Literally BEYOND THE BAR

Is this a legal drama?? Yes it is, but so far beyond any normal legal drama. This is not your typical legal drama. It is more emotional and deep.

The cases shown in each episode is really complex and gripping at the same time. Not at all like the usual legal drama cases. The grey cases show the complexity of relation between law and moral values. The actors did a very good job and it felt very natural and satisfying. Characters were very solid and interesting. Dynamics between the characters and chemistry between the actors was really amazing. The drama portrayed different forms of love and also showed deeper and different meanings on love. Not even a single episode felt boring, it was really interesting to wait and watch the next episode. The drama’s overall pacing was also really good.

It could have been a 16 episode drama, and I seriously hope for second season. Overall it was a very amazing watch. Solid 9/10.

Let's keep it short shall we?

A brief summary...

Beginning: 10/10
Middle:10/10
Ending: 3/10

For such a well rounded show, the ending was quite disappointing. Overall, it's a great show and I recommend it.

Pro-tip: don't get too attached to the dog. We don't know what happened to him at the end.

Happy watching 🙂

What is Love?

All I thought was this drama will be that typical mentor-mentee relationship where he teaches then she learns. It did happen but it was more than that. Hyomin and Seokhoon learned, and consoled each other as their journey goes.

"Love comes in many different shades. and that love hurts people. Once that wound festers, they consider legal action. At that breaking point, they believe their last resort, the lawsuit will protect their happiness and their right into it."

The quote is how this drama got me. What love really is? As cases were presented per episode, love was introduced in a variety of shades. Whether that is infuriating, touching, annoying, or beautiful.

I fell in love to Jung Chae Yeon's acting through this. Probably, my favorite performance of her among the ones I watched so far. One thing I hoped for is that the it would be more perfect if the other characters plots were more explored.

++ I love the OSTs. They're my cup of tea.

Loved it except for the ending

This show was actually really captivating for me. I usually get bored watching this type of drama, but the way they paced the story and character development always had me wanting to watch the next episode. I loved how the FL was more of a strong, independent, competent person instead of a damsel in distress. I think this type of role suits Jung Chae Yeon really well, I'd like to see her in more of these types of shows.

When watching most dramas, I end up cringing or getting angry at the character's actions or terrible humor. This show, being a more serious type of show, I enjoyed it a lot more. All the characters made rational decisions and acted like normal people. There were no overused cliches.

What I didn't like was the ending. I felt there was no closure. The last episode felt very rushed in terms of story progression- too much happened at the very end. I almost feel like it needs another season to properly explore all of the character's stories. It also felt a bit repetitive with it essentially being a case per episode, but I guess that comes with being a lawyer drama.

Overall, a very good production. Loved the actors and the writing, it did a great job differentiating itself from other dramas. I would absolutely watch another season of it.

Great Watch !!!

I just wish they had a little more to the ending like the chemistry between the main leads was lit i guess that made me want a bit more definitive end for them . Normally not a huge fan of big age gaps but this was done just right ,their interactions felt genuine and heartwarming . The side characters too were really good and one thing I'm especially glad about is the fact that they did not add meaningless evil characters just to add stupid rivalry and misunderstandings .

A Somber Legal Drama That is Worth Exploring!

Legal dramas are becoming a more frequent trend in Korean industry, but there are very few that are actually worth exploring!

An ensemble casting doesn’t always mean that the show will be good. It entails a diligent storytelling and a strong backdrop with intriguing characters. JTBC’s Saturday- Sunday offering “Beyond the Bar” encompasses all three with a dash of romance. The cases were handled professionally which is obviously the order in Korean law firms. The show basically revolves around rookie lawyer, Kang Hyo Min as she joins the popular law firm, Yullim and meets her immediate superior, Yun Seok Hun who is a stoic & disciplined man. While most shy away from joining his department because of his strict demeanor, Hyo Min willingly takes up the job because she wants to learn from him. And she does, because in due course of time, they became proficient partners both in personal & professional life. The show skims over the romance to focus more on the legal cases they handle. I guess that’s a relief because romance in a legal drama doesn’t make much sense!

Insightful Take on Korean Law and Society Overshadowed by Public's Need for Romance

Beyond the Bar is one of those lighter legal dramas complete with comedic breaks, an interesting second lead romantic subplot, and supporting cast. While it's nothing original or out of the box, it is a solid drama that stands on its own amidst dime-a-dozen romantic comedies. It's a shame that people paid more attention to the romantic plot than the actual message of the drama.

Each episode is a new case, with the exception of filler episodes, and pushes the overall relationship of the cast. Topics discussed include IVF, child abuse/neglect, plagarism, assisted suicide, rape (of a child), medical ethics, animal abuse, etc. Through each case, the screenwriter seemingly highlights how incomplete and lacking Korean law can be when it comes to protecting vulnerable populations. As such, the resolutions of each case aren't always as satisfying as it would be in an ideal world. In fact, through the MC himself, we are told that he, as a lawyer, uses both the law and other methods to achieve what he perceives to be 'justice'. Though we as the audience understand that this only works because it's a drama and the MC is the MC, it acknowledges all the ways in which the law is not complete. My favorite backhanded comment from our MC is when he mentions how more broadreaching Anglo-American law is because we sue for everything.

The romance between the second leads was quite interesting and had a lot of potential. It was not the atypical romance as it was between a 40 year old divorcee (with a grown child) and her colleague who is 10 years younger. To me, this was the main romantic plot and could have served as such if the ending wasn't messed up/rushed. It was a mature relationship that acknowledges each obstacle between them and works through them. While I was a hardcore fan of this relationship, I didn't feel the same way about the subplot between the MC and FMC. While both age gaps were about 10 years, I think it didn't carry the same weight as the second leads were friends and colleagues before they were a couple. Furthermore, FMC is someone who just recently graduated law school while MC has been an lawyer for a lot longer. Aside from the age gap, there is definitely an issue of power as he is her boss and she is basically at the bottom of the heirarchy.

I don't think the decision to rewrite the romantic subplot between the MC and FMC was wrong. In every way, there was just a huge gap in age (both as characters and in real life), in experience (MC legit is her mentor), and in the workplace. Instead of a lukewarm confession and rejection, I do think that the time could have been spent fleshing out the relationship between the second leads which got axed and sped up. Regardless, it was still a solid, underrated drama that has a lot of social commentary on Korean law and society.

I was astonished

I was a little bit confused about the end of the show.
Is it true, that it ends with an incomplete sentence?

Lee Jin Wook says the last sentence with "Love, for me is love ... ????

I thought, there is a last/first kiss in the ending scene?

Have I missed some scences?

The second couple was more interessted for me. There was more chemistry between the actors.

And at the end of all, why was the age gap so important? I mean, 11 years age differences ist not too much.

Really well written

I'm not a big one to watch lawyer shows because about halfway through, the storyline gets lost in weeds halfway done, and they forget how to move the main parts of the drama forward until episode 10-ish. By that time, I'm bored and move on.

This drama's writing is well-crafted, and the acting is above par. Not one episode dragged or lacked a thought-provoking storyline, BUT, the ending. Really? I'm not sure if they were hoping for a green light for season 2 or just wanted the viewer to write their own interpretation of the main leads' relationship, but I threw a couple of pillows at the TV after it aired. The ending should have complemented the previous 11 episodes and not left the viewer wondering, "What just happened?" Would I watch season 2? Yes, but I'd wait until all the episodes were released to make sure the drama didn't lack closure.

It's well worth watching, but do so with the understanding that season 2 is needed to know what relationship the two leads pursue. To me, writers need to understand that closure doesn't mean that a story is not followed further; it just tells the person watching what direction is chosen by the characters at that moment. I could understand if the main leads chose a mentor/student relationship or went forward to try a romantic one, but to leave off in mid-sentence is infuriating and my idea of lazy writing.

it isn’t the ending some of you are describing

Y’all criticize this ending, but it was exactly what the series needed. They weren’t loud people, a kiss would have been too noisy for them, the ending was just their way of love. His sentence wasn’t completed because love is not something you can describe, is something you can feel, and he was feeling it in that moment with hyomin! Let’s keep asking for a second season if yall want more of their love line, some of you have to remember romance wasn’t even in the genres of this series, and turned out to be its greatest masterpiece!

Beyond the interpretation of the law on emotional issues.

I loved every episode. It was very eloquent, and I thought it was well-written and well-crafted. I saw the intrigue surrounding each character throughout the story. I consider this one of those dramas that draws you in, surprises you, and ultimately makes you obsess.

It was enjoyable. They showed us interesting cases, and in a way, it felt refreshing. I wasn't bored. They emphasized that defense isn't just about defending, but also about a new way of seeing or interpreting what justice means. There are moments when you think you're guilty or innocent from a legal perspective, and when you look at it from a different angle, it's the opposite. Different ways to approach and resolve each case. Of course, in the end, it's the judges who decide, and their interpretation of the law shapes their final verdict.

Regarding Yuyin's villains and internal conflict, I found them somewhat bland.
The characters are wonderful, each with their own unique development and, of course, their own perspective on love and feelings.

I would have liked more episodes, but oh well, it is what it is. The quotes and messages conveyed were very comforting, very philosophical. The script was wonderful.

Although, personally, I would have loved to see some emotional development between the two main characters. A little more action, so to speak.

I loved the ending, an ambiguous outcome, and I find it refreshing. It didn't have the typical ending.

I actually watched it initially because of the potential romantic development between an older man and a younger woman, and that they would show some of that, but as I watched the episodes, I realized the series wouldn't focus on that. It would be more in-depth and analytical, as it turned out.

It would be great if there was a second season, but I think it probably won't happen. The ending was something like, "It ends here, period."

"Love is like a rainbow. You go from one color to another, but that doesn't mean the passion and love are over. It's just a new way of seeing this feeling." "Love begins with passion, then it becomes reality and ends in solidarity."
