Kind of similar with kdrama style makjang drama but without major spicy scene

Editing issues discussions overshadow the overall plot and character design a little bit too much, watching it after the promo truly gives a better personal experience. Given the stressful and packed nature of each episode, binge-watching it all at once felt more satisfying than watching it ongoing. The bgm is often distracting in many places at the beginning. Idk if it bcs i already too familiar with the blinding lighting in many dramas, i’m kinda used to it. They portray the characters’ actions as always shaped by how life influences them, they always have their own stance, including the villains. The villains didn’t just get a redemption arc simply because they showed a little kindness. I love how many subtle contexts are implied in various dialogues, actions, shots, and gestures. Though I thought many shots ended too quickly without giving me proper time to digest them, it gives me tiny new flavors when i rewatch it. This is the drama that got me into C-dramas!!!

At first, I started watching it because Wang Churan is insanely beautiful, but I ended up falling for Zhang Linghe instead! Their visuals are absolutely unreal. They look SO GOOD together!

The story is quite heavy, and the pacing in episode 1 is a little slow, but from episode 2 onwards, I literally couldn’t stop watching! The storyline is SO GOOD and feels so refreshing compared to the usual C-dramas with predictable, overused plots.

Their chemistry is SO GOOD! People who say they have no chemistry must be blind haha, I even fell in love with how whipped Murong Qinyi is for her!!

You guys need to watch this drama! Zhang Linghe is so handsome, and OMG, his acting!! I’m officially obsessed. I literally can’t move on from this drama😭

I really hope this couple gets cast in another drama together in 2027! PLEASE, PRODUCERS, GIVE US ANOTHER PROJECT WITH THESE TWO! WE NEED THEM TOGETHER AGAIN!!

MY OPINION BTW

this series isn't bad but i wouldn't say it's good either, really wouldn't recommend first time cdrama watchers TT^TT

first of all, the use of ai in this drama istg it pops up and pisses me tf off, they didnt even hide it well. second of all, this was my most anticipated drama for the year btw, and it disappointed me so bad it actually hurts. the fact that the pictures from when they were still filming was godly gorgeous, the visually chemistry was beautiful and ik that the actors/actress here CAN ACT, oh my god I'm livid. it took me three tries to pick this drama up, the quality just looked cheap to me, it pisses me off. I only pulled through because of linghe and churan such a good cp istg.

Let me just say i have a fucking huge problem with the director and the editor. they just be playing in face istg, im so mad. like the angles was shit (linghe diving scene), overuse of ai, so many closeups, like i don't mind close ups but they gotta chill on that. i just think some scenes can be filmed much better and creatively/intimately (filming just a touch by the hand can be way more intimate). there's so much ways to express yearning in film!...Also, the editing style i hate like its so noticeable to me when they transition to a scene to another. And they need to chill on the music. Music gives more impact if used limitedly and decisively.

Moving on whatever, ignoring the ai and the fucking cheap quality, the plot/concept was sooooo fucking GOOD to me it pisses me off even more because of the delivery. I can't.... like they had good plots but so little character developments. The revenge plot is so GOLD like wdym trafficked girls in an organization to get revenge!!! amazing concept but i need them to actually be powerful, i need them deadly if they're rigorously trained like "my journey to you" type. they had the fang's money resources and should've showed that more... i wanted them to expand on women empowerment.. this plot was so good im so upset..

I wanted qingyi to be idk maybe more stronger if he survived and trained all that while also going to war why does it feel like he get beaten up so often. i get that he was traumatized but it didn't truly felt like he overcame his fears, everyone can just trample on him. like for what he went through i wanted him to have more..

Both of our main characters actually had such GOOD backstory like I pity both. I love the push and pull so much. i love the betrayal and such but the toxicity is so forced like please, chill.....but what upset me even more is why do the writers felt the need to separate them time and time again when they had the capability to actually work together join forces be a power couple.

I don't need a repeat of what happened!! I NEED PROGRESS. there was like two separation arcs, the first one is enough just build on it and tie it together! i don't need another revenge plot introduced if the first arc isn't properly tied together.
and also i don't need a villain not really villain character here, so many shit happening and its adding ontop of each other.

I think its also missing that buildup, that shock factor, or hit viewers unexpectedly because it kinda gave again repetition, and like viewers already expected it. Everything is all laid out.

I really mourn for the potential in the plot because that's what got me through the end. it's interesting and had the potential to be one of the best republican drama. the performances on the acting was good as expected from the actor/actresses, i just felt like because of the editing style its choppy and stiff which hindered their full performance, i bet the raw footage must be more impactful than how the editor dissected this drama.

Everything aside, i love both characters. life was too cruel to only them. i pity both characters so much. i needed a breather because their story was actually depressing to me, i feel for them so much. For them so simply wish for a simple life, it made me cry so bad.

I dont get why people dislike this drama so much?

Honestly, I really don't get why people rate this drama so low. I really thought the acting was genuine, and the action was very enticing. I didn't really notice the AI or CGI and this really looked really cool. The actors are also really popular, so it was fun seeing them act in a different style. When I watched the first few episodes, I thought the drama was going to be rated at least a 8.5, but I never imagined that the drama would go from 7.5 to 7 to 6.5 to 6.7. Honestly, I really saw how much effort was put into the acting, the desperation and the emotion was written across their entire faces. I also really enjoyed the OST: Entangled by Na ying. The lyrics to that song is insane. It perfectly describes what they experienced, and the vocals were amazing. My mum didn't like it that much tho.

However, I do agree that the betrayal from Rensusu (Wangchuran) was a bit OTT. Like pretending you were dead is bad enough isn't it? But then you go on the get engaged to his brother and then tell him you hate him, you even betray him again and again, telling him you will go together but then pretending to get married with his brother and accidentally killing his brother, and even hiding his own child from him, and yet he still has unwavering love for you. But I guess yeah, eventually she proves that she is loyal to him, and in his most brutal days she is there for him. When he was captured and beaten almost to death, she protected him and it cost her hearing in one ear. When he was publicly humiliated, she was there for him and she slapped the person across the face.

Another frustrating thing was, Murongqingyi (Zhanglinghe) was also at fault. Throughout the whole drama, I just prayed that they would sit down at a table and tell eachother exactly what they went through in the time that they were apart. She did it to protect them, as she is part of an illegal organisation which takes down criminals, and he was abused, then falsely sent to prison, where they severely tortured him and even severed his hand tendons. They only found out abt these things later on, when it was slightly late. They didn't even get the happy ending they deserved.

Really thought this drama was good, you should deffo rethink the rating given. Bravo, actors!

what a rollercoaster ride it was lol. it felt pretty slow in the beginning and honestly i found it a little boring at first. but as the story progressed, i slowly became more intrigued and invested in what was happening.

that being said, there were a few things that didn’t feel very realistic to me. one of the biggest things was how even after so many years had passed, there were barely any changes in the characters’ appearances. it made the whole story feel like i was still stuck in the same timeline. towards the end, i also felt like the plot became quite rushed and the ending wasn’t as satisfying as i had hoped. but i guess it is what it is 🤷🏻‍♀️

overall, i still enjoyed watching it! but would i rewatch it? probably not haha

Surprisingly, I miss this after finishing it weeks ago so here I am

First I have to say: This is the first ever review I write here because I think it deserves to be given a chance (only if you like heavy angst tbh)
I thought this is just a bad drama at first, but I wanted to give it a chance regardless, even when I finished it and was in so much pain, but as I actually let some time past I missed it? there were definitely some scenes I loved, and there was some fresh vibes that is hard to get in other dramas, I skimmed through the nonspoilery reviews before watching and I expected it to be awful, but actually it wasn't that bad after I sat with it!?
it helps that I wasn't on online hype train before it came tho, just watched it out of curiosity and did have an emotionaly rollercoaster time with it.
I usually start republic era dramas and never finish them, that's why I still wanted to give this a try to see if I just don't like the era or there's a chance I will enjoy it, this was the first one that actually made me watch till the end.
Now onto the actual quality:
one thing I didn't see in the reviews is the talk abt action, come on the action was actually pretty good! even tho I did wonder how the hell QY was able to perfectly fight with anything despite being a doctor lol, IK he was in prison and all but anyways, the action really had good choreography for the whole drama tbh.
the music composition itself was SO GOOD, I love the OSTs of this drama, part of why I keep missing it after weeks of finishing it is the OST, both the vocalized songs and the instrumentals, I even added them to my playlists to listen regularly, however, yes there are times the editing on the drama is bad and they're not using the amazing OSTs well.
and on the characters, I think everyone can say the focus of the character writing was really qinyi, he grew well despite all the bad treatment, I think they did want to signify that bad treatment shouldn't justify a person with questionable choices or sth, bc they kept paralleling Qingyi with others over how everyone is miserable but chooses differently. Susu tho..... most of the time I'm just shouting in my head "GIRL WHY". Granted there are usually reasons but a lot of times it's just for the sake of hurting Qingyi and audience let's be fr lol
the script writing was definitely one of the weakest parts of the drama tho, yes I agree with most of the reviews, it had so much potential and they could deliver the same story and events with a better execution, I wouldn't even say the plot is bad, no the concept and plot are also part of the potential, it's mostly the execution of the story that is oscillating between decent and terrible throughout the 40 episodes.
Personally for me it was like this:
first few episodes -> too tropey... as if they literally tried to put all the sloppy fanfictions tropes of love-hate into it.
around the middle 10 or so episodes where they move actual high stake plot -> wait it actually got good!?!?
the transition between first arc and second arc (the 6 years jump) -> ....... sloppy writing.....
towards the end-> ?!?!?!?!!? WHY IS IT SUDDENLY SO TRAGIC
you could have done well with less self-sacrifice advertising please...... T_T

All in all tho, if you do like angst (and can handle miserable sad lives) this does deserve a chance.
PS: if you liked banana fish the anime despite how shitty ash's life is, you probably will like Murong Qingyi's suffering too (you probably are a masochist like me lol).

*Overdo* is one of the best romance C-dramas I've watched. The emotional angst, yearning, and forbidden romance were beautifully executed, making it impossible not to root for Ren Susu and Murong Qingyi. Their chemistry was incredible, and every sacrifice, reunion, and misunderstanding carried real emotional weight. Murong Qingyi is easily one of my favorite male leads—devoted, protective, and unforgettable. The only reason I didn't give it a perfect 10 is because a few plot points felt slightly rushed and it was clear that AI was used making it a low budget release. Other than that, it was an emotional roller coaster that I'll definitely remember for a long time.

Did they choose the wrong FL?

The drama should come with a health warning. It is draining on mental health and creates a negative & depressing emotions. In the age where political conflicts are happening all over the world, we do not need more angst & anxiety in our entertainment. I have nothing against the FL but like all her other dramas, FL can't act. She is stone faced and wooden in every expression except the crying and smirking. She spoils the show; just like she spoiled the "Fireworks of my Heart" with her bland & boring acting. The storyline is not bad if they had a better FL. Absolutely no chemistry between the two leads. Also, is it necessary to have so much makeup on! The eyeliners are so visible, especially in the ML, that they stood out more than the drama & the FL! Overdo? They should amend the title to Overdone (by eyeliners)!
