VHS meets Squid Games (SOME SPOILERS!!)

The stuff of nightmares coming life. The VHS films are the worst of the worst of THE WORST things you could imagine given life via first person views. And I mean ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. They are short horror stories with another story as a whole being told in snippets between the endings. No use trying to make sense of them and wouldn't be able to anyways. It's just pure horror~
Most are familiar w/ Squid Games. That was a test of endurance, the longer you lasted increased the potential payouts~
Slam these together and get Dead End Job. ML is poor, debt ridden, and was about to give up on life. He sees an ad for 8hour temp jobs one day with insane payouts for completion. He learns the reason why on his first gig as these jobs entailed being beset with otherworldly supernatural monsters and situations as if Hell had opened up its gates. Minimum wage sets the standards but with a twist. His first job was x50. Next was 100, and so forth. The higher the multiplier, the more insane the job was. Thats the gist of it. Why is it happening? How? Who or what's behind it? Is there even a reason? I say no more~
8 eps. Avg length is 36 min but includes a full intro AND outro, it brings length down to 30 min. Yea. VERY short. Didn't like that at all. Cast is ok with most of the eps just having guest appearances per 'job'. If you like horror (I do love em. HUGE fan of the VHS anthologies), then this will be a palate cleanse over the gluttony of rom com and office romances currently flooding Kdramas because each job was unique, f'd up, and random. It's the type of drama that lets writers put together ANY combinations of f'd up crazy evil w/e and bring it to life on the screen. You'll know right away after the first EP if you'll watch or drop because it's not for everyone.

I’m not the right audience for this drama.

All i wanted to say, i didn't like drama at all. I think I’m not the right audience for this drama. Hope this drama finds its right audience, if it’s really that good at something.
If you really like or into shows/drama like squid game, 8 show or Alice in borderland, you can give it a chance.

Although, i really enjoyed Lee Jae-wook as Byeon Hyeok-joon screen presence well.

One must read before watch

Ok, it was Netflix's new drama, and it has a good cast on it. That's why I watched it.
But until the very end, you will understand nothing, whats going on.
Nothing was answered, just a cliffhanger in the end, so many monster things, but
What are they? Why are they coming? And what, with the story, nothing will be understandable.
The story is a total mess; nothing is understood there

The only good thing is the big new Gen cast of Korea.
and cinematography/visual effects are good

## Maybe many don't like this review, but seriously, "this review was for those who want a good story show to watch, not just something put on the lists. Actually, those kinds of people really read the review to get their time's worth. And that's why I am writing it."

The story is a total mess.
Tell me if you watch it, what's going on with the story ( for those who watch)

There's really nothing in this drama

A Big disappointment. Each episode fails to create any excitement of curiosity about what comes next, the horror is there, the mystery is there, the supernatural elements are there but all these were nothing but just laying on the words. The visual effects, especially the green screen work fell unconvincing and take away from overall experience. Even star cast like Lee Jae wook, Go Min Si, Kim Min Ha seem rather ordinary acting here. Their performance lack the impact needed to keep audiance invested. Honestly except Ep 02 there's no gripping moments, no strong emotional aspect and nothing that makes you genuinely look forward to the next episode. It feels like a struggle to sit through.

Also Netflix needs to rethink its script selection from time to time. It's high time them to start prioritising Good writing over flashy productions.

The kinship with Light Shop is obvious.

There's a recurring theme of human sacrifice : working yourself to death. I think it’s pretty clear… female workers, like Go Min-Si, who rebel and are simply "erased" from history. Then the boss of the recruitment agency shoots the woman who identifies herself as a member of a labor union…
The film also takes us back to the 1980s, the end of the South Korean dictatorship. Finally, we see the protagonist taking over from his employer after having laboriously tried to fight that system; from now on, he’ll uphold it in a different way... Does that make sense ?
To the people who complain about not getting any explanations at the end: there's nothing we can do for you. Or maybe you're still too young to have had a crappy, low-paying job that's way below your academic qualifications. That moment when you realize this system really is a deadly joke.

The 5-star cast complements a well-crafted production. The CGI scenes aren’t too bad for a short series. Kim Min-ha delivers an excellent performance in every role. Seriously, she’s an actress who never disappoints. And she was in Light Shop, as well.

I'll add that it's always funny to see amusement park mascots beating the crap out of each other. Episode 7, while frankly violent and even cruel, still manages to be a lot of fun.

I'm ready for the second season.

Brilliantly made. Beautifully told.

This is the kind of show you lose a whole night to without regret.

Beyond story and character, the production quality is genuinely exceptional.

What got me was how every single frame looked like someone actually cared about it.

More like someone sat with each shot and thought about what it should feel like before they committed to it.

Atmosphere sneaks up on you because of that. It builds through what you see, not just what happens.

Horror does not scream at you. It settles in quietly and stays there long after the episode ends, which is honestly the harder trick to pull off.

Humour works because It just puts the strange thing in front of you and gives it room to exist. That breathing space is everything. Most drama choke the life out of their own weird moments by overexplaining them.

Balancing genuine dread with something that makes you laugh two minutes later is the kind of tightrope act that usually ends with a drama falling flat on its face..

That balance between horror and humour, between genre entertainment and genuine social commentary is one of the hardest things to pull off in television. Dead End Job does it with confidence.

Lee Jae-wook carries the series with a rawness and a weariness that makes Hyeok-jun feel completely real.

Kim Min-ha is excellent as his younger sister Ji-yoon, steady and grounded where her brother is unravelling.

Go Min-si brings an intelligent, searching energy to Yeon-joo, the accident investigator slowly piecing together what the agency actually is.

And Lee Hee-jun as Mr. S, the charismatic, deeply unsettling head of Spider Staffing Agency, is the kind of character you cannot take your eyes off even when he is making your skin crawl.

One of the most clever things the creative team does is structure each episode around a completely different nightmare assignment.

Overnight at a convenience store overrun by grotesque swarms. Dawn delivery routes that turn into something far more sinister.

Each shift functions almost like clearing a level in a video game, building in difficulty and dread as the series progresses.

It sounds like it could become repetitive, but in practice it has the opposite effect.

Format gives the drama a pulse like rhythm that keeps you engaged right through to the end, while still leaving room for the larger mystery to unfold.

There were probably a few things in the writing that could have been better, but no show is perfect.

It is inventive, disciplined storytelling.

I hope it finds the audience it deserves

😊✌🏻

The price of survival

"Dead-End Job" does a wonderful job of capturing the lengths people go to simply to make ends meet and survive, even at the cost of their well-being. Life, as the drama reminds us, is a cruel game in which not everyone's dealt a winning hand

I'd encourage others to give "Dead-End Job" a watch

Good Drama, Fresh Plot, Needed More Episodes

This was honestly a pretty okay show. Nothing too crazy or groundbreaking, but I actually liked it 😭

The funniest part is that I literally started watching it because I saw a reel of Hyun-woo from episode 1. I usually read the synopsis, reviews, ratings, literally everything before starting a show, but for this one I knew almost nothing. I just started watching.

Episode 1 was probably my favorite, and I really liked episode 3 too. Episode 2 though... yeah idk 😭 I didn't really enjoy the whole Joker thing that much. But after that, I pretty much enjoyed everything.

Then while watching I saw Go Min-si and was like wait yes, I'm definitely watching this. And then Kim Min-ha showed up as his sister and I was like??? yess I'm staying 😭

Basically I started this for Lee Jae-wook and stayed for everyone.

The cast was genuinely so good. I loved the agency boss too, and I feel like so many of these characters could've been explored way more.

That's probably my biggest problem with the show. 8 episodes just weren't enough, especially when they're so short. There were so many things I wanted to know more about. Even from the first episode, like the women in that room. There were so many little things where I kept thinking okay wait... are we coming back to this or not.

Things were happening and they were interesting, but I wanted to know more. Why is this happening? How does all of this work? What's the story behind these things? What's going on with these characters? It felt like there was so much more to this world than what we actually got to see.

And the ending definitely made me feel like there should be a season 2 because hello, I wanna know, What happens now? Does he actually become what they're setting him up to become? And if he does, what is he going to do?

So yeah, it was interesting, the cast was great, and it's definitely a good watch. I just wish it had been longer and explored its world and characters more. ⭐

A Gameshow with shallow plot

I would never have believed that guy had it easy climbing back onto the bridge when he attempted to commit suicide. They would have preferably shown us as he came up/falling into the water and survived/at least someone should have aided him in that situation. I'm sure that does not make a point with the premise of this drama, but I'm stating how I feel.

In my opinion, the biggest flaw of this drama is how the makers/writers failed to connect each gig to something bigger. I would have appreciated it if they had done less of sending gigs to people and more on fleshing out those gigs. Each one of the gigs felt like a surface-level moment, with no substance, adding nothing of value to the plot. The convenience store gig at episode 1, was the creepiest and also the scariest to me, but then it added nothing to the plot other than thrills and creeps, so is the driving gig(driving the clown to the destination, and the clown kills everyone on site except him) and the milk store gig. The milk store gig felt like a way to draw his sister into this otherworldly job. The last four gigs were better because they had valid reasons to go to the gig (His sister wants to save him, he escapes and wants to save his sister, he seeks to know whether his father went missing from the gig work, and the last gig he wants to see his father on the other side). In the last four gigs, the character choices and purpose were not driven by money, but by care, love, and seeking the truth. But the gigs themselves still had untapped potential. I'm not sure what the writers were thinking, at the final arc Yeon Ju throws Mr. S into the otherworldly and also got dragged in with her knowledge, everything felt vague/bland, it didn't do anything to me emotional and otherwise, her motives were still a mystery. The fact is, both the man and the woman used Hyeok Jun; the man was way worse. I can't begin to imagine how many people he has killed, all for the greater good.

Mr. S claimed that if Hyeok Jun disclosed anything about the gig to anyone, there would be a penalty; the man clearly told two people, and Mr. S clearly knew, and there was no penalty. Was that statement a joke or what? Where was the stakes of the penalty had and also the fear Hyeok Jun had in not telling someone. I don't think I would ever risk my life for a high-paying job/cash in bucks; he clearly knew he could die, yet he went in once more and again and always claimed it would be the last, only to be reminded of his debt. Which brings me to another point: he was drowning in debt, yet no one came after him; should we say he was lucky, or did the writers forget that his debt was the initial premise of this drama?. Make some points a little more feasible.

I liked the relationship between Hyeok Jun and his sister; in all their banter and arguments, they truly cared, loved, and supported each other. Both were willing to brave their fears and situations just to save the other. When Mr. S called her, his older sister and she claimed she was the younger; I felt he was right she acts like the older one, looking out for her brother, protects him and all. I felt convinced through actions rather than implied/statements that she is the older sibling.

This drama touches on how people can be driven by money, easy jobs-big bucks- to an extent where you disregard your life and also that of others. In episode 5, when Hyeok Jun's friend ran back into the hospital, when he had already escaped from that hell, I was shocked as well as sad, knowing that he wouldn't come out again. Don't they get that easy deals/big bucks don't come at a small price; it's worth much more, and maybe even your life.

Lee Jae Wook, Go Min Si, Kim Min Ha and Lee Hee Jun nailed their roles perfectly. Byeon Hyeok Jun frustration, despair, fear, doubt and all was everything, it felt real and palpable. Yeon Ju mysterious demeanour was expressed perfectly by Go Min Si. I would have loved a good backstory on this woman: her motives, what went on when she was in the other world, how she escaped, and where she went at the end. Did she die? Or is she back in the other world?. Kim Min Ha played her character so well; her bold, brave, fearless, and subtly caring habit was a standout. Lee Hee Jun portrayed the mysterious and hidden Mr. S well; I couldn't place this man throughout the drama. I thought he was the least explained main character in the drama.

When I finished this drama, I couldn't quite place what the plot was exactly, except that the ML runs gigs here and there that are sinister and uncanny. This felt like a game where the character had to stay at some spooky place for a specified time, while dealing with ordeals, and at the end he receives cash. The actor's performance was the standout in this drama. Season 2 is needed because there are many unanswered questions and hidden backstories; they should make the plot feasible enough and flesh out the gigs into something bigger, not just a one-time moment that seems nonexistent.

Short, Scary, and Surprisingly Bingeable

Dead-End Job is short and sweet. The eight episodes fly by, and they're well connected together—each one flows into the next without feeling like a drag.

The storyline is interesting: a horror theme with a good dose of humor. I like that every episode features a different horror theme, which keeps things fresh. I binge-watched the whole thing in one go.

I loved Choi Hyun-wook's appearance in the first episode—he plays Hee-dong, a character tied to the convenience-store shift. And Kim Min-ha is fantastic as always; she plays Byeon Ji-yoon, the younger sister, and she's a great actress.

That said, it's not mind-blowing. I'm not entirely sure why, because I love the concept and the crazy sets—it's just that the male lead, Lee Jae-wook as Byeon Hyeok-jun, doesn't quite fit there, or maybe his character would have worked better if played differently. I can't put my finger on it.

But still, I had a good time. If you're looking for a quick, entertaining horror-comedy with creative episodes and a great supporting cast, this one is worth a watch.

Original y divertida
