The fake will writes of Zifu and Duan Hong’s affair, and their plan to commit murder after Consort Li discovered the truth. Liu Che questions Zifu. She proclaims her innocence, but is disappointed in Liu Che’s distrust of her. Liu Che summons Duan Hong back to Chang’an for the investigation, but Duan Hong has been knocked unconscious in the wilderness after pursuing Yuan Shu. Duan Hong’s absence further plants seed of doubt. Duan Hong is arrested and is surprised when Yuan Shu brings his former wife Liji as a witness to their affair. Duan Hong admits that he secretly loves Zifu, but maintains that she is innocent. Liu Che sentences Duan Hong to death, and locks Zifu in her palace as punishment.
