Worth watching amidst all the accusations
When the news was first released, I was really concerned. It seemed like Hou Minghao (HMH) was blindsided when AiMi was announced as the female lead a few months after he had already signed his contract. My worry for him grew even more when people started throwing wild accusations at him just because he didn't decline the role, when in reality he didn't have the power to just back out like that. While I completely understand people who preferred to skip the show altogether, I don't understand those who went out of their way to give it bad ratings instead of just ignoring it.Despite all the noise, I am so glad I gave it a shot and watched it anyway.
Acting
Hou Minghao: He is a superb actor. The way he controls his facial expressions and eyes to communicate extreme emotions in a subtle, non-verbal way is incredible.
AiMi: You can tell she is still relatively new to acting, but her youth actually matched Jaiyu's character perfectly. It made me realize why the casting team chose her in the first place.
Story & Pacing
The story was solid, and they stuck to the core script. There are a few minor loopholes, mostly because the editing felt a bit rushed, likely due to squeezing everything into just 28 episodes. However, I loved how well the characters were fleshed out despite the shorter length. Everyone had their own struggles and backstory, which made me genuinely adore each character as they appeared.
Music (OST)
The soundtrack was spot on. Every single track fit the story wonderfully and elevated the emotional scenes right when it mattered most.
Final Verdict
I am so glad I gave this drama a chance. It had a very strong opening, kept me engaged, and delivered a incredibly satisfying ending
I only rated 9.5 as I deducted .5 due to the make up. Lol. Sometimes it looks cakey. Hehe.

Stop casting 17-year-olds and 18-year-olds in romance dramas.
✅The Casting Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About.For some reason, CDrama writers or whoever is in charge of casting keep getting it wrong. Not everyone is going to enjoy a romance between an 18-year-old and a 29-year-old. It's very weird, and honestly, that is the biggest turn-off for many people.
At the time of filming, the female lead (Ai Mi) was only 17 years old . I assumed it was shot last year. Yes, the age of consent in China is 14, but that doesn't make it any less uncomfortable to watch. The industry needs to do better. If they're going to cast 17 or 18-year-olds Female Leads in romantic leads, they should also cast 19 to 20-year-old male leads. That way, the dynamic feels much more appropriate and less jarring.
The 11-year age gap isn't just a number it shows on screen. She looks like a little girl next to him, and the chemistry simply doesn't land because of it . This is Ai Mi's first leading role, and while she shows promise, pairing her with someone over a decade older in a romance drama is a disservice to both actors.
✅Entanglements That Exhaust Rather Than Intrigue
Secondly, the drama is weighed down by far too many entanglements. Apparently, before the female lead, the male lead already had two wives and a kid. I'm sure the whole backstory will be explained later, but it's exhausting sitting through it. Instead of building tension and investment, it just feels like unnecessary baggage piled onto an already problematic setup.

There are elements here that could work, The political scheme, The contract marriage trope, the warlord setting but the casting choice overshadows everything. Until the industry stops pairing barely-legal teenagers with nearly-30-year-old men in romantic leads, dramas like this will continue to cause controversy.

Great, engaging story with such a talented cast
The story of this drama was engaging, kept its fast pace throughout the whole series, and had my heart pounding and me sitting on the edge of my seat a lot. Some of the plot twists were really mind-blowing and quite unpredictable (they fooled me more than once... and big time!), and the romance of the main couple was beautiful, sincere, and warm. The greatest joy for me was that for once, novel-readers couldn't accidentally spoil the plot for me, because, well — it's an original!For everyone who worries about the age gap between AiMi and Hou Minghao and maybe hesitates to watch this for that particular reason, I can tell you — the romance doesn't include kisses. It's mostly platonic, with some embraces, hand-holding, and warm gazes at each other.
As for the characters, Xiao WuYi was easily my favourite one. Not only because he was played by one of my favourite actors, but also because his growth was the most visible. He started off quite calculating and deceptive, with only his mission on his mind, not caring about his fearsome reputation or his own life, for that matter. Yet, gradually, through his love for Xie JiaYu, he learned to value his life and changed some of his views on other things, as well as his relationships with the people around him.
Xie JiaYu was the other character whose growth was very visible. She started off as a cheerful, carefree, and mischievous girl, sheltered by her parents and full of idealistic dreams, yet the hurdles on her path changed her beautifully into a mature, responsible young woman, while always remaining able to choose the path she preferred.
A special joy for me was having Riley Wang and Peter Ho among the cast. I had seen Peter Ho only once before in Unchained Love, but his talent really left a huge impression on me there. And with his performance here, he proved once again what a masterful actor he is! As for Riley Wang, he has stayed in my mind for his wonderful role alongside HMH in Back From the Brink.
HMH once again showed what a talent he is! Not only did his performance look as though he lived his role, but he also took part in most of the OST songs. He has such a wonderful voice, and his talent is amazing as both an actor and singer. I think this is one of the few dramas where I watched the opening credits in every single episode! That song... Well, that was a masterpiece to my ears. And something completely different from the rest of HMH's repertoire that I've heard.
As for AiMi, this was the first of her works I have seen. I think she's very talented and was able to portray quite a wide range of emotions. I expect her to have an amazing career ahead, and I will be looking forward to her other works in the future as I expect her talent will only grow. Also, her looks remind me a lot of Olivia Rodrigo, especially in her teen years.
In conclusion, I think the drama was very good, and I personally enjoyed it a lot. However, due to the controversy surrounding the age gap of the lead actors, I'll leave it up to each person to decide if watching this is right for them!

didn't disappoint
I think they forgot his hair was wavy near the end 😂 if you're looking for steamy romantic scenes (which seems to be the only reason why some badly written dramas get highly rated in here) then you won't get that. but if you're looking for something that shows loyalty and emotional bonds beyond physical attraction, then you'll like this. the FML age limits what physical intimacy can be done but it doesn't take away from the bond that is built between the ML and FML. the war story in this is way better than more complete feeling than pursuit of jade where that military story fell off the plot. The songs and story was well done. acting was cute and humorous and serious and sad when it needed to be, very well rounded without one genre taking over the other. My favorite character of Neo will always be Ji Bozai though 😂😂 his attitude as that character being ruthless was all in his expressions. all in all this didn't disappointWas this review helpful to you?
brillant establishing moment for Ai mi
a few episodes away from the finale, i can say this show is a very classic story, in what is expected from a historical drama, with the cliché tropes... But they did get a LOT of things right and well done.I got a déja vu when yaoyao turns around to save xiao on the boat, like the moment chang yu in pursuit of jade turns around to save ML from the snow. it's a decisive moment that shows both characters courage and being perfect match for each other. it's always nice to see.
My favourite thing about key to the pheonix heart is Ai mi's character developpement. i follow Ai mi since her appearance in the double and she is truly so talented. I know the show could have had some scenes directed differently had she not been this young and it's very respectable at least.
my second favourite thing was aimi's character relation with her mom. her mom was one of the very interesting supporting characters. i wish she had more scenes as she really fuelled a lot of the mystery and intrigue and poise.
What made their relationship so special is how it evolved from being complete opposites.
With only 28 episodes, the show often seems rushed in the plot.
Main leads mostly carried this show, i found the opening and first episode too exaggerated but they did show the almost lunatic/insanity and dedication of the ML. He also evolves a lot, but we don't see enough of it.
the story has enough intrigue, character depth for a longer dive than 28 episodes, where we don't just see the decisive end-actions but the journey and day in/out of their adventures. they definitely did not use the main characters talents enough.
Themes of freedom, power and use of technology for justice vs power come up nicely too.
if you like historical drama its a nice one, but having watched so many already, the plot feels scripted and fluffy enough you never get lost in it.
will be tuning for the last episodes!

Something Good!
I was craving a good combination of script/acting/direction, and this is such a relief! Great story, many beliavable twists and subplots, super performances, and never a dull ten minutes anywhere.If you like political intrigue, risk, character development, and friendships in historical drama, mixed with action and heroic problem-solving, you will like this alot. It doesn't have the intellectual density of some famous recommendations, but the story is really well-done, with no major deus ex machina unreasonably added just to keep the story going! Because the story stands well without resorting to saves. It moves. It's well shot. The people are believable.
As far as the noise about a 17yr old actress working with a 28yo actor, all I can say is: These are seasoned professionals.
Given that the female lead character is SUPPOSED to be young, we are lucky to have Ai Mi in the role. I've seen her in about 10 series. Her skill is the reason she has been signed up with so many GREAT shows! In Phoenix Heart, her acting is on par with the rest of the cast. She is equal to the job, and she's no dummy.
Overall, the acting, chemistry, and tone, writing, character portrayals, and shoot angles are completely outstanding and appropriate. The whole cast is awesome. This is a breath of fresh air.

BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN DRAMA (Best of 2026 line up)
This drama captured my attention from the very first opening scene and with each scene afterwards, it left me wanting more. The way this drama dealt with everything was so amazing! Each character was written to be so complex, raw and morally grey. Not one of these characters were perfect each one had flaws and struggles and that's what makes good characters. So often, writers make their characters not go through such deep growth and struggles because they are afraid to make characters have flaws and struggles, but they didn't have this problem in this drama.I loved everything about this drama! The music, the acting, the storyline, the fight scenes, the characters, the sets and costumes. Just everything!
The plot twists were so good, I genuinely didn't see them coming and each fight scene was so good! I love a drama that can make good fight scenes! And don't get me started on the angst, because it was so good! It had me bawling so much.
I loved the main couple, they were so cute and soft! I loved the gradual build to their romantic relationship because it felt so real and authentic. They built a connection and a solid foundation and they just added to that, and I love that so much in romance dramas. I see in so many dramas, that they rush through the romantic relationship without ever building onto it for a real connection and they didn't have that problem in here.
I would rewatch right now. A 10/10 watch! I would recommend this to everyone!

Just amazing
Firstly congratulations Ai mi for your 1st drama as a main lead with our gorgeous hero Neo, our stunt king.... Really I love this drama so much.... I don't see any age gap between them.... I just enjoying this show..... I want to see more drama of Neo and Aimi as a couple.... They have a spark..... And also I love Li Mao's character.... Really he deserves the role of Emperor...... Best Chinese Drama
No doubt the best Chinese drama for the last 5 months. Once you start watching, you will not want to stop.The two main leads acting are impressive. Bet these two will have many good dramas in the near future.
Typically Chinese drama always has many characters and sometimes very difficult to follow but this drama is easy to follow and understand (not confusing with so many characters). And also, this drama has no silly jokes or annoying scene like a character trying to be funny but not funny at all and also a character that's loves sucking up others. You won't find that in this drama. And no on off relationship between ML and FL. They had a contract marriage that make them grew close together.
I am always surprised by Chinese drama, they always seem to find the right person for each character.

Two burning hearts with passion for people and love, so when I say that this drama is everything I expected from it, I mean it.💖💖First of all, Hou Minghao is one of my favourite actors since LITC and this drama has been feeding me more since I started watching it. 💗💗 I absolutely love his acting in this drama. The ML was a perfect fit for him and matched his acting skills perfectly. The small, tiny sparks between the ML and the FL were everything I needed to start blushing like crazy. Every little interaction gave me butterflies and the chemistry was speaking for itself. 💞💞💞💯
Next off, the plot; genuinely so smooth. The story is a mix of betrayal, parting, passion, pain, and a deep desire to rinse the dirty court of Southern Ye. The writing is impeccable, easy to follow but full of surprises. The start was a really good drive to the whole plot and romance. I don't want to spoil alot so I'll stop there.
If I had to talk about anything negative at all, I would say that the drama should have at least had epsiodes until 29 or 30. This would have made the ending a bit more reassuring or realistic in a way. If another episode was added, it would've been cherry on top. 🍒
The OST was great, loved all fighting scenes (especially ML with bloodshot eyes AND in armor) 🤩🤩
A small little spoiler: No kisses involved and I like a good kiss but this drama was soo good to the actual point it didn't need one.
Genuinely one of the best dramas that I've waited so long for and turned out to be THIS good. Totally reccomended. ❤️❤️

It's been a while since I was this invested in a drama
Loved this so much.You'll find that this drama is a bit fast-paced than most dramas, but that doesn't make it any less engaging. In fact, I think its fast pace is one of the reasons it's so captivating. This is one of those rare dramas that keeps you hooked every second, and if you skip even a few minutes, you might miss something important. Because it's fast-paced, it doesn't waste your time, which makes it even more worth watching.
Now, I also wanted to leave a note regarding the criticism about the cast's age and the age gap. I've been a fan of both Hou Minghao and Ai Mi for a while. As for Ai Mi, I've seen her in several supporting roles and already knew she had the potential to become a great leading actress. It's true that I wasn't expecting her to star in this kind of romance drama at just 17, but as long as it doesn't include overly intimate scenes or excessive kissing, I think it's fine. They're actors, after all, they're simply doing their job. And despite all the criticism, just look at how successful this drama has become.
I also hope people will look at the positive side. At just 17 years old, Ai Mi was able to deliver such an amazing performance in her first leading role in a drama like this. She was incredibly captivating. She did an excellent job, even though, like any actor, there's always room to improve. As for Hou Minghao, he didn't disappoint, as always. His emotional performance was spot on. For me, the acting in this drama was top-notch. It was also refreshing to see an actress who is nearly the same age as her character portraying the role so naturally. I loved that energy.
The supporting cast was great as well. Everyone did an excellent job. The OST was so good too. This is one of the best dramas of 2026 for me. It takes you through laughter, sadness, joy, heartbreak, and so many other emotions. I highly recommend it. You'll definitely want to give it a try.

First of all, This might be HMH’s BEST roles! He outperformed his previous roles. I was in awe every time he was on screen. I never thought AIMI to be this good. She has a bright future ahead. 💓The storyline : The starting is GOOD, but upto ep 15 it got a bit stretchy… after ep 15 It finally started to go somewhere and yes im so glad i did not drop it halfway… the plot twists is insane! i loved and hated so many characters at certain point of time 😭. Anyways IT WAS A GOOD WATCH!!! omgg i have to rewatch it later someday.
OSTs ; this drama ATE with the ost lineup. HMH outdid here as well. The songs are on repeat in my spotify playlist. 100/10.
ps: i wish to see hmh and aimi in another historical romance drama when she’s a bit grown up😭😭😭. They had a good chemistry!
