So much potential wasted -- again

What all of the four-and-a-half VBL productions I've watched so far have in common is that they take an intriguing premise with a lot of potential for interesting world building and plot with depth -- and then turn it into a piece of fluffy romance.

So, when I saw that "Fight for You" was another VBL production, I knew what I was in for:
* attractive main and secondary characters,
* fluff, and maybe sexy romance,
* shallow plot that never explores the rich potential for story and characters,
* the main hurdle to overcome does not naturally follow from the premise but is derived from a romance cliché,
* mediocre to great acting,
* solid camera work.

And I got all of that.
In this case, the acting was good to great -- I loved Nelson Li's performance and hope to see him in something with more depth -- and the plot was thankfully not too full of holes (like it was in "Eternal Butler") or fell apart (like in "Stay by my Side"). The background music consisted mainly of pop songs that are fine on their own but not really working as background music (same as it was in "You are Mine"), often more distracting than enhancing the experience.
And the end was so cheesy that I could have hosted a fondue party for my extended family.

The secondary couple was superfluous here and they did them a disservice in tacking them on to this drama instead of giving them their own story. (Also, why the need for monogamy?)

So:
Was it good? -- For a VBL drama, it was alright. But I do wish VBL's writers would finally commit to their plot ideas instead of reducing themselves to the (perceived?) tastes of the masses. What's most disappointing with their dramas is that there's so much more potential for a great story, layered characters and, especially as their stories are all set in the same universe, intricate world-building.

Did I like it? -- I am maybe not the best judge here, because I knew what I would be getting into when I started.

Who would I recommend it to? -- To BL fans who really want a drama to help pass the time while ogling (mostly clothed, alas!) cute / attractive guys.

Sweet, Silly and a lot of fun

Okay, I guess I needed this Taiwan piece of loving. improbable fluff this weekend. It was so honest in what it is and unapologetic. Succumbed fairly quickly to it's charms. Let your brain go and let your heart open and just enjoy the ride. I am still smiling an hour after finishing watching it. oops just got told my review is too short. Couple is sweet and attracive, Grandma is a hoot and don't make any assumptions. Things change.

This review may contain spoilers
Consent / domestic violence:
- Several instances of non-con touching framed as flirting or in a comedic light.
- Several dubcon/noncon kisses (both sober and drunk).
- One scene where one character shoves the other in the chest out of anger several times, even though he’d just been shot.
- One scene where one character gets angry, grabs a fistful of the other’s hair and forcefully kisses him.

Problematic things:
- Referring to one character as the “girlfriend”.
- Normalized corporal punishment from grandparents.

Kiss / sex scenes: no sex scenes, the farthest it went was shirtless making out in bed

Notable good points:
- Both characters took care of each other. It wasn’t one-sided, with one person in charge of protecting and taking care of the other person. Both characters took the lead in the bedroom, and when they got engaged, both characters got rings. I liked that they were equals.
- Final episode was just dedicated to them being happy together. Too many series wrap up too quickly and we don’t get to see them happy for long enough after all the angst.

Notable bad points:
- They live together, are in a relationship, and are presumably in love, but they don’t even sleep in the same bed.
- The couple earrings were weird, especially considering they were originally gifted to track and bug the other guy, but they kept wearing them even after everything was out in the open.
- Second couple got together in the final episode. I honestly didn’t want them to get together, considering one was hung up on his ex for years and only finally let him go in the final episode.

Not So Good, Not So Bad!!

Once I completed this series, I asked myself what was the premise of this series? And I honestly could not figure one out. It is your standard formulaic BL, full of tropes, cliches, customary setups, and unremarkable contrived crisis. But through at least some portions of this series, I found myself being avidly entertained chiefly because of the charming effect of the two main leads. The remainder, however, not so much because it was your standard flat setup.

The whole concept is absurd, really. If anyone seriously thought that the audience was going to believe that Xiao Bai (Nelson Ji) was some type of operative for an intelligence agency has been reading too many spy comic books. He simply never fit the part. And if you further expected the audience to believe that the focus of his attention was observing Da Hei (Andy Ko) supposedly engaging in dastardly and clandestine activities, well, you have been smoking something that perhaps you should not be partaking in.

Bad music

The storyline isn't entirely boring but acting could have been better. Also the constant music throughout the episodes seriously pissed me off, it may be during conversation or any action, there's this constant music going off. Music sets the mood and they totally ruined this. If not for that music i would have given it better ratings.

Alright. Not fantastic, just alright.

Don’t be fooled by the synopsis – it makes the show seem a lot more intense than it really is.

This is a shame because despite the espionage, crime and secret agent shenanigans, there are major plot holes in the show and there isn’t much going on on the espionage front.

To be honest, the espionage bits could have been entirely removed. This could have been a roommates-fool-grandma-but-end-up-falling-in-love type of show. Or it could be a story about a spy getting close to a target for a secret mission. It didn’t need to be BOTH. As the series concluded, the conflicts were resolved a little too easily, and the messiness of the whole situation was not fully addressed by the ending.

Despite the messiness of the storyline (or lack thereof), the good thing about this BL is that the characters are cute enough to carry this series all the way to the end. Their dynamic is sweet, playful and innocent. This couple is easy to root for because both characters are so likeable.

Don’t take the plot too seriously and enjoy the cute chemistry between the leads instead. Even if things don’t make quite sense and if they get a bit cheesy.

Fight for You draws us into a world where the line between good and evil is blurred from the very beginning. The story revolves around Da Hei, a young man who takes on jobs for the mysterious All-Service House with the sole purpose of raising money for medical expenses, and Xiao Bai, his seemingly harmless roommate, who is actually an undercover agent sent by the intelligence agency to bring the organization down from the inside. Both start out as rookies, carrying out mission after mission, unaware of how this shared danger will slowly bring them closer together.

Personally, I was expecting more action, but the series is quite light, with a somewhat absurd storyline. The spy is one of the clumsiest I’ve ever seen, and the one being spied on is terrified of cockroaches… a complete mess! 🪳😂
And that’s how a relationship begins: with a fear of cockroaches.

Even so, it’s still worth watching. The chemistry and acting between the two leads are sweet and fun, full of clichés. It’s nothing extraordinary, but when you watch the two of them together, you forget how simple the drama actually is.

The whole shop concept isn’t very clear to me; I think it should have been developed a bit more. I also feel there’s a lack of development for some of the supporting characters. It’s not very clear where some of them come from: the grandfather, the grandmother, the other couple, the other guy who suddenly appears with no explanation… anyway.

This series is worth watching mainly for the chemistry between the two main leads. It has fun, romantic moments and plenty of clichés, but despite its flaws… you should definitely give it a try. 💙✨

Good enough

I love Taiwanese BLs, I keep saying that in the beginning of every review I write of a Taiwanese BL lol
Because they always serve what I like to eat...

Most of the times I don't watch BLs for the plot, I just do that for the sports, and they entertain me, I also admire the natural interaction between the couples and I don't mean GREAT acting or TOP chemistry, but the lack of "gay panic" acting... I don't know how to explain that but story and Acting aside, the two guys touch and kiss naturally, which isn't the case for some BLs from other countries... *cough*Korea*cough!!

Story, full of holes, doesn't make any sense and I don't even care about it, but consistent enough.

Acting was nice as I said good chemistry too, side characters Aren't the best here they didn't even have proper story displaying, despite the drama being relatively long (12 ep with enough time to explain everything considering the story, or the lack of it) but they squeezed everything on the last 2 episodes.

I wanted more funny scenes between the leads, I mean I was rolling at the seduction scene, and all the drunk scenes too, they should have added more of these, they were the best!!
And you would think that the drama needed more time or something but no, it had some unnecessary and boring long scenes that I couldn't help but wish writing and direction were slightly better.

There is one intrusive thought that kept spinning in my brain after finishing ep10, I know it's not cool to talk about that or even care but I couldn't help it, and I wasn't even going to write about it but it's my review and I don't care so f**k it ~~

Which one is Seme (top) .... And which is Uke (bottom )...
Those confusing MOFOS didn't give me a chance to IMAGINE who is which, let alone know for sure !!! Like guys how can you easily fit as both!! Cause let's see, Bai is like so cute and clingy and too submissive and kind and yet too freaking aggressive and needy when he grabs Hei for a kiss like dude gives Dom. top vibes, you are mine now vibes like I needed a fan.... IN FREAKING OCTOBER!! ... On the other hand!! Hei with his sad puppy eyes and the DRUNK EXPRESSION was soooooo cute, I'd adopt him! Please let me!!! I need a new pet!! But the guy obviously in control, it's too obvious with his flirty looks oh my!!!,, do you know what I mean!! Am I losing my mind here!!! Cause I think I am!!!!!

Finally!!!
This has one of my top favourite kissing scenes ever!! I forget what other dramas had a good ones that was so intimate and natural and beautifully shot like this one! Mainly because my great great grandfather was a golden fish and I have a terrible memory because of that, and also I've been watching BLs for years so I probably have seen too many good ones to decide!!!
BUT BE THAT AS IT MAY!!! the end of ep10 was spectacular!! *Chef's kiss*

Would I recommend this drama? I don't know, if you are too stressed from work like me just doing it for kicks then yeah, go ahead, it's totally dumb and fun!
If you want something deep and good, please look elsewhere, I don't even know how did you manage to read all that and reach the end of this review and still don't know if you should watch it or not, I probably explained everything right in the beginning... And you probably have too much time on your hands to continue reading 😂 (jk, love U 😘)

interesting Script

My golden blood
Tong needs to work on his acting skills. Ep 1 was just Awkward to watch and unfortunately it continued to the end. I never saw the chemistry between Mark and Tong. They need to find a different pairing.

The storyline itself was interesting and the other actors were convincing and did well in their roles. I would have loved if they expanded on Marks ability to smelling and tasting. noe one seemed to respond or react to it wondering how this occurred or even question what was happening.

Taiwanese dramas always have a way of winning me over, and Fight for You was no exception. This lighthearted and fun rom-com kept me entertained throughout all 12 episodes. The whole dynamic between good guys and bad guys serves as the backdrop for the romance between Da Hei and Xiao Bai. The chemistry between the two leads really worked, bringing to life two incredibly charming characters. Nelson Ji completely stole the show in every scene as the clumsy spy, Xiao Bai. The last two episodes were an overload of cuteness, and honestly, I did not see that plot twist coming, but I absolutely loved it! Da Hei's grandma rules!

Between spies and potential mobsters, love is in the air

After delighting BL fans with the dramas 'Eternal Butler' (2025), 'Unknown' (2024), and 'Stand by Your Side' (2023) as screenwriter; the series 'We Best Love We Best Love: No. 1: For You' and 'We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd', and their respective specials, as executive producer; and the Specials 'Anti Reset Extra Episodes' (2024), 'Stay by My Side Extra Episodes' (2024), 'VIP Only Extra Episodes' (2024), and 'You Are Mine Extra Episodes' (2024) as actress, Cai Fei Qiao offers us, in 'Fight for You' (2025), in her first work as screenwriter and director, a mix of genres that works quite well. Here we have comedy, espionage, drama, and, above all, romance. All this with two actors who will make you laugh and want to visit the stars.
All the genres mentioned in the previous paragraph come together in the relationship between the characters of Andy Ko (Hei Yu Bo / "Da Hei") and Nelson Ji (Bai Zhou Qi / "Xiao Bai") throughout its 12 episodes.
Let's believe for a second that the synopsis of this series doesn't spoil the interesting twist of its premise. Let's admit that the marketing campaign has sold its best secrets without hesitation. What you'll be lucky if you get to 'Fight for You' without any of the spoiled information and you go into it without knowing what it's about.
Two young people land in the middle of a house; each one hopes to get their way and occupy the best room. One of them abruptly gives in. The tenants shout with joy. They now have landlords, and two handsome young men, of course. Their false names protect their complete anonymity.
Through dialogue, brief monologues, precise flashbacks, and specific thoughts, we slowly, unhurriedly, progressively learn their false identities and the reasons for their presence and personalities. It doesn't matter who they were for the moment; we will be able to accept them for who they are now.
This is Cai Fei Qiao's first tool to draw you into her unique game: you will always know that the two of them will not be who they say they are... and we will already know who they are supposed to be.
In this Taiwanese series, built on a foundation of comedy, intrigue, deception, and humor, the romance is evident almost from the moment the two protagonists meet and begin to bond beyond what is advisable in the always dangerous realm of spies and organized crime.
Da Hei, a young man who works at a food establishment with his grandmother Hei Shi Lin (Lam Sau Kwan), is in need of money to cover the medical expenses of his ailing sister, Hei Jia Li (Mimi Shao – 'The On1y One'). Because of this, he is driven to reluctantly join a mysterious "All-Service House", run by his neighbor Dou Ke Yi (Wills Sia), which is under investigation by the intelligence department as a suspected front agency for a crime syndicate. The evidence, though inconclusive, is quite compelling.
Xiao Bai is a member of a famous family of intelligence agents. But his superiors and his own family don't see in him the qualities that distinguish his grandfather and older brother Bai Zhou Guo / "Da Bai" ('Papa & Daddy', 2021).
What Da Hei doesn't know is that his roommate is an undercover spy named Bai Zhou Qi, sent to find evidence linking Dou's business to the mafia. To do so, the clumsy agent resorts to deceiving the gullible suspected gangster, first by posing as a university student named Xiao Bai, then by making him believe he's in love with him and convincing him to fake a courtship between the two in front of Da Hei's grandmother, leading to a hilarious clash of secrets, dangers, and unexpected feelings.
As part of an exercise to reevaluate his work, the young spy must verify, as his grandfather puts it, whether the unsuspecting young man is "a just person or a hostile person".
Xiao Bai will come to the conclusion each day that of the two types of people the elderly secret agent believes exist in the world, Da Hei is of the righteous. But he will need to convince himself first, and then convince the others of this.
What the two don't know is that after completing each tracking and verification mission, their growing dependence on each other will deepen. But how will Da Hei react when Xiao Bai's true identity and mission are revealed? Would you love someone even if you felt like you didn't know them? Would you love someone even if you feel you don't know them?
By the fourth episode, I would like Da Hei to answer yes, if only for the mischief they have experienced together.
The chosen context —organized crime and the possible affiliation of one of the two protagonists— decorates a beautiful, joyful, and fun love story that delves into that which, through deception and impersonation, functions as the true support of relationships: the purest of truths.
Xiao Bai's quest, eager to prove that this truth exists, possesses good pacing and tension, despite lacking impact and surprise. It demonstrates that when the script is well-crafted —although it suffers from exaggerated dialogue— everything flows naturally, leading to a beautiful love affair.
'Fight for You' doesn't reconstruct the spy genre but reinvents it, turning the experience into a tense journey toward a happy ending, accumulating false clues and half-hidden secrets that must find their necessary conclusion.
The series fulfills its purpose of entertaining and amusing, but also of making we reflect on relationships built on the basis of complete ignorance of the other's identity.
Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, some parts are cringe worthy. And yes, the creators of the series know this perfectly. It's full of absurd and exaggerated humor, along with tender and sweet moments, and plots that keep you on the edge of your seat. The result is a heartwarming story that will give you the serotonin boost you need.
Regarding the casting, it's clear that it relies heavily on the roles of Andy Ko and Nelson Ji. It's important to note here that the one who shines the most is Nelson Ji, who makes the series his own from the moment he appears.
This actor, known for playing Duke of Yong in 'The Longest Day in Chang'an' (2019), stands out for the great spontaneity, comic timing, and believability he brings to his character, Xiao Bai. Andy Ko, for his part, is convincing as the naive, grown man who is afraid of cockroaches and is suspected of being a member of a criminal organization; both elements are frequently used to provide humor, intrigue, and suspense.
While the main characters steal the show, a cast of supporting actors enriches the narrative, creating a richer and more engaging story.
Part of the pleasure lies in seeing how all the pieces come together in a seemingly natural way.
And Cai Fei Qiao, with her narrative wisdom, draws you neck-deep into a spy-gang game with such personal nuances that even you'll want to see it end.
The elegant, classic, and calm direction allows the viewer to enjoy themselves, giving them their time and space, allowing them to settle back in their seats and enjoy the delicacy without rushing.
The script is impeccable. Every choice is spot on, nothing is missing or superfluous, everything fits together. It follows its own rules of the game and respects them to the death, like a faithful dog.
It's a strange and surprising series. It summarizes, concentrates, and distills spy and romance cinema while giving it a new lease of life and vigor.
A lighthearted series, intelligent in its exaggeration, beautiful and accomplished, that respects the tradition of the most fantastical and escapist fiction, the most dreamy and unreal.
I'll come back later with the review.

Chemistry

The chemistry between the two leads so far is off the charts! I like that the focus is on the relationship between the characters and not on an “action” storyline. It is refreshing in the same style as the vintage Taiwanese HIS series. The character of Bai strikes just right tone of someone who is learning about life and Hei is absolutely adorable and “quite manageable, even when he is drunk”.
