Interesting, but Confusing?
This is absolutely remarkable! The myriad adaptations of Judge Dee are nothing short of captivating, yet I can’t shake the feeling that, after just a few minutes, the narrative threads start to intertwine in a dizzying array. The complex plots and ever-evolving cast of characters can swiftly plunge you into a labyrinth of confusion, leaving your mind swirling in a delightful, yet bewildering, dance of intrigue and mystery. Was this review helpful to you?
Solid Direction and Acting
The directing and acting are superb in this drama. I like that the director takes their time developing the story and the actors are able hold interest in the mysteries presented. Chinese dramas have some of the best writers, actors, and directors. This drama has an air of mystery and foreboding that gives it gravitas. However, there are light-hearted moments, action, and subtle romance. I like the characters that have been created, especially Judge Dee. Hopefully there will be anothe season of this mystery series. Was this review helpful to you?
Unraveling Emotions and Morality: A Personal Take on ‘Judge Dee’s Mystery'
I personally enjoyed this drama and finished it in just a few days. At first, I hesitated to watch because I didn’t find the male lead attractive. But I still gave it a try. In the end, it was able to keep me interested until the end. For me, this was a good drama. It made me question moral standards sometimes. I kept thinking about what was right and what was wrong while watching this drama, especially in the later episodes. This drama kept me wondering for days about things happening in the real world, about human emotions - greed, anger, ignorance, dislike, love, desire, hatred. It wasn’t as bad as others said. The plot is engaging, with a good balance of suspense, drama, and romance. The storyline progresses at a steady pace, keeping the viewers hooked till the end. The unexpected plot twists add an element of surprise, making the drama all the more intriguing. This deserved a higher rating. Was this review helpful to you?
Nice detective drama.
This was a good drama, not great, but not bad either, i enjoyed it.I really liked that there were several different cases, so that kept the story interesting. I am always a fan of good detective story's.
The visuals were beautifull and the acting was good.
I probably won't watch it again.

Memorable fight scenes but unengaging story
As a fan of Detective Dee movies, Zhou Yi Wei did not work for me. Thinking back to some of the Detective Dee actors:Andy Lau
Yiheng Du (Who worked as Andy Lau's body double prior so Andy 2nd)
Mark Chao
The ideal image of Detective Dee is far from Zhou Yi Wei's. Not that he isn't a great actor, after all he was so good in Rebel Princess & Longest Day in Chang An.
It started out as a promising series with quality production and many familiar actors. Set, costume, lighting, makeup, all so good & the fight scenes were the best! Less (special effects) is more when you can see continuous sequence (if you like classic kung fu). Ep 24 where he fought 1:1 against the female was one of my favorite scenes.
The promising series quickly got killed by the storyline after 4 episodes. It was hard to stay engaged after the Empress was no longer part of the subsequent cases. I've watched it through for the fight scenes, but the cases were blah.....
Also, Zhang Ruo Yun listed as "Main" was not even a main actor. He was only a part of one case, and I don't even understand why the character was written that way. Totally didn't make sense to me, completely anticlimactic.

Watchable but very dry
The series visually looks great but after 15 episodes and a few story arcs, it still feels really dry. There's nothing particularly offensive about it but there's also not much to look forward to. The ML was interesting in the first two episodes but stayed pretty flat thereafter. And there is way too much screen time with him running off to his songstress love interest, and way too many cases that just so happen to involve her somehow. His two bandit companions are also equally as dry and there's just no chemistry with any of the characters. The story arcs are just fine but nothing very intriguing either. They over-dramatize the sound effects and music but nothing really dramatic is actually happening. It's also quite boring for the culprit to ALWAYS be someone who's somehow close to the ML. And because there's very little character build up in general, you're just watching it play out with no actual attachments.
It's quite unfortunate because the overall production was actually done pretty well. It's a good super casual watch if you just need something to pass the time and if you need something you can drop quite easily.

Surprisingly not horrible!
As a rule I'm not a fan of C-anything because of crap dubbing, horrible scripts, cliche everything and some really poor acting, but this series only left me mildly annoyed. I will watch it until the end, on purpose.Zhou Yi Wei: I'm watching this on Netflix, Netflix doesn't let you leave reviews so I went hunting for a place to start leaving them, so here I am. I read some reviews because they were there. After a reasonably enjoyable 9 episodes I'm surprised at how many people were displeased with Zhou Yi Wei being the ML. His acting in this is spot on, even his fight scenes are believable...when does that ever happen??? I didn't once role my eyes or groan at him for any reason thus far...if you know me, you know that it's a rare thing for me to be so not critical of anything. It seems he isn't pretty enough for a lot of the reviewers...that's a bit shallow isn't it kids? One of the things I love about British productions, the person that can do the job best gets the job...whether they fit into the ridiculous 'pretty' box or not.
Writing: Well, for the most part, not too shabby. I'm a lot disappointed with the female sidekick, full on annoying cliche character. Di's love interest...wow...I've had better dialog with cardboard cutouts. The empress, seriously! After all those episodes of Di doing his job for her and doing it well, she sends him a note saying he has a month to solve a case or he will be as guilty as the perpetrators....whaaaat? Who wrote that crap?
Production: The close up scenes were well done, the ones at a distance were obviously CGI with the same clips used over and over again throughout. Dubbing for the most part was good, there were a few places where it was very cringy, but not as bad as the typical C-anything.
Acting: All actors did well, even the annoying cliche because I will never make an actor shoulder the weight for poor writing.
Music: Honestly had a hard time deciding how to grade it. I'm sitting here trying to remember any of it, I can't, it's like there was no music. So either there wasn't any, or it was calm enough to stay under my radar. I'm a musician, this rarely happens, I am confused. I opted for 8/10 to show respect for the stealth of tunes.
Story: Generally, so far, so good.
Watch again: Yes. I can't give any production higher respect than my will to watch it again...I don't do it often.

Outstanding Drama Superb in every way
This is an absolutely outstanding Drama. Briliant acting. Fabulous characters. Wonderful story lines. What a treat. I cannot speak highly enough of this one. The Magistrate was fabulous. Well done everyone. Top Marks. Each Character had their own story. The Judge was a bit stubborn and driven. Each episode was a whole story on it's own. Magnificent production. Was this review helpful to you?
Mystery, Action & Romance
JUDGE DEE'S MYSTERY (2024) is an excellent Chinese mystery drama based on the original Judge Dee book series of historical detective novels by Dutch author Robert van Gulik, featuring a magistrate and detective from China's 7th-century Tang Dynasty, based on a real historical figure, Di Renjie (played by Yiwei Zhao), who was excellent in his role. For a while, I've been searching for historical fiction dramas that are set in a fantasy / fictional world and yet firmly grounded in reality and historical atmosphere. This series fit the bill, and was just perfect, in my opinion. This series was super enjoyable with a great cast and settings as well. The locations are fantastic as well as the sets and costumes were all visually stunning. I absolutely loved this series.
"A brilliant investigator incurs the wrath of a shadowy foe when he travels to a border town to tackle crimes and misdeeds on behalf of Empress Wu Zetian."
Overall, this series was fantastic. I enjoyed almost everything about it, from the mysteries to the incredible cast to the exciting fight scenes. A great series! Hoping for a sequel season soon!

Loved It
A short but sweet review. I'd rate the series episode by episode. Some episodes were outstanding drama. Some were soap operish. Well cast, Well written. I liked the scenes that looked like the desert to me. I'd rewatch a few episodes to understand what actually happened. It was always clear to me. But in the end it was a good series. Worth watching if you like adventure, mystery and a bit of romance. Was this review helpful to you?
Too Smart for Its Own Good
If you love historical crime solving with a legendary twist, Judge Dee’s Mystery brings to life the story of Di Ren Jie, a brilliant scholar who has just passed the imperial examinations and is waiting for his official post in Chang’an. Instead of enjoying a smooth appointment, he is unexpectedly dispatched by Empress Wu Zetian to a remote border town filled with strange and layered mysteries. There, Di Ren Jie takes on the heavy responsibility of the higher judiciary, determined to uphold justice and bring peace and prosperity to the people. From the very first episode, you can tell this is not a light snack drama. This is a full course meal that demands your attention. The cases are dense, dialogue heavy, and layered with political undertones. I often had to pause between cases just to process everything. If you blink, you might miss a clue. It is the kind of series that requires you to sit properly, maybe even lean forward a little, detective mode activated.
Visually, though, it is chef’s kiss. The sets are grand, the color grading is rich, and every frame screams quality. There is elegance in the composition and a quiet charisma in the way scenes are shot. I especially loved the softer camera movements during scenes on the ship sailing across the sea. It adds a subtle poetic touch. The costumes and styling are beautifully done, detailed and refined. This drama looks expensive, and it wears that budget proudly.
Then we have the Empress, inspired by the legendary Wu Zetian. Her presence alone could silence a room. The way she walks, the tone of her voice, even the slight lift of her brow, everything radiates authority. The sound effects subtly amplify her aura, making her scenes feel even more commanding. Every time she appears, it feels like the air shifts.
As for Di Ren Jie himself, portrayed by Zhou Yi Wei, it has been a while since I watched a historical drama led by such a mature and charismatic male lead. He embodies Di Ren Jie at what I would call his prime manliest age. There is intelligence in his gaze, steadiness in his posture, and surprising agility in his martial arts. His moves are swift and precise, proving that brains and brawn can coexist beautifully. Zhou Yi Wei truly carries the drama on his shoulders. In many cases, it feels like Di Ren Jie is solving everything almost single handedly.
Opposite him is Cao An, played by Wang Li Kun. At first, Cao An is wrapped in mystery. Her past, her motives, her true feelings, they slowly unravel and keep you curious. Wang Li Kun brings elegance and quiet femininity to the role, perfectly balancing Di Ren Jie’s intensity. Their relationship is not the main focus of the drama, but it is definitely something to look forward to. From trusted confidants to something more tender and restrained, their slow burn dynamic adds a soft emotional layer to an otherwise heavy narrative. The subtle admiration and controlled affection between them is handled beautifully.
That said, I have to be honest. The story can feel very heavy, sometimes too heavy. I started losing momentum around episode nine and even stopped watching for a while. The cases, although serious and detailed, often felt predictable. Many times, the culprit seemed obvious early on, which took away the thrill of guessing. As a viewer, I did not feel actively involved in solving the mysteries. It felt more like watching Di Ren Jie think everything through on his own while I sat on the sidelines. Some cases also dragged longer than necessary, which did not help with pacing.
There were moments when I caught myself multitasking while the drama played in the background. Not exactly the ideal way to watch a mystery series. I need that spark, that “aha!” moment that makes me gasp and rewind. Here, that spark was a bit too rare for my taste.
In the end, Judge Dee’s Mystery is undeniably high quality in production and performance. It has grandeur, elegance, and a commanding lead performance. But it is also a serious commitment that requires patience and full concentration. For now, I am putting it on pause. Maybe one day, when I am in the mood for a slower, more methodical investigation drama, I will return to Di Ren Jie’s world of justice and intrigue. Until then, I rest my case.

The story did not lure me in after 8 episodes. Too bad it loaded with good stars.
Judge Dee's Mystery is a historical crime drama loaded with good stars (Elaine Zhong, Wang Li Kun, Zhang Ruo Yun, and Zhou Yi Wei). Still, it did not lure me in because the script was bad, and Zhou Yi Wei did not do well as the main character in this drama.Zhou Yi Wei acted better in The Rebel Princess than in this drama.
The Synopsis:
It tells the legendary story of Di Renjie, known for his crime-solving abilities. Di Renjie has conquered the imperial examinations and awaits his official appointment in Chang'an. However, he was suddenly dispatched by Empress Wu Zetian to a border town where he encounters many mysteries. Di Renjie stands up to the challenge of upholding the duty of the higher judiciary to bring peace and prosperity to the people.
My Reviews:
1. I like Zhou Yi Wei's acting in The Rebel Princess than in this drama.
2. The script is so bad and disappointing when loaded with good stars.
3. I am dropping this drama after 8 episodes.
I give it a 5.0 rating for a horrible script. It is my opinion so don't get angry.
