Best Gone Into BLIND

I am not someone who doesn't read synopsis. I am not someone who doesn't watch 500 trailers and read reviews and comments before deciding to start a show. I am basically someone who will already know much of the plot before watching a show or movie.

I am TELLING you, don't DO that with this one... just don't. Don't watch any trailers or read spoilered comments. Even the little bit of synopsis currently on the page at time of writing this is a spoiler.

What SHOULD you know about this show?

Yes, there is romance, but romance is more a product of the show than the PURPOSE of the show. Without the romance the show LITERALLY would not be able to happen as it does as it is integral to the plot, but it's not a "3 dates" type romance where they meet, have a few meetings, confess, and have an ending. Instead, the romance unfolds among misunderstandings, shared history and self-doubts. Turning points happen over issues with trust. Yes, this is vague, I know.

Aside from the romance aspect though there are plenty of themes surrounding: "What is love", "Does not feeling something make you bad", "Women's roles in society run by men", "Whether getting help as a woman from someone who HAPPENS to be a man is disgraceful", "People's roles being dictated by another person". There are two other themes that I feel run the show but mentioning them, while not being "technically" a spoiler, would be a spoiler in spirit so I won't.

If you do not like horror, steer clear as this is VERY horror laced. One minute you will be in feel good land, the next you want a blanket and to turn the lights on. If you find the 1st episodes are NOT creepy then you will probably not find any of the rest. Personally, I am not a horror fan and may be having some nightmares about various aspects of this show.

Above all else... EVERYTHING you are told is true... until it isn't.

High speed non-stop plot twists led by a unique and strong Heroine

Subjective Rating; 7.75

Never heard of “Doppelganger” until my friend mentioned and recommended it. I didn’t read the synopsis or the comments and dove into it blind. She didn’t lie, this drama is full of plot twists left and right. If you don’t pay attention, you might miss it and then it moves on to the next. So much happened in these short 28 episodes, and I needed time to catch my breath.

The best thing about this drama is a strong heroine. This is her story through and through. If you want a smart, grey/red flag, strong-willed, cunning yet caring female lead, you got it. She takes matters into her own hands and is not afraid to use/borrow power for others to achieve her goals. Without giving out any spoilers, “Doppleganger” also has a unique way in the storytelling and execution of this theme/genre that I have not seen before. That is quite refreshing, even if there are some plot holes.

But if you are looking for a strong romance, this is not it. Many mini dramas have a focus on romance and are the main selling point. This drama is not one of them. Though romance is central and important to keep the plot moving, this is not a romantic drama. I am actually quite disappointed in the main romance and don’t see any chemistry between the leads. I may not have second lead syndrome, but the 2ML is a much more interesting character, and this has nothing to do with Chu Zi Jun being more good-looking than Deng Kai. I actually think Chu Zi Jun might have more screen time than Deng Kai.

Despite a strong female lead and the interesting take on this genre, I am not satisfied. I wanted the drama to slow down a little. I’ve seen better mini dramas out there, but “Doppleganger” is interesting enough and actually not too bad as a lower budget production.

Great story, should have been a long drama

I watched this drama for Deng Kai, but got captivated by the story. Unfortunately, the cuts made it hard to follow and the subtitles were really bad (I'm glad I understand a little chinese by now, it helped, without I would have been confused more than once).

This drama should have been a "big" drama with more episodes and a higher budget - and a better hairdresser - but with the same actors. All the leads did an amazing job. It could have been a 10/10 if the screenwriting and cuts would have been more elaborate to make it easier to follow and the budget for costumes, action-scenes and so on should have been higher.

The strong points:
The actors, all if them were great.
The story.
The ending, which made me want to rewatch it all over.

The weak points:
The cuts, it was sometimes hard to know when and where we were.
For the non-chinese-speaking audience: The subtitles, they were just bad (they should be redone)
The hairdresser should be fired. What was that disheveled hairdo Deng Kai hat to put up with during his captivity-fighting??? I just can't get over it, I almost stopped watching as it wad ridiculous.

All in all it's really worth watching, even though I can't give more than 7,5 due to the points mentionned.

A Wild Card in the C-Drama Deck

This drama is unconventional — not your pastel-filtered “la vie en rose” story, not even close. And that’s exactly why it stands out. Special shout-out to fellow viewers who said go in blind; they were absolutely right. The less you know, the more you’ll savor the ride.

At its core, the show tackles concepts that linger in your mind long after the credits roll. The characters are compelling, especially the female lead — she is the living embodiment of “taking matters into your own hands.” Her performance is great; I rooted for her every single step. Honestly, Episodes 1–10 could work as a standalone drama — tightly written, intriguing, and brimming with energy. Add in the main leads’ backstory and some memorable supporting characters, and you’ve got plenty to keep you hooked.

But let’s be clear: if you’re here for a sweeping romantic saga, this may not be your fix. Yes, the leads’ romantic feelings drive an important part of the story, but romance isn’t really the point (and as someone who proudly lives for romance plots, I’ll admit it was one of the weakest aspects for me).

Of course, it’s not flawless. Plot holes? They’re everywhere. It often feels like the writers asked themselves: “How many twists?” — “Yes.” And when it came to logic? — “Sorry, out of stock.” Add in shaky subtitles that tripped me up a few times, and you might find yourself constant;y muttering, “What in the carnation fluffy mushroom begonia dream is going on???”

Yet, despite all that, the originality wins. I genuinely can’t say I’ve ever seen a plot like this before. It’s messy, bold, and intriguing in ways I didn’t expect. If you’re in the mood for something different — unconventional, imperfect, but wholly worth the ride — this drama is one to check out.

Rating: 10/10 – A True Gem That Deserves More Attention

This drama deserves a solid 10. The storyline and concept are exceptionally well-crafted, focusing on the female lead’s unwavering determination to chase her own happiness—defined not by love or external validation, but by her quest for freedom. Her journey of self-love and resilience is both inspiring and relevant, reminding us that in today’s world, it’s essential to be kind to others while not forgetting to care for ourselves.

The acting was impressive. Both the male and female leads are seasoned artists, and their experience clearly showed in the way they brought depth and nuance to their characters. The chemistry was mature and realistic, which perfectly suited the tone of the drama. The female lead was not only stunning but also incredibly versatile in her performance. The male lead portrayed his role with sincerity and expressive subtlety.

A special mention goes to the second male lead—his innocence and charm fit the role beautifully. He was not only handsome but brought a fresh, heartfelt energy to the screen that made his character stand out.

Despite being a low-budget production, the director managed to deliver an engaging experience. The sound effects were thoughtfully placed, though there was room for improvement in that department. However, what truly carries the drama is the strength of the script. Had this been a high-budget film with top-tier marketing and big-name stars, it might have been a nationwide sensation.

Still, what makes this drama special is its honesty and soul. It’s a beautifully told story that is both entertaining and emotionally moving. Don’t miss it—this is a hidden gem that truly shines.

Go in blind, walk out seeing everything.

I finished this drama awhile ago, yet I can't stop thinking about it. The acting, the *story,* the themes, the plot twists that actually mean something (not just dropping bombshells for attention), and the inevitable ponderings it leaves you with are not to underestimated.

For one thing, this is a drama that highlights disadvantaged notions. From beginning to end women's difficulties in society are on full display. Mental illness in a rather unique form is excellently executed by one of the actors, leaving the viewer with philosophical and ethical questions for themselves. Also our roles in society, especially "caged roles," and how unsafe it can be/feel to ask for help and the parts we play in that.

My favorite theme is "does being good?" get displayed through your feelings, in your actions, or by what you believe in? It's a constant battle every single character is struggling to win with themselves. All displayed so differently. Profound, glorious, and sometimes tragic. Beautiful.

I can't really say anything more without spoiling this drama. Don't be put off by reviews/comments saying there's not really romance (but the romance that is there is a driving point). If you're a romance person you'll like your payoff. I can't list the genres without spoiling anything. But there are additional genres. And it's fantastic. Please just watch this. It'll blow up your world.

It's best gone into blind, as every reviewer and commenter mentions. This isn't a scare tactic, it's to treat you.

This is truly a gem.

P.S. I mean, I love Deng Kai. He's a solid actor who did an excellent job in this and he wasn't even the best part of Doppelganger. WATCH IT.
