling for her, especially the Crown Prince who seemed completely smitten almost immediately. I personally prefer female leads who are brighter, more expressive, charming and playful, so Meng Ziyi's restrained portrayal wasn't immediately my cup of tea.

But as the story progressed, I came to understand that her coldness was actually an important part of the character. When the other characters noticed that the Crown Princess was smiling more, I realized, yes, me too! Her gradual acceptance of the Crown Prince's sincerity and her eventual ability to let her guard down made much more sense to me.

Ironically, the character also made me reflect on myself. I'm not naturally very affectionate either, and watching her made me realize how easily being reserved can be perceived as coldness, even when there is love underneath. So unexpectedly, the drama gave me a little personal wake-up call.

Episode 32 absolutely broke me. I knew from the beginning that this was supposed to have a happy ending, but that didn't make the heartbreak any easier. The dream sequence where she believed the Crown Prince was still alive had me crying. I had to finish the drama that night because there was no way I was going to sleep without knowing that it would end happily. I may or may not have watched Episode 35 at 2x speed because I desperately needed the reunion.

My biggest complaint is the ending. Episode 36 felt rushed, especially the lack of an explanation for how the Crown Prince came back. I appreciated the epilogue, though. Those extra moments were exactly what I needed after all that emotional trauma.

Overall, I enjoyed the drama and especially appreciated the themes of trust, sincerity, resilience, love and learning to open yourself up to someone. The chemistry between the leads worked for me, although it wasn't quite at the level of my favorite C-drama couples. Overall rating 8.8/10

Strong start with a weak ending

loved this one quite a lot.

i try to watch whatever meng ziyi is in because i love the characters she is kind of typecast in, and this was a hit for me (for the most part).
the first 10-15 episodes were the strongest part, and we go slowly but surely into shallow waters after a certain point, mainly after their marriage, and yet it was ok enough to keep me hooked until the end.

he yu needs to do more characters like this; his physical comedy is great, and he looks insanely good as hua yong; i would audibly swoon whenever he was on screen.
the princes were definitely there, very annoying and boring, with little to almost no life beyond liking xi he-trying to win her hand-being in a terrible relationship with someone else. lai wei ming probably sensed how tired i was of his character, and he became less and less present in the story; i hated to see him go but was glad for not having to deal with chang ying.
the fifth prince got into my nerves, and i wish they hadn't given him that redemption arc. honestly, they shouldn't even let the "my wife died and i think xi he is her reincarnated" plotline go as far as it did.

the second couple was everything; i saw right through the cross-dressing when bu shu lin first appeared, but it was super convincing and well done. the forbidden love between her and cui jin bai was incredible and helped a lot with the romance aspect of the drama since the main couple were stuck pretending they wouldn't get together for quite a while.

after the main couple's marriage, it got boring. they were sickly sweet with each other, and it got to the point where i was wondering when hua yong was going to die so we could get the story moving forward. don't get me wrong, i love romance, but it was way too much.

the ending was ok; the coup was resolved, and the heir was guaranteed, but unless i missed something, they never explained how hua yong was alive? oh well, i was happy for them regardless.

Very enjoyable if you manage to turn your brain off for most of it.

I don’t really have much to say or complain about this drama to be honest, it did its job as an okay idol drama. As long as you’re not looking too much into the plot or storyline it’s pretty enjoyable.

The most enjoyable part for me definitely has to be the male lead. This is my first He Yu drama (I’m not counting the two episodes of the mess I watched him and Esther Yu in) and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised, he was the perfect Xiao Huayong, shameless, brazen, loving and completely incorrigible, I loved every minute of it, and his acting was also pretty good. Overall, there’s not much to say about his character; a sickly presenting crown prince who is not actually what he appears to be, the trope has been done since time immemorial, nothing to write home about. But maybe because I’ve been watching mostly serious shows, I found it quite refreshing, he reminded me very much of Zhangsun Wuji in Legend of Fuyao actually. A lot of people found it tiring and pathetic how his entire character was reduced to chasing after the female lead, and I get that it could be tiring to watch after the first 20 episodes and the couple has still gotten nowhere, but his character in the first place was of a dying prince, the only thing he cared about was finding the person that poisoned him, and then all of a sudden he fell in love with this woman and she became his sole motivation to live, its understandable. What is NOT understandable however is the first episode where he sees this woman that drowned and then he proceeds to give this total stranger the medicine that will save his life for like no reason?? whatsoever??
The leads had pretty solid chemistry though, and they’re both very good looking people that look good together, which is why all the cinematographic shots were just of them serving looks.

Apart from that the other thing I liked is that this drama knew that its strong points were not in the writing, so any scenes of political maneuvering or scheming were gotten quickly out of the way, they made it a said and done thing. It became kind of a game to me at some point, how quickly will they resolve this political dilemma? The answer is 15 minutes at the most. In the first episodes there was this ledger that contained a list of all the corrupt officials and their crimes, you know, the kind of thing that if it comes out will shake the verry foundation of the Court and will cause an upheaval, we literally see nothing of it. Who committed what and what were their punishments? Who knows and who cares, definitely not the writers. I think it’s actually much better that they went this route, rather than give us very shit writing filled with so many plotholes it basically becomes a sieve.

Third point in the favor of this drama is the second lead couple, I so enjoyed their story and relationship, the actress for Bu Shulin especially did a pretty good job. It’s the first time I’ve seen her and her disguise and acting of a man was very good. The premise of a lady disguised as a man and being able to navigate living alone in the capital since childhood as the sole heir of a marquis could’ve been a very compelling storyline, I’ll explain in my third negative point.

As for the not so good part of things, number one; Meng Ziyi and her character. Yes, Shen Xihe was supposed to be this aloof, cold, goddess like character, but MZY acted her like a doll, always the perfect makeup and accessories on, but no expression, she could not convey her emotions through the screen for anyone to even understand. The scene in the last battle, where Huayong had a moment with the emperor before dying was very sad, and the two actors did a good job conveying that, then it cuts to him actually dying in her arms, and you have this woman who has lived through two lives, lost her entire family in the first and now the love of her life in the second, this strong woman that has never shown weakness or vulnerability in both lives finally breaks down and everything comes pouring out. You would expect ugly heaving sobs and a heartbreaking scene, but MZY made it so underwhelming I just fast
forwarded. And Shen Xihe has so much plot armor I wonder how she hasn’t suffocated from the thickness of it, she can basically step on any toes—consort, princess, prince, duke, duchess—it doesn’t matter, she’s going to get away with it. All the princes also love her for no reason, like they all fell head over heels for this one girl minutes after meeting her, crazy things. Somehow her personality also switched overnight and none of the people close to her found it weird or alarming? This sweet, kind girl became ruthless and cold in the blink of an eye and even just develops skills and knowledge she never had and no one thought to even question it, they just carried on the way SXH carried on when she was reincarnated, as if it was nothing out of the ordinary.

When I said the drama knew its weaknesses were in plot writing, they did not realize that their strengths also did not lie with character writing. I don’t even want to get into the insufferable unbearable annoyance that was that obsessive pest, Prince Xin. I’ve not encountered such an annoying character that forced me to skip their scenes in a while, I loathe him. But all other female characters are somehow there to prop up SXH, even the second fl. They were all one track minded and had no other thing going on besides being jealous of her and trying to take her down. It is lazy writing and actually lowkey misogynistic writing. BSL was smart enough to navigate the scheming capital as a girl in disguise since she was a child but she was not smart enough that she was caught by SXH, she was not smart enough to get a body double in all those years, SXH had to do it for her. The sister, Gu Qingshu is basically just jealous girl 101, she had no quarrel with SXH but she repeatedly tried to get in her way why? Because she was written as the typical jealous antagonist with no other goal. The Noble Consort that should be fighting with other consorts is instead in competition with her stepson’s wife, not even the stepson that would inherit the throne she wants her son to inherit, instead it’s the wife she’s jealous of. If they’re not jealous of her they have to have been given their power by her (like the foreign consort) or some sort of agency (like her half sister she gave permission not to marry), its all very annoying.

All of a sudden, the second couple vanished in episode 26 and there was no more mention of them until SXH needed her avengers to assemble. I actually hated how they just made BSL’s character pregnant all of a sudden. She had worked her entire life to hold onto her position as heir and then they just have her sleep with a man and go off to have his babies, very stupid trope, its 2026 ffs. Then she comes back as BSL’s twin sister when it has been repeatedly emphasized that she’s the only child and heir so how did she/he now gain a twin sister? I find it a grave injustice that was done to her character because she was very firm on doing her duty, even breaking up with the vice minister because things were starting to get serious and she could not afford that.

Overall like I said in the beginning, quite enjoyable if you don’t take it too seriously. Oh and they really could have just scrapped that suddenly back to life thing and just left XHY dead.

My opinion about ML's character

I started this drama because of the second couple, i loved their dynamics and they were my main motivation to finish it.
(Second couple are my biological parents btw, I don’t make the rules.)

The drama was actually very good, it was very easy to watch, with the right amount of romance, politics and harem elements. The side characters were well written and easy to love. The main couple was also cute.
Overall, i liked it and gave it a rather high rating.

There’s just one thing that baffles me.

Why is it that i saw few negative comments about the female lead’s cold personality and her not reciprocating ML's feelings sooner but I haven’t seen a single person talk about the ML's pushy side?
Its crystal clear the male lead is devoted to his partner and has everything planned out for her and does his best to ensure she’s happy and safe that makes him a green flag in many ways (and i love his shamelessness) but there were clear moments of him being pushy with fl and not respecting her boundaries.. while watching i found those scene quite uncomfortable but i didn’t pay it much attention since she acted okay afterwards,
But I just don’t understand why this flaw of ml is overlooked but the fl being cold towards everyone equally and not falling for ml at first sight is considered such a horrible thing?
And regarding the ending,
I’ve always thought a drama needing comments from other watchers or reading a novel to make the audience understand the plot better means it was incompetent in communicating its story clearly.
I finished the drama and had to spend an hour going through all comments from mdl and twitter just to understand wth was happening in the final episode.
This is just my opinion about some aspects of the drama otherwise it was a good drama and I quite enjoyed it.

Shameless Crown Prince Falls for His Ice-Cold Crown Princess

She portrays her character with confidence, intelligence, and emotional depth, making it easy to connect with her journey.
🩷I really liked He Yu's portrayal of Crown Prince Xiao Huayong. His screen presence was incredible, and his performance made me become a fan of his acting all over again. 🥹✨I especially loved how shamelessly and persistently he pursued Shen Xihe. 🤭💕 The way he slowly won her heart without ever giving up was so enjoyable to watch. Their interactions had great chemistry.
🩷The court politics are engaging, with plenty of twists, shifting alliances, and power struggles that keep the story exciting and constantly moving forward. Every political move and scheme adds tension, making it hard to predict what will happen next.
🩷The costumes, palace sets, and cinematography are absolutely stunning. Every scene feels grand, elegant, and beautifully crafted, making each episode visually captivating. The attention to detail in the costumes and production design adds so much to the overall atmosphere, giving the drama a truly cinematic feel. ✨🏯🎬
🩷I must say I really liked Lai Weiming's portrayal of Prince Lei. He did an amazing job with the character. 🥹✨At first, I honestly thought Prince Lei would turn into an obsessive and possessive second male lead, but I'm so glad the character didn't go in that direction. Instead, I really appreciated how he accepted his unrequited feelings for Shen Xihe, chose to let go gracefully, and sincerely wished for her happiness. That made me respect his character even more. ❤️And haha, I was actually shipping him with Shen Xihe's half-sister, Shen Yingrou, but that ship sank before it could even set sail. 😂🚢💔

👎🏻Dislikes
💔I like that the romance develops gradually, though at times I find the slow pace a little frustrating.
💔Another character I had mixed feelings about was Jeremy Xu's character Prince Xin. Even though the drama revealed his reason for committing treason in the second-last episode, I wasn't fully convinced by how his character was written. To me, Prince Xin didn't contribute much to the overall story. Most of his screen time revolved around his possessiveness and obsession, and I feel the writers could have developed his character much better by giving him more depth and a stronger role in the plot. Jeremy Xu delivered a solid performance with what he was given, but I think the screenplay let his character down. Interestingly, he also played an obsessive second male lead in *Love of Nirvana*. I hope he gets to take on more diverse and well-written roles in the future instead of being typecast in similar characters.

✨Final verdict
If you enjoy dramas like The Double, Story of Kunning Palace, or Blossom, Blossoms of Power is well worth watching. It stands out for its smart heroine, intricate political plotting, and high production quality. While it isn't perfect, it's one of the stronger historical C-dramas of 2026 so far.

Pleasing to the Heart, But Not to the Mind

Warning: This review contains mild plot spoilers for the final arc, though I will try to keep the exact details vague!)

I absolutely loved the first 30 episodes of Blossoms of Power. The intense psychological chess match, the incredible chemistry between Xiao Huayong and Shen Xihe, and the refreshing lack of toxicity once they finally aligned made it a must-watch for me. Unfortunately, the final arc felt a bit too rushed, leaving behind several noticeable plot holes that were hard to ignore.

While the emotional payoff is beautiful, the ending asks the audience to overlook a lot of the story's established political logic. For instance, the mechanics behind the Crown Prince's "fake death" are mostly glossed over, making it feel a bit unrealistic that the palace officials handled the funeral rites without deeper verification. On top of that, keeping the Male Lead entirely off-screen for three consecutive episodes right before the finale made the pacing feel abrupt. When the narrative finally introduces its multi-year time jump, we are given almost no explanation as to how the court or the general public actually reacted to the sudden political resolution.

I am genuinely glad the main couple got the happy resolution they deserved, but the hasty execution of the finale kept what could have been a masterpiece from truly reaching its full potential.
