Interesting Additions to a Tried and True Formula

Summertime is elevated by the performances of Seong In Ho (Cha Do Hyun- in his debut!) and Kim Do Min (Yeo Eun Ho). While much of the plot is well-worn ground for most BL fans, it's the unique additions that elevate this beyond a typical entry.

Usually, it is the dominant personality that is the tsundere in the relationship dynamic- here, our reluctant lover (Yeo Eun Ho) is the Grumpy Grumperson. I appreciated that twist. A level of realism was brought to the story when it represented sex outside of simple (seemingly ready without preparation) penetrative sex. The skinship and the sexual exploration felt true to life and the actors really had an amazing physical chemistry.

With regards to the physicality of the relationship, I felt like the writers/directors didn't "pick a side". It seems that far too often, a series wants to either be "rose-colored romanticism" without the messy reality of desire and lust, or it wants to push the boundaries by putting the passion at the forefront. It is rare to find a series that reflects the reality that love is both warm, safe and filled with emotional, puppy dog yearning, but shifts when sex and sexual desire for your partner is present. These characters have both the romanticized and the passionate in equal measure. In other words, sometimes it's very PG and (true to life) there are times when it is decidedly NOT very PG.

What was far more subtle was their emotional intimacy, and the chemistry between the two actors was strong here as well. Do Hyun (pursuer) seemed to be a satellite orbiting around Eun Ho's emotional orbit- so finely tuned to his emotional state that Do Hyun's physicality would subtly change in response (the nearly imperceptible turn of the body, the way an assessing eye lingered to move past the superficial emotional response to the more nuanced emotions running underneath). The two really embodied an emotional connection decades in the making, where responding to each other's emotional state is muscle memory. And Eun Ho responded in kind with his own brand of emotional intelligence for Do Hyun. Eun Ho knew how to play the play fight dynamic that was the foundation of their bond without pushing too far, always having his grumpies, but never using Do Hyun as an emotional punching bag. That kind of interpersonal dynamic is difficult to fake and attests to the actors' commitment to the material, the fictional relationship, and the story being told.

Some may find that the ending leaves them confusedly cold and the last four to five minutes were... a choice, I guess? Irrespective of those last four minutes and how you read them, the journey was worth every step. And isn't that why we go on these adventures- to experience the journey?

It all began that summer of our youth…

Except for a typhoon, I do not think anything can be more intense than raging high school hormones. Summertime understood that from its very first episode. The sexual fantasies, the bathroom stall kisses, the stolen moments, the fireworks on New Year’s Eve…this is the messy, exciting age when friendship, desire, and fear all arrive at the same time. It felt like a Korean BL version of Secret Lover, with enough chemistry and sexual tension to pull me in immediately.

At its heart, this was always a childhood friends becoming lovers story. Eun Ho and Do Hyeon have known each other so long that their closeness feels like family, which makes the change between them even more complicated. The arrival of the openly gay third wheel was a good catalyst. He did not simply create a love triangle…he exposed what Do Hyeon had been trying so hard to suppress. The hot dog jokes and all the provocative NC scenes may have been visually exciting, but they worked because there was real emotional tension underneath.

Do Hyeon knew exactly what he wanted. He had the patience, the possessiveness, and apparently enough serious heat to keep Eun Ho constantly on edge. Yet beneath all that physical intensity was a boy who had spent years hiding the one thing he could not control…his heart. Eun Ho may have been the one slowly discovering his feelings, but Do Hyeon had been waiting for him all along. At times it did feel like Eun Ho was doing all the emotional running while Do Hyeon pulled him close and kept him guessing. I kept waiting for him to push back, not merely physically, but with honesty.

The finale brought us back to high school through that dream. At first I wondered what the writer was thinking…after all that separation, growth, and finally finding their way back to each other, why return to the beginning? But perhaps that was the point. The dream was not a reset. It was Eun Ho looking back at the summer when everything changed, now finally understanding what all those glances, jealousies, kisses, and fireworks really meant.

The beauty of Summertime is realizing that love had been staring at Eun Ho all this time. Their friendship did not disappear when love arrived. It simply became something neither of them could hide from anymore.

started with bad acting and ended with bad writing

1. first of the story was too fast paced, kinda rush, you get the conflict in the first episode
2. the main lead acting are terrible, the top act like a robot and walk like an alien. the bottom act so stiff, when he's angry and punch the top in the face he make straight face, that is non sense, then when the bottom wake up by shocked he makes another straight face
3. no coment about the AI intro and AI music
4. the entire story was bullshit you watch 10 episode for nothing
5. the ending was trash, too many flashback kinda confusing, and it had really bad writing
6. watch this drama will wasting your time

i watch bl since 2018 from different country like thai, korea, japan, china, taiwan, and summertime was the worst of 2026 korean bl so far especially the storyline, kinda trash.

- the dad beat him so badly he had bandages and everyone was chill about it???
- love rival
- episode 9 drama was unnecessary
- how the ended episode 10, it seems just the last scene was a dream but it was not well explained

Pls don't hate on me

I think it's just odd that they decided to make a bl this sexual about high schoolers , I know we are tired of those college bls but this one is to sexualised to be about high schoolers.yes it's good and the actors are handsome but yeah it was kinda giving me the ick. Other than that the kisses are actually really good for a kbl but again kisses should've been enough for a bl about high schoolers I know this generation isnt innocent anymore but like still , sorry if I hurt anyone by writing this review

Korean BLs are always a wild card. You never really know what you're going to get. I had to blink twice and double-check that I was actually watching a Korean series because that opening scene was totally unexpected and ridiculously sexy! It’s definitely a lot bolder than what you usually see in Korean shows.

Honestly, I thought it was just going to be another classic best-friends-to-lovers cliché, but the real magic of this show is in the details.

Eun-ho and Do-hyeon are practically joined at the hip. They grew up together, live next door, and are best friends, so their chemistry feels super natural. But that bond means something completely different to each of them. For Eun-ho, Do-hyeon is just his ride-or-die who’s always been there. For Do-hyeon, though, it’s way deeper. He’s been in love with Eun-ho for ages, but has to hide his feelings because keeping their friendship intact means everything to him.

Things get completely shaken up with the arrival of Kwon I Hyeon, which brings out a more possessive side in Do-hyeon. I Hyeon feels like a direct threat to the one thing Do-hyeon has always claimed as his: being the closest person in Eun-ho’s life.

The absolute highlight of the show is the acting by Do Min and In Ho. Their performances are so genuine, and their micro-expressions say it all. They managed to strike the exact right balance between friendship and romantic tension. On top of that, In Ho played such a compelling character that it’s impossible not to root for him. I really hope they work together again!

I love how the show uses double entendres, letting Do-hyeon drop hints about his feelings without giving himself away completely. It made me feel like Eun-ho probably knew how Do-hyeon really felt all along. He just needed a bit more time to figure out his own heart. Plus, all the cute moments between them are just adorable.

The series also plays with a fun role reversal. At first, Do-hyeon is the jealous one over Kwon I Hyeon, but once they head off to college, the tables turn and Eun-ho ends up going through that exact same jealousy.

And no, it wasn’t all just a dream. Quick tip: episode 4 is super important for understanding how it all ends. During the dream sequence in the finale, Eun-ho goes back to their school days right before Do-hyeon’s birthday, and he finally tells Do-hyeon what he always wished he’d said back then.

The whole show starts and ends with a dream. The opening dream is subconscious, driven by Do-hyeon’s deep desire to take things past the friendship line. The final dream, on the other hand, gives Eun-ho a sense of emotional closure and reassures Do-hyeon that his feelings weren’t just one-sided. It’s basically a retroactive answer to what Do-hyeon asked Eun-ho on his birthday. By giving him that peace of mind about the future, Eun-ho turns that last dream into a direct reply to the yearning we saw at the very beginning.

Beautifully done.

Amazing KBL but bad direction in the last 5 mins ruined it for everyone

I'd have rated it lower if I watched the last episode the day it was aired. Thankfully I watched it after the director clarified the ending. So I'd like to give the same clarification to all future watchers who probably won't get to see it. So the last 5 mins is basically Eun Ho remembering/dreaming abt the past where he is thinking something like "if i went back in time i wouldn't push him away and make a move". So the main story ends with the happy ending. Although the lack of separation between the ending and his dream makes it seem like the whole drama was a dream. If they probably had mentioned that scene as a easter egg or had a little blurred effect then this drama would have been amazing.

Overall loved the drama. Although Do Hyeon did kinda scare me at first but he didn't do anything bad so I'm good.

19 Years a Friend, One Summer to Fall: Summertime Review

Summertime (하절기, 2026) is a 10-episode Korean BL mini-series directed by Bae Yun-seo, written by Jo Yong, and based on the popular web novel by I Ro-mil. It stars Kim Do-min as Yeo Eun-ho and Seong In-ho as Cha Do-hyun.
Bae Yun-seo's Summertime is a compact, visually stunning youth drama rich in romantic tension. It's a great watch if you enjoy stories driven by secret crushes, subtle jealousy, and childhood friends taking their relationship to the next level.
A Nostalgic Take on Childhood Friends to Lovers: The dynamic between the leads naturally conveys nearly two decades of intimacy and shared history.
Psychological Tension and Chemistry: Bae Yun-seo’s direction shines in highlighting the contrast between Do-hyun’s calm, devoted exterior and the quiet possessiveness beneath. The romantic tension and chemistry between Kim Do-min and Seong In-ho are remarkably intense.
Clean Cinematography and Warm Atmosphere: Produced by Oak Company, the visual presentation features a warm summer color palette with beautifully composed, polished shots.

This one really got me. 🥹🤍 I loved the warm summer feeling and the way the relationship slowly developed. There was something really sweet about watching Seong In Ho and Kim Do Min together. 🌸☀️
The chemistry, the emotions and all those little moments between them completely pulled me in. 💕 It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely a series I enjoyed from beginning to end.
9/10 from me! ⭐✨

A K-BL up to its reputation.

I don't have much to say but for once it's because I find it almost perfect: Acting, dynamic, plot, tension, jealousy.
A typical cold nerd and his sunny popular boyfriend. I love their developpement. I find their character, they are heartwarming and sweet.
I love their dynamic and the plot. I wait every week for the next episode.

I hate the break-up dream?? No add the story. Why they did that?

I love Do Hyeon.

I loved this show the entire time I was watching it. The spicy scenes in this?! I've literally never seen a Korean BL so spicy in my life, and I fucking loved it. I loved Do Hyeon so much. I love how in love he was with Eun Ho; it's so cute. And I love how Eun Ho eventually realised, "wait, I love Do Hyeon too."
However, do not get me fucking started on the ending of this drama. You're telling me that literally the entire thing, the entire 10 episodes. All of the sex scenes, all of the emotional scenes, all of the cutesy scenes. You're telling me that ALL of that was a fucking dream? Nah. Cut the cameras cause this isn't funny. As soon as I found this out while watching, I'm surprised I didn't throw my whole laptop across the whole ass room. I was so in love with their love story, and all of that was just Eun Ho's dream? Fuck no. I'm cutting the last 5 mins of the drama out of my head, or else I'll go mentally insane.
Anyways, overall (excluding the last 5 mins), I loved this show. I loved their story, their connection, and the spicy scenes. And I loved the acting, the storyline (excluding the last 5 mins), and the production. This was an amazing drama and I will definitely be coming back to rewatch this drama at some point.

Effortless chemistry

This drama was so good, I really enjoyed watching it! It had a simple but good story. The cinematography and visuals were beautiful. The music was good.
It only had a crappy ending, so therefore it doesn't get a perfect score.

The mains had a amazing and effortless chemistry. Their kisses and NC scenes were also amazing.

This really is a must watch.
