Close to perfect in the romance genre of fantasy KDramas
DELIGHTFUL!! No disappointments from this drama as far as I'm concerned. A true fantasy tale that delivers on romantic comedy needs. It was extremely satisfying to watch and funny in so many different ways. While additional time (by way of 2 more episodes) spent explaining foundational points of the first 3 episodes and tying up loose ends on the last 2 episodes, I still give this 10🌟‼️ as it was a close to perfect romance drama,Ok Taec-Yeon and Seohyun had a chemistry so real, thrilling and tender it covered up any gaps in telling such a unique and fun story. Some inconsistency around supporting characters caused a bit of plot anxiety. Heros become villains, villains become heroes for no other reason than to direct the story to a satisfactory end. Yes it worked! Some months ago in writing another K-drama review I mused that some viewers want a happy ending that takes you with the characters into their everyday future. Just to see what it looks like. IMO it would make a drama so much more memorable and enjoyable to see the outcome some time in the future. What was the family life like? How many children did they have? Are they happy? And so forth. Instead of the old "and they lived happily ever after" with a 30 second wrap up. Let's just say, I found the ending to my personal taste.
Below are my spot check ratings:
Actors Chosen. 10/10 (100% 👍🏾)
Characters as written 9/10
Story/Plot 10/10
Story as told 9/10
Art Direction/Cimematography 10/10
Music OST 10/10
Costume 10/10
Entertainment Value 10/10
Fantasy Story Resolution 10/10
Length of drama 10/10 (even though it could have had an extra 2 episodes to refine the tale telling.

A Love Story Based on a Drunken One-Night Stand
I debated on whether I wanted to write a review or not. I had a love/hate response to this drama. So I guess what I'll do is just list my likes and dislikes and you can be the judge as to whether to watch or not. What I liked:
*The actors and the acting, especially the two main leads. There was chemistry between these two and that made their love story that much more precious.
*There was a little of everything in this story. It was cute and funny at the start, then the writer brought intrigue and mystery into it. The story flowed fairly well and it kept me tuned in every week when new episodes came out.
*The costumes and sets were nice. This kept the visuals of the drama top notch.
*The relationship between the two main leads was one of adults. Their romance was not awkward, and it wasn't full of unrealistic juvenile behavior, which I always appreciate when a writer does that.
*I liked that it wasn't the usual historical romance with rampant palace intrigue with the horrible queen mother plotting to take control. The mystery and intrigue was one I had not yet experienced in a drama. It was something slightly different and I would say that kept me tuned in every week.
What I disliked:
The main thing I did not like is how this great love between Seon Chaek and Yi Beon started as a drunken one-night-stand. Seon Chaek was introducing Josean young people to modern day cocktails and mixed drinks. She drank heavily....really heavily. This was really unrealistic as I think if anyone had drank as much as it showed, she would be dead from alcohol poisoning. Anyway, she drunkenly meets up with Yi Beon, and winds up in bed with him spending the night. It is his first time, and from this he falls madly in love with her. I don't like the impression that this great love can happen from a drunken night of sex. In life this almost never happens. I didn't like the possessiveness that Yi Beon's character displayed because of the one night stand. Rather than love, it seemed more like "you slept with me, now I own you." The portrayal of this just left me with a bad taste. His character softened though as the story progressed so that helped. But really it was because Seon Chaek perceived this possessiveness as love, and loved him back for it. Again, I really didn't like the toxicity of representing possessiveness as love.
The switching up part of the story was weak. I honestly did not understand that two different characters had switched places until the end of the story. I thought the modern Seon Chaek had hit her head and she was unconscious and dreaming the whole thing. Because of this I didn't understand the little boy character when he appeared, nor why they had these strange flashbacks to the modern time. The scene with the two of them together in the modern world, the clock ticking, and having to write the ending was really weird. Seo Hyun's character in the modern world was never developed, and I don't believe we found out why she didn't want to be in Josean anymore. All in all, this part of the storyline was very weak and strange.
Overall what really made this drama good was Seo Hyun and Taec Yeon. They did an outstanding acting job in their leads and it really kept the storyline strong in places where it was weak. Well done to both of them!

Weak writing and directory saved by the cast's chemistry and comedy
For a something that was based on an existing work, I find the writing in this story weak. What made it worse was the subpar directory. My first impression with this was that it had nice cast but the lines were weak, the conversation was weird, the plot sequence average at most. Then it got pulled down by the terrible directory in some scenes that did not involve comedy.
It would be understandalble if the writing and directory is clunky if it was full comedy which in fact the half of the first episode and the whole second episode is. I laugh so much from there and I think the way it was directed finally made sense. Cause you really did not need a lot of sense in terms of comedy. The chemistry with the leads also was tangible making it easy in the eyes. They made the plot even more engaging.
Then came ep 3 and 4. I was really hoping a lot from it, I've even waited for it for a week. But the comedy that carried the first two episodes started to fizzle out. These two episodes were not comedic at all. It was not because it was not funny anymore but more because it had no funny scenes. It was written intentionally not to focus on the funny scenes. There were fights, problems, challenges, scheming, planning and other stuffs. To be honest I did not remember anything worth memorable in this two episodes.
Without the comedy, the issues it had with weak writing and execution started to grow its head. The story became serious and contemplative. Aside from how it had become a meh plotline now without the comedy, it was also not that motivating to watch anymore.
I am not sure if Im going to watch the next episode, thus I made this. I may, but if I was bored and had nothing to do.
Honestly they should have sticked to comedy instead of being serious. But I guess there could be no more area now for it to be comedic? And those episode 1 and 2 could be just a chance event as the plot dictated it to be comedic.
I am not excited where the story was going now. The pacing felt off somehow and it did not feel like the future story would be funny too. It might deal with betrayal, pain, conspiracy, etc, that was just not that interesting to me, it did not help that the execution might be clunky too.

A great start to fall in love with
"The first night with the Duke" is a great watch, from the storyline to cast, the costumes and the OST. Is a romantic fantasy series that balances humor, drama, and romance in a satisfying way. The story follows a modern-day girl who wakes up inside the world of a romance novel—only she's not the heroine, but a minor side character destined for a tragic end. After getting drunk, she spends the night with the story’s most dangerous character, the cold and powerful 'Duke'.The series excels in its premise: the "isekai" trope is given a refreshing spin by focusing on a heroine who uses her knowledge of the original plot to rewrite her own destiny. The chemistry between the leads is electric. The characters are beautifully made, with elegant costuming and charm .
It's a delightful blend of fantasy and romance, ideal for fans of historical settings with a modern twist. I can't wait for the rest

A Romcom Gem with Transmigration Done Right
Funny, sweet, and paced just right, this drama already feels like a treat. The FL is super relatable, and the transmigration concept, especially into a webtoon world, hits all the right notes for someone like me who’s an avid webtoon reader. It’s almost like playing an otome game, and I’d love to see an actual otome version of this plot. The first two episodes had me laughing and feeling giddy throughout; an hour felt like 20 minutes TT. It’s been a while since we got a good old romcom with this level of storytelling. Hoping it stays strong and doesn’t fizzle out like Extraordinary You. Fingers crossed for the next episodes!

The unfinished book!
This is the best way to describe this drama. It's another show with great potential, a fantastic first half, but the second half was all over the place, especially the last 2 episodes. I think it's safe to say 12 episodes were not enough for the writer to handle these characters properly.
Not gonna lie, the whole time traveling, body swapping plot surprised me, because it was actually interesting, and that's why I think this was a missed opportunity, because they could've done with this so much more.
SPOILER from here!
Literally no one get what they deserve, pretty much everyone got their happy ending or something similar. I don't get how Do Hwa Seon never get punished for almost killing Seon Chaek, she became a monk or something and then later she married to Seon Chaek's brother? What the heck?
Cho Eun Ae was a surprisingly good side-villain, but what they did to her in the finale was insane. They basically erased her memory without any explanation so she can have a happy ending with Su Gyeom, another nonsense ending.
Our main leads were great, obviously, but as I already said, almost half the season was spent on the wedding nonsense. To be honest, the finale with a 4th wall breaking was totally unnecessary, yet again.
This is basically your average romcom without proper writing. You won't miss anything if you don't watch it, but if you do, it's not that bad if you don't use your brain.

?? No Time Travel, Just Novel Chaos (and Hot Dukes)
Alright folks — if you’re still nursing a Mr. Queen hangover (same, honestly), let me introduce you to your next period drama fix… but with a twist! No time travel this time — we’ve upgraded to novel travel. Yep, our girl wakes up inside a romance book. And things only get crazier (and juicier) from there. This drama has it all:
✅ Hilarious moments (not Mr. Queen level, but still laugh-worthy)
✅ Romance that makes you squeal
✅ Classic palace politics and sword fights
✅ A throne race (because what’s a sageuk without one?)
✅ And yes... the dreaded but delicious second lead syndrome 😭
The best part? Both leads are nobles — so no poor girl–rich guy cliché. And our female lead? Total queen energy. She runs the house, throws sass, and isn’t here for your nonsense.
Only red flag? I might need therapy if she leaves the book world and the poor Duke is left crying in the palace. Or worse — forgets everything! But something tells me a plot twist is coming. 👀
So if you're into fantasy-flavored period dramas with a perfect mix of humor, romance, palace drama, and just the right amount of heartbreak — hit play. You're in for a ride.
P.S. Just wrapped this drama and good news — no tragic ending here! 🎉 Unlike so many period dramas that leave you sobbing into your pillow, this one actually gives our female lead the happily-ever-after she deserves (with her duke, of course). Honestly, it feels so satisfying to finally get a period drama that doesn’t break our hearts at the finish line!

spending the first night with the duke... or maybe prince? ?
finished 8.5/10 🌟Personally, I really liked this story. I admit that I haven't read the webtoon and that at the time there were criticisms regarding the way it was adapted, but overall, I think it's a very good drama 👏
What I liked most was the chemistry of the protagonists
A great valid point in all was that both Seo Hyun and Taec Yeon felt very natural in their acting, extra point to the kisses that were great 🤭
The overall story was interesting and I loved Seon Chaek as a character... he had a very good growth, from trying by all means to reunite the protagonists of their favorite webtoon to fighting for their own destiny 👏
Yi Beom, although he was considered a "ruthless killer," I must say that I loved his attitude towards the protagonist; he simply fell in love with her ❤️
Now, let's get to what I didn't like:
I feel like the ending was too "perfect" in every way... for me, the villains deserved more... They didn't even have a decent performance to say: ahhh well at least he apologized 🤷
I also felt like the episode cuts took their toll on him.
Dramas like these deserve 16 episodes or more.
Some supporting characters were left adrift, and others passed unnoticed...
I still think it's an excellent drama if you're looking for some comedy and romance ✨
