WOW, I really loved this drama. The story is so well-plotted with a lot of mystery, tension and twists that kept me guessing. The plot twists genuinely surprised me but what I loved most is that they felt satisfying and actually connected to the story rather than being random shocks. The pacing also does a good job of slowly revealing the characters their motivations and the secrets behind what is happening. ❤️✨

The acting is another huge highlight. Li Yitong and Li Xian are especially impressive, both individually and together. Their chemistry feels very natural and they make the complicated history between their characters believable. I really love how their relationship changes from lovers to enemies and eventually into something that isn't quite romantic but is still incredibly close. There is so much unresolved emotion, trust and understanding between them, which makes their scenes together so interesting to watch. 💞

The supporting cast also adds a lot to the story and the characters don't feel like they're only there to move the plot forward. Everyone has their own motivations and secrets, which makes the world feel much more layered.

And the behind-the-scenes clips make their chemistry even more adorable 😭 Seeing how comfortable they are together, especially Li Xian taking pictures of Li Yitong is just TOO CUTE. 😍

✨✨✨Overall, The Prophet is a great drama for anyone who loves thrillers, mysteries, suspense and unexpected plot twists. The story keeps you curious with its secrets, investigations, tension and satisfying twists, while the characters add emotional depth. I also really like that, unlike many C-dramas with 30+ episodes, The Prophet only has 24 episodes, so it feels more compact, light, and comfortable to watch without feeling overly dragged out. With strong acting, complicated relationships, great chemistry and an intriguing atmosphere, it’s an addictive but easy watch that keeps you wanting to know what happens next. ✨✨✨

Hidden Gem Drama

I watched this drama since i quite both of the leads and the genre is my cup of tea. If you are into Lupin or Trick, you'll LOVE this drama. Each case not only has suspense but also incorporates fortune telling and feng shui, making the theme feel very fresh. The pacing is incredibly fast and never drags, it's simply not enough and addicting!

The characters were intelligent, and the story structure was clear. There is NO GOOD GUY in this drama and i like it. You'll never know what will they do and it. The romance was quite okay and not overshadow the main theme.

There's no superficial filter, and Jiang Feiyan doesn't exist solely to highlight the male characters. She embodies both the helplessness of being unable to control her own destiny and the struggle and resilience within adversity, creating a well-rounded and multifaceted character arc. It's evident that the screenwriter genuinely focused on the character's essence, which is especially rare, especially considering it's a work by a male screenwriter (*Cough*, this is sole problem for chinese drama). I also particularly enjoyed the episodic characters; they felt incredibly real and relatable. They weren't just characters serving the main plot; they each had their own obsessions, desires, and unfulfilled ambitions. Even with limited screen time, they possessed their own joys and sorrows.

I never questioned Li Xian acting though even he is not my favorite actor. Li Yitong's acting is truly superb, her emotional shifts are so obvious. I am glad she is breaking her sweet funny female persona in here. The "tension" is sparkling even i am not shipping them in drama.

Wont giving the ending spoiler, but there is potential it will be answered in Season 2

The writers previously stated that a second season would only be possible if the show performed well and i will watch the second season. Highly Recommended

Fabulous acting & intriguing plot! (NOT a romance, fyi!)

I'm really enjoying this drama as a change of pace. I like how the past is shown in this drama, it doesn't feel out of place each time we get to see what happened to the ML in the past and I also liked the parts where the ML was telling his past as a "story" as well. I thought that was very well done!

The ML's acting is seriously top notch. The pacing is fast but good for this kind of drama & I'm very excited to see the ML continue on his road of revenge and to see what happens when the ML catches up to the FL again. I know this isn't a romance but I can't but guess their chemistry and scenes will be amazing!

I was right. The chemistry between characters like the ML & FL is wonderful and each episode gets better and better. There's lots of action and intrigue in this, cases are different in each episode and the stakes get raised higher and higher. The pacing has remained steady and pretty fast but it suits this kind of drama very well.

This has been such fun to watch! Can't wait to see the next episodes (watched 14/24 so far!)

to be continued...

The drama was superb! Great acting, fun mini plots, and the pacing stayed consistent. I enjoyed the action, watching the scams unfold and even the more ridiculous stuff. It was fun and most of all, super entertaining!

{{{{SPOILER}}}}
It ends on a cliff hanger of sorts, but not in a way that takes away from the "ending" which in my opinion was satisfying. It did leave a person's Identity at the end as a cliffhanger which could possibly set up a Season 2. However, if Season 2 never happens, I feel like the ending can be deemed pretty much a complete ending anyway. :)

Fortune-Telling, Fake Mystics, and Long Cons

A Prophet (2026) is a thriller that delivers a refreshing take on the classic revenge trope. For a C-Drama the story and concept is really new and praiseworthy.

Plot: The narrative centers on Shangguan Chengming (played by Li Xian), who goes undercover to dismantle the deceptive Tianxiang Sect—the shadowy organization responsible for his family's tragedy. The story tells how Shangguan Chengming navigates his way in this deceptive and corrupt sect.

Positive Sides
** The story unfolds like a high-stakes game of chess. Seeing the protagonists turn the manipulators' own tactics back on them keeps the momentum tight throughout the drama
** For a C-Drama the concept is really new and it stars with a blast.
** The Republican-era aesthetic, tight cinematography, and slick pacing create a gritty suspenseful atmosphere which makes you crave for more.

Downsides
** Even though the story and concept is refreshing but it feels something is missing.
** At the beginning the pace is good but it gets a bit draggy later.
** Revenge should be swift and decisive but in this drama it didn't feel that satisfying.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers, con-artist capers, or revenge dramas with strong, morally gray leads, A Prophet is definitely worth a spot on your watchlist.

Amazing drama

The Prophet (2026); 10/10

I really enjoyed watching this drama. It was amazing, entertaining, and honestly very fun to watch from beginning to end. The story kept me curious about what would happen next, and there were plenty of interesting moments that made me want to continue watching instead of stopping halfway.

What I liked most is that the drama gave me that feeling of wanting to know what happens in the next episode. The characters, story, mystery, and different situations made the drama enjoyable for me as a viewer. Some parts were surprising, some were funny, and some moments made me seriously think about what was going on.

I’m not a professional drama critic, so I’m rating this simply as an ordinary viewer who enjoyed the experience. For me, a drama doesn’t need to be perfect in every single detail if it can keep me entertained and make me look forward to the next episode. This one definitely did that.

Overall, I had a great time watching The Prophet. It was interesting, exciting, and entertaining, and I would happily recommend it to viewers who enjoy Chinese dramas with mystery, drama, and an engaging story.

My rating: 10/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

For me, this is definitely one of those dramas where you watch one episode and then think, “Okay, just one more.” 😂

DO NOT WATCH IT FOR THE ROMANCE

Let me start this review with saying that the score is an absolute joke. I'm genuinely upset by how unfair people are about this drama and it's actually very simple, for once: if you don't like it - it's not for you. Yeah, it sounds mean but it's true and that's okay. The reason why people give low rating is that a) they got bored because they couldn't follow the plot and b) the lack of romance. These are *THE ONLY* reasons why the score is so low. If you don't believe me, I encourage you to find me a low (below 7) review for this drama. It doesn't exist because there is nothing wrong with it, it's all matter of personal taste and preferences. If you think this is another Overdo, Lament of Autumn, etc. -> it's not. You have to follow the plot otherwise get lost. Romance is hinted here and there, but they are not dramatically in love and pining. That's just not happening.

This is a male centered revenge story set in Republican era. Think of mix of Now You See Me, Peaky Blinders, Unveil: Jadewind and Cases Between Us. Basically, con the conman who is playing a con on you with another side secret con, but they know about the con, and you know that they know that you know.... As you can see, this is plot driven drama with layers and plot twists, and it is very well made blend of thriller, horror and comedy. And the comedy was unexpected for me, because judging by the trailers, I expected much darker story, but looking back the levity was needed because *it is* very dark, but sometimes the man who likes to mutilate children is also a complete idiot.

I don't want to say anything more, it's really difficult to write a review on something where everything works. There is no psychotic editing, we've seen in dramas lately, the script is very good, costumes are wonderful, the acting is amazing - Li Xian and Li Yitong are fantastic and Liu Guanlin, who plays Chengming's sidekick, I have to give massive applause because with a role that seemed unimportant, he managed to make third main character, that's how good he was. The score is wonderful, both opening credits songs are fire, it's hard to decide which one is better, I fell in love with both. (Btw, I've seen people saying that the credits are AI, that is possible but unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt.)

While the ending left opening for season 2, I'm not sure if it's necessary but I'd happily take it. If it's gonna happen is a bigger question. Not taking the MDL rating seriously, but the numbers weren't amazing, they weren't bad, but not great.

I 100% recommend this drama if you want something slightly spooky for the autumn, you care about the plot and characters journey and simply want something different than is the current standard idol drama. If you don't, that's okay, but please be a grown up and don't give it 1* because there are no kissy kisses. Thank you :)

The con artist worth watching

I’m on episode 19 now and it’s so good so far. The story is very interesting and keeps me exciting to watch. Each scheme was set with cleverness. The story step by step unfolded in each episode that’s how I enjoyed it. It doesn’t matter lead or supporting characters, they all have interesting stories to tell so you don’t want to miss. And surely their acts are just amazing. Overall it lives up to my expectation and I’d love to watch it again.

Very intriguing drama!!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A Prophet had me hooked right from the start to the end.
It is fast paced with interlaced twists and turns that definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.
The story proceeds in a way , which we can never anticipate and definitely leaves us surprised with each episode.
Li Xian as Wang Jiaxian/Shangguan Chengming was peefect for this role. From a commoner to a strategist behind the annihilation of Tianxiang sect, his growth was awesome and Li Xian has been excellent in portraying various emotions.
Li Yitong really surprised me with her acting. She was absolutely splendid and outstanding in her performance as Jiang Feiyan, a character with mutiple shades.
Liu Guanlin and the actors were excellent in their roles.
The visual effects and the costumes were good too.
Loved the subtle romantic track between the leads.
A WORTH WATCHING suspense drama💯
Exceeded my expectations
Definitely , on my rewatch list!!

Amazing

This drama series is absolutely brilliant. It features a novel theme and a gripping, unpredictable plot. Coupled with stellar performances by the cast, it’s also incredibly humorous。

There are also many moments in the drama that pay tribute to classic movies, such as The Trueman Show. Very brilliant!

When Human Weakness Becomes the Biggest Con

I just finished this drama, and honestly, I wouldn't say this is a must-watch or a drama that everyone needs to try. For me, it was more of an “it was okay” drama. If you have some free time and enjoy mystery, suspense, revenge stories and con artists, I think it is worth giving a try. Personally, the revenge plot didn't interest me as much as the con-artist missions. I was much more engaged by watching how they manipulated people, created elaborate schemes, exploited human weaknesses and turned one deception into another.

The most interesting part of the drama for me was actually the idea behind the fortune-telling and scams. Instead of treating fortune tellers as people with supernatural abilities, the drama shows how much of it can be based on observation, psychology and manipulation. People reveal their own weaknesses through their fears, desires and beliefs, and someone who understands those weaknesses can easily turn them into a source of profit. Fear, greed, vanity, insecurity and the desire for certainty all become tools. In that sense, the real subject of the drama isn't fortune-telling itself, but human nature and vulnerability.

I also liked how the story gradually revealed its secrets. Almost everyone has something hidden, and people are constantly pretending to be someone they are not. This creates a world where it is difficult to know who is actually controlling the situation. The “con within a con” structure was one of the things that kept me interested, especially in the earlier and middle parts. The drama was at its best when the schemes had clear logic and were based on understanding people's psychology.

Shangguan Chengming is also an interesting protagonist because his revenge forces him to learn and use the same methods that destroyed his family. He isn't a completely straightforward hero. He lies, manipulates and uses people's weaknesses, but usually for a purpose that is different from the people he is fighting. I liked this moral ambiguity because it makes his character more complicated than a simple revenge-driven protagonist.

The relationship between Shangguan Chengming and Jiang Feiyan also worked surprisingly well for me. This is definitely not a romance-focused drama, so anyone coming here mainly for romance will probably be disappointed. There isn't much conventional romantic development, but the chemistry between Li Xian and Li Yitong is really good. Their chemistry comes more from secrets, tension, mutual understanding and their complicated history than from constant romantic scenes, and I actually preferred that.

The acting was one of the strongest parts of the drama. Li Xian handled Shangguan Chengming's different sides very well, while Li Yitong gave Jiang Feiyan the right combination of beauty, intelligence and mystery. The veteran cast also added a lot of weight to the story. Even when the plot became exaggerated, the performances usually kept me interested.

However, the drama definitely has many flaws. The later episodes became increasingly complicated and, for me, increasingly unrealistic and illogical. The constant layers of hidden plans, identities, betrayals and counter-plans eventually became exhausting. What was exciting at first started to feel excessive later. At some point, instead of wondering how clever the next scheme would be, I was wondering how everyone could possibly have predicted so many things in advance. 😂 The drama sometimes relies too heavily on its characters being able to anticipate almost everything.

I also felt that the protagonist gradually became too capable, which reduced some of the tension. When someone can always come up with another plan at exactly the right moment, the danger naturally becomes less convincing. This was one of the reasons my interest dropped toward the later part.

I'm personally not someone who is especially interested in Republican-era dramas, but surprisingly, this one still managed to keep me watching for quite a while because of its mystery and con-artist elements. The atmosphere, historical setting and theatrical quality also gave it a distinctive identity.

What I appreciate most is that the drama doesn't simply say that people who believe in fortune-telling are foolish. Instead, it shows why people become vulnerable to these kinds of scams. People want answers, hope, wealth, power, love, security or a way out of their problems. When someone understands those desires, manipulating them becomes much easier. There is also a deeper message here about shortcuts. People often want something without wanting to accept the effort, uncertainty or consequences required to achieve it, and that makes them easy targets.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this drama. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, and I definitely wouldn't tell everyone that they must watch it. It has strong acting, an interesting concept, good mystery elements and some genuinely clever con-artist storytelling, but the later writing becomes too convoluted, unrealistic and illogical for me.

Still, it wasn't boring, which is already something considering how much I usually struggle with Republican-era dramas. 😂 The con artists were definitely the highlight for me, much more than the revenge plot. If you enjoy psychological manipulation, mystery, complicated schemes and characters who are constantly hiding their true identities, this could be worth trying.
