The Sageuk That Cooked, and We Ate Well

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is a rare feast — a romcom sageuk that knows exactly what kind of dish it’s serving and seasons every bite with care, humor, and heart. What could’ve been just another time-slip fantasy becomes something richer: a story about how kindness, trust, and food can heal the wounds that power and pride often deepen.

At the heart of the story is Ji-yeong (Im Yoon-ah), a modern-day chef who wakes up in the Joseon palace kitchen, and Yi-hyeon (Lee Chae-min), the cold, volatile king carrying a heart full of grief. Their relationship isn’t built on fate or magic, but through meals — each dish becoming a quiet act of care that chips away at his loneliness. What makes the drama stand out is its refusal to exaggerate. It doesn’t need shouting matches or tragic flashbacks to make us feel; it lets simmering emotions do the heavy lifting.

Visually, the series is stunning. Every frame feels like a painting — sunlight cascading over lacquered wood, steam curling in the cold dawn air, and food shot with reverence worthy of a temple offering. The color palette mirrors the story’s tone shifts: warm, golden hues during the kitchen’s laughter-filled scenes, deep shadows when rebellion brews. It’s one of the rare sageuks where visual storytelling alone could carry the plot — you can practically taste the story unfolding.

The sound design deserves just as much praise. This is not a show that relies on its OST alone — it’s a sound-driven experience. The sear of meat, the rhythmic chop of knives, and the hiss of torches become their own language of intimacy. The OST complements rather than competes: I Find You by Doyoung and Stay With Me by Huh Gak highlight the drama’s melancholic heartbeat, while By Chance, By Fate and Kung add warmth and longing in quieter moments. Netflix’s subtitle team also deserves credit for sharp, era-bridging translations that preserve the humor and nuance (“almond/all mend” still makes me grin).

Of course, no meal is perfect. The finale’s “it’s a secret” twist lightly flirts with deus ex machina territory, and the last two episodes compress a little too much narrative into a short runtime. Yet, these are minor seasoning imbalances in an otherwise perfectly cooked dish. The heart of the story never falters.

What truly anchors Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is its emotional thesis: compassion as the highest form of love. Ji-yeong doesn’t save Yi-hyeon through logic or miracles — she feeds him. Each act of cooking becomes a rebellion against cruelty, a declaration that tenderness has power too. When she tells him, “Your pain is my pain, Your Majesty,” it’s not romantic fantasy; it’s empathy distilled into its purest form.

Both leads are magnificent. Im Yoon-ah reclaims her romcom crown, bringing both humor and quiet strength to Ji-yeong. Lee Chae-min, meanwhile, delivers a performance that cements him among sageuk elites — his emotional restraint, his rage, his breaking point — all feel painfully real. His portrayal of a king learning to be human again might just be one of the best performances of the year.

In the end, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty upholds the romcom covenant flawlessly: it makes you laugh, ache, and care deeply. It’s not just a story about cooking — it’s a meditation on nourishment, forgiveness, and trust. It reminds us that love isn’t always about grand gestures; sometimes, it’s just about making sure the other person eats well.

Master chef goes Jeoseon

This is basically Master chef Jeoseon with the usual power struggles on the side. Trying tp answer the ols qwesion can food change the world, make peace in the far east or just change history....

The characters are decently made, lovable, horrible and at times even complexish... The plot is however very repetitive, mouth watering yes but extremely repetitive. The romance between the food and those who taste it shows greater chemistry than between the leads but also feels slightly silly.

The ending has a few to many loose ends and nothing really makes any sense, beside the amount of secound hand embarrassment does get overwhelming at times.

Still there is enough good in it to make me say it is an okay watch, just not very good watch.

Love Both Since Young

BAYM GLOBAL SUCCESS! 'Bon Appetit, Your Majesty' becomes the first Netflix non-original series to top the Global Daily Chart, just after the release of its first 2 episodes, surpassing the currently trending Netflix original series—Hostage and Wednesday.

It reached the Top 10 in 93 countries, Top 1 in 41 countries, and Top 1 Worldwide!

Why wouldn't it be the first in the whole country,
YoonA’s hands got so tanned from all the outdoor filming that even the other actors were shocked. Not only that, but she also had scars and wounds on her hands—probably from the cooking fire show. She’s been working so hard, and I’m so glad her efforts are finally paying off. Our hardworking queen really gave it her all. Keep rising, BAYM 🥺🫶🏻

Warning: It is difficult to see this series on an empty stomach 🚫🤭🤣

I was talking about Korean Series Bon Appetit: Your Majesty!
Time Travel Janara is served more than romance in this ROM. All the great Korean dishes are served. The present-time chef goes to time-time and goes away in the past and falls into the abyss of the autocratic king.
The series, which is based on a bizarre sequel, has been released so far and all the episodes are great.
If you like the Historical ROM-Comcom, this series is interested in mastwatch as well as Korean food and every episode will seem special.

After a long two-year wait, Yuna's new drama has finally been released.
If you like fantasy, time travel and comedy drama, I would say this drama is Bon Appetit Your Majesty for you.
You can say it a beautiful drama by combining how the girl can sustain herself at the past from the present.
Those who are MR Queen Drummer Fen you can see it. I think it will take place on your favorite list.
It was released yesterday and I like it.
In a word, satisfied.
How did everyone feel the first episode? But I feel like Jose. I can't wait for the rest of the episodes anymore. 🥹
My theory: In his point of view and time, she exists, and he fell in love with her. But in her point of view and time, he’s just someone from history. Reincarnation is probably involved in this drama. If the book was written for her to come back, then fate brought them together again, but this time the story focuses on her point of view. The question that will decide whether this drama ends happily is: Does he exist in the present where she belongs?

When he writes the first page of the book titled ‘ Mangurok’, the same book from the future that Ji-Yeong brought vanish. It means that the king was the one who wrote the book, and the recipies inside are the foods that she used to serve him.
So, the part Ji-yeong read in the book that says “May you come back to my side, my love” was really meant for her.
I can really feel the trauma!!! Ottoke 🥹😭😭
#bonappetityourmajesty

The ending might be the same with Scarlet Heart Ryeo, so prepare your heart and tissu.

Episode 4 lost of fun Your Majesty, if you just edited the spelling of what you said, it would be an insult of that level! Just leave out the pasta 😂🤭 🎬 : Bon Appetit, Your Majesty.

Lim Yoona, who we can now see as a chfe . He has trained three months of cooking like Car's Safe for acting in this character. He has also mastered the special French cooking technique called Flambé to do every tactic of the night.
I feel very good to myself know how hard they work to make a character beautiful.
"Bon Appétit, Your Majesty" is not just a drama. This is another proof of its hard work and talent. Of course, it is said that Yona is a very hard actress. I hope this drama is very successful. We have seen four episodes of it in the usual way so far an episode has not even boring to me waiting for the rest of the episode.

Yeahhhh...that's my girl JiYeongah!!! You're from the future...you already know the villain's style....😆😝🤣😂.... I literally laughed hard in this scene..

Fighting....💪💪💪 Show her what you've got... !

Consort Kang threatened Cook Maeng using his mother, warning that if he let Joseon win the competition, she would harm her. So, Cook Maeng purposely cut his hand with a knife to avoid joining the competition. But little did they know, he had secretly trained Gil-Geum on how to cut, chop, and skin with a knife so she could be his substitute. Just look at that proud smile on Cook Maeng’s face after Gil-Geum successfully skinned the duck—their hard work and sleepless nights finally paid off. 🥹❤️ Wala ka na talagang ginawang tama, Consort Kang!

Episode 11 and Episode 12 are making us mentally ill, I can't control my emotion 😭😫
who would have thought that a drama so full of laughter, competition and love in every episode would end in another ktrauma?😭The unwanted finale we wish never to happen.
The 11th episode was too painful to watch.
I just hope Episode 12 will bring some relief.

Will it be a sad ending? Then I'm done. If it's a sad ending, it will take more than 1-2 months to get over it. When I watched All of Us Are Dead, it took me 2-3 months to get over it, I know it's funny to hear but true. Move on from this and watch 5 rom-com happy ending dramas.

‼️ SPOILER ALERT 🫢 ‼️

THE ENEMY HAS BEEN SLAIN, AND WE CHEERED! Finally, Kang Mokju is died and Gonggil finally avenge his sister 🫂👏🏻🥹

OMGGGG!!!!! THE WHOLE TEAM COOK WAS REINCARNATED IN THE PRESENT!!! 😭😳

+ SEONGJAE IS COMING TO THE FUTURE TOO
Finally we are get a happy ending
In the Episode 11, we have to cry worse for our crying, finally the director sir felt that we should be given a happy moment🤭😇
Some things fill your heart with joy, just like the ending of this drama 🥰..I will miss you a lot 💜💜 Drama : bon appetit your majesty

HAPPY ENDING 🥳 🎈
THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THIS MASTERPIECE 😊

Finally I will be able to sleep a little in peace
thanks to everyone for supporting me

The Way To man's Heart its through His stomach... Indeed

Entertaining Entertaining and Entertaining

I believe we don't always need heavy heartwrenching shrewd betrayal Genre all the time,We need some drama too where we can laugh & enjoy the all episode Light heartedly. This drama is that kind of drama. Everything about Food and Cute Romance. There is a saying a to win a man heart we need to go through his stomach. Its living that line.

Cute, fluffy, Funny,Slight palace Conspiracy,TASTY,pleasure to eyes, ---This is enough to describe a Plot just start it if u r in a mood of something Simple.

Actor-- Both lead doing their best same other supporting characters. But supporting character highlight is very less.although i m happy that main focus is on our leads. LCM is wining my heart.

Just go for it without thinking and reading any reviews. If u r a Isekaid/Time travel Manhwa readers then u'll definitely find it worthy and adorable.

LIVING UP TO IT'S NAME (9/12 ep Done)

For those that like beautifully filmed food

I had to wait until it was all released, because a sad ending would have killed me. So much to like-
-Food orgy. Seriously, don't watch it if you are hungry.
-Beautifully filmed.
-ML was excellent. The diversity of his emotions was so stressful to watch, in a good way.
-Yoona did a good job. I'm not normally a big fan, but they took advantage of her beautiful, expressive eyes.
-The kitchen staff - so fun!
-This was a different take on a time slip. I found it interesting.
-The ending was good (but could have been much better with more time and chemistry.)

I scored lower because there were a few things that I didn't like-
-SOOO many bad guys! Silly hats and chin pubes made it hard to keep people straight
-Too much fighting and blood for me.
-too much palace intrigue and not enough romance for me.
-As most K dramas tend to be, I felt that the ending was really rushed.

Refreshing kdrama!

This is definitely my top kdrama of 2025 and one of my favorite historical kdramas!

The visuals were nothing short of fantastic and everyone was well-casted. The male lead is charismatic and paired well with the female lead. I enjoyed seeing them together on screen and the food and sword-fighting scenes. Even the supporting characters shone. The introduction and OST were also great.

Must-watch. It will keep you hooked especially if you like cooking shows. I wish there were more episodes. Can’t wait to see the leads in more dramas!

perfectly cooked drama, served hot by Lee Chae Min

I’ll admit—I almost skipped this one. “Bon Appetit, Your Majesty” sounded like it might be a Mr. Queen knockoff, which is my Top 5 K-dramas till date. Also, having seen the lead actors in previous roles (Lee Chae Min in Hierarchy, the FL in The K2), my expectations were lukewarm at best. But I have it a shot because of Lee Chae Min. Hierarchy was a disaster, but not because of him, and I had felt he had a lot of potential since I first saw him in his minor role in See You in My 19th Life. And I am glad, I watched it. This drama didn’t just exceed expectations—it whisked me straight out of my drama slump and into a 12-episode binge of pure delight. By mid-episodes, I realized this was not only breaking my skepticism but climbing straight into my top dramas of 2025.

Story:
Bon Appetit, Your Majesty has everything a drama lover could want: comedy, romance, action, political intrigue, suspense, and a dash of time travel—all woven together effortlessly. But above all, it's a feast for your eyes and soul, with food taking center stage. If you’re someone who loves culinary competitions like Masterchef or Culinary Class Wars, this drama will tick all the boxes. The way food becomes part of the storyline is brilliant, and the close-ups of the dishes? Tempting! Not only did I get to indulge in a visual feast, but I also learned a ton about French and Korean cuisine! The ending 2 episodes are debatable, as is common with time-slip fantasy genre dramas - you may or may not like it, cause in your head you'd always have many versions of ending. Still, for me it was decent, as it left no loose ends.

Acting:
The entire cast does an excellent job of bringing this world to life. The banter between main leads is sharp, playful & sizzles into romance that is cute & comforting. Supporting characters like Consort Kang (the jealous SFL), King's friend Song Jae (played by the ever-reliable Oh Eui Shik), the royal kitchen crew, and royal staff add flavor and depth. You’ll spot many familiar faces who’ve graced many K-dramas, and they all bring their A-game here.

Show-stealer:
The soul of this drama—or the main dish—is Lee Chae Min. He absolutely owns this role. Whether he’s flashing that playful grin, walking with regal authority, engaging in sword-fighting/archery, crying in anguish or sorrow — he pulls you into every beat of his performance. His chemistry with the female lead is extremely charming & satisfying, giving just enough to ignite all our “delulu” imaginations. His portrayal of the king feels natural and effortless, and his screen presence is magnetic. Even when he was simply standing, or sitting without any dialogues - his aura was amazing, and so were the abs/shirtless scene we get to see. AND DAMN that mouth - every time he tasted the food, his mouth close-up scene made it even more tempting. Thankful to the makers for all these thirst-traps/delulu moment, this woman, loved every bit of it.

If you weren’t already a fan of his, you will be after this. He completely steals the show and I’m glad he chose this project because it feels made for him, and it’s safe to say he’s earned his crown, and I can't wait to see more of him! His character here definitely has become one of my top portrayals of a Joseon kind for sure.

Overall:
If you’re looking for a drama that makes you laugh, gasp, crave fine food, and maybe scream at your screen during those classic toe-curling moments, "Bon Appetit, Your Majesty" should be next on your list. It’s beautifully balanced, endlessly entertaining, and yes—deliciously addictive. For me, it pulled me right out of my drama slump, and that’s the best testimonial I can give. In short: a drama well-cooked and perfectly served, especially by Lee Chae Min!

A fun watch if you are bored

Simply put this drama is easy going, fun and a quick watch, but this truly isn't anything special. The beginning was fun, I loved the cooking scenes, and although the love story starts a bit weird, like you feel apprehensive towards this married kind flirting with a modern cook, but it grows on you. However, this is definitely not one of the best kdramas, let along drama i have ever watched. Watch this as a filler drama in between shows.

A Recipe That Went Astray: A Critique of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty

This past month, the anticipation surrounding Bon Appétit, Your Majesty made for an exciting viewing experience, with many hours spent contemplating the next twist. However, the eventual resolution of the cook’s journey into 16th-century Korea ultimately felt less than satisfying.
The drama followed a familiar K-drama formula: opening with witty, feel-good moments, delving into the protagonist's complicated past, and concluding with a massive, decisive act of justice. While this structure isn't unique, the enchanting chemistry between the King and the Chef, set against a historical backdrop, did successfully recapture the magic seen in previous culinary-historical dramas like Mr. Queen.
The pacing of the narrative was notably uneven. At times, the story crawled to build suspense, yet the final episode felt overwhelmingly rushed, leaving the viewer little time to fully absorb the massive turns of events.
As a viewer unconcerned with rigid factual accuracy—especially in a show where a cookbook serves as a time machine—it was deeply disappointing that Chef Yeon did not leverage her unique knowledge to change the past. The opportunity to expose the true conspiracies orchestrated by Prince Je Seon and his associates was missed, especially since she had already cured the King of his tyranny. A definitive royal marriage and a "happily ever after" would have provided the satisfying dopamine rush that many happy-ending seekers desire. Instead, the screenwriters tried to mystically push the ending as an unexplainable secret.
The series excelled at using the aesthetics of the Joseon period to create a magical atmosphere, but this illusion was ultimately shattered in the finale. It was still a less painful conclusion than Mr. Queen, which left viewers with the anguish of two separated souls across centuries, but the execution was flawed.
Perhaps the showrunners could have benefited from studying the time-travel genre mastery of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, particularly in navigating a historical setting.
On the performance front, Lee Chae-min’s portrayal of the King was superior and more convincing than Lim Yoon-a’s performance, with the stability of the entire story resting heavily on his charismatic shoulders. The chef’s failure to apply her modern perspective to anything beyond her cooking also felt like a frustrating lack of creative ambition in the writing.
Overall, while the culinary competition scenes with the Chinese cooks were the most unique and entertaining element of the show, the drama itself was like a beautiful river that met a rocky, rushed waterfall. It hinted at a happy ending, but fell short of the high standard it had set for itself.

Definitely a 2025 kdrama year defender!

My review begins with bewilderment at those complaining about excessive cooking scenes. Seriously? In a show centered on a chef and her food? The director set the tone, promising food would be the star. And it is! Our female lead, a chef, expresses herself through her craft. She cooks to survive, to charm, to bring warmth, and to uphold her honor. Each episode's title is a different course, mirroring the culinary journey. The food even fuels the romance, as the king finds a new flavor and warmth in her cooking. The show's title, "Bon Appétit Your Majesty," underscores this focus. I'm relieved it stays true to its promise, unlike shows that veer off course. Plus, the food shots are stunning. Let the food be the main character!
***

"Bon Appétit Your Majesty" weaves a tale of a modern chef transported to Joseon-era She encounters a tyrannical king, and their initial clashes give way to a unique bond as he recognizes her extraordinary culinary skills.

This show strikes a perfect balance: the chef's journey as a royal cook, blossoming romance, palace intrigue, and well-placed humor. It's a wholesome blend of elements.

The characters and performances shine. Lim Yoona as Yeon Jinyoung, the time-traveling chef, is a revelation. Her intelligence, wit, confidence, and vulnerability are captivating, as is her passion for cooking. This may be Yoona's best role yet.

Lee Chaemin embodies King Yeon, a tyrant and a foodie. His ability to portray both sides – the domineering king and the goofy food enthusiast – is impressive. His reactions to the food and his struggles with the modern meal names add a layer of complexity and interest.

"The acting is phenomenal, with captivating eye expressions and impeccable comedic timing, bringing the characters to life.

The romance unfolds beautifully; it's subtle yet impactful, as the characters evolve from strangers at odds to a royal chef and king, and beyond. It's a journey built gradually and perfectly balanced, with Lee Chaemin and Yoona's undeniable chemistry enhancing every interaction. Their romance is a captivating mix of star-crossed lovers, a grumpy-sunshine dynamic, and a touch of enemies-to-lovers.

The ending was perfect they met and lived happily ever after, and the details of their journey remain a delightful secret. We're so focused on logic these days, but some stories simply don't need it, and that's okay. This show has serious rewatch potential! The humor, the food, the chemistry between the leads, and the acting were all fantastic. It kept me completely engrossed. I had a great time watching this, and it's definitely making it to my 2025 KDrama year-end list.

Refreshingly Sweet

I love watching cooking shows and a drama that features a female michelin star chef coupled with romance suited my taste. I have not really been a fan of Yoona. I find her acting average, however, in this drama she did a fantastic job with her character. As Ji Young, she was strong, opinionated, saucy, brave and loveable.

I'm glad that Lee Chae Min was a last minute replacement. In spite of the 10 year age gap with Yoona, their partnership worked. Their strong chemistry lit up this drama and gave the viewers a fairy tale romance where the heroine saved the king from the turmoil surrounding his reign. She impressed the king and the court with her culinary expertise introducing cuisine that were unheard of. So much so, that the king decided to write down the recipes she made in a journal. The story surrounding the king's journal was the main plot and I thought it was very entertaining.

The only damper is the 9th and 10th episodes. The cooking competition between the Chef's team vs the Mings was kinda boring. Instead, I would have wanted that that the remaining episodes included how Yi Hoon was able to break the time barrier to be with Ji Young, what happened to the young king. The ending was disappointingly rushed. Still, I would rewatch this drama just to see Ji Young bicker with Yi Hoon, his reaction to the dishes she served him and their love for each other growing with each delicious bite.
