Must Watch
The concept is relatively new. Plot was captivating and perfectly balanced between politics, rights, and love. The acting was well executed, facial expressions matched the plot in every scene. There were so many added details that were small, yet important to touch on to make everything seamless (flashbacks to them and quotes brought back up were so good and surprised me every time). Transitions were smooth, no loose threads, every scene had a purpose that builds on the story and minimal time was wasted – which is important but not achieved by most web dramas. The script was also top tier (esp. if you understand Chinese, it's next level) better than some of the higher production dramas. Although the ending wasn't the best, could’ve easily been an alternative solution imo, so it seemed almost forced, but overall still one of the better dramas I’ve watched in recent years. Should’ve been produced as a longer drama, it had all the potential. Deserves higher rating. Was this review helpful to you?

Engaging but Lacking Depth
Dominion and Devotion is a drama that hooks you and keeps you watching, but its ambition ultimately exceeds its execution and remains limited in impact. To understand its true length and density, it helps to think of it as 8 episodes of 43 minutes each. However, the length is not the problem, I have watched mini dramas that I genuinely loved. Compared to other short dramas that manage tight, fluent storytelling within eight episodes, this one feels lower budget, overcrowded rather than cohesive, as though too many ideas were compressed and rushed without a natural flow.On the surface, the drama is engaging, blending romance, a bit of humor, political intrigue, and women’s rights. Although it touches on themes such as women’s rights, household reform, education, and anti-corruption, these elements feel circumstantial rather than intentional, less a story of a character pursuing a clear, goal-oriented vision, and more of someone reacting to events and doing their best simply because they were forced into the situation.
Key plot points, such as the baby swapping and the hidden identities of both leads, are confusing and insufficiently explained. Certain scenes come across as unrealistic, most notably the Emperor openly shedding tears in court, which would undermine her authority and credibility as a ruler. The excessive face-smoothing filter is also unnecessary.
The female lead is written as courageous, intelligent, strategic, and compassionate, but her portrayal feels overly emotional; it leans more toward excess rather than inspiration, not the emotional depth of a woman who would inspire, but rather a superficial one shown with tears. Her character does not convince me at all. The actress’s performance in this role did not convince me either.
The veteran actors deliver noticeably stronger performances, standing out more than the younger leads, in my opinion.
In the end, the male lead emerges as the more powerful and grounded figure, particularly in the finale, where he sacrifices himself to save the female lead, reinforcing the sense that his arc carries greater narrative weight than hers, at least this is how I felt at the end.
Overall, while Dominion and Devotion has moments of charm and engaging storytelling, it ultimately feels uneven, overambitious, and more entertaining than meaningful.

Worth watching short drama
The acting and story was superb. It's not a typical happily ever after for the love of both male and female characters. In the end, the true identity of both lead roles wasn't exposed. This drama projects the love and sacrifices for nation and how woman is capable in doing tasks that the society perceives that the can't.Was this review helpful to you?
One not to miss…
Absolutely loved this story. The focus being primarily on women’s rights was amazing and executed beautifully. Also loved the secondary plot as well. This is definitely a mini drama you don’t want to skip over. The plot was very compelling, fast paced and kept me on my toes with all the twists and turns. The cast did an amazing job, especially the leads. Our FL definitely shined throughout and will be checking out more of her works. I appreciated that her character had balance, both strong and vulnerable. Very relatable, very human.Pros
1. Engaging
2. Strong acting
3. Good amount of romance
4. No slow moving parts
5. Women’s rights
6. Good fighting scenes
Cons
1. Had the usual cliches
2. Make up on ML was overdone, became distracting at times.
3. FL was an obvious woman
4. CGI wasn’t great. Especially those fake butterflies.
5. Dubbing. It was off at times.

Just 24 episodes with 16 min each, so quick.I just enjoyed very much the drama.
1.Acting is TOP good or vilains all actors played so well.
2. Storyline is also good, realstics not exergerated
3. There is very respectful relationship between the main charactors
4. Everyone wish for a good ruler throughout human history, people always fight for it, till our days and continue o fight for , it will never end.
5. ending is sad but for me it is the best outcome of the story.

I loved it, but I don’t want to finish it.
There is a drought for (well made) cdramas lately which is why I started to watch this short drama. I didn’t expect to like it THIS much but here I am. I loved it. I loved the story, I loved the pacing and I loved loved LOVED the ML. Then I read spoilers and now I can’t seem to click “next episode”. I care too much for these fictional characters and want them to live happily ever after.Thankfully, there is an extra little scene on WeTV China:

The only thing bad I can say about this is the acting of the FL.

One of the better web mini dramas despite a busy and rushed second half.
Subjective Gut Rating: 7.75As a mini web drama, “Dominion and Devotion” is worth checking out if you are in the mood for it. The acting is decent and the production value is surprisingly good. The sets, costumes (esp. the male lead) and the overall feel of the drama gives the illusion of a decently-budgeted full-length drama and not a cheap mini drama. This might be due to Director Zhang Zhi Wei’s magic. She also directed “Fortune Writer”, one of my favorite mini web dramas.
I enjoyed the first half of “Dominion and Devotion” more than the second half. The early political plot of the selection of a new emperor, the development of the leads’ relationship and the rise and growth of the emperor are all well-paced and told. I enjoy the early chemistry between the leads, that bubbling attraction and romance developing behind all the political maneuvers.
Unfortunately, once the leads got together, the chemistry was somewhat gone. They gave us a few good kisses, but the plot in the second half becomes very political. There’s so much going on that it feels rather rushed. From the political schemes, to the demise of the villain and the secret of the birth stories, there’s just too many different plotlines that need to be covered in such a short period of time.
Despite a rushed second half, “Dominion and Devotion" is one of the better historical mini dramas. If you don’t have the time to watch a full-length 40-episode drama of a similar plot, this is a good thirst quencher. It has decent (but not amazing) acting, interesting plot and good production value. Even though I was not surprised about any of the stories as I’ve seen them in other dramas, it was still an enjoyable watch.
Completed: 6/14/2025 - Review #590

Enemy 2 Lovers with Great Chemistry
Tbh, for mini drama I think they have high budget? I love the outfit and how they decorating the places. For acting both of actor & actress are great to portrayal their own character.I enjoying how the characters interact. It's sweet savory rather than sour for me. The ending, they have both ending with one in secret. Well I don't count that one as spoiler.
I'm craving for their second collaboration rn. They're good as couple that strating from stranger/enemy to friend/companion to lovers. She gentle yet strong, he's strong yet gentle to her. I wish this is not mini drama or rather having more than 24 eps :>

Intense short-length series
Mini-series: A mix of History, Gender, and PoliticsPLOT: The ML, son of the deceased Emperor Xia (a coup), is adopted by a cunning and ambitious eunuch. The FL, daughter of a consort, pretends to be a man, as the Fifth Prince to survive with her nanny. Twenty years later, the new emperor dies when the eunuch faction dominates the court. The ML chooses the Fifth Prince as his puppet-successor. But the FL (emperor), clever as ever, gradually gains strength to get rid of the eunuch faction.
+++ Very well acted: I really like Li Ge Yang (that's why I watched the drama), but Huang Hao Yue is very convincing. Their romance is touching but realistic (no happy end between an emperor and a eunuch).
+++ The other actors are good, and we hate the Great Villain!!
+++ The direction is intense, with a fast pace. The tone is dark and bloody (with good fight scenes). The effects of a limited budget aren't apparent, except for the lack of grandiose scenes and the number of extras.
### The OSTs sometimes seem out of place with the atmosphere.
=> A good short-length series if you want action, mystery, and blood. Avoid it if you're hoping for a cute, heartwarming romance.

Mini série mix of Hist - Gender - Political

Short but AMAZING
Dominion and Devotion was such a good watch, even though it was short. The directors and screenwriters did an amazing job with the plot. I also really loved the costumes — they were so beautiful and added so much to the atmosphere of the drama. The story was well written, and even though the ending made me cry, it was so moving. He took her secret to the grave so she could sit on the throne comfortably, showing how deep his love for her truly was. Heartbreaking, but unforgettable.

Bored
Dominion and Devotion" was a story about two reigns. The king of one reign took over the reign of another king by deceit. The one who lost the reign , his wife exchanged her daughter with the one who took over the reign. In this way, the defeated king's daughter entered the conquering king's reign disguised as a prince. So, it had an interesting storyline. I had high expectations for the ending, but sad ending spoil the mood. Anyway, until the 15th episode, it was a bland story. After the 15th episode, I just hoped to see how the truth would be disclosed, and you would be excited and curious to know that. But the tragic end spoiled the mood.Flaws: The direction was poor, and the choice of the female protagonist was wrong. Only because of the male lead did I continue watching the drama, but I think this role wasn’t right for him. He deserved more than that.

A perfect blend Romance & Women Empowerment
Such a lovely & fast paced drama. A perfect plot. Both Actor & Actress were on point in their acting. The ENDINGGGG had me feeling bitter(more)sweet(less)The ML is so handsome & his acting the way he portrayed his chatchter is everything! While the FL set the perfect image of women empowerment step by step. Their romance, struggle, love & working towards one goal as team was epic.
Pei Shenzhi, his love was beyond all to safe his lover from accusations he gave his life & took THE BIGGEST truth with him to the grave.
