Another Kdrama ending

Aaaaand once again
The curse of the Kdrama ending ! An ending that is not an ending, so many questions and the famous "THAT'S IT ?????" yelled in front of the TV

The drama was great, the actors are all amazing, the credibility was on point... but ! We are missing three episodes to this thing. It looks like it ran out of budget which is too bad cause it was great. Watch it but be prepared for a disappointment in the end...

They got lost in the genre

In 12 episodes you'll see: Drama, family, romance, violence, laws, Melodrama, corruption and some other genres.

But for me, they wanted to put all the genres together, but they didn't focus on any of them, but rather brushed them up. It seemed to me that drama was everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

The stories in each chapter were well developed, but the overall story seemed to me that none of them were properly developed as a whole and this don't give me satisfation.

I didn't know what to expect when I started watching, but I was a little disappointed. I would have liked them to develop the main stories as they did in the chapters.

Beyond the bar but not really

I liked the series overall because of the story it had a lot of compelling cases and they did a good job in showing them in each episode. I knew not much going in, but I kind of had the impression there would be a love story—I saw the chemistry between the leads. I was excited because I really liked Jung Chae-yeon from Family by Choice, she was the only reason I wanted to see this show and she did not disappoint—her character had such an interesting backstory I wished they’d spent more time. I think the show did a good job in slowly revealing parts of her character that’s what kept me interested—the overall story with her mom was heartwarming and knowing now that her mom separated her from her twin because of her hearing loss was a compelling arc for the mom too. At first I was hesitant to like the mom but they did a good job in concluding her arc in a resolution especially the final episode it was really heartwarming.
Definitely the best story was from the second leads, Heo Min Jeong and Lee Jin, they were so adorable and the story of Min Jeong and her backstory was really compelling and heartwarming I liked that the show focused on who she was to see her evolution to the present—especially because she is introduced as a stong, confident and fashionable. Again each episode introduces layers of all the characters although I think we spent the majority of the time focusing on the law firm’s politics which was a bit boring and out of sight at times—I would much rather spent times looking at the characters especially since they are a major part of the cases they take on. The politics of the law firm was like I said boring and it really didn’t make sense why it was introduced and why so much time was spent on it ughh it frustrated me so much.
Overall the drama had a lot of potential but I think there should have been more focus on the main characters and the cases instead of the politics of the law firm (AGAIN so boring). I also think they did a disservice to the supporting cast in the first 4 eps they introduced all of them well but then we kind of stopped thinking or showing them and then they just appeared again towards the end. To be honest I enjoyed the ride this show had, the cases where compelling and heartwarming at times it introduced new ideas and the characters shows very logical ways of thinking especially when it comes to laws, I think that’s why I like it because of the unique perspective the personalities were very direct. liked the show it was a fun watch!

Gaslighted

We were GASLIT. Tell me why you would make your FL obsessed withe ML and have the ML show his feelings for her through his actions throughout the entire show for it to end without a even a HFN!

The secondary couple, who, BTW came out of NOWHERE gets to have a HEA and the main leads get NOTHING!

I was absolutely blindsided by this show, every week waiting with bated breadth, thinking this is the week they'll kiss or say how they feel about each other.... how naive was I.

It hurts because everything else about this show was literally PERFECT.

I really feel that this has to have a second season the way this ended... like... I am not okay after this :/

Incomplete / Rushed ending

The drama started off on a promising note, with an engaging premise and enough intrigue to pull viewers in. In the initial episodes, the pace felt lively and the story seemed to have the potential to deliver both heartfelt moments and engaging character development. However, as the episodes progressed, the excitement started to fade. By the end, the storyline had become repetitive and rather dull, making it difficult to stay invested.

One of the biggest letdowns was the chemistry or rather, the lack of it between the lead couple. Their interactions often felt flat, and instead of sparking excitement, their conversations dragged on to the point of becoming monotonous.
Surprisingly, the second lead story was much more engaging. Their arc carried more depth, warmth, and emotional pull than the main couple. Many viewers might find themselves more invested in the second leads than in the protagonists, which speaks volumes about the imbalance in storytelling.

Another major drawback was the unresolved plot regarding the four attorneys. A big part of the narrative involved their journey and struggles to secure a permanent position, yet by the conclusion, the show left this aspect hanging without closure. This incomplete development made the ending feel rushed and unsatisfying.

Love is esquire & Missed opportunities

The whole objective of the series is this:

«Love is esquire»

"Esquire" is used here in the context of young lawyers who are still learning the ropes. It is similar to old English "squire" (there's an etymology connection there).

"Love is esquire" means that love is an endless process of learning, just like an esquire must always learn to become better lawyers. (Or a squire to become a knight.)

No matter what form love takes, «love is esquire».

---

The show also missed many opportunities. Some of these are:

- developing the story of the FL's mother
- a story about the FL's twin sister who is hard of hearing
- a case related to PWD rights, especially one related to the FL's twin sister, and her aunt's PWD family
- building more on animal rights
- exploring deeply the various forms of marriages
- how marriages are broken
- the bond between a human and their pet

There were a lot of relevant topics they could've delved on deeper instead of simply using them as a plot device. It was a waste, especially in the context or objective it set itself: Love is esquire.

A legal drama that pleads its case but refuses a verdict

When I first pressed play on Beyond the Bar, my expectations were decidedly modest. Yet episode by episode, the series drew me in, not only through the depth of its performances, but also via the intriguing legal cases and the quietly simmering romance between its leads. The glances, the silences, the near-telegraphed complicity: all suggested a love story unfolding in slow motion.

To be clear, I would have had no qualms had the series chosen to forgo romance altogether. But once a narrative dangles breadcrumbs, once it invites us to imagine a possibility, it cannot simply turn its back on that promise. The ending, with its abrupt refusal to acknowledge what had been so carefully planted, proved a bitter disappointment. It is a peculiarity of certain K-dramas to veer into endings that feel closer to tragic Russian cinema of the mid-20th century, inconclusive, open-ended, almost wilfully opaque. Sometimes such ambiguity is refreshing, but here it felt like a betrayal of the emotional contract established between script and audience.

This unease was compounded by a certain narrative convenience. Many of the cases, while initially engaging, demanded a suspension of disbelief so great it verged on indulgence. Too often, courtroom conflicts seemed to echo the protagonists’ emotional states with uncanny precision, a structural coincidence that strained credibility. Moreover, the FL’s tendency to disclose work details to friends was ethically implausible, not to mention legally questionable in many jurisdictions. It jarred in the same way as imagining a psychiatrist recounting patient histories over drinks, or a head of HR casually relaying dismissal details at lunch.

Then there is the matter of communication, or lack thereof. The ML’s backstory with his ex-wife, in which a seismic personal decision was apparently never discussed, rang hollow. Are there marriages that implode in silence? Certainly. But the notion that a high-profile lawyer, whose career depends upon words and negotiation, would never articulate his grief or reasoning to his spouse felt dramatically thin.

The secondary couple, though popular with some viewers, barely registered for me, consistently overshadowed by the leads. The closing shot, marked with the cursive "Esquire," fails to deliver closure, leaving viewers with a lingering sense of incompleteness.

The series’ main flaw lies in the director’s uncertainty over the romance, which created a tonal imbalance and left a promise unfulfilled. Yet the leads’ compelling performances carry the drama throughout. Would I welcome a second season? Absolutely. Likely? Uncertain. The series offered the carrot, only to hand us a handful of weeds.

Beyond the Bar delivers strong performances and gripping storytelling, yet its open ending leaves a sense of incompletion. After investing in the characters and their journeys, one can’t help but wonder: can leaving a story unresolved ever truly satisfy the audience? In this case, the answer feels clearly… no.

Beyond Good and Evil

Sometimes there are just dramas that catch you by surprise, and you end up completely obsessed with them. Beyond the Bar, with its not-so-typical, approach to the topic, was one of those for me.

Story:
I really liked how the cases were handled here. They weren't black and white – it wasn't just about defending the innocent in the name of justice. Sometimes you end up defending someone morally questionable, sometimes someone who's flat-out wrong and shows no remorse, and sometimes the case itself makes you question your own values. That variety made each episode feel fresh. Not every case was perfect, and some might come off as problematic, but that's exactly why I enjoyed it so much – it offered multiple perspectives instead of sticking to one formula.

At times, though, I felt some cases leaned more on the "message" than on fully coherent reasoning, but isn't that kind of how law itself works? In the end, it all comes down to the verdict.

I also have to admit that Yullim's internal conflict subplot didn't really grab me. It wasn't bad, but compared to all the interesting court cases, it just felt a bit... generic.

The characters were the biggest surprise for me, mainly because after the first episode, I didn't expect to like so many of them. Our main duo? Fantastic. Their relationship developed so naturally, and their little night tea chats felt almost therapeutic. The second leads? I honestly couldn't wait for their scenes (even if at times they felt like Kopiko ads...). Special mention goes to the FL's friends – their screentime wasn't huge, but I still ended up really attached to them.

Acting:
I'm really proud of Jung Chae Yeon for this one. I've enjoyed her in other shows, but this is the first time she genuinely felt like a strong part of the cast and not just an accessory for others. I'm not the biggest fan of Lee Jin Wook, but he also did a solid job and really fit the character. The supporting and guest cast also deserve a big shoutout – their performances really filled out the show and made each case even more engaging.

Technical Aspects:
Really good overall, though it's basically your standard high-quality kdrama production – polished and pleasant to watch, but nothing you'd exactly rave about. That said, there were some fantastic music placements in the first half that gave certain scenes a very cinematic feel. Sadly, that faded a bit in the later episodes. Also... that fat suit was really not it.

Entertainment Value:
Pretty high. I really looked forward to new episodes, and even on days when I thought, "meh, not really in the mood today," the moment I hit play I was instantly pulled in.

Overall:
I'm honestly impressed by what a pleasant surprise this drama turned out to be – especially considering I barely paid it any attention at first and even skipped it during premiere week. The cases weren't always black and white, and the overall quality stayed consistent from start to finish. It was flawed in some areas, but equally satisfying in others.

A Must Watch!!

I’m only 4 episodes in to this drama and it’s a 10+++. Every episode so far captures your interest in such a special way. The title of each episode provides a brief snapshot of what is coming and then delivers so well when you watch it. I hope this series continues to shine and excite its viewers with its outstanding storylines and acting. The characters’ development is also so well done by giving us a closer glimpse into the main leads’ backgrounds, peeling the onion further in each episode. I’m loving this drama more after each episode as a result. I can’t wait to watch what’s next. ❤️🤗🫰🏻

Low expectations but it surprised me

I was a little hesitant to start this drama because recent Korean legal dramas this year was just so not my cup of tea, unlike before. When I tell you, episode 1 really lured me in. I was hooked, I experienced the thrill, the engaging emotions and all that, I was greatly impressed! I did not expect to like it very much either. I would easily put this in my top 5 Kdramas of this year! While it did it get rough for me in the middle of this drama and some cases I did not like, every episode was still so unique and will really catch your attention. There's a slow burn romance but I thought it was paced perfectly given where the characters started, their work relationship, and how much time they have actually spent together, it felt very natural in it's progression. Good is an understatement for their chemistry, it was simply off the charts!

More often than not I enjoyed this drama, and overall it's worth the watch. It was very well executed and well acted, kudos to the director on this one.

Beautiful. I just wish they hadn't left us hanging at the ending.

Quote 1:
--------------
I think marriage is built on love. Over time, that love just changes shape.
Love between a couple, starts with passion, goes through reality, and ends in solidarity.
Losing passion, doesn't meant losing love.
Solidarity, loyalty, belonging.
They're all just different forms of love.
- Yun Seok Hun (Episode 12)

Quote 2:
--------------
If love is about looking at each other, Marriage is about looking in the same direction.
- Yun Seok Hun (Episode 12)

Quote 3:
--------------
Marriage isn't the process of culmination of love, but the process of exhausting it.
- Kang Hyo Min (Episode 12)

Quote 4:
--------------
Some love stories are epic tales and some are short stories.
Just because you wrote a short story doesn't meant it's a failure.
It means that one book has ended. You need to write another one.
One with a passionate romance.
- Kang Hyo Min (Episode 12)

The writer did such a beautiful job on the entire drama, but most specially the ending. The 4 quotes I shared are some that resonated with me as I watched the final episode.

Although many dramas were airing, at the time, this is the one I looked forward to the most every weekend. I found everything about it appealing, the actors, the characters, the storyline, the production, and the setting.

It is going on my rewatch list, I just wish they hadn't left me hanging because I desperately wanted them to have a start and things did look promising but I need more!!!!!

This reminds me a little of Judge Vs. Judge. If there's a season 2, I'll watch, but it's highly unlikely.

I'm so sad that this only had 12 episodes.

Life isn't black and white; it's a million shades of grey, even CASES!

A legal drama that would continuously test your morals/ethics. Its makes you debate with yourself. Its more about the grey part rather than the black or white. With great dialogues, unique cases, admiration between leads, learning lessons, the drama would grapple your heart. Its not based on romance, but there are some heart fluttering moments. I consider this the most well written Korean drama in recent times, and best legal drama out there.
