The strength of women

One story split into two parts, this second half that follows Flourished Peony suffers somewhat from contradictory draggy parts and underdeveloped plot lines for an overall uneven effect. The production quality and performances are the same as the first part, but the defects in the story writing become more apparent here. The drama is blend of a serious historical drama with more idol drama elements, and while it may work for some seeking a story about women empowerment, the sometimes lack of realism made it hard for me to fully enter into the drama. Mudan is simply too capable and strong to believe, and blending her story with Jiang Chanyang's more political story elements is a bit awkward at the end, becoming a bit preachy and sentimental.

However, Yang Zi, Li Xian and the rest of the cast put up some great performances throughout, making it worthwhile to finish this story. It is in the more domestic, intimate scenes between characters that this drama really shines. The costumes and sets are lush, and a pretty solid soundtrack accompanies in the background.

Watch this for Yang Zi.

The only good reason to continue watching this is for Yang Zi. The only other reason is to complete the series from Fluorished Peony.

The most envied actor must be Li Xian. Unless there is real life chemistry, there are many instances of sizzling on screen chemistry between him and Yang Zi. The villain serves to irritate more than being hateful. However more irritating than the villain must be the character, Liu Lang

The story tempo changes from draggy to incredulous plot twists. Its literally impossible to die despite the multitude of apparently violent injuries inflicted. Except the last death where a simple stab is adequate.

Honestly... disappointing. I loved the first part so much that the disappointment with the second part just felt that much greater. A lot of scenes no longer seemed even close to being realistic, and the FL's character seemed to have become stagnated and overly saintly. The antagonists also seemed like cartoon versions of themselves with how ridiculous the plot was.

The one thing that really stayed consistent was the chemistry between the two leads. However, this drama is NOT a romance-based drama, so I wouldn't recommend watching if that's what you're looking for. The romance is very much very, very, very slow burn and while I was fine with it in the first part because the plot just felt so much more engaging, I was less fine with it in the second part.

Overall, I think this was a decent watch as a whole but as this was unfortunately separated into two parts, this rating is for the latter part.

When peonies bloom and wither: A quietly powerful sequel

If Part 1 of In the Name of Blossom pulled us in with quiet tension and elegant storytelling, Part 2—Flourished Peony—goes deeper and hits harder. Everything feels richer: the emotions, the power struggles, the subtle moves behind the scenes. It’s the kind of drama that grows on you, slowly but surely.

What makes this part so beautiful is how it uses the peony—not just as a symbol, but almost like a mirror to the characters and their journeys.

🌸 When the Peony Withers
There are moments in the show where things fall apart, and it’s not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it's quiet and painful—like a peony slowly losing its petals.

In life, we see people realizing that their dreams aren’t turning out the way they hoped.
In love, relationships fade, not because of lack of feeling, but because of timing, silence, or pride.
In business, former power players start to crumble—once admired, now barely hanging on.
And in politics, influence can disappear in an instant. One wrong move, and suddenly you’re out of the game.

It’s heartbreaking, but it’s real—and it’s beautifully done.

🌺 When the Peony Blooms
But then... just when things seem like they’re at their worst, the show gives us these quiet, powerful moments of hope. And just like a peony in full bloom, it’s breathtaking.

In life, some characters find new strength and purpose, even after being knocked down.
In love, there’s healing. Not the over-the-top kind, but the gentle kind—through honesty and vulnerability.
In business, new voices rise, showing that being overlooked doesn’t mean being powerless.
And in politics, strategy wins over noise. It’s the patient ones who end up making real moves.

Final Thoughts
Flourished Peony isn’t loud or flashy—it’s smart, emotional, and quietly powerful. It reminds us that things fall apart, but they can also come back together. Like a peony, life goes through seasons: sometimes you wither, sometimes you bloom. And both are part of the story.

If you like dramas that are thoughtful, beautifully shot, and full of layered storytelling, this one’s worth watching.

Tepid

I was eagerly waiting for this sequel to Flourished Peony which I loved, loved. And now, I am pretty disappointed as instead of any character or love story development, the characters are the same, instead of any romantic development, it's just bad guys causing trouble over and over and episodes after episodes. In fact, the FL lead' s character and appearance has become very, very harsh and unlikable. I just finished episode 12 and can only hope that the remainder of the show will become more interesting and softer/romantic. Please don't disappoint your fans who/whom have eagerly been waiting for this sequel. So far, not really great.

Prefacing by saying this is my opinion, giving another opinion to a potential watcher like me. Anyways this was such a terrible disappointment as I’m like the biggest Yang zi fan and everyone was yapping about this is the biggest best feminist drama of 2025. Serious rubbish it’s one thing to carry yourself with grace when facing adversity it’s another thing to bow everytime something goes wrong. Her character was so dull in comparison to everything that happened to her there was essentially no development in like 45 episodes? She would meet this irredeemable piece of trash that tries to end her or her livelihood and then forgive them talking about life is hard? Loool. Her having a woman to woman chat w that princess after she gave her that small punishment for killing that kid she was with and setting her home on fire (the one she worked for like 20 episodes to get) talking bout we don’t need to be like this women should band together is not only poor form it’s actually irritating to watch. Her inability to discard people that were awful and just allowed them to roam around her like she’s some mother thersea was also poor. Her characterisation of the whole yes, people spit in your face but keep turning the other cheek until you have no more skin left is so distasteful. What groundbreaking feminism where people talking about? The conversations that people said where meaningful is literally just common sense. Yes girl, leave the man that has been beating you I have money you have money??? Please it’s truly not that hard idec. There where no actual complex conversation on the oppression of women and if it even went in the direction of looking at the part men play she’d be like “no what men don’t have anything to do with it! It’s this terrible world men have it so hard too 🥺” 😂 as if men in that time didn’t own the world. okay.
Look I tried so hard to get past her lack of spine to maybe immerse myself in the romance? No. The male lead, court jester, town ho* (artificially or whatever) that was constantly running from any type of affection like a woman that had been cheated on by her husband… (I’m saying essentially the roles should have been reversed) making her first his debtor, then his worker, then his maid/slave? (I didn’t get the ownership bit) then his concubine? Actually terrible. The continuous power imbalance combined with his lack of effort to emotionally support her romantically. I mean he goes sour because her brother(?) Returns a broken hairpin signifying the end of a relationship or something… when he knows that guy likes her. The whole thing was actually a hot mess and get this lol all that acting like an irresponsible douche for years didn’t even have him clear the big boss first time they bloody lose? (I read this somewhere lol) So your telling me all that acting like woe is me I get to drink a bunch of alcohol and pretend to screw bunch of women act didn’t even lead up to him clearing the game and uncle immediately they lose? Rubbish. Anyways forget that bit. Whole drama severely overhyped nothing that hasn’t been done before story actually kind of worse than normal lol it was just ragebait the entireeee time if shes not getting beat up she’s getting framed if she’s not being framed her little sister is dying if her friends aren’t dying her father is forsaking her and then her becoming a slave and that, honestly I could go on but you get the gist. And after all this happens there’s not a icing of her demeanour no difference in her outlook no difference in her character no change at all? It honestly felt like propaganda for how women should face oppression. “Ladies ladies you want to be a good woman? In order to be a morally great girl if anyone slaps you 100 times make sure to forgive them 101 and also give them some money on the way” hyperbolic but again you get the gist.
Anyways overhyped, if you’re expecting some nice woman at work sisterhood drama idk mate that’s your prerogative. But watch blossoms in adversity instead she doesn’t get beat every episode.
Honestly really weird this was gassed up so much, a terrible, useless, insignificant and disgusting amount of violence against women like jeez we get it.

A richly satisfying completion of Flourished Peony

A 2025 historical Cdrama which completes the story begun in Flourished Peony, of the love of He Wei Fang (known as Mudan) and Jiang Changyang. 24 eps x 45mins. ea = 18 hrs watch time. This was originally scripted and mostly produced as a grand drama of 56 eps., but as a result of new rules limiting dramas to no more than 40 episodes it was broken into two and renamed. I would advise chunking it up into a few large sections for bingeing which bridge that break.

I have reviewed Flourished Peony separately but to summarize the overall plot: He Wei Fang, the daughter of an apothecary and a peony cultivator, escapes a dangerous and loveless marriage in the provinces with some coincidental help from the Floral Envoy of the Emperor (a part of the Ministry of Rites). He, for his part, was evading a betrothal to a princess (the 'County Princess') who had been the long-time secret and devoted lover of Mudan's husband.

Mudan then escapes her family on her own and, penniless in the capitol city of Chang'an, gathers together capital and loyal associates and recovers her stolen inheritance, her mother's store. ChangYang never forgets her and helps her in hidden ways, since his public persona is of a corrupt and heartless imperial playboy. As they fall slowly in love, he becomes her investor, her friend and eventually her contract-husband in a fake concubinage-marriage.

ChangYang is engaged in a long-term secret and dangerous plan, together with his childhood friend the Emperor, to root out corrupt officials throughout the government. His ostensive patron is the older brother of the Emperor, Prince Ning, who plans to become emperor himself. Prince Ning is the father of the County Princess and the father-in-law of the now humiliated and crippled ex-husband of Mudan, Liu Chang, who has since become obsessed with recovering Mudan, and, in his delusions, his original 'honourable' self. The continuous danger posed by the Ning household's machinations and interventions dogs our couple throughout the story.

This is not a drama for the impatient. The affection of the leads for each other is palpable very early but they have to endure many trials before they can finally confess their love to each other. Never boring, the love between two very strong and independent individuals, separately shaped by their complicated pasts, is masterfully depicted.

Truly excellent cast. Even tho it is such a largescale production, many separate individuals still stand out clearly. This is a powerfully theatrical script and it offers the leads big roles, with subtle emotions and grand gestures. The performances of Li Xian, Yang Zi and Miles Wei were stratospherically good. The Emperor, the Prince, the County Princess, and more, were great.

An original and strong script situated in a really fine, grand production; lovely music, beautiful spectacles, costuming, etc. This is a show to savor intensely, for much more than the central romance and the political intrigue. The depiction of the world of pleasure and entertainment in Tang society which dominates Part One is a treat. Differently so, the well-done high dramatic tone of Part Two is masterful. It manages to weave together poetry, proverbs and political speech (which can be insanely jarring in many cdrama productions) as the fundamental pleasure of the revelation of of the plot's long term developments.

Flourished Peony covers the struggle of Mudan to establish her horticultural business and the evolution of the Mudan's and ChangYang's relationship from patron/client to a more equal and enduring affection. The fragility of the spaces for women of energy and ambition provides much of the drama. Men in the community and in her profession utilize whatever they can to challenge her efforts, for all sorts of reasons, from the personal to professional competition. The County Princess' desperate attempts to recover her husband's love begin to escalate dangerously.

In this second part the very dangerous long-term political project of ChangYang and his friend the Tang Emperor comes to fruition. We learn more about his past through Mudan's increasing knowledge. The romance between Mudan and ChangYang hovers for a long time in the grey areas of an intimate friendship. They pledge their loyalty to each other tentatively, over and over again. When they become lovers it is richly satisfying to see. Li Xian and Yang Zi are veterans of modern cdrama romances and are at ease with the move into physical affection. They are beautiful lovers, and the script takes pains to situate their love in the community that Mudan has built for them. You will absolutely love the ending(s).

And they finally confess....

I fell in love with the first series, Flourished Peony, and while In the Name of Blossom didn’t quite sweep me off my feet in the same swoonworthy way, it’s definitely worth watching. The storyline and cast are engaging, and the scenic visuals are simply breathtaking. The period costumes and makeup reflect the era accurately — even if they’re not always to my taste, I respect the authenticity.

As I dove into the second series, I hoped for that same vibe and punch — and in many ways, it delivered. However, the emotional weight of the plot was a bit too heavy for me to binge in one go. It took me several weeks to finish, as I often found myself pausing and taking breaks. It’s not a drama I could watch in one sitting, but that doesn’t make it any less meaningful.

One of the highlights of the first series was the incredible chemistry between Yang Zi and Li Xian. Their connection was simply over-the-top and never felt forced. Just as before, they nailed the chemistry so well that it felt like they truly loved each other wholeheartedly.

The villain Liu Duan, who played Mu Dan’s ex-husband, was undeniably handsome — and as much as I tried to dislike him, I couldn’t help but be charmed by his performance. Similarly, the princess, played by Zhang Yaqin, who portrayed the villainess, was too beautiful and too sweet to truly hate. Their fate in the storyline was heartbreaking, and I found myself wishing for a second chance for them — even though their characters were ultimately deserving of their tragic ends.

Overall, In the Name of Blossom is a thoughtful, beautifully crafted drama — definitely more of a slow-burn and emotionally intense experience than a quick binge.

Worthy sequel in my opinion!

This was such a worthy sequel in my opinion! I am lucky to have started this right after the first season, that way I was still in the story and just as emotionally invested in the characters. And even though the beginning felt a lot like jumping from one tragedy/obstacle to the next, I really enjoyed the plot anyway. I loved seeing how the leads’ relationship slowly progressed, however, I agree that their development was frustrating. Not too much to irritate me, but … well. S1 did a good job establishing Mu Dan’s and Jiang Chang Yan’s communication skills as well as their tacit understanding of the other. Yet in S2 we see misunderstandings happening that result in lack of/miscommunication, which felt like a cheap trick to force tension and conflict. Did the romance still pay off for me? Yes, but the forced back and forth sure was concerning.

I must command Yang Zi here, of course, because she was such a standout this season again. Her delivery in emotional scenes was insane, and she instantly held my attention🤩. A scene could be tense, and as soon as she opens her mouth, I’d have tears running down my cheeks (looking at episode 19/20👀). Also, the scene in episode 21 when Mu Dan is drunk, dreaming about Jiang Chang Yan, and wondering why she can touch him. What a gut punch… Zhang Ya Qin also pulled her weight even though she disappeared in the middle (?? Where the hell was she), but the confrontation scene in episode 6 with Liu Chang, and her desperation and anger at his relentless pursuit of Mu Dan, was so well done emotionally.

Overall, this season was really nice, and I enjoyed it a lot. It made me smile, laugh, and especially cry! Also, appreciation for She Yan, my fallen lowkey random side character I have some emotional connection to… 🥹💖

Still visually beautiful but takes a freaking nosedive in quality

I was so eager to finish this story. But it bored me to tears that I skipped nonstop. What the heck?!

1. The good:
- The visuals.
- The effortful and mindful Tang elements.

2. The heck:
- FL turned into a Mary Sue. She had Mary Sue's tendencies, but she turned full-on Mary Sue this season with plot armours as thick as the makeup of this whole cast combined! FL can do no wrong. She is smarter, braver, savvier than anyone. [SPOILERS] She needs no saving. Actually, she can save anyone just as she can expand her businesses endlessly and successfully. She's boring.
- ML is kind of a companion but somewhat a simp for the FL also. I have little to no memories of him.
- I don't get the "will they won't they" here. The romantic tension dies down as the season progresses.

3. The bad:
- Wasted potentials on the ex-husband.
- The county princess and her father turned into caricatures of lazily written villains.
- The female empowerment message turned into performative wokeness and propaganda.
- Uninteresting side characters and storylines.
- Flimsy tensions. No real stakes.
- Writing quality drops to hell.

Conclusion: Pretty much a waste of expectations, time and potentials. At least it concluded.

Season 1 was incredible, while this season was just (barely) okay.

Season 1 was, in my opinion, close to a masterpiece. It was so beautiful and well-written. (Maybe I'm reaching a bit far. This is just my opinion, so don't hate on me if you didn't feel the same.)

Season 2, unlike Season 1, was a letdown. The script was chaotic and weird. The characters felt unlike themselves.
The "final battle" was so... interesting, let's say that.

Despite all that, the cinematography, the acting, and especially our main couple, saved this season from being a total disaster.
I'm so, so sad how they handled Season 2. It was disheartening since "Flourished Peony" was my favorite C-drama.

I'll still give this a 7/10 or 7.5/10 for the acting, cinematography, and our main couple. And well, even though the writing felt so messy, we did have some really nice scenes.

Season 1 is a 9/10 or 10/10 for me, though I also understand it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Now, if anyone is unsure whether to watch this after hearing about the negatives this season, I'd still very much recommend it. At least give it a try. :)

Watchable but weak follow-up to the stellar first season

It was a watchable conclusion but I wished that they had removed the plot point where Liu Lang (I’m assuming he is meant to be a teenager) managed to disrupt the progress of Mu Dan and Jiang Chang Yang’s relationship by simply breaking the hairpin and lying. Chang Yang should have already suspected that something was amiss based on Liu Lang’s very obvious bias against him and jealousy of their relationship (Liu Lang had never hidden it prior to this). Mu Dan also should have also given Jiang Chang Yang the hairpin herself. Who gives a meaningful love token to your business partner and friend to pass to your lover? The whole miscommunication plot point was just very annoying to watch.

Also, I didn’t believe that the aftermath of the supposed murder of Jiang Chang Yang was realistically plausible. I knew he wouldn’t have died because Mu Dan had never gone through the panic of wanting to find his body or discover where he might be buried after she managed to escape from Liu Chang’s. They could have added a scene where Mu Dan would be desperately looking for Jiang Chang Yang’s body or grave. It didn’t seem that the thought of looking for his body or grave had ever been written in - if it had been, then it was poor editing on the production team’s part.
