This one is for the girls
Honestly, My Royal Nemesis has that K-drama X-factor. You know the one. The vibe is immaculate, the chemistry is chemistry-ing, and before you know it, you're giggling, kicking your feet, and wondering why we don't get dramas like this more often. And let's talk about the male lead.
That man was so obviously written by a woman. Romantic, devoted, swoon-worthy, yearning at Olympic levels, oof, we haven't had a male lead like this in a long time. He is absolutely for the girls.
Now, do I have issues with Shin So-ri's characterization? Yes. Many. But Lim Ji-yeon did such a fantastic job that I found myself overlooking problems I normally wouldn't. That's the power of a good performance.
The frustrating thing about this drama is that everything surrounding the story is a 10/10. The cast, the ensemble, the chemistry, the atmosphere, the visuals, the villains , all work Then the plot has holes in it.
And goodness are there plot holes. Some genuinely baffling inconsistencies. There were moments where I found myself getting annoyed because I wanted this drama to be as good as its cast deserved.
But goodness, is it charming.
I loved how refreshing the casting felt. Everyone looked like actual people. No distracting filters or uncanny perfection. It felt authentic in a way many dramas don't anymore.
I also loved the little nods to My Lovely Sam Soon. As someone who considers My Lovely Sam Soon the gold standard of rom-coms, those references felt like little gifts.
And despite all my complaints, I had a great time.
Did everything make sense? No.
Were there plot holes? Absolutely.
Did I swoon anyway? Unfortunately, yes.
Objectively, this is probably a 5.5 or 6/10. But my heart? My heart says 7.5/10 because these actors were working overtime to sell every emotion, every yearning glance, every ridiculous plot development.
Sometimes good acting can carry a drama much further than it has any right to go.
And My Royal Nemesis is living proof of that.

Strong lead chemistry, sharp comedy, and genuine emotional moments; some side plots feel underused.
The Royal Nemesis is a playful, sharply written rom-com that trades on an irresistible fish-out-of-water setup: Im Ji-yeon’s Sin Seo Ri, a legendary Joseon “villainess” reborn in the 21st century, collides with Heo Nam-jun’s cold, calculating chaebol Cha Se Gye. The premise could have leaned purely on gimmickry, but the show finds steady grounding in character work and tonal control. Im Ji-yeon gives a magnetic performance — she layers Sin Seo Ri’s vicious historical cunning with a bewildered, almost childlike curiosity for modern life, making the character funny, dangerous, and oddly sympathetic. Heo Nam-jun plays well against her, delivering a restrained, steel-edged Cha Se Gye whose emotional thaw is earned rather than telegraphed. The writing balances screwball beats and emotional stakes: comedy scenes land often thanks to timing and the culture-clash setup, while quieter moments let the leads reveal unexpected vulnerabilities. Supporting players, notably Jang Seung-jo’s Choi Mun Do, add texture and occasional moral friction, even if some secondary arcs feel underexplored. Production values are solid — period-flashback aesthetics and contemporary settings are both handled with care — and pacing generally keeps episodes lively without rushing the core relationship.
Weaknesses are familiar: occasional reliance on rom-com tropes, a few underused side plots, and a predictability in certain plot turns. Still, the series excels where it matters most for this genre: committed lead chemistry, an emotional throughline that respects both characters, and a winkingly theatrical premise that never overstays its welcome.
Verdict: Charming and character-driven enough to justify its premise. Strong lead performances and steady tonal control make this a rewarding watch for rom-com fans. Rating: 8.0/10.

Chaotic couple
I genuinely enjoyed this drama from start to finish, although I have to admit that the last few episodes were a bit disappointing. Even so, I had so much fun watching it, mainly because of the wonderfully chaotic main couple.Their relationship is messy, raw, hilarious, and incredibly entertaining. Instead of the usual overly sweet and lovey-dovey romance, their chemistry feels natural and comfortable, which made it even more enjoyable to watch. They bicker, tease each other, and somehow make every interaction feel fun.
The main storyline is decent, though it isn't the strongest or most captivating part of the drama. What truly makes this show shine are the comedy, the romantic moments, and all the hilarious scenes between the leads. Those are easily the highlights of the entire series.
I'd definitely recommend this drama if you're looking for amazing chemistry, plenty of laughs, and a delightfully chaotic couple that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

Perfect Romcom
So fun!!!Loser in love is one of my fave tropes and they 100% commit to it. They do the rom and com part of this show well. I liked the comedy as it was based on the insane premise of the female lead time travelling.
Cha Segye and Shin Seori both matched each other's crazy. The fact that he didn't question why she was acting like someone from Joseon era and just liked her as she is showed how insane he was. Loved all of their moments and I'm glad they continued to have that banter between them even after they got together. All of Cha Segye's yearning and angsty moments were amazing, top tier kdrama male lead for sure.
I'm not mad at the plot of the soul swap, I actually think it was a good and unique version of the cliche. Them being lovers in every timeline added so much depth to their story.
The villain was just too cartoon-ish, we could have avoided him and just have Cha Segye be a hated nepo baby but even then that didn't annoy me much.
Overall 10/10, I will definitely be rewatching some of these episodes

with a killer, high-concept premise And great cast but total dissapointment with predictable tropes
It is incredibly disappointing when a K-drama starts with a killer, high-concept premise , cinematography , Talented actress and then immediately waters it down into the same old tired, predictable tropes. You have a Joseon "villainess"—a woman who survived the brutal, cutthroat politics of the royal court using her wit, manipulation, and sheer force of personality. Dropping a powerhouse like that into the modern entertainment industry is absolute gold. There were so many challanges in modern workd she coukd have gone through, and with experiencing high stake political wars in palace she is not a naive character.
History is almost always written by the victors (and usually men), meaning powerful, ambitious women in the palace were instantly stamped as "evil villains."
The show had a massive opportunity to explore her trauma survive and defend her past actions—showing why she had to be branded as a vilan .
But what happened was after 6 episodes in and it’s just the male lead trailing her around while they check off the standard "arrogant rich guy, struggling woman. it was just Same trope Rich arrogant CEO with poor women. That is a massive waste of a dynamic character.
Until episode 3 it was fairly good with something new to watch. The potential here was endless. Instead, by Episode 6, the writers completely abandon their own high-concept premise to deliver a generic, utterly boring "rich chaebol meets poor, struggling woman" romance.
The female lead survived the brutal, cutthroat politics of the Joseon royal court. She shouldn't be a damsel in distress. The story should have been about her using her ruthless ambition, palace-honed acting skills, and sharp intelligence to conquer the modern entertainment industry.
The show completely misses the opportunity to explore the historical branding of women. It could have deeply examined how history paints ambitious palace women as "evil villains," drawing a parallel to how the modern media treats actresses.
Six episodes in, and nothing actually happens. The plot consists entirely of Cha Se-gye trailing Seo-ri around.
The casting choices are great, and both leads are genuinely good actors, but they are trapped in a script that wasn't good.

A wonderful K-drama
Oh my god/ I'm loving this K-drama. I adore both leads and the story is so interesting. The dynamic between them is fantastic, and especially the way they look at each other... wow! The way they explain the past and present is quite interesting. The set design, the music, and the acting are all top-notch. I had seen the lead actress act before and she really surprised me with this role. As for the lead actor, I had seen him in other K-dramas as a supporting actor and he always caught my attention more, so I'm very happy that he has this lead role. Was this review helpful to you?
Started Strong, Lost Momentum + Terrible Chemistry
I really liked this show when it started and it's such a shame to see it lose momentum like this. It's so many things that I can't mention to avoid spoilers but one big one would be WHERE IS THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE ML AND FL?? The romance part of this story is not getting to me at all.
And the plot stake too isn't high enough to keep viewers curious. I almost want to say it makes no sense yet and we are at the seventh episode.
Lol idk I'm dropping it but you can watch it if you want.

Heo Nam Jun Steals the Spotlight!
This was an entertaining drama purely because of the actors in it. The story is not novel and at times I felt it was made too complex than needed, cause we have come across such stories before. But in spite of that - the soul of this drama were the actors in it - the main leads, the antagonist, the friendly rivals and aides of the main casts. For me, the biggest one was definitely Heo Nam Jun as the ML. Having seen him in support roles or villain/grey characters - this role was truly unexpected, and I am grateful to the casting director for making the choice. He was handsome, sexy, cute and so expressive - what a talent! His shy/cute smile that seemed so awkward given his cold/sharp face (in the scene when he's happy on the inside that the FL is chosen as the main model) is going to live rent-free in my mind, it's already iconic.➥ WHAT WORKED:
● The Acting: It is the soul of the show. The main leads (as expected) were good in comedy, fights, enemies-to-lovers, fire chemistry (that inside-hand kiss? swoon). Just flawless, darling! Heo Nam Jun [ML] was the star for me here - as I already shared. Im Ji Yeon [FL] - we already know of her acting prowess, she was good as ever though on a personal level I always want to b-slap her cause of her role in Glory. But then the fact that I feel that way is the reason that shows how good she is as an actress.
● The Antagonist / Rivals: I love Jang Seung Jo [Mun Do] - having loved him in Familiar Wife where he was a good/goofy character, then the suave/grey role in Death's Game, this was technically the first time I saw him as an antagonist - and he was so magnetic. He was cold and ruthless - as the role demanded, and vulnerable as we get some insights onto his background and what makes him act so. Not justified - yet at the same time I love villains like these. Even the FL's rival - Lee Se Hee [Ji Hyo], I have seen her only in another fav drama of mine: A Virtuous Business - where I loved her character. Here too, she shines - eventually coming across as a spoiled and jealous star actress but eventually you warm up to her. She was great in her role.
● The Aides: Love Love Love "Yoon Byung Hee" [Se Gye Right-hand man] - anytime I see him in a drama, I know he will crack me up. What a loyal and funny secretary. Kim Min Seok [Seori's Manager] - again seen him in countless dramas/movies and he's always playing such different characters. He always looks so young too!
➥ WHAT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME:
● The Pacing: When I started watching the drama, it was so entertaining & I thought that 14 episodes might be too less for such a great drama. But overtime I felt the drama dragged at places. Like I still wanted to watch it - but I was doing it out of obligation to complete the story and not excitement. Basically till Ep 7 I was pressing the "Next Episode" button, forgetting to sleep/eat/drink - but after that the story became serious, and pace was not so-exciting as before. As per me it could have been done better.
● The FL's antics: So this is a comparison and I know each actor would do it differently. Given this drama is very close to one of my all-time favorites "MR QUEEN (2020)" I could not help but compare. While I liked how the FL here was a Queen and therefore acted that way - it felt a little over-the-top and repetitive. SHS as Mr Queen was great - the internal monologue by a man, and then her acting as a woman - it felt natural as if SHS was the character. I felt a disconnect here - cause so many things were simply repetitive. "Comparison is the thief of joy" - I guess it is true but then I can't help it - Mr Queen is like a benchmark for me, and deservedly so.
● The Twist: It was good twist - no doubt, but then the way it was laid out felt very weak to me. And by the time it came - I think many had already guessed it, so it was not that impactful. The idea was good, the execution/delivery did not hand out the "WOW/Mindblown" element.
➥ OVERALL:
Definitely recommend watching - cause it was entertaining. I will not rewatch it entirely - but yes, some romantic moments and definitely scenes of Heo Nam Jun acting coy/cute and cold - will definitely be on loop for me. That smile - iconic.

SPECIAL MENTIONS:
▶Jung Jae Kwang [Se-Gye's doctor friend] - I want this guy to make his main lead debut soon. He is so handsome, and that voice. Loved him here, in Trauma Code & Idol I - and he's so diverse in each role, I can't help but want to see more of him.
▶ Kim Hae Sook [Seori's grandma] - an acting veteran, what can I even say except its always so comforting to see her in any drama. Here too, she carried the emotional and family anchor for the FL and was amazing
▶ Chae Seo An [Tae Hui] - she was a surprise but not really. I had recently seen & loved her in "Perfect Crown (2026)" and even before - royal roles suit her a lot like she was in Moonshine (2021). I want to see her in a main lead role too, I think she's wonderful - beauty and talent! Here too - she played a great role of being a thorn / partner to main leads romance and story with such finesse!
▶ Jung Young Joo [Se Gye's Elder Aunt]: She's always in such a loud/boisterous kind of role - I love seeing her every time she's onscreen. I wish her role here was more, but even in the little time, she's always great.

the best kdrama in 2026
I honestly didn't expect much from this drama, but it ended up becoming one of my all-time favorites.I was completely immersed in the story and enjoyed every moment of it. For a few hours, it allowed me to forget all my worries and escape from real life, which is something I truly appreciated.
The main couple was amazing, and their chemistry was one of the drama's biggest strengths. Heo Nam-jun, in particular, delivered an outstanding performance and made me fall in love with his character from beginning to end.
Of course, the script wasn't perfect, and there were some weaknesses in the storyline. However, the emotions this drama made me feel were far more important than its flaws.
What I'll remember most is how it made me smile, laugh, and forget my problems for a while. For that reason alone, I'm grateful to this drama.

The Yearning Was Real, The Logic Was Not
Started with a royal bang, ended with a royal shrug. The plot holes were bigger than Joseon itself — time travel with zero explanation, and a wisdom tooth surgery performed with a face mask covering the MOUTH- i.e the surgical site (as a dental professional I am filing a formal complaint). Segye woke up in a flash even though his kidneys were badly damaged due to the multiple stab wounds- Writers care to explain? ML was sweetly carrying the whole drama kingdom on his back and I did enjoy the romance… until Shin Seori's ancient accent drove me to commit the unforgivable sin of switching to English Audio. BUT. The one thing that redeemed this finale? The original Kang Dan and Grand Prince sailing away to Qing, finally free — his yearning eyes said everything the script couldn't. The writers fumbled the logic but accidentally stuck the emotional landing. 8/10, would've been a 9 if science existed in this universe. Was this review helpful to you?
